Title: Golf
Post by: FX-7 on June 26, 2003, 10:58 AM
I love to golf, I really do, problem is where I live most of the courses suck!  I was just down in AZ and played some relaly nice courses there managed to shoot under a 100 at one.  ANyone else here golf?

I'm in the process of learning.  In fact, I was at the driving range yesterday.  And boy, do I need to take a lesson!  That, plus the irons I'm using are just a little short for me.

Oh, I need lessons as well. Everything gets sliced...I am not too shabby with the putter though.  IF I could learn how to chip I would be in business

I came close to nailing the range attendant more than a few times.  And he was about 20 yards over to my right :(  I did smakc a few nice 150+ yard drives.  Not bad since I haven't picked up a club in almost a year.

I started putting a set of clubs together through the goodwill $1.50 bin!  I've been out on the course 2 times now.  The first time I shot a 134 on a par 72!  The last time(with my brother) we didn't keep score.  I did sink a 25 ft uphill putt from just off the green, and later hit the pin from 40ft out with a wedge.  Those were my only 2 redeeming shots of the day...  I have to turn about 30 degrees to the left of the fairway when teeing off, that's the only way I can get it close to staying on, otherwise I'm WAY off in the bushes to the right of the fairway.

I love this game!  It's a blast just to get out there and walk around and bs with your friends.  Especially if you don't keep score or care who wins. ;D

I love to golf, not very good at it but I do love it.  I went last week and shot a 92, which means I am improving little by little.  I have pretty much cured my slice problem.  Duffing it off the tee box has been a slight problem for me.

I've wanted to invest in a Callaway Bertha for a while now but can't justify the chinge on it to the Mrs.  Especially since I only play 7-8 times per year

Putting for me is also my strong suit, must be from my days at the neighborhood Mini Golf Course :)

I used to golf a little bit when I was in my high school days, and I had actually taken lessons back then.  However, I haven't golfed in more than 10 years I bet.  I wouldn't mind trying to golf again, but there aren't any affordable golf courses in my area to practice on.  Everything out here in the Chicagoland area are very expensive.  Plus I would want to take up lessons before going out on the course.

Post by: Lemon-Viper on June 26, 2003, 12:24 PM
I'm a 3-4 putter usually.  I think my putter came from one of the mini-golf courses :-\  The only club I've paid more than $2.00 for is my wedge, I bought it for $10 at Garts Sports on sale.  This is of course my learner set, I'll eventually get a nice set....eventually.
Title: Re: Golf
Post by: Nicklab on June 26, 2003, 12:40 PM
I inherited my clubs from my brother-in-law.  He gave me his King Cobra driver, and I even managed to get than "ping!" out of it.  I still have a slice going, so I'm gonna invest in a couple of lessons.

If I start getting better, I might try buying a used set.  My brother in law got himself a pretty good set of year old, barely used Titleist's for about $300, so if I start investing more in some clubs, I'll do that.

One thing I found I was doing was swinging way, way to hard.  You really don't need to try and kill it to get a nice 250 yard drive...
Title: Re: Golf
Post by: Nicklab on June 26, 2003, 12:50 PM
I've been trying to relax in my swing.  Thing I'm doing wrong is  gripping the club too hard.  My right hand is killing me today!
Title: Re: Golf

Love to golf?  Yes.  Real good? No.  I can't hit my driver to safe my life but I have a nice 3 iron tee shot, about 240 yard if I hit it right.  I agree with Scott.  When I first started, I tried to kill the ball.  After playing more rounds and getting advice from way better golfers than I, I learned to relax and swing more smoothly and the improvement has shown.

And the best part about golf?  Drinking.  I'm good for at least a six pack on an 18 hole course.  :-*
Title: Re: Golf
Post by: Scott on June 26, 2003, 03:16 PM
A 6 pack!  Holy Hanna!  One nice thing about the Twin Cities is that they really overbuilt golf courses in the past few years.  That makes Greens Fees pretty reasonable golf and some pretty nice courses
Title: Re: Golf
Post by: Mikey D on June 26, 2003, 03:17 PM
It's really not that bad when it takes 5+ hours to play 18 holes.  Plus I hold my liquor well. :-*
Title: Re: Golf
Post by: Lemon-Viper on June 26, 2003, 03:25 PM
I'm moving to an area where golf course green fees are going to be anywhere from $16-$50 for 18 holes.  I'll most likely stick to the $16 crap holes!

A 6 pack isn't much for that length of time, of course I'm a lightweight and would be falling over at 3, so what do I know ;)

A friend of mine has one of those nifty beer totes that looks like a club up top.  It's usually empty by the 8th hole though.

I like disc golf.

I assume that's the same thing as "frisbee golf", right David?  If so, that's pretty fun, though I've only played it a couple times...

As for the real golf, Patty and I haven't touched our clubs in well over a year now, but the house that we just bought is in a neighborhood that has a "homeowner's association" (and corresponding monthly fee), but included in that is a 9 hole golf course throughout the area that we get to play for free anytime we want!  It's just a bunch of par 3's, but it's kept up extremely well and will definitely help fine tune our games to the point where we've got enough confidence to head out into public again to do the real thing!  Can't wait to move in!   8)

Post by: Morgbug on June 26, 2003, 11:43 PM
Mmm, golf.  Golf good.  golf fun.  golf pretty.

Ok, the last one is taking it a bit too far.

Perhaps because of my advanced age (ahem) I golf a wee tad more than you folks do.  Also my job drags me all over the province and often overnight, so rather than sitting in a hotel and watching tv, I go out and golf.  Last year was rather sad, I only played 18 rounds (18 holes), not enough for a true handicap on the year.  I don't bother counting 9 hole rounds.

I like to play and have invested some serious coin into my clubs with more to come.  For me, it's a trade off with toys and golfing.  More toys means less stuff for golfing.  My current set up is as follows:
Titleist DCI 990 irons, 2-PW stiff steel shaft
Cobra Gravity back driver (xtra stiff shaft, graphite, 9 degree loft)
Cobra gravity back 3 wood, stiff shaft ( they don't make one with xtra stiff shaft)
Purespin Lob wedge (want to replace it with a Titleist Vokey)
Wilson sandy andy sand wedge (also due for replacement with Titleist Vokey)
Ping Anser putter

Those Vokey wedges run around $140 Cdn brand new, so you can see where that would impact my toys.

Like Scott and MInnesota, Manitoba is blessed with an abundance of beautiful and relatively cheap courses.  Green fees range from $17-65.  Cheap no matter how you cut it.  That $65 green fee is a private club that hosted a senior PGA event two years ago.  I have a buddy (best man at my wedding, 10 long years ago) that is a member, so I get to play there 2-3 times a year.

For anyone that cares or understands, my handicap is 14.5.  Should go down this year.  Please excuse the bragging but the last round I shot was a 74 ;D

And in case I didn't say it, I love golf.

Scott, check ebay for used clubs.  Pretty good shape, pretty good savings.

Sounds pretty cool!  I have a similar situation.  My dad is retiring, and moving to a community that has a pretty nice course.  I can get something of a deal on greens fees there, and I can stop in at his place for a drink on the course, since right behind his back yard is the 17th tee.  I'm gonna have to visit him a lot.  ;D

Whoops. ;D

Driving out of town to check on some vegetable fields, I went down a street I don't usually go.  I was on it to hit a couple of places while checking for some more McFarlane sportspicks.  That was a complete bust, but I saw a sign on one of our golf shops that said 50% off.   :o  Yeah, right I thought ::) but what the heck.

Go in, look around see a few things I want.  Ask one of the guys working there if it's really everything.  He says yes.  I ask again.  He says yes.  Still not believing him I ask one more time and he slaps me.  Fair enough.

I snagged a Cobra SS 5 wood, a nifty sweatshirt and a Titleist Vokey Oil Can gap wedge for the nifty sum of $250 or basically what the 5 wood would have cost me by itself.  Now THAT is called a good toy hunt ;D

I've recently been getting into golf, as my girlfriend's father has been taking me out to a course that he's a member at.  He actually gave me a cheap starter set of clubs for Christmas a few months ago since I said I'd like to pick up the game.  I've been hitting the driving range, and my swing's finally coming around.

It's nice to get out there and play a round, but at the same time it's a little stressful since I'm trying to impress my future father in law.  I still haven't gotten out with any of my friends yet, but I'd imagine that to be a little more relaxing throwing back a few beers and hacking away.  I bet I play a little better when I don't feel the pressure so much.

So how seriously do you JD golfers take the sport?  Do you really get into and get pissed when you play poorly, or are you just out there to relax and have a good time?

On a related note, what's up with Tiger lately.  He seems to have fallen off the face of the earth, or at least off the face of the top 5 leaderboard.  For some reason, it hasn't been as fun watching golf on the tube when Tiger's not in the hunt.

Tiger's thought process on the green:  ok, 25 footer for birdie (damn, she looked good last night) and I take home 3/4 of a mill (what was with those shoes).  Just relax and think in the hole (smiles to himself at irony)

Putt goes to low side of hole, three feet away.  Look, he's still smiling.

No big deal, he'll come around.  Part of what he's doing is growing up and that's bound to mess with your mind.  It just turns out he's human after all.  I'd be more concerned with Mike Weir.  Canadain and left handed swing?  That's bound to screw up the game ;D

To answer your other question though, pretty seriously.  Taking the game that is.  I tend to be fairly competitive and the guys I normally golf with are members at private clubs.  I am not.  As such, they golf a fair bit more than I do but I hate outright losing to them.

I play quite a bit regardless, though less than 20 rounds of 18 for each of the last two years.  I have very nice clubs and play pretty well (handicap is around 14-15), not great by any stretch of the imagination, but I never improve my lie and we only allow one mulligan per 18 and only on drives.

But.... we have fun.  We drink beer, rib each other constantly, so it's all good.  Golf by its very nature is frustrating.

I keep watching that putt and think about the times I play golf for fun mind you and shank drives or miss 5 footers, here's Phil with a Major on the line, his first Major win and the Green Jacket to boot and he rolls it in...I have so much respect for pro golfers its not even funny.  What's great is that like bowling anyone can play and on a given day go out and actually have a chance at playing just as good as some of those pros do...

Glad to see Phil finally get that monkey off his back.  I was hoping Els didn't win, something about him bugs me.  I'll agree with Scott, definitely one of the greatest final rounds I've seen.  I almost thought the birdie putt to win wasn't going in and extra holes were coming.  I've been jonesing to play a round, yesterday just makes for more jonesing.

And a side note:  Phil's wife is a MILF ;)

Definite bias here, but I thought Weir's win was more exciting last year.  I completely agree the final round overall was much more exciting, but I give a slight nod to Weir's win.

ANyone ever gotten a Hole In One?  I came close once...

It was a fairly cool September day and there was a slight mist on the course.  Being young, and fresh out of college with some ching in my pocket I had recently taken up the sport again after dabbling as a youth.  Playing 2-3 times a week I was getting pretty average and was excited to step up to the tee box on Hole #2 after getting a Birdie on #1.  It was a 150 yard Par 3 and I pulled my 7 Iron I believe.  I hit the shot and immediately knew it was perfect...perfect swing, felt great, was heading right for the pin.  The greens being a little wet accepted my ball with a slight thud about 6" above the cup, it slowly rolled backwards and stopped an inch past the pin missing the cup by less than 1/2" when we went and looked where it rolled (you could see the path do to the moisture on the green)

I haven't come closer than that and would have went balistic if I had actually sunk it...still waiting

ANyone ever gotten a Hole In One?  I came close once...

Well, not me, but today I went golfing with a buddy.  Par 3, 197 yards.  I put my 5-wood over the back of the green.  He tees it up, 3 iron.  Decent shot, played his slice well.  Bounces once in front of the green, once on the green then rolls toward the pin.  He turns away, happy with his shot.  I'm still watching.  The ball disappears.  The frigging ball frigging disappears :o

We're walking up to the hole, he's totally relaxed, I'm flipping out.  Walk up, look down.  Yup.  Hole in one.  Farging bastage.

Post by: Scott on August 9, 2004, 12:21 PM
That sucks that he missed seeing it too, I would go absolutely ape crap if I hit one.  My buddy got one and didn't see it either, it was around a 200 yard hole and he hit his 5 wood, bent down to pick up his tee and walked toward the hole, looked around couldn't find his ball anywhere, looked and looked and looked and finally the guy he was with asked him if he checked the cup.  There it was, farging bastage

Anyone want to play some Fantasy Golf?

I sort of do

You basically assemble teams of 4 starting Golfers based on 8 Golfers you pick

Golfers are broken into Groups of A, B and C golfers and you start 1 A (of 2) 2 B's (of 4) and 1 C (of 2), Maximum of 10 Starts per Golfer for the year

I'm not really sure why you need 8 Golfers if you can change your roster to whatever you want after each tournament

I'd be game if you wanted to start up league. I follow golf enough to have a pretty good idea on who else is good past the obvious 2 of Vijay and Tiger.

Does this league last the entire year?
Title: Re: Golf

Title: Re: Golf
Post by: chuckles on January 7, 2005, 01:33 PM
Im guessing with a 10 start max for players, you'll need all those roster spots. I'm hoping they limit each of your 8 roster spots to those 10 starts regardless of the player occupying it, otherwise what prevents you from constantly dropping and adding players and fielding 4 golfers every single weekend their is a tournement?  That would kind of defeat the 10 start max with the exception of a few handful of golfers that you would want to keep the whole year.

Title: Re: Golf
Post by: Scott on January 7, 2005, 01:40 PM
Ah...

You can change your teams as the tournament goes on during the weekend but only for the other A or B or C players.  Once the tourny is over you can then change your squad of 8
Title: Re: Golf
Post by: chuckles on January 7, 2005, 01:44 PM
So basically your starting 4 could differ from round 1 of a tourney to round 4? And then after that you're free to drop and pick up players during the week and then reset a squad of 8 before the next tourney? Interesting way of doing it I guess. Keeps you leaderboard watching thruout the entire tournament this way.
Title: Re: Golf
Post by: Scott on January 7, 2005, 01:46 PM
Correct

I'll start the league, if there's only 3 of us and nobody switches their rosters no big whoop.  Just a way to pass more time between now and Baseball (aka Get My Revenge on Dressel)
Title: Re: Golf
Post by: chuckles on January 7, 2005, 01:52 PM
So is there like a draft for this, or is every player available to all of us? I don't see it mention anything about a draft, but it seems it might be more fun if there were. Not quite as interesting and competive if we all have Tiger, Vijay, Michelson and a few of the other top ranked players on our teams, even if we're unable to start them week in and week out the entire year.
Title: Re: Golf
Post by: Morgbug on January 7, 2005, 01:54 PM
The draft should go quick then.

At one point, golf drafts excluded Tiger, but I don't think there's any need for that at the moment.  Vijay is dominating, but it's still pretty open and he won't play every tournament.
Title: Re: Golf
Post by: Scott on January 7, 2005, 01:56 PM
No draft, I guess the strategy is that you can only have a guy for 10 tournaments (approx 40) so you need to play them when they are hot and fit the course right I'd guess
Title: Re: Golf
Post by: chuckles on January 7, 2005, 01:56 PM
Yep, and I think the 10 start max will limit how dominating you can be with your roster. By not being able to plug in those players every single week they play, you'll have to be more creative on who you draft and who you start, which should make it more fun.

Man, what a great Masters this weekend!  The final round is one of my personal favorite TV moments.  I don't usually have enough time to watch anything beyond that but it was a another great one

Tiger's shot on 16 where the ball dropped after hanging on the lip of the cup was one in a million. Great sports moment and he truly is the man and I admire the hell out of that guy.  I usually root for the underdog but not in his case, I love watching him compete :)
Title: Re: Golf

Tiger is the best.  He lives for the competition.  I knew he would win after that shot.  DiMarco is still the bridesmaid.  He'll probably win a major eventually.  If Mickelson can, he can, too.
I never hit an ace, but I came close once.  I was playing at Maple Hills before it was turned into a townhome park  :-[
And I was hitting on hole 6 or 7, the one that was at the top of the hill where you hit out of the trees.  This was before they bulldozed that hill and changed the course.  I hit the ball straight at the stick and it hit the stick, dropped down and nearly bounced into the cup.  It rolled a few feet away and I was able to putt it in from there.
Any fellow Minnesotans know what the heck happened to Country View in Maplewood?  I drove by there recently for the first time in a while and noticed it was closed up.  I can't believe they weren't making money.  That place was always packed.  One less par 3 in the area..... >:(

On the north side of the course they are putting in a new County Road D.  The dig on the west side of 61 is all for that as well.  The course is being put up for serious bucks, rumor has it Lowe's is the front runner for the property.  I'm actually hoping for Wal-Mart, a new large model instead of the piece of crap in Vadnais.

You should have seen the grass at Country View last summer!  I thought of the fact that if the world population was wiped from the earth this is how the grass would look, with all of the fertilizing and stuff people do.  It was pretty neat actually.

Actually, Tiger has practically become the underdog over the last couple years, so I think a lot of folks were rooting for him in this case, just to re-ascend to the top of the golfing world once again, so that all will be back to "normal".  With him playing subpar the last few years, I think it's kind of hurt the sport, since folks loved to watch him at the top of his game, and loved to root for the underdogs to get a crack at him.  Now that he's back on the top, at least for now, it seems to set everything right in the golf world again.  Just like with Jordan, or any other top athlete/team.  You want them to be at their best, so when any others beat them, the excitement is just that much more.  So I think a lot of people were thrilled with Tiger's victory yesterday.  If he wins another major or two this year, then folks can really start chearing for the underdogs to whip him again...

As for that shot on the 16th, definitely one for the ages, and possibly the most dramatic shot of all time, hanging on the lip for several seconds, with so much at stake.  Just like that Kentucky shot in the Elite 8 that bounce around the rim for several seconds as time expired, this was one of those types of sports moments you usually only see fabricated in the movies.  Just incredible to see something like this happen in real life.  What a shot.

After the conclusion there, we pulled out a few irons, and went and hit some balls around our neighborhood golf course.  Fun, but frustrating, after watching the pros make it look so damned easy...  :-\

I guess that land is far too valuable to have a golf course on it  only used for five or six months out of the year.  That's too bad.  I was not happy with the loss of Maple Hills and now they took away Country View also.  Oh well, it's not like I went there last year.  That's what getting married will do to you, though.  This summer my wife will have our first little guy, so I'll have even less time and money for golfing, but I'll be fine with that.

True that, I used to go golfing like 6-10 times a summer, as much was possible with work schedule and all, but after little guy #1 and now little guy #2, Golf has taken a back seat for a while.  Sort of like fishing and hunting as well, its just a temporary sort of vacation until they get a little bit bigger and we can go together (as my wife keeps pointing out)

Good week to use Jim Furyk for the first time :P

Heh.  Yeah, what'd he do, miss 3 foot putts on both the 16th and 17th, to fall into a tie and ultimately lose in sudden death, after Harrington's 70 foot birdie putt?  Damn.

And how 'bout Birdie Kim holing it out of the bunker on the 18th to win the Women's U.S. Open?  That was pretty crazy.  Bummer Michelle Wie tanked on Sunday, as I enjoy watching her.  A lot.  Anika shot (way) over par for the first time in 4 years too...

Oh, sorry, were you guys talking about Fantasy Golf?  Eh.  **Yawn**

I'll actaully be golfing for the first time and probably last time this summer on July 20.  My workplace is having a department bonding session that day.  We do one every quarter.  The summer field trip has been to a golf course for the last few years.  We also go bowling, go curling at the St Paul Curling Club and have been to Twins games.  I'll have to head out to a practice range a few times before I go.

Playing the 15th and -1 for the day, sitting at 4 over for the Tourney, and currently one stroke above the cut...  Yikes!  Gonna be close...

Looks like Lefty's got his groove on though.
Title: Re: Golf
Post by: JediMAC on August 12, 2005, 06:51 PM
Tiger made the cut.  Barely.  By one stroke.  But the PGA higher ups and the TV execs are breathing a big sigh of relief.  Now, the question is how much of the 12 stroke difference can he make up...

Wonder if Fatty Phil will choke again, or manage to stay the course and win his second major.  I guess it would be nice to see him get another, just to get the monkey off his back entirely.

Anybody else watching the PGA Championship?
Title: Re: Golf
Post by: Morgbug on August 12, 2005, 09:13 PM
I'm following it.  Phil's not supposed to be in the running for this thing, so it'd be nice if he stuck it to them.  But Vijay's sitting in third right now.  That's scary.

I didn't see it, but it darn well better have been on.  They apparently could have finished it last night, but didn't because of a conflict with the broadcast schedule.  It was played today specifically so it could be on TV.

Glad Phil won.  All the chatter will be a little hollow now.  Always nice to see a lefty win :P

Title: Re: Golf
Post by: Rob on February 8, 2006, 12:09 PM
So how's it work, everyone gets to pick anyone from the tournament each time and the idea is to just guess who's going to do the best at a given event?
Title: Re: Golf
Post by: Morgbug on February 8, 2006, 02:29 PM
When you get in there and look (if you haven't already) you'll see players are grouped into three categories: A, B, C.

You pick two from A, four from B and two from C for each tournament.

Once you select those four guys you are stuck with them for that tournament (but can change them up the following week).

You play one from A, two from B and one from C for each round.

You can only use a player 10 times throughout the season so you have to choose wisely because you cannot simply pick Mickelson, Woods, Singh and other top performers for every week.  It's like hockey in that sense, once the magic number of games is used up, they're not even in existence for you anymore.

Beware whether or not guys are actually playing.  If you pick players on Sunday prior to the tournament you may find they aren't even in the tournament.  Best to check on Wednesday night to make sure your guys are eligible.  I've had guys drop out for odd reasons last year at the last minute too - illness, family problems, drug problems :-X

LMK if you have other questions.  max_one get in there too please, the more the merrier.

Post by: Morgbug on February 20, 2006, 09:34 PM
Heh, I did the same thing last year as well, before I realized I could even do it.  At the point where I realized it I was ranked something like 69174 ::)  I did manage to work my way up about 30000 places, but it still wasn't impressive for the finish.

Even more interesting last year was watching guys near the top at the start of the year burn through Woods/Mickelson/Singh.  They dropped pretty darn fast after they used up their 10 turns each.  It's weeks like the one coming up that make a difference.  Though last week burned a lot of guys too, as the A pool didn't perform well.

Title: Re: Golf

I wouldn't, were I you.  It's not even half way through and there's a limit to the number of times you can use a guy.  I've already used Mickeleson five times and may use him again this week, so I'll be SOL with him before long.  It's a long season, to say the least.

I kept forgetting to set my line-up, my team sucked, too busy on the weekends to reset my line-up after guys failed to make the cut, etc etc etc etc.

I was thinking about it as well since I forgot to update my team for about the last 3 weeks (what with the trip and all) - but now that you're gone, and Masshole's team hasn't been updated in forever, it looks like all I have to do is ride it out for an easy Bronze for the trophy case.

Yep, I'm in the same boat as Jeff.  Forgot, didn't update after cuts, blah, blah, etc.  I'll probably just let it go and not bother and see how many points I get at the end by doing nothing.
Title: Re: Golf
Post by: Morgbug on June 7, 2006, 09:50 PM
Well you're going to run out of starts for the guys you have slotted in, so you'll have to change them at least once if you want to ride it out.

I've had a miserable couple of weeks; first not paying attention and having guys miss the cut and me not change them out; second the rain delays caused me to have the same thing happen again.  Yeesh.

Title: Re: Golf
Post by: Morgbug on November 5, 2006, 07:14 PM
I'm not sure about that.  I had Furyk in during the week, so I'll get the bonus points for finishing second as well.  You only have to have them in for a round to get those points.  You need to get 20 points out of Furyk and me get zero from Vijay, which could happen, but I think I'm going to win by 4 points.

Hard to believe Vijay tanked like that.  Last night he had a real shot at finishing second.

Title: Re: Golf
Post by: Scott on November 6, 2006, 09:39 AM
Yeah you got me, I really had no idea you got bonus points for having as guy active during the week as I had never had that happen for me this year.  I've had horrible fantasy luck this year across the board, losing the baseball crown on the last day, the golf by 5 points, Alexander hurt, dropping Vanek, etc etc etc :-\
Title: Re: Golf
Post by: Morgbug on November 6, 2006, 10:55 AM
Huh.

I won the baseball crown.

I won the golf.

I picked up Vanek.

Maybe I should send you the chips as a thank you.

For the golf and the bonus points, it's the big reason I moved Vijay in and took Furyk out.  I was hedging my bet to get the bonus points.  I knew that having had Furyk in my lineup already I'd get his bonus points.  I did expect more out of Vijay, but he did not have a good year at all really (for him) so that wasn't a smart play really.  I also slipped Donald out for the last day as well to get potential bonus points from Els, but he went the wrong way too ???  Tinkering too much can be a very bad thing, I nearly blew it.

Love III nearly blew the damn thing for me though, who the hell goes +12 in the first round of the last major of the year?
