Watto's Junk Yard / Whatever Happened to...
« on: May 5, 2003, 04:17 PM »
This thread is dedicated to: Mike and Wayne Johnson, Chris and Nick Frank, Dana and Eric Larson etc etc

Ever wonder what happened to your Star Wars buddies from childhood.  The above guys were guys I either collected with or role played with.

I wonder if they are still into as much as I am?
Would they think it was cool if they saw my collection now?
What made them stop collecting?
I wonder if they have bought any of the modern stuff?

The SW craze during the early 80's was huge and we represent a small fraction of those that have survived, how many sleeping giants are still out there unaware that this world even exists?

Watto's Junk Yard / What did you want to be growing up?
« on: April 25, 2003, 11:21 AM »
I went through about three or four dream jobs before I settled down in high school of what I wanted to be and do....

#1 Paleontologist

I was a dinosaur junky when I was a kid, I loved the big lizards more than anything for a while.  My parents bought me a set of the World Books (put out by some encylcopedia company) and I would read the Dinosaur one endlessly.  I still remember when the dude who sold us the books came and showed me that volume, I never knew these things ever even existed.  Oh to be four again!  The Dinosaur fettish changed into...

#2 Astronaut/Astronomer

Porbably a product of the Space Shuttle program but what kid I guess didn't want to be an astronaut I guess.  There is a local Omni-Theater here (kind of like IMAX only round) and they would show space movies a lot of the time.  I was enthralled by the notion of going to space.  I still am actually but realize it probably won't happen for a long time.  I don't think most kids though wanted to be astronomers.  Just shows what kind of geek I was I guess :)  Again, I would read endless books and trivia on the planets and stars for days on end, I joined a local star watching group and would go out in fields and watch meteor showers and look through telescopes with them (I think I was around 10)  The joy of space never has really left me and is a large part of why I enjoyed Star Wars I guess.  That is still there inside me and why I still do like Star Wars!

#3 Archeologist

This one may have something to do with Indiana Jones but not likely because I don't think I ever saw the movies until Temple of Doom and that was after the obsession.  Again, the local science museum had a mummy/Egyptian exhibit and that quickly became my favorite place to go even before the dinosaur bones.

#4 Chemist

Notice a trend here :)  Somewhere in 8th or 9th grade I decided I really loved Chemistry, the reactions, the mixing of acids and bases, the cool little Junior High experiments caught the geek in me and never let go.  Somewhere in High School I realized I could make 2 times as much money by being a Chemical Engineer and that is the way I went and have never really looked back

One common theme in everything here though is my love of all things science, core raw science.  It is a still one of my true passions, I love reading about astronmy and physics, the works of Carl Sagan and theoretical universe type stuff.  I still love looking at dinosaurs and watching FOX's mummy shows.  I hope my son is into this stuff too because I can't wait to share in some of those eureka moments

Other Toy Lines / Muppets
« on: April 21, 2003, 02:56 PM »
Man oh man I saw the Swedish Chef/Kitchen set this morning at Suncoast and I can't tell you how tempted i was to buy it.  Being almost 1/2 Swedish the guy is sort of an icon to me.  Unfortunately I don't really have room to display it (it is freaking huge) nor do I have the willpower to collect another toy line and my wife would have blown a gasket I think.

Still, this has to be one of the nicest toys ever.  There are 42 accesories and it retails for $35.  It is one of the coolest things I have ever seen but had to pass on.

I know BDW collects these, anyone else?

Watto's Junk Yard / Road Trips
« on: April 17, 2003, 04:03 PM »
Ever gone Road Tripping?

I've been on three major ones...

#1 Spring Break in high school, me and three buddies piled into a 85 Mustang and drove from Minnesota to Oregon and California and then back in 10 days!  It was one of those coming of age times of my life.

Disasters

I'm 6'4", sadly I was not the tallest guy on the trip so I had to cram into the back seat, the whole friggin time.

We piled all of our gear in motorcycle trailer, the tire blew up in the middle of North Dakota.  We then spent almost a full day trying to find a spare.  We found the exact tire on a toy tractor at a John Deere dealership, the dude wouldn't sell it to us, so we rigged something up with a wheel barrow tire.  That got us to the middle of Montana where

The whole axle disintigrated on the trailer.  Being dumb high school kids we didn't think about one tire being smaller than the other so we had to abandon the trailer on the side of the interstate and go back into Glendive, MT and buy a whole new trailer.  We tied the old one on top of the new one.

While we were in Glendive we gassed up and headed out, forgetting to pay for the gas and proceeded to get pulled over.  The cop was pretty understanding and made us go back and pay, it was an honest mistake

In Oregon we wanted to go see Crater Lake, heard it was gorgeous yadda yadda so we took the highway from the Interstate to the Park.  Turns out a logging truck tipped over and the whole highway was blocked, so we decided to go off on a logging trail and camp.  Well, being in Oregon in the spring means that it usually is pretty wet, yep it started pouring in the middle of the night so we packed up and drove into the next town past the logging road exit and slept in the car overnight

Well, we made it up to Crater Lake that morning and come to find out that they get ungodly amounts of snow (like 100 feet plus) and the snow banks were well above 12' still.  All access to the park was pretty much closed so we couldn't go even see the lake.

So, we decided we wanted to see Redwoods.  And for some still unknown reason we didn't want to go to the Redwood National Park instead we headed toward Eureka, CA from the main interstate.  I am not sure what highway this is but it is listed as National Scenic Highway cutting through some pretty cool mountains on the way to HWY 1 on the coast.  It took us a good 12 hours to wind our way within an hour of Eureka when we get to a point where a huge sign says, road closed due to landslide.  It was like 9PM and the people said that during the course of the day the landslide happened, you could go back to the interstate (12 hours) or try one of the side roads.  It was dark, we were from flatland, tired and wanted to get to Eureka, so we elected to go for the side road.  This was one of the scariest trips of my life as it hugged mountain sides with what looked like frequent landslides with no real guardrails on almost sheer cliffs.  We did make it into Eureka, at like 6 AM the next day.  It was a bad couple of days.

So we got to the ocean and Eureka (never really saw the Redwoods?) and screwed around there and realized we had to get home in like 3 days for school.  So that afternoon we took the Mustang out on the beach and proceeded to we believe blow out one of the cylinders on the car.

That pretty much limited us to driving no more than 60 MPH the whole way home...and we drove almost straight through because it is a long ass way from California to Minnesota.  The whole cylinder thing sucked ass because If I remember it took us almost 24 hours to cross South Dakota and back home which is usually a 10 hour trip.

It was a ton of fun and like I said something I'll never ever forget.  We met up with some of our girl friends from High School in Portland (they went to Seattle) and hung out with them.  They gave us three tapes (we only brought 3 and all were Guns N' Roses :)) some unknown band called Pearl Jam.  They also gave us a Nirvana tape who I was pretty familiar with having hung out with the Stoners in the back of the gorcery store we all worked at.  The first time I really got drunk, the first time I was away from home on my own, the first time seeing the Pacific Ocean...it will always be one of the best times of my life and I won't ever forget what I saw, who I was with and what I did.  It was great.

More later :-*

Watto's Junk Yard / Your Favorite Band?
« on: April 17, 2003, 12:03 PM »
I know some people's favorites, not everyones though.  I'll start out

First and above all others are my boys:

Pearl Jam

I've been to two of their shows and am lucky enough to go three more times this summer.  All of the crap they go the extra mile for with us the fans is amazing.  Full concert bootlegs a week after the show for $15 a piece.  Charging standard price for floor seats in the front few rows.  Christmas Records every year.  $13 for T-Shirts at the show and I could go on and on.

Beyond them I really enjoy Grunge

Soundgarden
Nirvana
Alice in Chains
Stone Temple Pilots

And then these bands or solo acts also tickle my fancy

The Beatles
Led Zeppelin
Guns n' f'n Roses
Smashing Pumpkins (and Zwan)
Dave Matthews Band
Ben Harper
Natalie Merchant
The Who
Neil Young
The Black Crowes
Radiohead
U2
Nat King Cole
Bing Crosby
Blind Melon (highly under rated)

And then let's not forget Jazz

Miles
Coltrane
Monk
Getz
Mingus
Brubeck
Guilardi

We can do bands you hate later on :P

Saga '02-'04 / Cantina Wave 2 Sets a No Go (For now)
« on: April 11, 2003, 11:15 AM »

This really ticks me off.  Hasbro really screwed the pooch by releasing retail death in Greedo, Hammerhead and Walrusman in the first wave.  Wave 2 minus Wuher is where these sets would have started to shine.  There are a couple of e-tailers, Brians Toys being one of them where you can order them still.  Expect to pay a hefty price for them though.  This is a line which makes perfect sense for the fan club or an on-line exclusive for an e-tailer.

I was hoping too that it would continue and we would get a Hem Dazon, Myo, Feltipern, Dice etc etc etc

:'(  You and your crappy decisions suck sometimes Hasbro Direct!

Watto's Junk Yard / Guilty Pleasures
« on: April 10, 2003, 10:37 AM »
Things you love but don't really tell anyone about ;)  Or things you only have once in a while

Trading Spaces  Ever since I became a home owner I can't help but like this show, no matter how much it challanges my masculinity.  It is really fun to watch and some of those designers are hot!

Cat Stevens Not sure where Cat ranks in the world of music but I hear songs of his and I can't help but smile and sing along.  I think he is one of the most underrated singers of all time

Snickers  Since I have been watching the waistline for a long time now candy bars are pretty much a no no.  But sometimes while standing in line at Target I just get the urge to grab a Snickers and eat the heck out of it, savoring every single bite.

Shania Twain  I really like a lot of her music and she is such eye candy that she just oozes sexy to me.  I really can't stand a lot of anyhting that comes out of Nashville...

Natalie Merchant I have always been a 10000 Maniacs fan and when Natalie went solo she quickly became one of my favorite singers.  Her first solo CD Tigerlilly is one I would be bringing with if I was heading over the Pacific on a FedEx plane.

Pizza  Another of the watching your waistline things but plowing into a Large Papa Murphy's Pepperoni Pizza with an ice cold beer to wash it all down with...

Steak  Steak is one of those foods I enjoy only when properly prepared for me with the right sides, marinated just right and it has to be grilled to the right temperature
