Title: Star Wars: The Force Awakens (SPOILER FREE)
Post by: Jeff on June 2, 2014, 11:16 AM
NOTE: THIS IS A SPOILER FREE THREAD FOR OBVIOUS REASONS - spoiler posts will be removed in their entirety. ;)

Well, the first big test is here.  TMZ has posted a whole bunch of shots reportedly from the set of Episode VII.

Are you gonna look at them?

Are you going to feast on every tidbit you can get your hands on hoping to head into December 2015 pretty much knowing everything that's gonna happen?

Or, are you going to swear off Twitter and Facebook and ignore whole sections of Star Wars fan sites (like this one) hoping and praying to know as little as possible as you head to the theaters in December 2015?

I will try to avoid some things, but early photos & casting are fair game for me.  I don't think I can make it 18 months without some kind of general awareness of the movie.

I looked at 'em...  If it's real spoiler-ish, I will likely avoid.  Those pics were just random stuff that could've been from any scene practically so yeah I'm not bugged by that stuff I guess.

I would like to avoid plot points though, or any major character reveals I think.

I just hope there aren't any big spoilers in the trailers.  I still wish that LFL would have kept Maul's double-bladed saber secret until the movie.  That was a "Holy ****!" moment that would have had more impact seeing it first in the film instead of "I know he's got two blades."  That moment alone was worth price of admission.

I'm going to try to avoid as much as I can, but unfortunately for me my curiosity usually gets the best of me.  I'm actually more excited for my sons (they will be 10&11 at the time of release).  I was 10 when ROTJ came out and can still remember listening to the Top 5 music countdown on the local Chicago radio station every night to see if the Ewok Celebration song was still #1.  I also remember only seeing trailers once or twice for the movie and going in not knowing anything about what was going to happen.  It was awesome.

They love The Clone Wars, go crazy for Yoda Chronicles and are really looking forward to Rebels, so I'm sure they are going to go out of their mind when the trailers start coming out.  That's going to be one fun Christmas break.  I'm sure we'll go several times to see it!

I had decided to stay away from spoilers like I did for the prequels, but Facebook is making that damn near impossible. Guess it's another reason I should leave...

I'm going to do my best to stay spoiler free but keeping free of ALL info? Yeah that's not gonna happen, considering the length of time until the movie comes out, along with visiting this website. Plus it seems like EVERY website has new info whenever it comes out.

If we're doing spoilers, can we have two separate threads?  I'm terrible at avoiding them and am going to try this time.

'Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Breaks Fandango Ticket Sales Record (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/star-wars-force-awakens-breaks-833298)

"The site sold eight times as many tickets as it did on the first day of sales for the previous record holder, 'The Hunger Games.'"

I think the big theater near my house is up to 22 showtimes between 7pm and midnight on 12/17, with another dozen shows after midnight.  If things keep selling out it sounds like some places will end up showing TFA on 75-90% of their screens that night.

Not sure which to see it on. Have a theater with 'DBOX' seating(shaking seats, I saw Godzilla on it) or IMAX. The DBOX theater has a huge screen too, though not as big as IMAX.

Post by: Matt_Fury on October 20, 2015, 09:37 PM
I got one seat for me for IMAX for the 17th and a digital 2-D on the 18th for me and my oldest.  Cinemark.com was a nightmare last night and Fandango was even worse!

Presales tickets for TFA shatter the record held by the Hunger Games back in 2012. Disney would like to see more that $208 million in opening weekend sales that were set by Jurassic World.

Is anyone doing the 24 hour Marathon Viewing of all 7 episodes?  I really want to, but am just seeing the 7:00 with family and friends this time around.
Title: Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens (SPOILER FREE)
Post by: Jeff on October 21, 2015, 12:58 PM
The kids and I will be doing a home marathon - watching one flick each Saturday night starting 11/7 and then seeing Ep7 on Saturday 12/19.  (yes, including 1-2-3 since they actually like the prequels).
Title: Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens (SPOILER FREE)
Post by: Nicklab on October 21, 2015, 01:24 PM
I was thinking about doing something similar at home.

The marathon SOUNDS great until you actually think about the details.  24 hours in a movie theater can be kind of rough, just from a sleep deprivation standpoint.  I'm used to getting up for work at 4 AM, so that part of it isn't so much the concern.  But sitting in a theater for THAT LONG?  And to have the movie that you really want to see, THE FORCE AWAKENS after watching both the PT and the OT?  I don't think I'd want to be that tired going into the new movie.

We'll be doing the same, but I think we'll skip 1-3.  I think they're relevant to the 4-6 story line, but I'm not sure how relevant they are to the 7+ story line.

I agree with Nicklab. That's a lot of Star Wars, and it's going to be hard enough waiting through that week.

I'll probably watch a movie a night leading up to TFA, maybe throw in stuff like the Tartakovsky Clone Wars, or the un-special OT on VHS if I can swing it.

It's a lot of ANYTHING, truth be told.  I remember a few years ago I had like 3 days off, and it was summer movie season.  I had some free time and decided to see the first Transformers movie in the theater.  And I had plans that same night to go see a Harry Potter film that night with friends.  Wow, what a mistake!  Feel free to bash the Transformers movie because it's definitely an easy target.  But after that Harry Potter movie?  I was EXHAUSTED!  I couldn't believe how seeing two blockbuster films on the same day in a movie theater wiped me out, even with as much as three hours in between each one.  That experience alone left me very, very wary of doing a movie marathon.  I thought about doing it with the Lord of the Rings films, but those movies are even longer than any of the Star Wars movies.  I would much rather do a series of screenings, but still be well rested and able to enjoy the movie.  And most of all, to let the new film stand on it's own.

When the Special Editions came out I bought tickets to every showing on opening day of ANH. I skipped two of the evening showings but my body ached from the sitting the next day. And that was almost 20 years ago. These days I would probably not be able to make it.

10 years after that my wife surprised me with tickets to an OT marathon at the local art house. It was fun and she was a real trooper since she is not a fan, but it was a full day and the only time I've ever sat through them back to back like that.

We will probably watch the saga in order that week one a night. I still self-edit ROTS for the sake of my 6 year old son. No marathon for me, not even stretched out on the couch. I am no longer the young man who can sit that long. Funny to realize that.

Dammit, they are making this hard...  it seems like every time I turn around this week I'm running from some new TV spot or international clip or Disney XD clip or ABC TV clip.

If was much easier during TPM and AOTC when I was eating up all the spoilers I could find...  :-\

I haven't sought out the TV clip as I was a little bummed I saw the Japanese trailer.  Is the TB clip something I should try avoiding, or is it just cool random stuff like TIE/X-Wing dogfighting.  TIEs coming out of the sun, etc?

I'm with you Jeff, every day is a battle.  I used to spend a lot of time on Yahoo but it seems like every other article is about TFA spoilers.  The next five weeks can't go by fast enough...

I've seen all the trailers and TV spots so far and except for one thing in the international trailer (but seriously, we knew something was going on there anyway), I have no real details about the plot.

I do know there's going to be one hell of a flight through Jakku with the Falcon and some TIE fighters!  :D

Well, I'm already slated to see it Thursday, Friday and Saturday (tickets in hand), so I can easily see this breaking records for opening weekend.  Every theater around my area is sold out, so I have a feeling this is going to be pretty epic.

Spoiler leaks are getting real now it seems.  Think I'm gonna be very wary of social media till I see it.  I'm not staying 100% free of them anyway, but I'd rather not see huge stuff revealed which seems like it inevitably will be.

I agree. I am too. You just know as soon as the movie is released every critic and self proclaimed blogger is going to say it sucks big time and dub Abrams as Jar Jar Abrams even if the movie is really good.

That's a LOT of black stormies to piss off either racist people or fans who didn't realize they weren't clones.

I like to think it made some white trash guy's head implode though.

Uh, Jesse, what would consider the term "white trash" to be?
Because if one were to put another color in front of "trash", it can get quite racist.

Just sayin', is all.

Very good ;D  Been a long time since I walked out of a movie as excited and exuberant as I was tonight.  Fits nicely with the OT in a way the PT never quite achieved and really has that more "familiar" feel to it.  Long-time Star Wars fans, plus new ones, will enjoy it.  I'm going to see this one again, and again, and again ;)

Incredible movie! Everything felt so real and alive. The dialog was smart, funny and emotional. Rey was the star of the movie. Han, Chewie and Leia never missed a beat in their ping ponging off of each other. A really sad moment that we all knew was coming but hoped it didn't. It needed more R2 but BB-8 filled in well. That is one fast and durable droid. This is a huge home run for J.J. and makes the prequels look incredibly bad.

'Star Wars' awakens to biggest box office opening ever (http://money.cnn.com/2015/12/20/media/star-wars-the-force-awakens-opening-weekend-box-office/index.html)

Quote
"Star Wars" now rules the box office galaxy.

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" became the biggest opening in movie history bringing in an estimated $238 million in the U.S. this weekend.

The film flew past the opening weekend record held by Universal's "Jurassic World," which made $208.8 million on the weekend it opened in June.

So far the film has made $517 million around the world since opening overseas on Wednesday. This is the second highest global debut of all-time behind only "Jurassic World," which made $525 million globally in June.
However, "The Force Awakens" has yet to open in China, the world's second biggest film market. It will open there on January 9.
