Star Wars Action Figures / Re: SA IG-88?
« on: April 16, 2006, 10:07 PM »
What about reworking the joints with a stikfas style ball joint?  (Similar to Gregorbian's work on GG bodyguard.)  You'd probably need to butcher at least 2 IG-88's to get it right (assuming you're not going to try casting).

Wow, I can't believe I forgot about Stikfas joints  ::).  I am a moron.  I just finished stikfas-jointing a Snow Trooper (replaced all of his joints with stikfas ball-joints to see what it would look like).  In doing that I had to dremel down each Stikfas "male" ball-peg so that it was just the ball and a stick (it looked like a small lollipop, if that makes sense) and then I had to dremel down the female ball-socket.  You would probably have to do the same thing for an IG-88 figure.  Aside from the time-consuming nature of that project, I still think the stikfas joints would be a tad too large.  You might have to beef up the arms a bit more and make him an IG-90 or something  ;)

Great use of G.I. Joe parts Kit Fisto!  Normally I'm not a big fan of G.I. Joe hips/legs on Star Wars customs, but for some reason I don't really notice the different articulation here.  Maybe it's the great paint job/weathering.

That helmet is kickass too, it's different enough so that it obviously isn't a Fett repaint, but it still screams "Mandalorian!" to me.  Great work!

Brent - Man, that Gladiator is AWESOME!  The Dex head on the SSSD Hulk figure is great.  I picked up the Hulk-Wolverine 2-pack for Wolverine and I was planning on doing something with the Hulk figure, but I never got around to it.  I'm glad somebody is using these super-articulated figures for Star Wars customs.  Very well done.

Coleman Trebor - Very nice!  I haven't seen many Coleman Trebor customs, so it's nice to see a well-executed one.  I don't really follow what the problem is with the arm switch - did you cut the Kit Fisto upper arms off of the ball-socket ring and then place them onto Coleman's ball-socket ring?  It's too bad these ball-sockets don't pop out easily when heated  :-\.  Sorry I don't have any idea of how to fix that problem.

Thanks for the kind words everybody!  It is definitely a great motivating factor to receive compliments from such talented customizing brethren   ;D

Brent - I am going to try sculpting small shoulder pads onto the Mandalorian currently without them, hopefully that will make the shoulders look more "natural"

Commander Korba - Yeah, that is a BBi Elite Force head.  I bought it a long time ago and forget which one it is (I'm thinking "mortar team" but I could be wrong).  Last time I checked, TRU.com had them on "sale" (still more expensive than finding them in the store, but lately I have not seen them at retail) and they had the figure that I used "in stock."

Whoa Ron, great sculpting there!  That sculpted jacket looks real!  While I usually try to add more articulation to my customs, if possible, I must admit that the static, mini-diorama-style looks perfect.  Great work as always!

Definitely keep us updated on this man!  I've always wanted to make a life size Boba Fett costume for my future collecting room  ;).  It's too bad about that helmet  :-\.  My friend's dad had one of those Prop Boba Fett helmets from a while ago and I recall it being pretty flimsy.  Hopefully that's not how they are these days, (or maybe he just had a cheaper version, not a Don Post replica).

Anyway, that jetpack construction is very clever and looks great so far.  I can't wait to see it painted up!

I can't say it enough - I am absolutely floored by your incredible sculpting skills!  Factor in how quickly you've been pumping these out and I am absolutely positive you could get a job at some toy company.  I mean, WOW!

DN, sorry to hear about your computer problems; they can be a big pain.  Hopefully your computer will get fixed up soon and we can get some more updates, these guys are looking good! 8)

I'm surprised at how much I like the Boarding Party Trooper.  The parts usage (Evo Stormie lower legs with Clone Pilot body) works very well.  I might have to try something like that with my broken Evo Sandtrooper.  Thanks for the inspiration!

Nice job CHEWIE!  Ever since I saw psychoclonetrooper's version (I think it was him), I've been wanting to make one.  Your version looks absolutely perfect.  The construction looks absolutely "factory" (i.e. seamless integration of parts), and your paint apps are un-freaking-believable.  I've been trying to figure out how you were able to get that weathering to look that perfect, but I'm at a loss.  You truly are the Master of the Drybrush.
Great update!

Wow DD!  That black-armored Darman RULES!  Great work, he looks absolutely perfect (and much better than the stock Scorch figure, obviously).  The modified gun looks great too, I didn't even realize it was modified because everything looked so clean.

The Null ARC is well executed, but I was never a big fan of GaiaGear's version (although it was incredibly crafted, the design didn't really "do it" for me).  Still stylistic differences aside, your rendition does look great. I love all of the weapons and accessories.  Nice work as always.

Nice upgrade ExJedi!  I was going to be "content" with my stock version of Cody, but after I've seen yours, I don't think I'll be able to.  Thanks a lot, more projects on the table  ::).   :P

I think this DOES belong in customs... it was directed as a customizing question.

No, I don't think I've seen one made before that is SA... I wonder if using Microman type parts if it could be done?

 :)

I don't think a Microman figure would work as a base for IG-88.  As Rolla metioned, IG-88's limbs are very thin and while Microman figures do tend to have thinner limbs than Hasbro figures, they would still be about 2x too bulky to work on IG-88.  Even Microlady arms would be too bulky.

The only articulated limbs that might work would be the Army of Darkness Deadite Skeleton Legs (double knee joints) with lots of putty.  That would require an insane amount of work and probably would not look very good.

I like stormtripper's idea, I think that will be the most feasible way of accomplishing this.

The Biker Scout is now my favorite figure of all time.  A perfect blend of super-articulation and great sculpting raised the bar for all figures for me now.
...Must resist buying every one that I see...

Thanks for the comments guys!

About damn time. ;)
Tell me about it, I've been going through customizing withdrawal for the past year  :-\

The Mandos look excellent so far, I can't wait to see how these end up. The Djas holsters are an excellent fit for the fellow on the right. The guantlets look kind of akward on the guy on the right, they seem sort of bulky and don't appear to have anything that would be holding them onto the arm. Any idea on what you are going to do for a color scheme?

You're right about the gauntlets; they don't look so bad in person but I was going to add some strips of greenstuff putty to make the gauntlets look like they're held in place.
As for the color scheme, I want to make one of them in a black jumpsuit (probably the guy on the right), maybe with silver armor plates.  The guy on the left will get a new backpack and will probably be in a dark grey jumpsuit with blue armor plates.   That's all off of the top of my head though, it'll probably be different when I get around to painting them (they've been sitting on my kitchen table for a few weeks...)

Wow, he looks fantastic Ron!  I really like that the flight vest is softgoods, nice touch.
