The Prequel Trilogy / Photo Request: Obi-Wan's Utapau Starfighter
« on: August 2, 2005, 09:21 PM »
Well, since Hasbro is for some reason packing in the label sheet of the mass market Anakin JSF in with the TRU Blue Obi-Wan JSF, I am curious as to which exterior stickers I can affix to the blue one and which ones are not necessary/appropriate.  I've pretty much ruled out the "tally marks" on the sides of the cockpit wall shield above the wings, but I didn't know if the "Open Circle" insignias and the Republic/Jedi symbol were still on it too.

Unfortunately, the only images from the film that I can find online are from the "far off" view of the MagnaGuard as Obi-Wan lands on Utapau.  I recall there being a few good shots of Obi-Wan exiting the ship and walking off the wing when he lands, as well as a good shot of him in the cockpit talking to R4-G9 before he pulls the bait and switch on the Separatists, but none of those stills have surfaced online.

So, I throw myself onto the mercy of the JD image folks in the hopes that someone might have some photos of the blue JSF that I can use as a guide on how to apply the stickers to the fourth Jedi Starfighter I have purchased this year.  Thanks in advance! :)

Only had two items left, so I'll consolidate them into my wants thread to save room.  Thanks to everyone who replied. :)

The Prequel Trilogy / Whose Side Are You On Anyway?
« on: June 29, 2005, 08:35 PM »
Okay, something has been really bugging me the more I think about it, and it has nothing to do with the Hopalong R2 in the Jedi Starfighter socket that I mentioned in another thread.  It has to do with alliegances amongst the Republic and the Separatists, but with one planet in particular: Mon Calamari.

Now, I tend to hate the Expanded Universe.  No, I LOATHE the great majority of it.  If I could, I'd fire Kevin Anderson into the sun and not lose a bit of sleep over it.  But I'm going to use one EU source I actually liked (the CW cartoon) to support my point here.  But enough rambling; here's my question:

Whose side are the Quarren on in the war?

In Episode II, when Dooku's giving his speech to the engines of commerce on Geonosis, the Senator representing the Quarrens on Mon Calamari (Tikkes?) is sitting there at the table.  Ten minutes later, during Jar Jar's Greatest Folly, there is a contingent of Quarren in the Senate applauding Palpatine and his new emergency powers.

In the CW cartoon, we see what we've all heard about for years (the Quarren and Mon Cals at war, with the Quarren siding with the Separatists in the Clone Wars).  Then, ROTS rolls around and when Palpatine, Anakin, and Obi-Wan arrive at the Senate after their "landing", amongst the throng of Senators waiting to meet them is another Quarren.  And naturally, when Vader kills the Separatists, there is a Quarren right there in the pile of dead bodies.

So, as the subject line implies, does anybody know what is going on with the Quarren?  Is there some remote Quarren faction on Shitopia that remains loyal to the Republic when the ones on Mon Calamari align with the Separatists?  Does Dooku have photos of Tikkes molesting Naboo shaaks that he is using as blackmail to keep him in the Separatist fold?

And yes, I have far too much time on my hands, but I'm wondering if there is an official reason for the Quarren and their random loyalty in the GFFA.

34
I wanted to make a much more inflammatory subject line, but I figured I would hold back.  ;D

Anyway, while I was at the local retailers earlier this morning, it occurred to me that the people Hasbro is so adamant about claiming to be their bread and butter, the children, are going to more than likely be sorely disappointed if (for some bizarre reason) they want some action figures this weekend other than the usual suspects.  I mean, yes, there are gobs of Obi-Wans and Anakins so they can reenact that duel, and they can still get most of the main characters that they remember (Threepio, R2, Chewbacca, Yoda), but when it comes to exciting secondary characters and/or main bad guys, they're literally going to be SOL.

At every store I went to, I saw the same figures staring back at me in abundance.  In Collection 1, there was an ample supply of Obi-Wan (1 and 27), Anakin (2 and 28), Yoda (3 and 26), the SBD, Chewbacca, R2-D2, Grievous' Bodyguard, Mace Windu, Tarfful, Clone Pilots, and Palpatine (35).

In Collection 2, there was an abundance of 13-24 (minus any Royal Guards with a massive amount of Mon Mothmas and Bail Organas), and 29-32, with a few Mas Ameddas and VMDs here and there amongst them.

So, out of those figures that I saw in abundance, these were the ones that (believe it or not) were almost totally missing (they may have been 1 or 2 at one store, but none at others), and once you see them, you'll see my complaint.

-#6 Clone Trooper (there were none of these anywhere)
-#9 Grievous (this one surprised me because there were so many about three weeks ago and they just dried up)
-#11 Vader (again, none anywhere)
-#12 Palpatine (ditto)
-#23 Royal Guard (either version)
-#33 Clone Commander (I saw a few at one store)
-#36 Grievous (surprisingly, since it sucks)
-#38 AT-TE Gunner (no surprise)
-#39 Polis Massan (exception to the rule)

I'm not even factoring in the complete absence of the #41 Clone which is starting to piss me off, personally, but this post isn't about me.

So, a kid goes and sees ROTS at some point after Thursday and decides that he wants to go get some figures.  Mom says he can have some and he wants Vader.  Sorry kid, you're out of luck.  They have Yoda with a lightsaber but no Emperor with one (35 doesn't count since he's not cloaked), so again, sorry kid, Yoda's fighting air.  Clone Army?  Don't make me laugh!  Didn't you hear that they're Ebay Exclusives?  The main bad guy?  Well, you've only got 10 bucks to spend, so you could buy that one with the cup or that one with the grappling hook, but then you can't afford to buy another figure to fight him.

But hey, you can reenact all the political wrangling you want, or the arguments (which all sarcasm aside, are still one of my favorite character quirks in the films) between Threepio and Artoo can be endlessly rerun in your living room.  Oh, you found some Clone Pilots and Mom said she would get you an ARC-170 or Gunship for your birthday?  Oops, too bad!  You can't find those at retail either!

Okay, all joking will cease at this point and I'm going to try to maintain an air of professionalism.  Hasbro's case assortments for this movie are horrible.  They have done a poor job of gauging demand for figures and staying up to date on what is selling and what isn't.  They are shipping too many of figures that have a limited appeal and too few of figures that a lot of people want.  Bail Organa is an incredibly cool figure, and I think a lot of people are missing out by not having him, but I don't see a reason to ship him after the first case assortment of Collection 2.

Hasbro's defense, over the years, refers to the fact that the case assortments are made months in advance and can't be changed at the drop of a hat.  Well, the case assortments coming later this year are going to be including figures (like the first and second Obi-Wans, Anakins, and Yodas) that are in a massive glut at retail already, so you would think that 6 months is enough lead time to correct this.

In 1999, Hasbro released a solid case of Darth Maul to try and decrease the hysteria surrounding that figure.  The figure eventually pegwarmed because of this, but it was a single character.  Hasbro could very easily crank out a case assortment of 12 Clones (#41 preferably) or a case assortment with 4 of those and 4 #6 Clones and 4 Commanders, but they won't, because doing so would be admitting that their ratios are horrible.

Back in the POTJ days, Hasbro seemed to have things figured out.  The case assortments seemed to be done closer to release, and very few cases had older figures reshipped.  If there was demand for a figure, it went back out there, but for the most part, the reshipped figures were ones that would sell (like Vader or Scout Troopers) instead of ones that wouldn't sell (Boss Nass, Porkins, or Aurra Sing).  Then, with AOTC, they went right back to what almost killed the line in 1998 when everyone was selling figures for 2 dollars.

Now they're doing it again, and even their own website can't keep up with demand.  I keep hoping that they will notice the lack of sales on some figures versus others, but if that happens, I'll eat my shoe.  Hasbro is like that annoying guy at the bookstore who will not admit they are wrong because it would make them appear (or so they believe) weak.  I was taught that when you make a mistake, you try to correct it, you admit when you're wrong, as humility is a virtue.  It is not weakness; they only people they are hurting in the long run are themselves.

So, when you see a kid in the aisles this weekend who can't find Darth Vader because Hasbro didn't ship enough, or who wants a Clone Trooper to shoot his Jedi in the back (damn that's morbid) but can't find it because of the combined efforts of Hasbro and Ebay, just look at him and tell him, "Well, kid, it sucks to be you, doesn't it?"  That's what Hasbro seems to be telling them anyway.

I just wanted to post a big "thank you" to everyone from the JD staff at Indy for the excellent photo coverage.  Every other site (for the most part) that has been photographing the toys has been doing a lackluster job, obscuring details, poor lighting, and strange angles, but not JD.  You guys are doing a bang-up job that is putting all the other sites to shame!  So a big thumbs up to you guys (even though you really shouldn't see this until Monday or so at the earliest; it's a Con for god's sake!) for taking the best photographs of any SW toy site on the web!  :)

Other Collectibles / M & M's Collectibles
« on: March 25, 2005, 04:11 PM »
While bending over and buying gas earlier today, I noticed that the station had put up a M&M "tower" with ROTS artwork on it.  It was a cardboard thing about five feet tall, with Anakin on one side and Vader at the top on the front.  There were little "bowls" that jutted out in front of the box slots that held the differently packaged M&Ms.  I saw packages with M's dressed up as the droids, an M dressed up as Anakin in front of the moisture farm, but the number for my food order was called, so I didn't get a chance to look much closer.

What I did see is that they had several packages of the "Dark Side" chocolate M&Ms directly under Vader near the top of the tower.  I almost bought one, but then I remembered that I hate dark chocolate.  Also, there was no mention of the stuffed M-Peror (the one food tie-in that I really want) or M-Luke, or else I would have bought one to get the coupon for them.

So, if this is any indication, the food stuff is coming sooner than thought in unusual locations.

The Prequel Trilogy / A Truly Grievous Prank
« on: March 10, 2005, 07:37 PM »
I was going to put this in the "Creating General Grievous" thread, but this is such genius that I had to give it its own.  If it does need to be moved, mods, please feel free to do so.  This has made me laugh for nearly the last twenty minutes since I ran across the link and it's brilliant.  This is easily the greatest prank that has ever been played on certain individuals who break their legs putting their pants on and our "good buddy" PW's "other" site (TFN) was the first to basically propogate the rumor to a point where it was fast becoming fact.

Now, let me preface this by saying that I fell for it hook, line, and sinker, but I have a very small ego, and all I can say about this in regards to the "perps" is: WELL PLAYED, GENTLEMEN.  ;D

So, ladies and gentlemen of JD.com, I give you the greatest use of INTERNET to incite hilarity...

Saga Collection '06 / Much Needed Resculpts
« on: January 16, 2005, 10:27 AM »
Reading the thread on Post-ROTS repacks got me thinking about many of the figures that have come out over the years that are either outdated, sculpt-wise, now or that could use some retooling to make a better figure.  So, in my anal retentive way of doing things (and since it's Sunday morning and I need to get my mind off of financial woes for 20 minutes at least), I went through the list of POTF2/TPM/POTJ/Saga figures and looked at what figures I thought could really use a resculpt, maybe for some kind of "farewell" line of figures in a year or so.  I also have an idea for a subline at the bottom of the list that hits on some other people that may seem left out in the initial list.  I'm very interested to hear anyone else's thoughts on these:

EPISODE I: THE PHANTOM MENACE

-OOM-9 (they could just release the Trophy Edition sculpt and include a mini-Nute and Rune hologram)
-C-3P0 (as much as I love the Episode I figure, an updated version with a lot of attention paid to the paint would rule)
-Pit Droids (release the overseas exclusive pack-ins as a Clone Trooper-esque variant thing; 2 per pack with different colors and accessories)

EPISODE II: ATTACK OF THE CLONES

-Anakin Skywalker in Peasant Disguise (no action features, please)
-Obi-Wan Kenobi (in full Jedi robes with great articulation)
-Padme Droid Factory Chase (with new head and "unaction" cape)
-C-3P0 (metallic, thank you very much)
-Taun We (in scale)
-Jar Jar Binks (non action pose)
-San Hill (yes, he's obscure, but the three pack version sucked)
-the Drugged Out Kaminoan (those of you who have watched the "Puppets to Pixels" doc on the AOTC DVD know of whom I speak; dare I say the "Ice Cream Maker Guy" of the PT?) ;D

EPISODE IV: A NEW HOPE

-Owen Lars (now, please)
-R5-D4 (again, now, please)
-Rebel Fleet Trooper (okay, I have no problem with the POTJ version, and this is just thrown in as a shout-out to Jesse)
-Han Stormtrooper (VOTC body with AT-ST Han head and a new helmet)
-Luke Stormtrooper (VOTC body with new head and helmet)
-Grand Moff Tarkin
-Death Star Trooper
-Ceremonial Luke Skywalker
-Wedge Antilles (Gold Leader body with mods and a new head and helmet)
-Biggs Darklighter (GL body with mods and a new head and helmet)
-Red Leader (GL body with mods and a new head and helmet)
-While we're at it, let's make a series of Rebel Pilots in X-Wing gear with switchable heads and helmets)

EPISODE V: THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK

-Princess Leia in Hoth Gear
-Hoth Rebel Soldier (mega articulation please)
-General Veers (with removable helmet and armor)
-Captain/Admiral Piett
-4-LOM
-Zuckuss (at the very least they could "seal" his cloak)
-Ugnaughts
-Bespin Security (white box army builder with different heads and hands)
-Han Solo in Carbonite (go all out on this one)

EPISODE VI: RETURN OF THE JEDI

-Darth Vader with Removable Helmet
-Ishi Tib (Jabba's Palace)
-EV-9D9
-Gammorrean Guard
-Bib Fortuna
-Sy Snootles (vintage with feathers please)
-Leia in Boussh Disguise
-Chewbacca as Boussh's Bounty (VOTC with chain would work)
-Weequay Skiff Guard
-Emperor Palpatine
-Admiral Ackbar
-Mon Mothma
-Endor Han Solo (soft goods coat)
-Endor Princess Leia (soft goods cloak and removable helmet)
-Endor Luke Skywalker (soft goods cloak and removable helmet)
-Wicket the Ewok
-Logray the Ewok
-Paploo the Ewok
-Biker Scout (mega articulated with a speeder bike)
-Spirit of Anakin Skywalker (with Hayden's head)
-Spirit of Yoda (pack-in with Anakin?)

Also, with the general success of the VOTC line, I figured it might be cool to have a "Prequel Wrap-Up" version of the line with unique characters from the Prequel trilogy.  Each of these would be "ultimate" versions of the characters done on vintage styled cards in the clamshells like the VOTC:

EPISODE I: THE PHANTOM MENACE

1.  Battle Droid (super articulation)
2.  Darth Maul (cloth cloak, splitting lightsaber, super articulation)
3.  Jar Jar Binks (super articulation)
4.  Qui-Gon Jinn (cloth cloak, super articulation)

EPISODE II: ATTACK OF THE CLONES

1.  Jango Fett (removable helmet, switchable backpacks, and super articulation)
2.  Mace Windu (cloth cloak and super articulation)
3.  Count Dooku (cloth cape and super articulation)
4.  Padme Amidala (white outfit with super articulation)

EPISODE III: REVENGE OF THE SITH

1.  General Grievous (cloth cape and super articulation)
2.  Palpatine (cloth cloak and super articulation)
3.  Anakin Skywalker (cloth cloak and super articulation)
4.  ???

Thoughts?  Am I mad?

Modern Classifieds / Anybody want a mint loose Unleashed Leia?
« on: July 28, 2004, 02:30 PM »
UPDATE:  Just wanted to note that the transaction is complete and the Leia is on its way to Talon.  Thanks to everyone for looking!

I picked an Unleashed Leia up on a whim a month or so ago, and after opening it and displaying it on my desk, I found myself asking why I bought it in the first place.  It's not that it's a bad figure (it's actually really well sculpted), just that it looks out of place next to the other Unleashed figures on my limited desk space (plus I need to make room for Vader).

So, basically, I was thinking 10 dollars shipped to anywhere in the continental USA.  The figure and all accessories are in absolutely perfect condition (like I said, it went straight from the package onto the desk shelf and has only been moved so I could dust the desk) and I'll pack it all up with as much bubble wrap and cushioning as I can so it won't be damaged.  The shipping cost is for Priority Mail with delivery confirmation.

So, if anybody is interested, just shoot me a PM (email is still acting wonky) and we can go from there.  Thanks for looking! :)

Modern Classifieds / Wanted: An Unleashed Padme, Carded or Loose
« on: June 29, 2004, 09:22 AM »
This is my first classified post here on the boards, so please be kind.  ;)

Anyway, I'm looking for an Unleashed Padme.  I know that these were pretty easy to come by in some areas, but as my area never got anything between the Maul/Jango wave and the Boba/Han/Yoda wave, I never saw this or any of the others she was released alongside.

Card condition is not important as long as the figure and accessories/base are perfect.  I'd even be willing to buy one loose if it met the perfect and complete conditions.  It's going to be opened up and displayed on my desk at work alongside Sidious and Boba Fett, so in the end scheme of things, the bubble/card doesn't matter to me one bit.  I'd like to keep it under 20 bucks shipped though if at all possible.

Anybody willing to help a guy out?  If you can, please PM me (my email is all wonky at the moment) and we'll go from there Thanks! :)

UPDATE: now pending...thanks habs98!

First of all, and I'm sure I'm not alone in this, I love John Williams' musical scores in the SW films, and in the majority of his non-SW work.  Even his low-key scores, such as the one for "A.I.", are absolutely incredible and carry as much emotion as the on-screen action, and any fan of SW (or movie music in general) should have his scores in their CD collection.

I absolutely adore the RCA Victor releases of the Special Edition soundtracks: two discs for each film, in sequential order, with all kinds of bonus tracks, unreleased cues, and unsurpassed liner notes.  Those three double-disc sets are among my most loved SW items in my collection and I listen to them on a regular basis.  Sure, they weren't as complete as they could have been ("Lapti Nek", the Yub Yub song, and the Rebo Band source music from just after the Boussh thermal detonator scene aren't included), but they are an absolute treasure to fans of the films.

That said, I have been less than thrilled with the presentations of TPM and AOTC on CD thus far.  Not only have tracks been slapped together that have little or no relation, not even thematically, some of the most memorable cues from the films have been ignored completely (such as Anakin's breakdown in AOTC with the soaring Sith theme blending into the Imperial March).  I do enjoy the soundtracks a good bit, as there are some incredible pieces of music on there, but compared to the RCA Victor releases of the OT:SE, they come up way short.

(I will say that one thing I love about the AOTC CD is that it does include a lot of music that wasn't in the film, mainly during the Speeder Chase and the Arena Monster Battle.)

Sony tried very poorly to follow up on the OT:SE work with a TPM "Ultimate Edition" that was marketed to make people believe it was along the lines of the SE soundtracks.  When it was released, people quickly realized that it was nothing more than an isolated score, and still featured the choppy editing and abrupt transitions that plagued Williams' score in the film.  People, myself included, were outraged, as Sony had led people to believe it would be one thing, were intentionally vague when asked questions about specifics, and once it was released, tried to cover up by saying "we never said it was all that was recorded, just that it was "every note from the film."  Thank goodness they didn't give AOTC a similar treatment, as the music editing in that film was 10 times as worse as TPM's.

Now, I know the reasons for the score in TPM, particularly during the four-prong final battle, being as choppy as it is due to Lucas reediting the final reel after JW had done the score.  And I know that in AOTC, Williams didn't even score a lot of the Clone War because he knew it was not finished and his work would probably wind up like TPM's.  But what I don't get, with all the money Lucas has at his disposal, is why Williams isn't given the chance to rescore both TPM and AOTC's endings so the music won't sound like a temp track.  Give him and the LSO some extra money to stay around for a week after the recording session for Episode III (or come in for another session ala Howard Shore for the LOTR:EE DVDs) and let things be set right.

After that, let RCA Victor have the rights to all the soundtracks and let them release two-CD complete scores of all three prequels the right way.  For all Lucas goes on about sound being so important and how much he loves John Williams' work, he has really torn it apart with the prequels and it'd be great to hear things as JW intended them to sound.

Reading in other threads about how people would have liked to have seen the OTC "officially" start in January of this year instead of the fall, and so on, got me to thinking about how I would have done things differently.  So, in my own little fantasy world, where I am a viking, I began to formulate how I would have handled the year of 2004 from a product perspective.  Keep in mind this is just my own opinion and is based on pure fantasy (although many of the products I mention are/have actually being/been released).  I'm curious to hear what others would have done in their own fantasy world.

Also, in this fantasy world, I am happily married to Rachael Leigh Cook, but I digress...

HOW I WOULD HAVE HANDLED THE ORIGINAL TRILOGY COLLECTION:

Basic Figures: there would be nine waves throughout the year, consisting of the following:

JANUARY: HOTH WAVE
-Luke Skywalker in Hoth Gear
-R-3P0
-Hoth Rebel Soldier

FEBRUARY: TATOOINE WAVE
-Luke Skywalker-Jabba's Palace
-R1-G4
-R2-D2-Jabba's Sail Barge

APRIL: JABBA'S PALACE WAVE
-Lando Calrissian-Skiff Guard
-Rappertunie
-Holographic Luke Skywalker
-Tanus Spijek
-J'Quille

MAY: BATTLE OF YAVIN WAVE
-General Dodonna
-Gold Leader
-TIE Fighter Pilot
-Captain Antilles

JULY: STAR DESTROYER WAVE
-Bossk
-Dengar
-Admiral Ozzel

AUGUST: ENDOR WAVE
-Han Solo in Endor Gear (soft goods coat with helmet)
-General Madine
-General Lando Calrissian

SEPTEMBER: DAGOBAH WAVE
-Spirit of Obi-Wan Kenobi
-Dagobah Luke Skywalker
-Yoda
-R2-D2 Dagobah Damage

NOVEMBER: CLOUD CITY WAVE
-Cloud Car Pilot
-Lobot
-Princess Leia in Bespin Gown

DECEMBER: EPISODE III SNEAK PREVIEW WAVE
-General Grevious
-Second Gen Clone Trooper
-Wookiee Warrior

This would give a grand total of 31 regular carded figures, all on the OTC cards with backgrounds (even the EIII figures would have a corresponding background).

VINTAGE STYLE FIGURES: would be released in waves just like they are being this fall, in the months between basic figure waves.  Same assortments:

MARCH: A NEW HOPE
-Luke Skywalker
-Han Solo
-Princess Leia
-Obi-Wan Kenobi

JUNE: THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK
-Darth Vader
-C-3P0
-Lando Calrissian
-Yoda

OCTOBER: RETURN OF THE JEDI
-Boba Fett
-R2-D2
-Stormtrooper
-Chewbacca

DVD SETS:  if they had to do this, the four packs would include the four figures from each VOTC wave in a box (uncarded, for people who weren't all that concerned about the packaging, as nice as it is to look at, or for people who wanted to keep one VOTC in the package but still have a loose one as well).  For the sake of completion:

A NEW HOPE BOX SET: Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Princess Leia, and Obi-Wan Kenobi

THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK BOX SET: Darth Vader, Threepio, Lando Calrissian, and Yoda

RETURN OF THE JEDI BOX SET: Chewbacca, Boba Fett, R2-D2, and Stormtrooper

ULTRA FIGURE ASSORTMENTS:  these would be the same figures already released this year (Rieekan, Threepio, Wampa, Jabba, Denizens, and Ewok) using the same strategy already used.  In addition, a new Han Solo in Carbonite with pack-in Ugnaught would have been released for the Cloud City wave and a new Biker Scout with Speeder Bike would have been released for the Endor wave.  Just my dream you know.

VEHICLES: I don't know about these, but I would have definitely released a new Cloud Car with a head-swapped CC Pilot at some point.

Note: There would be no Hall of Fame series at all released.  There would be no need for them (and there is no need for them) given the presence of the "Ultimate" VOTC series.  Also, the old X-Wing, TIE, and Falcon would not be released as they are now because the sculpts for all three are outdated and pitiful given today's standards.  If they wanted to release something nice, stick with the Red Leader X-Wing at TRU, a TIE with accurate solar panels at WM, and a totally new Falcon from the ground up at another retailer (I can't imagine who would take it on though).

So that's my dream world.  The land of no repacks, no useless resculpts, and no insulting of the consumer intelligence.  Anyone else living in a dream world? :)
