What paints work the best.


I have tried the testoers model paint and it didn't work that well. It was all I had laying around.

Repainting the figs for now. Maybe some on the ships.

I use Citadel Water Based Acrylics, they have a wide range of colors.  Some Comic/Gaming shops carry them, if there is a Wizards of the Coast store in GB check there or shops that have gaming mini figures or models.  The awesome thing is since they are water based no need for brush cleaners and the like

For sure you need to use Acrylic paints though, it also doesn't hurt to then spray them with a coat of Testors Dull Coat to seal the paint and remove some shine

Some of the Vac Metal figs like 3PO and some R2 units it takes a little bit to get acrylics to adhere so spraying with Dull Coat first is the way to go...

 We don't have to much in the way of gaming places up here but I will check out the local hobby shops to see what they carry.

 Do any of you guys use an airbrush??? or do you just brush it on.

There are many different paints on the market. When I use to build plastic model kit's I used Humbrol, Tamiya, Testors & Gunze Sangyo.
I liked using Humbrol & Tamiya paints.
Another one is Modelflex paint. Great for air brushing.

As for doing figures, I do not make customs & I have not repaired any figures so I have no idea what would be good.
I'm sure the other members will help out.  ;)

There is a cheaper & just as effective method - Craft Acryllic paints like apple Barrel.  They are available at craft stores and WalMart.  Like the model paints, you will need to seal it with a dull coat.

I'll be posting an article on painting basics over on thejawa in the next couple of weeks.  When it goes up I'll post here to let you now.

Are the Apple Barrel stuff water based???  If so that may be the way to go...you can find them at Wal Mart in the Craft section if you can't locate Citadel paints.  The nice thing again about Citadel is their color pallate (very earthy...great for SW figs) and the water based=no solvent cleaners for your brushes

Seems to me that I remember Apple Barrel paints from when my mom used to do crafts. I will give them a shot and see what others I can find.

Yep Water based, cheap and available in more colors than you'll ever want to buy.  Tho' somehow that collecting gene kicks in and you must Collect Them All!

I just completed my first Custom figure, and Apple Barrel is what I used. I hand and Air brushed it. And I liked the paint !!! I did have to thin it a little for the Air Brush !!!!(http://www.stopstart.freeserve.co.uk/smilie/colours.gif)It's $.44 for a 2oz. bottle at W-M..

Thanks guys for all the input.

Ipicked up the Apple Barrel paints and they work pretty good plus they have a lot of earth tones that fit right in with the SW universe.  

First thing I am doing is an Endor Han. I made a back pack out of sculpy and filled in his vest now his camo paint. similar to the vintage treanch coat but done with the entire vest, pants a little differnt similar to the vintage endor trooper.

I agree with most of the replies as well.  Find an acrylic paint line that fits your needs the best.  I have used Apple Barrel, Tamaiya (expensive) & testors work really well.

I use liquitex acrylics.The apple barrel types work good for metallics and finish in one coat.The others may take more.
