Lego LOTR and Hobbit (http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118047584)
Totally Awesome
-
Wow, very cool news. It really seems like LEGO has been on fire lately picking up a number of licensees (Marvel, DC, Potter, etc.) to go with what they were already doing. I have to admit to getting more and more tempted by the LEGO line. I've picked up a few of the SW sets and have dreams of getting the Falcon set eventually, and I'll definitely check out the Marvel stuff when it hits. I'd never be a completist with any of it (don't have the money/space unless I sell everything else), but I can certainly see why some get all the way into it. So cool that they'll be handling the LOTR-verse as well now.

Damn right. My guess is these will sell just a teensy bit better than the Prince of Persia ones did.
In addition to all the sets coming, you just know they'll be doing a video game too. I love playing those games.

I just saw this on Facebook and was coming to post. Pretty sure some of these sets will make there way on to my sons birthday wish list
-

That was actually my first thought...can't wait for that
But my next thought is that between Marvel, SW, Harry Potter, DC and LOTR...I may be broke on Lego next year
-
Um, wow.

Oh my, am I ever getting roped into this stuff. ::) Lego sure knows what people want. Cheap? No, but always on sale it seems, and they just know what to do.
-
Picked up a couple of the DCU sets at TRU ther other day. Found the Superman/LL set and the Batman/Catwoman one. I'll be giving them to my six year old for Christmas. He'll be happy to finally have some Batman Lego sets to play with.
-
So I was watching The Two Towers tonight on Starz...
Oh my, the endless Lego possibilities with this franchise.
They already pictured a set of Uruk Hai, but I was just thinking how cool all the other things could possibly be... What are you anxious to see Lego do?
Right off the top of my head, the top one I want to see...
The Balrog. This could be insanely cool, especially if they go nuts with the size of it, but I really would love seeing what Lego can accomplish here. Other biggies come to mind too, but what are the things you're most excited to see?
This line just has me drooling.
-
I want a 10,000 piece UCS Minas Tirith set.
Okay, realistically, I want a really well done Bag End, Rivendell and a town set of Bree, including the Prancing Pony. Isengard is must, but the MOC versions that are out there are so impressive Lego will have to step the game up. Of course, if they do Isengard, they have to do Ents as well.
We'll need plenty of army building sets with Uruk-hai and the Ringwraiths with their mounts. We'll need some Elf archers and plenty of men with swords...and horses. Can't forget Rohan.
For the Hobbit we'll need a big Smaug set among others. Honestly, I need to read the Hobbit again because I'm drawing a blank on what else would be cool to see from that movie. But Bag End and Rivendell work here as well.
E...
-
Smaug, Ents... That type of stuff is a must. Actually, besides the Balrog, Ents were my 2nd vote... I want Ent figures, but I'd prefer them being all bricks with hinged limbs and stuff so they're a buildable figure basically. Some customization/diversity could be had from that.
Smaug, I just saw someone did like a head of him laying on gold coins and bricks, and it's amazing looking. Again, I could totally see Smaug done from just bricks, and be a kit unto himself. Same with the Balrog.
I believe from what I recall of the early set pics, they are doing an Uruk Hai/Rohan army building set, and I saw a set from the Moria tomb with a Troll, Goblins and the Fellowship...
Don't recall a Gondor set, but who the hell isn't going to jump on a set of Gondorian Rangers? Come on!
One set I recall as well was Weathertop, which looked like a pretty good wraith army builder set of sorts, with a good brick selection.
Oh... And a Sauron Figure from the prologue... Oh yes.
From The Hobbit I'd want elf and human army builder sets for sure... The armies don't show up till the end of course, but there's potential. Some spiders would be dandy too. There's great potential for basically all the books/films here. Lego has a gold mine IMO. There's a pretty loyal fanbase and Legos were just made for this and just never had the shot till now.

Oh man am I gonna get sucked into LOTR Legos. :'(
You and me both - just seeing the Fellowship there has me psyched for these sets. I've been re-watching the Extended Editions on Blu Ray the past week or so, so I've been in a LOTR mood lately. Still curious what the new Hobbit toy line will be like, but if nothing else, we know the LEGOs will be quality. It could really be a huge year for LEGO stuff, with Star Wars and now LOTR/Hobbit, Marvel, DC, etc. Lots of neato stuff.
-
Those are pretty awesome. I am going to do my best to stick to Superhero stuff, but will be hard to resist these.
-
The ring accessory... awesome. Gandalf's staff seems designed to let you put crystals and stuff on it too. Fun.
Just wow. :'(

I can feel my bank account starting to whine.

I saw a Minifigs Wave 6 box at TRU yesterday but it was about half full of Wave 5 bags...

Cool. I really like the Orcs.

When the Dwarves series of Castle sets came out I almost bought into them because it was a more interesting piece of the overall line to me. Now with LOTR and Hobbit coming, I'm wishing I hadn't passed. So far I love what they've shown us and can't wait to see some better loose photos of the sets.
On another note, I saw Series 6 of the minifigures at TRU last Saturday. They were already picked over and there was a lady there going through them when I got to the store so I didn't bother to sort through.
But, I stopped at WM after that and they had 4 or 5 boxes in the clearance aisle of S5. They weren't full, but there were a lot there. I went through them all! It took probably a half hour or so but I pulled out 2 Dwarves (I don't think I missed any), 2 Gladiators and the workout chick (pink w/ boom box). That last was an accident, I thought I had the mobster. Passed up a bunch of Palace Guards (have enough) and the only other thing besides Dwarves I was looking for was the Detective, but I had a hard time finding him and didn't end up with one.
If anyone wants a Gladiator or the workout girl and has a Detective I'd love to trade (or a Dwarf <longshot>).
E...
Edited to change Spartan to Gladiator.
-
Man oh man, I'm so into these. This hurts.
-
Man those shots from Toy Fair made me cream my pants...I don't think I've been this excited about anything in a long, long time
-
Yeah, the LEGO stuff sure looks great, can't wait. There is so much potential for what they could do with the line too.

I was tempted to order some sets, although I guess I could wait for June 1 (or whenever). We've been having fun putting together the few SW sets we've been able to get (Landspeeder, X-Wing, Falcon), and have been eyeing the Avengers sets as well. I could see this LEGO stuff getting out of hand as well, but it would be a lot of fun if it was all you collected too.
-
Saw these today at TRU. I really wanted to buy a set but was kinda pissed at the markup. I'll wait for Walmart to get them. I'll definitely get the Shelob and Gandalf sets. I really like the looks of the rest and even though I said earlier that I was probably in on this line, I don't know if I'll actually buy that many. SW and GI Joe are way too expensive this year, with several huge purchases for both coming up, and they take priority over the LOTR sets.
Still, I'm psyched to see what they do with the LOTR sets, especially, and then the Hobbit.
E...
-
The mark-up? I hate to even ask. ::)
I'm going to probably be cautious myself but I'm going to try getting the smaller sets for sure. Helm's Deep is probably off the table for me, and no Orthanc most likely.
-
I stopped by TRU today, and they had the LOTR sets out here as well. As badly as I wanted some of those larger sets (all of them really), I just picked up the "Gandalf's Arrival" set for now. Man, these are tough to resist though. Much like the Avengers sets, I'd like to get the larger ones, but we'll just have to wait and see. If LEGO was the only thing I collected, it would be another thing, but finding the budget (and space) for everything is another story. They all look great though, and hopefully I'll be able to pick up more throughout the year.
-
Greatest aspect of Lego is sales. Lego's always going on sale for some reason, and if I were a collector I'd probably never buy anything full price save for the rare exclusive or whatever. It's a much more predictable hobby, than say action figures.
-
You're exactly right on that, Jesse. Lego's model is working pretty well. Measured releases two times a year with a few special releases in between and then the occasional release for a licensed product. They have frequent sales, you can almost always find something marked down on a rotating basis, and product ships to retail usually for at least a year.
Plus you have all the promos to take advantage of on Shop.Lego.com or in the Lego stores; free minifigures, posters, free shipping, bonus VIP points, etc. They've built an extremely loyal customer base worldwide and nearly all system sets from the various themes not only maintain value, but quite often increase over time.
I can't think of any other toy line that really has going for it what Lego does. The only downside is the buy-in price on some sets. No matter how cool it is, it's hard to drop $400 on a set like the Death Star or Super Star Destroyer. When it comes specifically to SW, I'm at least satisfied that over the last couple of years they've made sure to have some offerings in the $10 - $25 range. There were a couple of years where their entry level was something like $29.99...not their best two years.

I'm in love with the Gollum mini fig
-
My Wal Mart had a few of the sets today...cheaper than TRU to boot
-
My Walmart sold through the whole lot of sets with the exception of Helms Deep. I think it was a clean sweep of all the rest.
And I don't think Target has gotten them in yet.
E...
-
Haven't seen them anywhere locally aside from TRU, but the other stores seem to be doing some resets, so hopefully soon. It is going to be tough to not want to get all of these.
-
The Helm's Deep set is sweet with that cave troll. I also like the simple Arrival of Gandalf set.
-
I saw all of the sets at the local Lego Store, and they all look rather nice. Must resist .....

I got the free mini bagged set with Frodo at TRU this past weekend... nice little freebie to get when I picked up the 2 SW Planet sets I didn't have yet.
Frodo's cool... not sure why he's cooking up sausage and drinking a 40 but he's cool.
-

Loving that Balrog. It'd be nice to get that in a set someday.
-
I think you can look at that package, and pretty much guarantee most of that is coming. I can't wait for that game. :)
-
This game is on my Christmas list, assuming I can wait until then to get it!
-
is this a new set? I haven't seen one yet:
http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=13215033
-
No, that has been out a while
-
I liked that he had a random sausage accessory.
-
I've seen a Gandalf one lately too
-
What was in it Diddly, and was it at TRU? I gotta grab it.
I got Riddles in the Dark this weekend... $10 I couldn't pass it up.
I need to buy LOTR Lego's actually. I want those big sets but I'm so cheap and don't know where I'd put them. I really just want the minis but I hate the idea of shelling out big money for just mini figs that I'd rather have the whole set even if I didn't display it.
-
It was similar to that Frodo with sausage from a few months back... in fact I found it on TRU.com: http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=17792396 (http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=17792396)
So Gandalf with a map, spider, torch and boulder column basically. Price was $5.
I'm not too terribly interested in this line, but I would get some of the smaller sets. Really want the Gollum, so I'm glad he's fairly cheap to get. How Jesse feels with this line is how I feel about the Superhero lines, I could care less if I have the sets on display, I just want the minifigs. :-X
-
Thanks man, I'd have missed that if I didn't know to look for it. :) I think I found what I'm getting the kids besides giftcards.
-
BTW Shelob, on sale at K-Mart for $16.99 which helps make that an easier purchase. Good set since it's all, kinda, mini-figure. From a certain point of view anyway. :P

Saruman! Gandalf the White! Corsair Ship! Eagle!
And I can't tell 100%, but I think that's Mouth of Sauron in the Black Gate set.
-
I agree Mikey...it sure looks like it
-
*gasp*
Oh my.
I'm getting Orc Forge and Moria asap.
I'm so, so, so geeked at those sets. I went nerding on Hobbit Lego's all holiday. Great times.
-
I just picked up the Shelob set at Walmart today and put it together. I really like Shelob, I think it's a pretty cool build but I have a question; does anyone know what the light grey axle and wheels are for on the bottom?
They seem entirely random. I thought they might be there for later in the build, something to do with the "web" but there's nothing in the instructions about that so, unless I imagine some usage, I just don't get it. I took them off. Anyone have any thoughts on that?
Anyway, I braved the snow today and hit up a WM in the next town over. Found the Shelob set for $13 and picked up the Mines of Moria set for $54. They also had Weathertop on sale but I think it was $40 and that didn't seem like as good of a deal. They didn't have Helm's Deep and I don't think they had the add-on Uruk-hai Army set either. They did have Gandalf Arrives but I don't think it was on sale.
E...
-
The axel an stuff is for retracting the string isn't it? I didn't put the string on mine as I didn't want it but I thought that was the purpose... To wind it up. Moria is my next goal. Then Orc forge. Must haves!
-
When you build Shelob, she has the large "bulb" on the back end and the string goes inside that on a spool. The rod that goes through the spool extends through the bottom and there's a Technix gear on the bottom that you use to wind/unwind the string.
But on the bottom of the main body, not part of the bulb, is a light grey 2x2 axle with wheels on each end that doesn't connect to the mechanism for winding/unwinding the string. It seems like it could be of some use w/ the string, but nothing in the instructions shows this and none of the play pattern shown really addresses it either. So, it kind of becomes a useless piece and, like I said, kind of random.
I guess you could come up with something to use it for, with the string somehow, but it just seems like an odd addition.
And one other thing, did anyone else end up with a lot of extra pieces on this set? I had a lot more than usual, I had 3 Rings, 2 Stings, an extra arm for Gollum and some other random pieces. It was a lot of stuff.
E...
-
I had a lot of extras from that set too. I appreciate all the swords they give you tho and now those little tools in the big sets! Wow those r great!
-
We haven't picked up the Shelob set yet (but hope to soon), but my daughter and I have been going through the LEGO site and looking at the various sets and videos. In the LOTR section, if you watch the video for the Shelob set, the designer explains that the wheels were put on there because they found that when kids were playing with that set, they tended to just "shove" Shelob flat to the ground (instead of up on the legs), and they thought they would add those wheels on for when kids would slide her back and forth, instead of having constant scraping. Anyways, that's what the video said, so maybe that helps to explain it.
I'm hoping to be able to pick some of these sets up sometime soon. We got some of the Hobbit sets for Christmas, and those are great as well, but I'd really like to dig into more of the LOTR ones (we just have the Gandalf arrives set). Despite only seeing the "good guy" parts of the LOTR movies, and the trailer for the Hobbit (no Orcs/Goblins for our little one), our daughter has been obsessed with all things Middle Earth lately, and the LEGOs have really taken the top spot as far as that stuff goes. Hope to pick up the Shelob set this weekend if we can find it (a lot of our stores are pretty bare for LEGO stuff since Christmas), and if I had the money, it would be nice to get the Mines of Moria set.
-
That's an interesting idea on Shelob, makes sense to me. Good thing is that it's easy to take off and doesn't hurt the overall design one way or the other. I think that's cool that they explained the reasoning for it though.
E...
-
Watched ROTK tonight... I can't wait for more sets.
-
Just curious, has anyone here picked up the Mines of Moria set? I know they are pretty much dried up from retail (at least around here), but I've been thinking about ordering one from Amazon since I have a $50 gift card from Christmas I could use towards it. I wish I would have pulled the trigger this weekend when I saw it was down to $66 or so there, but it has since sold out (from Amazon itself) and is now listed from other sellers for closer to $80 or more (and TRU.com has it for that price too). Is it worth $80, or would I be better off spending my money elsewhere? My daughter has been loving LOTR/Hobbit stuff recently, and living it basically strictly through LEGO form since the movies are a little too intense, so she's been wanting this set (as have I) to work towards finishing the Fellowship. Anyways, just curious if anyone here has gotten this set, and if it was worth spending $80 or more for.
-
Anyone have a decent link to the new Lego Hobbit/LOTR stuff or was there not much? I didn't see much from the show on this.

I shamelessly picked up Moria and it's awesome. I had a blast building it last night like a 10 year old.
-
Picked up the "Gandalf's Arrival" set for $3.88 at Target. Couldn't pass at that price.
-
I don't have that one, may have to check on that... I was gonna pass, but yeah, under $4's awesome.
-
JediMoses said he saw the new 2013 sets at TRU today...can't wait to get the Black Gate
-
I saw the new sets at TRU as well. They looked cool, but were extremely pricey. The Gandalf v. Saruman set was $15 and Elrond Council was $35. I didn't catch the prices on the bigger sets. This line is so sooooo tempting.
-
I picked up the last Orc Forge at Target... full price, but at this piont I'm not counting on a good sale at all and I dig this little set. I can't wait to see new sets though. :) And if I'm lucky, maybe a Helms Deep on good sale or clearance so I can x it off... Goblin King set wouldn't hurt either.
-
I finally broke down and picked up the Mines of Moria set this week. My daughter and I built the first "half" today, and it has been fun. My hope was to eventually at least get the Fellowship in minifig form, and now to do that I'd need to pick up the Weathertop set to get Aragorn and Merry (and I guess Frodo and Sam are technically ROTK versions). It is tough to not want to go all in with these really though - LEGO has slowly been sucking me in the past couple years between SW, Marvel, and LOTR/Hobbit. Plus, a Harry Potter set for my daughter - I really wish I would have gotten more of those when they were available. We love building all these together. Looking forward to the new sets as well.
-
I saw the new sets at TRU this weekend as well, but held off for the moment. They always seem to be a bit higher there, so it would probably be better to wait it out. I was tempted to get Elrond's council though, or even the wizard battle one.
-
Another big step...
So I got an email that I got $3 in Rewards points at K-mart to use between the 6th and 12th. Sometimes outta the blue, they send you points and it's like $3 to $5 and you basically could use it on candy bars or anything.
Anyway, went to a K-Mart nearby thinking I'd see what Star Wars they have... They had some 2013 Deluxe but not much else, so I strolled past Lego, and they have signage up for 2 things expired... 1 is extra 50% off Clearance which means AT-ST's would've been like $13. ****.
Second though, is Helm's Deep for a scant $110 and change, and it expired yesterday, so I grab one and snap a photo... On top of this, they have a sign up that all Lego sets net you an additional 10% in Rewards points... So that's like $11-ish gonna come back and I have $50 in rewards points stacked up not expiring till next year.
Anyway, I spend $13 in Rewards points (The $10 I'm making up and the free $3 I got) off of the already discounted price of $110-ish and I'm happy as a clam.
I snapped a pic of the sale tag because I knew the set was gonna ring up full price... Told her I had a pic, she didn't even question me, just adjusted the price... Which goes to show they don't even need a supervisor to do anything, she just punched it in and went on about getting me away from her so she could go back to leaning on her bagging rack.
So Helms Deep is mine... Goblin King is all I need now.
-
I finally broke down and picked up the Mines of Moria set this week. My daughter and I built the first "half" today, and it has been fun.
Gave that set to my son on his birthday - May 23. It's amazing!
-
I saw the new sets at TRU this weekend as well, but held off for the moment. They always seem to be a bit higher there, so it would probably be better to wait it out. I was tempted to get Elrond's council though, or even the wizard battle one.
My TRU also had those out - but both stores now pulled them off the shelves.
Street date or something?
Did get my son the little Gandalf vs. Sauramon set though before they pulled them, and we put it together. He really wanted it for Sauron's "eye."
-
Built Helm's Deep Sunday... It's definitely more detailed and fun than I thought it would be. The Berserker Uruk Hai is insanely cool/cute. Haldir is meh, but at least I have him. I wish, for the price, they'd loaded you up with a couple extra Rohan archers for the walls.
The set's complexity on the rounded parts on the main gate are pretty slick. I like the way they did that stuff.
The graphic on the back of the box of the wall blowing up with the Berserker just sailing through the air makes me lol every time I look at it.
-
The big tower is available on LEGO Shop for VIP Members only until July 1, when it goes on sale for everyone. Free shipping on orders over $75!
-
Saw some new sets this weekend at a TRU... I'm giddy to buy something at a more reasonable price.
Their BOGO deal they had going almost got me to buy Elrond & Mirkwood sets though. I think that'd actually be an ok price when all the smoke cleared. And Elf overload.
-
Saw the new sets at Target yesterday...cool looking sets! I really like the Mouth of Sauron. I would think a Tower of Sauron isn't too far behind the Orthanc tower.
-
Saw some 2013 sets at target today. Nice to see a less than absurd price on new ME Legos. :)
-
Picked up 9473 Mines of Moria at Target last night for 50% off.
Thursday is the normal markdown day for clearance items at my store so I actually stopped in yesterday morning on the way to work and scanned that set, it was still about 30% off. Got out of work and it was 50%. I also missed out on one of the larger Galaxy Squad sets I'd been waiting on for 50% off. They had 3 or 4 yesterday morning, gone when I got there in the PM.
Lego does not sit around on clearance prices.

My Target finally put out all the new sets, and I got the Wizard battle set. Wow it may be the finest single set they've ever done for the Middle Earth lines. It's simplistic but awesome. The Eye is too cool inside the palantir and spins around. Just love that set now.
-
Spotted more clearances, at Walmart this time. Helm's Deep for $89, Uruk-hai sets for $21 and Gandalf Arrives for $9 I think.
The Hobbit sets included Mirkwood Spiders, Wargs, Unexpected Gathering ($49) and Goblin King Battle for $69.

Eric I hope those hit here like that. I want Goblin King and Spiders. :( Still need both.
-
Of all my WM visits this weekend only one had Gandalf sets. I nabbed one of the two they had. $9, I figured I'd cave.
They had Moria on clearance and I'm thinking if I see that for insanely cheap I'll buy just for the extra Wraiths and toss the bricks into my old bin of grey bits/castle Legos... I should just sell that stuff off and raise LOTR Lego money at this point.
I didn't see anything LOTR on clearance but those two though... Helm's Deep was full price, as were the Uruk Hai sets they had.
-
My Target had the Gates of Mordor on 30 % Clearance...no room for it or the Ship on the shelves. They do have Elrond's Council on the shelf though.
-
Damn that's a nice early find Scott. I'd have picked that up for that price right away.
I'm still dragging my feet on the spiders Hobbit set wishing I could get some kinda discount on it. :-\ The only new set I've bought is the wizard battle which is a great intro/one-buy type set for someone wanting a LOTR lego set but not a space hog or to pay too much. It's perfect.
-
Yeah I bought it while skipping to the register like a little school girl. I'd check smaller Targets JJ
-
Thanks for the heads up Scott, noticed that both the pirate ship and Gates of Mordor sets were both moved to a clearance endcap at our local store as well. Mighty tempting...
-
And now today I ended up picking up the Gates of Mordor set. The bottom shelf was full of Mordor/Corsair Ship yesterday on 30% clearance, today there was only one of each left so I couldn't pass it up. I'm tempted to grab the other if it hangs around long enough, although I really don't know where I'm going to put all of these LEGO sets :).
-
Had a nice find today at our local Target. There was a single Pirate Ship Ambush set on the shelf, so I took it to the scanner to check it out....and it rang up at $29.98. I wasn't decided if I was going to get this set or not, but at that price I couldn't pass it up. After discounts and everything it ended up at around $27, so not too bad. Sort of makes me want to hunt down the few others I'm still missing from the LOTR lineup, but we'll see.
-
That is a heckuva deal...congrats! I still need one of those and the Council of Elrond and I will be all caught up
-
I had $10 off at K-Mart in Rewards points expiring soon, so I bought Council of Elrond tonight Scott... it is awesome for display. I just wish I had extra Boromir, Legolas, a couple elf guards, and Aragorn (and maybe a couple of the extra people/dwarves/elves that were there) to slip around the display for fun. I'd have appreciated Boromir a lot, but I figure he's gonna show up in some Merry/Pippin/Boromir/Lurtz set with ruins.

Good deal on the Pirate Ship at Amazon
http://www.amazon.com/LEGO-LOTR-79008-Pirate-Ambush/dp/B00C9X59S4/
-
I missed. :'(
I need this and the Black Gate, and Saruman's bachelor pad.
I keep hoping I can get Orthanc for a little less than the steep $200. :-\ It's THE set I wish would drop a bit in price so I could scoop it up.

I don't think you're going to see any of the larger "hard to find" sets on sale...LEGO put a stop to that at their stores and online a few months ago but not sure how they enforce that with other etailers - but I've not seen a sale on any of them anywhere since then.
I believe you can still use your VIP card - and nothing wrong with free shipping and no tax from Amazon (while it may or may not last)
-
Amazon has tax in states with distribution centers (PA being one), though free shipping is nice... But Lego seems to have free shipping fairly often. No VIP points since I don't order off them and no Lego stores here.
-
I think Lego offers free shipping on anything over $75 pretty much all the time now. Some of these larger sets, and the ones that are Lego exclusives, don't get discounted very often and usually not when they're brand new like the Tower or the new Ewok village. But if they're around for a while you might see a discount.
What can end up as a better deal is if you're a VIP member you can pick sets like this up and during their specials get double or even triple VIP rewards points which then lets you save money later. Two weeks ago on Saturday they did a 1 day triple VIP offering so I ordered the Rancor set and a couple polybags. There was tax on the order but they were also doing a free shipping promo (I didn't hit $75 but they may have lowered it to a $50 threshold during that offer) so I didn't pay any more than I would have at retail. Plus, the 221 VIP points will get me a decent $10 discount later on.

Yeah I've never ordered off them... I signed up for the VIP thing, but don't even recall my log in information. I will have Orthanc, one way or another. It will be mine... Just not anytime soon.

So I decided to take the plunge into the LOTR & Hobbit Lego sets this weekend. From the LOTR line I picked up:
Attack on Weather Top - was shocked to find this actually, it was sitting by itself at my local Kmart - turned out to be marked for clearance and I ended up getting it for only $35 - might have been a return or something...
Battle at the Black Gate - just finished putting this together, love the scene in Return of the King that it's from, the helmet of the Mouth of Sauron is really detailed.
The Wizard Battle - picked this up "just because" - I do plan on getting the Tower at Orthanc at some point, just just like Jesse says, just not anytime soon.
So for the next couple of months, I'm going to focus on scouring stores and online for deals on the 2012 sets. I know the Battle at Helms Deep or Uruk-Hai Army sets are probably going to be the tough ones to track down. I'm pretty sure sets like Gandalf Arrives and Shelob Attacks are both still sitting at the TRU near my work, same with Mines of Moria so I'll probably pick those up next. Should be fun getting caught up with this line....
-
Cashed in Amazon Rewards and XMas gift cards and pulled the trigger on Orthanc this morning. I am officially caught up on LOTR LEGO now, hopefully we get some more sets in Fall 2014. I really really really want Minas Tirith and Edoras. I'd also dig a matching Tower of Sauron
-
I picked up the Battle at Helms Deep set from the Toys R Us near where I work. Through the 11th of January they are running a special where you get $15 off any Lego purchase of $60 or more - the shelf tag for the set was $139.99 which if you take $15 off takes it down to $125.99 - which isn't great, but it's $4 off the original MSRP price of $129.99 - and certainly much better than paying eBay/Amazon Vendor mark-up for it.
The great part was when I went to check out, the register rang it up for $149.99 and I went and grabbed the shelf tag and made them give it to me for the $139.99 price, so thanks to the shelf tag error, I was able to get it for $25 off of TRU's over-inflated price....
I also picked up Shelob Attacks.
So from the 2012 sets I still need: Gandalf Arrives, Uruk-Hai Army, Mines of Moria and the Orc Forge. The Mines of Moria set is also at my local TRU - but for $99.99 which is $20 over MSRP. It's also on TRU.com and Target.com for that price - so I might just bite the bullet and get it before the $15 off deal expires at TRU, which again, is better than paying eBay/Amazon mark-up.
The other three sets and the polybag figures are going to be pretty painful I think...
-
Orc Forge is gonna be a bear for you I think, and Uruk Hai Army would be tough too since that set is really the army builder of its year more or less.
Gandalf's arrival, eh, if you're doing this for completism, otherwise I'd pass.
Shelob was a favorite of mine because it makes me dream of a Kit Balrog, a Kit Smaug, and so forth. Kit Nazgul anyone? :P
I can't see Smaug or a Balrog as a specialty figure thing. Kit Ents will be nice when they're mainstreamed too.
-

Yeah - those two are gonna be the worst I think too - but since I have been able to pick up all of the other sets so far at or less than MSRP and since I'm jumping into a line that started two years ago, paying mark-up on two of the sets isn't that bad. I have thought about calling around to the two Lego stores in town and seeing if either of them have the set still in stock - while it's a long shot, anything is possible.
There seem to be plenty of eBay vendors selling Gandalf Arrives at or just a few dollars more than MSRP - so that one shouldn't be bad at all - mini-fig-wise though, both of the figures in the set were in other sets so that one is probably lowest on my priority list.
-
Yeah his fireworks and the letter are nice, but meh.
I love the Orc Forge, and it really ultimately goes as a complement to Orthanc, so while it'll be a pain, I think you'll dig it. It's one of my faves.

Yeah - I've decided that it will be the next set I pick up - most likely off of eBay.
-
Orthanc isn't meant to expand, but it'd look awesome with a couple of it cobbled together. It's not quite as big as I'd like, but it's still sizable.
-
Just in case anyone is looking for the Pirate Ship Ambush set from LOTR: Return of the King - it's on sale this week at Toys R Us for $90.99 - it's normally $119.99 and sells on Lego Shop@Home for $99.99.
Walmart has it on their site for $90.30 and Target has it on their site for $90.99 - not sure if those are the regular prices or not - or if they've reduced their prices to match Toys R Us.

Pirate Ship was $70 on clearance at many Targets over the Summer (where I got mine) and I believe the same price at Amazon during the recent sales they've had over the holidays which have now sailed at this point.
-
I paid $70.99 for the Pirate Ship back in November, I don't think it is being retired yet...might be worth waiting a bit
-
Yeah I'd bite at that price in a heartbeat... I want it, but part of me doesn't want it THAT bad since it's a massive spacehog.

It is, but it's downright miniscule compared to the Imperial Flagship, Queen Anne's Revenge and Black Pearl.
I think I got mine for like $65 from Amazon in November/December.
-
Entertainment Earth has both the Uruk-hai Army and Gandalf Arrives sets listed as "Coming Soon" - so they must have picked up some close-out or something, I ordered something else for my wife so I threw two of the Uruk-Hai Army set and one of the Gandalf Arrives set into my cart - fingers crossed that they actually get these in.
That leaves me with just the Orc Forge for the 2012 Box Sets. Still trying to decide what to do re: the Poly Bag Mini figs....
-
Had $7 in Kmart rewards and got another $5 worth that were expiring tomorrow. Hit my local Kmart on the way home and ended up getting the Pirate Ship Ambush set (the only set they had that I already didn't). It was on sale for $76 so factor in the rewards I got it for $64 and change and that included tax. Not as good as some of you were able to do, but still not a bad price.
-
Picked up over the weekend (via eBay)
The Orc Forge ($64 - including shipping)
2x Uruk-Hai w/ballista in polybag
2nd Age Elrond mini-fig in polybag
Once I receive these AND my pre-order from Entertainment Earth for the Uruk-Hai Army and Gandalf Arrives sets - I'll be down to just needing the Tower of Orthanc & Frodo w/Cooking Corner polybag set.
-
Picked up the Tower of Orthanc on Friday to bring my Lego LOTR collection one more step closer to being "complete".
Got it with double VIP points so I'll have a good amount of rewards bucks to put towards the Sandcrawler next month.
-
Sorry for the stupid question, but I was looking through both LEGO's site and this year's SDCC and Toy Fair coverage, and are there any new Lord of the Rings sets on the way this year? I know we have at least a couple more for The Hobbit, but wasn't sure about LOTR proper. I'm guessing this is sort of the last hurrah for both lines since the final movie is out in December?
-
I believe LOTR is DOA.
-
They did this last year iirc where Hobbit's the focus, then LOTR will be back, and so on and so forth.

I will be incredibly surprised if that ends up being the case - like iFett said - I believe Lego LOTR is pretty much done. It's not being carried at either WalMart or Target and the stuff doesn't move at Toys R Us...
