Title: Zica Toys 3.75" Sectaurs Figure Line
Post by: Jeff on May 16, 2017, 11:36 PM
I've neglected starting a thread for this one, but thought it was time.  Back in April, Zica Toys announced plans for a kickstarter to relaunch Coleco toy line Sectaurs as a 4" figure line.

So far they have announced two figures (out of ten planned for the kickstarter) - Dargon and General Spidrax.  Click the thumbnails below for bigger pics:
(https://jedidefender.com/news/images/2017_05/tn_zicatoys_sectaurs_dargon.jpg) (https://www.jedidefender.com/image.pl?https://jedidefender.com/news/images/2017_05/zicatoys_sectaurs_dargon.jpg) (https://jedidefender.com/news/images/2017_05/tn_zicatoys_sectaurs_generalspidrax.jpg) (https://www.jedidefender.com/image.pl?https://jedidefender.com/news/images/2017_05/zicatoys_sectaurs_generalspidrax.jpg)

No bugs are planned for Wave 1, but they are included in the Wave 2 plans if the kickstarter does well enough to justify doing a wave 2.

As a nerd who had a whole bunch of the original line, I'll be keeping an eye on this one...

Oh man the general looks awesome haha.  Stop tempting me.  I don't have it right now but I kinda like these more than I originally thot I would even without the insects.  God I bet I still have the originals somewhere.

Wow, I loved these as a kid.  As a Kickstarter novice, how do I get involved with this?  I couldn't figure out anything from their FB page.

The kickstarter hasn't started yet.  It should be later this year.  Zica has another 4" line (Captain Action) that they are trying to finish up before they kickstart this new line.

A few of the other 3.75-4" kickstarters have found that revealing your line-up and giving collectors a change to save up some cash pre-kickstarter is a bit more advantageous than just jumping into the kickstarter and giving folks a smaller window to see the figures and try to figure out how much they can afford to spend to support the project.

Thanks Jeff!  Any idea how much these tend to run?  If I'm going to start saving up I guess I should have an amount in mind.  These figures look great so far.

This was their first kickstarter (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1728265268/the-new-adventure-people-0).

I'm guessing prices for these would be comparable (and are comparable to most of these small 4" figure kickstarters) - $20ish for a single figure, less per figure as they build different bundles or army builder sets.

Post by: JediJman on May 18, 2017, 04:29 PM
Those prices are pretty good.  $100 for a set of 7?  I would be on board at that price.  $20 is about my threshold unless there's 1-2 figures that really spark my interest (looking at you Vitruvian Hacks armored skeleton).

All these years I never thought about the fact that General Spidrax doesn't wear pants.  He wears a one piece swimsuit.  :o

They are planning to start with ten - eight named characters and then two generic army builder types.  More possible if things go well in the kickstarter.

Quick update - they are up to 7 figures revealed so far.

On Facebook, they recently indicated that they are trying to restructure the kickstarter plan in order to get the mini-pet insect companions done in the first wave.  The "ride-on" insects aren't in the works for the initial kickstarter though.

Also sounds like the kickstarter will now most likely take place in March 2018.

Thanks for the update on these Jeff.  The whole lineup looks great so far!  Would be nice to have the companion bugs in there as well - I'd take that over all these extra hands if that was somehow an option.  I know they're doing their best to map to the original line, but I never had any of the toys as a kid - just the comics.  This might end up being my first Kickstarter...

Just the two generic 'army builder' figures to show off (December and January), then a preview of some of the other stuff in February it sounds like before the Kickstarter is planned to launch in March 2018.

I love that shoulder holster.  Wonder why all the hands?  I see fist hands but I don't see anything to make all the other hands unique.  He'd look pretty at home in my Cantina I do believe.

I don't see anything to make all the other hands unique.

Most aren't - it's just to show they will come with multiple hands.  All the hand sculpts aren't done yet - they have said they are aiming for gun-holding hands, sword holding hands, closed fist and 'posed' hands (fingers spread, palms out, etc).

Post by: Jesse James on November 14, 2017, 06:25 PM
I wish we saw a lot more of that from all these other lines.  Marauder should just offer a bunch of hands in various skin tones and stuff.  I've always wished we had Clone hands and stormies bBds that way.  I loved the hand gestures from the limited voice clone characters in the Tartakovsky Clone Wars series.

This is "the next step" in these smaller scales I think.  Stuff like that would be fantastic with any line.

Now saying the Kickstarter launches later this month for just 2 figures.

But...I might actually get on board this one then. Committing like $50 ain't so bad.

Strange decision to launch on the 28th of January when you've been saying ten figures in March for a while now, but with all the production issues they have had with the first line (Adventure People), I can understand why it's being streamlined to start.

I'll probably put in for the two figures.  If they suck, then at least I'm only out the $50 instead of buying all ten figures...  if they're great figures then I'll happily jump in whenever the other 8 are finally solicited.

I don't mind the two figure start.  I'm still in for these.  I am a little more concerned about the comment that they don't have the Sectaurs license for very long.   :-\

Hey, the Kickstarter for these is active!  It's $40 plus shipping for a two pack of the first two figures, which is a great price considering all that you get with these and the high quality, articulation, etc.  I signed up for two for now.

$40,118
pledged of $40,000 goal

Great to see it passed the mark... but some of that is folks pledging for the army builder stretch goal that was just added.  Some of those folks will take back cash if it looks like we won't hit the stretch goal by the end.  Stretch goals are great when they encourage people to add more money, but they can cause a big $ drop in the last days if the stretch goals dont look likely.

Fingers crossed it stays funded!

Post by: JediJman on February 20, 2018, 06:21 PM
Hooray!  That was a quick turnaround.  How does the troop builder work?  Do you pledge more money now and then apply that to the troop builders somehow?  Or does the $50k need to be in non-troop builder pledges, then at that point they open it up for people to buy them?  Or do you just pledge more money in general and assign it once the milestone hits?  So confused.

Jeff (or anyone else) - any interest in going in on the troop builder 5-pack?  I'd be down for a couple of each figure, so if a few other people want to do the same, we can split the order and save a few bucks.

Post by: JediJman on February 27, 2018, 10:03 AM
Zica announced that the $50k stretch goal has been reached!  Hooray for troop builders!  Can anyone tell me how the backerkit phase of these projects works?  Sounds like buyers just keep increasing their pledge to cover everything they want, then actually place their orders when the backerkit becomes available.  But can you wait until the backerkit to pledge more money or does all the money have to be pledged beforehand?  With so many options and add-ons, its been a little difficult to understand just how much money I need to have in there.

With the announcement of variant heads for the royal guards, I'm springing for a five pack of those as well.  Skull soldiers only have a few variant heads, so tempted to split that one if anyone only wants one or a few of these standard.

They send out a thing and basically you pick what you want, send it in, etc.  It's like placing your order for what you're eligible to purchase based on what is offered at your pledge level (if that run-on makes any sense).  And yeah, usually you can add to it.  Like with Paul's DNL line I was able to really able to add another pile of stuff on and spend a lot more money, haha.  They made a lot of things available to even the lower pledge levels ultimately.

The entire thing is pretty easy ultimately Justin, you'll not have any problems with it.  It will take some time.  Some are faster than others though.  Paul's took a little extra time while they hashed things out as I recall, but like the Boss Fight one came up really fast after the pledging closed I think.

Thanks for the info Jesse!  I'm a total Kickstarter noob, so this is very helpful.  Trying to balance making sure I get what I want without going totally overboard on spending.   :-\  My balance has gone up considerably since I started:

$48 isn't too bad, then $88 for the four figures.  I was just going to get 1x of the Royal Guard and Skull Solider, but with the exclusive  heads I really want to go with the five packs.  That takes me from $128 to $268...yikes!

I was with Paul’s line too so I’m not super experienced but my brother has all-in backed several things now so I have his experience and Jeff I’m sure can be more clear too because he seems to have more experience on these too.  He knows what’s up.  I heard Paul’s was slower to get to the backer kit portion but they also are a smaller group working on it and things.

We just got prototype parts from them in the mail...  test shots specifically for tons of stuff.  It is a slow process I’m finding but as long as you know it’s funding and coming along eventually haha.  🤷‍♂️

The Marauder Inc stuff seems to fly through.  They’ve had so many campaigns though maybe it’s just down to a science for them.

Yeah, Paul's was a bit slower, but that was becuase of the amount of figures and accessory packs and blank figures - size was massive so it took a bit to sort out.

Like Jesse said, BackerKit is basically like a pre-order store.  You pick the figures you wanted based on your pledge and have the opportunity to add-on to your order.  I never got around to tossing in for the army-builder stretch goal because I didn't want that extra cash locked in if the goal wasn't met.

Now, I can grab a couple of the army-builder bad guys and maybe the 5-pack of good guy builders during backer kit.  So, right now, I'm in for:

- main character 4-pack ($80 plus shipping)
- 2x bad guy army builder ($40 plus shipping)

Trying to decide if the variant eye colors is enough to get me to go for the 5-pack or if I'll be fine with saving $50 and just getting two of the regular version...
Title: Re: Zica Toys 3.75" Sectaurs Figure Line
Post by: JediJman on March 5, 2018, 11:34 PM
Okay, that helps.  I probably don't need all 5 of my skull soldier baddies if you want to split a five pack (Only saves $2 per figure I suppose).
Title: Re: Zica Toys 3.75" Sectaurs Figure Line
Post by: Jeff on March 19, 2018, 11:07 PM
Just filled out my backerkit.  I ended up grabbing:

- main character 4-pack ($90) [initial pledge]
- 2x bad guy army builder ($42) [add-on]
- 1x good guy army builder ($21) [add-on]

So $153 total for me.

I had sort of forgotten about these until they were on BBTS front page today when I stopped there. Looks like they are on the way soon-ish. Honestly I never had these as a kid, but was at least aware of them. After learning more about the original line over the past few years, I'm kind of interested in picking a couple up. I'm just a sucker for 80s nostalgia toylines.

Go back and reread the thread, they revealed a bunch but then when it came time for the Kickstarter, they had reduced it to just 2 figures , Dargon and Spidrax. Then they added the other 4 (probably those 4 since they shared so much tooling with Dargon and Spidrax). Yeah, confusing.

I debated supporting this but then the Sail Barge was reveal and I didn't get that because too much money, and now I'm just gonna pout about getting neither.  :(

I did put up the $120+ for a set of 4 in Kickstarter 2.0.  This Kickstarter has really stalled.  Jumped out to 25% and now just hanging there, but I guess that's not a surprise with no real army builders in the wave and nothing on the horizon for unlocks or other incentives.

I'll be bummed if they can't find a way to get these 4 figures made. :(

I signed up for the set of 4 as well, and posted a link to the Kickstarter on a number of sites.  I had a few exchanges with Craig to give him some additional ideas, but got the impression that he has just resigned to these not happening.  I would think scaling back on packaging or accessories, or trying to renegotiate with the factory or the license might help, but not having much faith in this moving forward without a big influx of backers.

Well, so much for that.  Barely made it past 50% of the goal.

So many problems this time around - no real army builder figure, so much new tooling on these 4 figures, licensor not willing to come up with some paint/deco variants for the selected figures to drive down the costs, etc.  Plus it sounds like this was the last chance for these as the license will expire this year.

I'll take what we got, but really wish we could have gotten these other bad guy figures. Reminds me of so many other 90s action figure lines where the line got cancelled after the main heroes but before getting too far into the bad guys. :(

That’s a bummer. I still only have the original two, but I’ve been eyeing some of the others that are available at BBTS when funds are available. Tremendous figures, they really did a great job with these.
