Post by: Rune Haako on January 20, 2007, 06:56 PM
Anyone keep any reptiles as pets?

I have two Leopard Geckos, here they are.

I thought about getting reptiles recently but seeing Hillary's face on TV so much of late has filled that void for me nicely.

Instead I got a pair of betta fish, they're fun.

We got a puppy last spring and I've been in PetSmart and PetCo more in the last 9 months than I ever was when we had our last dog.  Anyway, the kids like to stop and look at the reptiles whenever we're there.  They look like a lot of work, maybe just because they're so foreign to other pets we've had.  So we're holding off any more animals until we get the dog under control.

As a kid I had 3 box turtles (Arkansas Terrapins), and they were a blast.  They didn't have heat lamps and ate vegetables, we were probably pretty poor in taking care of them but they seemed to do really well.  Thinking about it now, we probably really messed them up.  Especially when my dad decided it was time to return them to the wild after a few years of captivity.  I never really thought about that as a kid.

Yeah.  We'll be passing on any reptiles any time soon.  Yours look really cool though, and well taken care of.  Thanks for posting the pictures, my kids were interested in their names.

I have read though that handling them can give you hairy knuckles.  Or something like that.

I was kidding around about the hairy knuckles, based on this close up photo:

I've got a pair of leopard geckos too - they're back in Florida at the girlfriend's parents house - eye candy for her nephew.

They're about 12 years old now.  That's Banjo on the left, and Jumbles on the right.

12 years old?  I had no idea reptiles of that size would live that long.

They can live like 20 years, I think the oldest one that ever lived was 30.

Cool Leopard Geckos Rob! ;D

Thanks!

As for the age... it was kind of funny.  I got them in 8th grade and had no idea at the time they could live to be so old.  When I left for college, my mom was taking care of them and one weekend I came home to visit and there was an article cut out of hte newspaper on my desk.  In it, it said they routinely live to be 20+ years old.

Attached was a note from my mom that said "we need to talk".

Good stuff.

Rune, how come that bottom one is kind of whitish-transparent?

Not to answer for him, but I'm guessing that's practically a new born.

While he's answering questions, my kids would like to know how you pierced the little ones ear.  Where did you find that Gecko sized gold ear ring?  Do Geckos even have ears?

Mine don't have ears per-se, they have holes in their heads.  Literally.  I'm sure they're ears of some sort - but you can shine a light on their heads and pretty much see through them.

The whitish Gecko is a bred-in color variant. My sister has 3 leopard geckos..had them for 10 years so far.

We currently have...

My wife's herpetarium includes 6 Anoles
x2 Bahama Anoles (1M, 1F)
x4 Green Anoles( 2M, 2F)

My son has 3 other Herpetariums

1 tank with X1 Crotaphytus collaris (eastern collard lizard)
1 tank with x1 Crotaphytus Bicintores (Mojave desert collard lizard) and x2 Elgaria multicarinata
(southern alligator lizards)-- one is 15 inches :o!
1 tank with x1 Eumeces skiltonianus(Western Skink) + 3 tree frogs(but they don't really count to mention since this is a reptile thread).

The collard lizards are known to live a long time as well...my son has kept one of the collard lizards plus the alligator lizards for 3+ years now.

Tell the truth, now....you're that guy who starts fights in titty bars aren't you?

My valtrex post had nothing whatsoever to do with you.  It had to do your choice of a silly word when a less silly one would have sufficed.  If I'd have said I took my kids out for a nice pupu platter, I'd have expected a silly joke too.  In fact, if I'd have said that, it would likely have been to intentionally play straight man for someone else to pick up the joke.

I didn't find your 'joke' funny, only offensive as I already expressed-no matter how you try to explain or pretend otherwise to make you look good. Cut the bull**** trolling now. If you have something to add about the topic..IE having reptiles as pets then do it, cut the derailments here and troll on some other thread. I can think of another place where you can go to start ****....

That is enough gentlemen! Take it to a PM or e-mail & leave it off the forum!

You'll need a thicker skin to survive in this joint.  That was a minor quip over the word herpeterium, not a shot at your family.

Relax.

That sounds cool, David.  There was a mantis in our backyard last year, but the kids weren't around to see it.  I'm hoping I see more this year.

As for your "problem"...
