Title: G.I. Joe Convention 2012
Post by: efranks on April 6, 2012, 10:05 AM
It's been rough going over at the Joe Club for the last couple of months, but they updated the Convention page (http://www.gijoecon.com) yesterday with the first teaser of this year's 3.75" set and it's going to be the October Guard!  Or, some part of the Guard, anyway.

I'm really psyched for this.  It's one of the teams I wanted to see in the modern style so I'm interested to see how the Club pulls it off.

I'm seriously thinking about ordering a set this year depending on how the figures look and what characters are included.  I'm also interested in seeing the 12" set again because that's going to be another Adventure Team release.

Gees, I don't collect Joe, but I might have to bite on this. I loved the Guard back in the day... Of course, then I'd have to get the original 9 and some Cobras to go with them.... a slippery slope this is.

I said I was going to buy the set last year and I didn't but this one is almost essential. I'll have to see more figures, of course, but Daina looks great. Much better than the ARAH comic pack version.

She has the A-Wing Pilot's skull cap.  Sweet like bearmeat.  Siberian bearmeat.

That's absolutely incredibly cool.  First I've seen them get their hands on a non-GI Joe accessory too, no?

I have a Russian tanker helmet.  That gives me giggles for some reason that she has a little tiny one, basically.

another SW accessory...  Is that common of them to do?  I'd never seen it before, but that holster is Pilot Lando's.  I think maybe the older one, not the new one.

Brekhov's a bit of a disappointment for me face-wise. Maybe I'm thinking of the 80s one and this is a newer version? He should have some gray in his hair and a haggard look to him. He just looks too manicured to be A Real Soviet Hero.
Title: Re: G.I. Joe Convention 2012
Post by: efranks on April 27, 2012, 02:33 AM
I don't think that's General Lando's holster.  His goes under the left arm with the strap and this one goes over.  It's very similar, though.

I'm looking at that and it seems like I recognize it, but I'm drawing a blank on where it came from.  I was thinking Hawk or Recondo, but a quick check of YoJoe shows it's not them.  It could be new but the site doesn't mention it.

It is a new head and hat, though.  I agree that the head sculpt isn't really the Brekhov that I remember from the old Marvel comics, but didn't he show up in the Image/DDP comics?  I forget, I haven't read that whole run yet.

I'm not sure of the new comics, but I saw images of a Brekhov that is younger and dashing... he reminds me of beefed-up Flint.

Probably should have checked out the figure that they're reusing parts from first, that shoulder holster looks to be the same one that came with the RoC Destro figure (http://www.hisstank.com/database/gi-joe-movie-cobra-figures-81/destro-sro-2226/).

The Oktober Guard is going to be facing off against the Iron Grenadiers.  Looks like they're using the IG's from the cancelled battle pack that was proposed either last year or way back in 2010.

I'm also digging the 12" Last Man Standing set.  But if I get that it's a follow-up to last year's set, which I already wanted, so I'll probably end up wanting both.  That's another $600 for those two sets....

Crap.

Maybe I should set my goals lower; anyone here going to the Con, that isn't a 12" collector, that would pick up the 12" exclusive for me?  Then I can just hope the 2 boxed sets stick around until after SW Celebration so I can pick them up.

It'd be great if Darklon and Voltar are part of this set, and not con attendee exclusives like I'm thinking. The Club did mention that Destro won't be in this set, but with six Grenadiers and the Oktober Guard, I'm not thinking the guys I mentioned will make the cut.
Title: Re: G.I. Joe Convention 2012
Post by: efranks on May 11, 2012, 12:58 AM
I'm happy it won't be Destro.  Apparently the latest rumor is General Mayhem because he's Russian and the Oktober Guard have a history with him. He was already in a Con set, back in 2005, but the club has already shown their willingness to update o-ring figures to the modern sculpt.  We'll see, I guess.

I'm wondering with the show figures will be also and if I'll feel the need to try and track them down too.  I'm already a little nervous on the 12" set and this is the first time I've been this interested in both scales in the same year.

$345-*******-dollars for the Oktober Guard set?!  Holy ****.  Another $210 for the loose set.  That's a $40 bump on last year's set (and $25 on the bagged set).

Don't get me wrong, the Club is doing two really nice sets this year, but if you aren't going to the convention, the price is getting a little too much.  Since you miss out on so many benefits by not going, at these prices, buying the non-attendee package really isn't affordable any more.

I'm also not sure about the OG now.  The final two members are Horror Show and a new member, General Iron Bear.  That means we're not even getting the classic 6 members which we could infer as meaning that Dragonsky will probably be a show exclusive.  Crap.  Now I'm almost more interested in buying last year's 12" set and then this year's.  Argh.  If the OG wasn't really the only special team from the vintage era that I wanted in the updated format I'd just be done with it.

Kinda let down by Voltar. At $350, this is a pass. Maybe I'll splurge on the FSS instead.

Yeah, since it's a set with Iron Grenadiers, it's a pass for me, too.

Looks like all of the reveals are done for the OG set.  Horror Show went up last night and looks pretty good.  I'm not a 100% sold on the legs they chose, they look wonky in the photo but I'm hoping they look a little better in the final product.

The thing I'm a little worried about now is that they're only going to allow attendees to register for the first couple of weeks days per an email that went out last night.  I'm afraid of the set selling through, or the bagged set going fast.  Either would kind of screw up my plans for ordering.  I understand why they're doing it, but on top of all the other problems they've had this year, this is another unexptected one.

   E...

Edit- Looks like I read that wrong, it's the first couple of days, not weeks.  Still, it could really throw a wrench into my plans.

I would buy all of these if they were released in a more general, affordable release.  too bad.

Non-attending pre-orders went up today about 7:30 and sold out in less than 3 hours according to the Club's email.  They set aside some boxed and bagged sets for non-attending and they apparently have a few left for attendees but they're not allowing people to double-up on orders this year.

I got my order in for a boxed and bagged set but I'm not going to count it until I get confirmation that my order went through.  I jumped in about 10 minutes after the email hit so I'm hoping all is good.

It's not cheap, though.  The prices on both the boxed and bagged sets are up, no free shipping this year and they're charging a $6 processing fee which I don't recall from previous years.

I'm weak.  Last minute tonight I jumped on the Con site again and ordered the 12" set.  I didn't buy last year's but it was on my short list and if their store hadn't gone down due to the CC fraud, probably would have picked it up before now.  Now I'm hoping a few make it until after the Con so I can pick one up later this year...maybe after CVI.

But, if it doesn't hang around, one thing in my favor is that I have the original Hasbro release of the sandrail so the accessories should fit on that if I miss the yellow AT version.

Info is out about the 3.75" show souvenirs from this year's con:

Attendee Exclusive: October Guard motorcyle (Snarler Repaint)

Annihilator 3-pack ES 650: $85
IG Ground Assault 2-pack (Darklon & Sgt. Major) ES 1,000: $75
October Guard Attack Helicopter ES 600: $70
Cobra Stealth Paratrooper ES 500
Soviet Convoy Truck w/ 3 tops (OG, Cobra, IG) ES 500: $99

No photos of anything yet except the OG Cycle.  I also haven't seen any reports of a 12" show exclusive yet.  But according to GeneralsJoes.com and a couple other sites, looks like Darklon will be available somewhere.

They also have 500 pieces of the Footloose figure, carded. More will be available after the show in the Club store as it's a Club exclusive and now a show exclusive.

   E...

Edit to add some info and pricing to the souvenirs.  And, I have to say, the IG 2-pack with Darklon & Sgt. Major for $75 is ripoff.  It's limited to 2 per person while everything else is 1 per.  The Truck, based on the Indy vehicle, is awesome. Probably my favorite of the souvenirs but the 2-pack is really cool also (Darklon!!!), but not at that price.  And, apparently there aren't any 12" souvenirs this year, I've seen no posts anywhere for one so...

Gads. So glad I don't collect Modern GI JOE.

Freaking Raiders truck that was on clearance (i got the cloth top version!) is now recolored and $99? Ha!

I picked up the RoC version of that Copter at a yard sale....and it's mostly junk.

A few of the Oktober Guard figures look good, but the rest of this year's stuff is awful and insanely priced...moreso than usual.

Title: Re: G.I. Joe Convention 2012
Post by: efranks on June 28, 2012, 09:16 PM
Yeah, I wasn't a fan of that helicopter and never bought the RoC version.  The truck, while expensive, does look really cool with the different tops.  Cost aside, that's an excellent piece IMO.

Found out that there is no 12" souvenir but they are selling sets of three of the AT crates for $21 which isn't a terrible deal.  The 12" freebie was an extra mummy suit.

But, the huge prices weren't limited to the 3.75" stuff, according to reports the Man of Evil accessory set for this year's subscription figure is $45!  That's $25 more than last year's weather spotter outfit, $13 more than the 2010 Urban Uniform and $12 more than the 2009 Talking Commaner set and that had a repro box in it!

What gets me about the Darklon 2-pack is that at 1,000 pieces it's the highest edition on a souvenir figure since the 2008 Roddy Piper figure and it's still $75.  That's $30 more than last year's set, Telampago/Gatilho, which had an ES of 650 and the Manleh/Starduster set from 2009.  The 2010 set was O-Ring, Dolphin & Poole, which came with 2 kyaks, ES 650 and also only cost $45.

Makes you wonder, did manufacturing costs really jump that much in one year or are they padding the bottom line to offset all the money they lost during the credit card fiasco?  Anyone in the TF Club track pricing and can give a comparison of this year's Con sets & souvenirs vs previous years?

So, apparently Hasbro has a huge display of proposed but never released (cancelled) figures and vehicles on display at Joe Con and pretty much everything that was on my short list that I wanted is in that case, all done in 30th/PoC style: Lady Jaye, Flint, Kwinn, Tele-Viper, Eels...

There's also an armored assault carrier called a "Steel Wolf" which is pretty much straight out of my dreams for what I'd like to see in a new vehicle.  Think Aliens PC...what a shame.

The thing that pisses me off maybe the most is Kwinn.  As late as NYCC Hasbro was still planning on him and now?  Probably never.

Unless they show something tomorrow during their panel, it's not looking like they have anything scheduled at retial until February 2013...so after the current stock of Retaliation is gone, nothing?  Guess we'll hear tomorrow.

My only hope for Retaliation at this point is that Hasbro doesn't manufacture/release any more wave 1 cases and skip right into 2, 3 and 4 for the movie launch.  Because, if they re-release W1, we'll never see that stuff either.

They're making all that, it's just going to cost you $50 per figure, and they're going to have $200/mo. payments on any vehicle...  it's only a 7% apr on the final price, and it's a generous 72 month plan.

Title: Re: G.I. Joe Convention 2012
Post by: Scockery on June 30, 2012, 08:28 PM
I find it hard to believe they'd go all zombie with a classic brand...even just for a wave or a boxed set. It's like the designers came up with stuff they knew corporate/major retailers would balk at.

Steel Wolf good outer design, but why waste the interiour on a motorcycle slot?

The Renegades stuff...interesting, but no Baroness or Roadblock or Mindbender or Flint or Lady Jaye?

Kwinn thing is infuriating. I don't even collecting current stuff, but this in demand version of the character has been wanted for decades now. They couldn't kick some lame figure from a 7 pack and slide him in? Stick him on a Retaliation card? WOULD STORES (read: Wal-Mart, the enemy of collectors) CANCEL THEIR ORDERS? Is that how much power buyers have?

I recall hearing that Paramount wanted no Joes on shelves for six months prior to the film's release. If there's a 3rd movie, time to switch studios, Hasbro. They cost you a lot of money.

Micro Figures...is there enough of a fanbase for these? Probably not. A useless attempt to get kids into a property that has no regular media support. Flopperiffic idea. Should've saved the tooling costs for new 4" head sculpts.

My wallet is glad that the line got pushed back.  there are some great figures in there.  The ones I am eye balling are the Night Viper (who isn't), Crimson Guard (again who isn't), Cobra Eel Landing Raft Set :D, that Firefly from the 3 pack ( I think is better than the Ultimate version).

That 30th Concept thing, are those possible figures in the future ?
Title: Re: G.I. Joe Convention 2012
Post by: efranks on July 1, 2012, 01:30 AM
I don't know if all the zombie figures were really on the table but the Renegades stuff and the 30th figs like Flint, Jaye, Kwinn, Eels, Tele-Viper...those were all legit options that didn't get done for one reason or another.

The Coyote vehilce from the Renegades cartoon is really excellent, as is the Steel Wolf.  There's a big list of missed opportunities in there.  I have no idea how far some of them got into production, I think Kwinn is done because some samples have turned up and the Club Footloose uses his arms, but the rest make use of enough existing parts that it shouldn't take much to get them into production.

I guess if the movie really works next March and they're looking at a 3rd film, we'll probably see Retaliation likenesses going forward and some of these will probably never get made.  But if it falls off like RoC?  Maybe Hasbro will abandon the movie heads and we'll get some of these.  Who knows.  I'm not holding my breath on any of them.

I think going forward we will see some of the classic-looking 30th-syle figures added to the Retaliation line. We are already seeing it a little bit with the upcoming Crimson Guard, Night Viper, SE w/ Timber, 3-pack Firefly, and the Eel from the raft set which more or less looks like the diver prototype. Some figures like Flint, Cobra Officer, and Lady Jaye would probably fit right into the line with a "classic" added in front of their names.

Looking at most of the convention pictures, it looks like the imagination well ran pretty dry...everything is ninja, zombie, or zombie ninja.  The updated classic characters are the only things I'd have been interested in, and they'll probably never see the light of day.  The fact that Kwinn got as far as he did and is unlikely to see a release is depressing.

GI JOE has been running on nostagia's fumes since RISE OF COBRA's line tanked and Hasbro decided to drop movie likenesses in Pursuit of Cobra. They wouldn't commit to a real RENEGADES line (probably with good reason, as the show aired on a channel that's not even part of basic cable packages).

No, but at this point I think that Hasbro has to try anything they can to get people, especiaklly kids, outside the collector community involed in the brand.  If their version of Squinkies is the way to do it, good for them.

I'd like to know if Hasbro mentioned anything about the 12" line coming back?  The $20 line seemed to sell really well here and I'd love to know if Hasbro considered it a good enough of a seller that they'll see about bringing it back inbetween movies (if there's a 3rd).  They don't have to have movie liknesses to do the firefighter and cop type figures.  And, of course, I'd love to see some smallish AT themed sets.

I've been looking at some of the pics from the convention, and there is some pretty neat stuff there.  I wasn't entirely clear, but is there basically nothing new coming out from now until next March(ish)?  Unless this delay really ends up making this movie awesome, and the toy line benefits, I'm curious what the future for Joes holds at this point.  I guess we can (and do) say this about almost any action figure line lately, but I don't know how much kids care about Joes really these days and if they aren't going to release "classic" characters and stick to zombie/movie/etc. stuff, collectors/adults may lose interest too.  Too early to say of course, but this whole movie delay really gums up the works for this line.
