Title: Black Friday Cluster F... It's Coming!
Post by: Jesse James on November 1, 2007, 02:54 AM
Anyone else braving the **** storm that is Black Friday?

I ask this because of the news posted on Rebelscum and on our very own front page that is detailing a Target sale, their exclusive Ultimate Battlepacks, and the contest that gets you into Lucasfilm HQ and your own Hasbro-Made SW figure of yourself.

Pretty flippin' cool to me on the contest, but very unlikely I'd win so it's not a HUGE deal.

I have done the Black Friday toy runs in the past...  Any trek to a Target is a huge pain for me though.  I could probably swing by my gf's Target without too much hastle, but really they're all pretty far off for me, so I'm not too sure I'm gonna make the "big sales" this year.

Anyone really planning to put on their soccer-mom beating gloves and head out into that cruel, cruel world of ****** attitudes and pseudo-deals?

I went out the last two years and will more than likely head out again this year.  I mean come on, beating down a few soccer moms in order to possibly get a figure sculpted after you?!  Bring on the beat down!

I'm pretty sure we'll be heading out this year.  We've gone the past few years, but usually hit only Target and get a fair amount of Christmas shopping done.  It is a huge pain and can be quite stressful, but there are good deals to be had.  Plus, with these battle packs being out, there is more reason to venture out.  I really doubt I'll be able to talk the Mrs. into letting me pick up both of these though, and will probably be lucky to get the Hoth one.  Hopefully these aren't impossible to get.

On a Black Friday side note - we stopped by Wal-Mart later in the morning last year (on the way home from Target) to pick up one of the Star Wars OT DVDs for our nephews (they were $9.72 or something) - and I can't imagine braving that crowd at the peak time.  The store was in absolute shambles (not that its all that neat normally either), but I can only imagine the crowd that was there - yikes.

I hate going out on Black Friday and can almost always avoid it. However, now that Target is practically telling the scalpers to buy up all the BPs all in one shot, I might have to brave it. >:(

Geeze, the whole Target thing in my opinion at least, is about the lamest promotion I've ever seen.  How can something like this really be considered fan friendly?

The idea of the "fan sculpt" is really a cheezy idea I think, unless a girl wins it - we need more female figures in the line.  I'm sure it will just be a head sculpt though, thrown onto the body of a Commtech Stormtrooper.  Lame.  Lucasfilm HQ is fun and all, but they should do something where 10 people get to go there, not just one.

Anyways, I might or might not go to Target that morning.  Not sure yet.  I do want the Hoth set, but this whole gimmick makes me not really want to even get that now.

Hopefully the "one week only" will apply to the contest only and the Battle Packs will still be available after that.

My collecting habits say that I should avoid Black Friday.  I don't need either of these new battle packs.  If they hit clearance, I'd be "forced" to consider them but even then, I should pass.

However, I've almost always gone out on Black Friday to buy something, somewhere.

This year, it may be Michael's (lame huh?) but they've had a 25% off everything in your cart sale and its great for restocking on customizing and diorama making supplies.

Sounds like as good a reason as any to head out that Friday morning to me Brent!   8)

Once again, it is proven that living in MN must rule...  :D

I pretty much go to Target every year on Black Friday.  We usually get there within 30min of opening, and we usually never have any trouble buying what we want.  Maybe it's the fact that there are so many Targets that folks are more spread out or something.  Anyway, I'll be there to buy my ultimate battle packs, my cheap DVDs, and whatever other goodies they use to tempt me.

It makes sense for the contest to only be open to people who bought them during that one week, but not that the items would only be available for 7 days.  I mean, what are they going to do after 7 days if they haven't all sold?

The sky is falling...

No, I have no intentions of battling the crowds on Black Friday.

I haven't bothered in several years.  The last time I went was the year that Toys R Us had the Lego UCS TIE Interceptor for $49.99

That seemed worth it to me.

$5.99 figures or a few dollars of this or that isn't enough to suck me into that mess.

That being said, I will check out the ads - there could always be a non-SW thing that would convince me to go.  I learned that most sale DVD's are available in the later morning / early afternoon though.

Thanksgiving is November 22nd - it's always on a Thursday.  Black Friday is always the next day - so, the 23rd.

I hope this is true, but you never know. Theoretically, they could pull the stock off the shelf and return them to be destroyed. Doesn't make sense, but it happens.

Hmmm... I'm thinking they'll be on shelves until they sell out.  A $50.00 toy that so many people are looking forward to doesn't seem to be something that they would destroy overstock on...

I think the Hoth sets will sell a lot faster than the Endor sets.  I will try and get at least one Hoth set, perhaps two.  Then the Endor set, I doubt I'll get. But we'll see I suppose.  Black Friday... I hate you.

I'd guess that too - I'm buying a Hoth set if I see one, Endor I could care less.

I'm hoping for a really good buy-one-get-one-half-off or a buy-two-get-one-free deal on TAC figures.  I'm itching to further army build some Stormtroopers, DS Troopers, jawas and a couple others.

Of course I am! I think it's always worth the insanity, especially if I can get the Hoth packs and a tiny chance to have a Robo-Quack action figure!  ;D

ditto  :)

I usually pre-plan my morning Target attack so I'm usually in and out within a matter of minutes.  I've never seen mobs of people hoarding anything and it's suprisingly calm for the most part.  I just haven't quite decided what to pick out from the endcap dealy.   :-\

One would hope and think. I'm just speaking in the hypothetical here, but these things probably cost very little to produce so there's probably not much of a loss if Target tries to pull them off the shelf after a week, especially if they sell X amount of units. But you're right, probably won't happen.

I'm not counting on them being pulled...  I would think that, simply, the contest itself is for a limited time or some such, while the toys will be out there...  Perhaps clearanced quickly, but out there.

Found out some interesting things about exclusives too, and Target "holding back".  Apparantly we're in for a lot of exclusives in a short time.  :-\

I would be all over that - I wonder if they'll actually hit clearance though?  Last year I was thinking the Shuttles in my area would, but they never did.  They sold out too fast - and this was with having close to 10 Targets in the area.  I'd say they were all gone by mid December.

As I recall, a couple targets by us let the shuttle hit clearance, but they didn't last more than a few hours on clearance.

Yeah, I remember hearing reports of the shuttle being found for as little as $15.00... I never saw one on clearance though.  I bought two at full price.

Target is open at 6am on Black Friday. I just called three of my local ones and they all said the same thing.

So if you're looking to go, go early. I'll be there before 6am. Wasn't going to do this, this year, but what the hey. I'm only looking for a certain few of the exclusives (Whale ARC,  Whale ARC pilots/troopers pack, and maybe the Hoth Pack.).

Though if it becomes clear that Target is going to have product longer than the "week" long sale, I will prolly hold off on the Hoth set and hope to get it on clearance. I really only want the Turret and have no need for the figs or the AT-ST.

Agreed. I think that piece is what's goig to make or brreak it for that set. Most of us already have all of those figures and the AT-ST. A slight snow deco on the AT-ST isn't enough for most of us to warrant getting the set.  While the blue coated Han is a throwback to the vintage years, that too has been played out long enough that it just doesn't matter to the majority of us (collectors), nor casual fans.

Oh, and please feel free to just call me Sal.

I may be able to get off work early enough to cross the border and drive to Spokane, WA, which has a 2 Targets and 4 Wal-Marts.  I've never experienced Black Friday shopping -- is it really that busy?  Or am I going to curl into the fetal position?
Title: Re: Black Friday Cluster F... It's Coming!
Post by: Jesse James on November 13, 2007, 04:20 AM
Oh, oh, oh...  You have no clue.

Pittsburgh's shopping is pretty spread out as it is.  We're nowhere near as lucky as the guys elsewhere as far as having 30 Targets on their commute and things (Then again, we have far fewer people overall crammed in around here, we have nice **** like trees and shrubs...  And we actually have commutes where we can live outside the city in farmland and still drive into the city ourselves...  So yeah we shouldn't gripe for quality of life for sure).  So the drive alone can annoy you, but when you get there, the people are guaranteed to make you so pissed off you could just punch an elderly person or 3 year old.

I tend to avoid it if I can, but exclusives and good deals do sometimes drive me out there.  I rarely actually do X-Mas shopping though, ironically.  It's usually something for myself when I'm out...  Which makes it easier to NOT go then if I'm just not up to the stress of it.

I can say though, I've seen videos of other cities/places in the states as the doors open on stores having big sales or whatever, and these masses of ******** running each other over as they tear into the store...  I've never witnessed anything like that except Midnight Madness for Star Wars crap...  It's terrible, and all too true for some I guess.  If you can pass being there as the door opens, you're probably less likely to witness that BS.

Having worked black friday in the past the stores by me are insane. Fights are always occurring. I remember people started throwing shopping carts at each other last year at best buy. Always madness.

Target's Wow or Never (http://wow.target.com/) site is now live.

From all the text on the site, it sounds like ONLY the contest runs from Nov 25th - Dec 1st.

The actual items (Ultimate Battle Packs) are available "while supplies last".  So, no worries about only having to buy them during the sale or whatever.

Also, please note that the contest DOES NOT include the Black Friday/Saturday days, but starts on the Sunday after Thansgiving.  That is also when the endcaps are supposed to appear.  So, there is a real chance that these might not even be put out for Black Friday, it will totally depend on when your local store decides to set up the "Wow or Never" endcap.

Anyway, once again it appears that the "black friday hype" was nothing big after all...   ::)

Thanks for the info Jeff.  I think we'll be heading to Target (and probably only Target) on Black Friday for some Christmas shopping anyways, so I'll check and see if these have popped up.  With the Shuttle, they weren't out until the Sunday after last year, so I'll probably head back then and check for the Hoth pack.  I'm just hoping that all of the other Target exclusives (ARC 170 BP, TIE Bomber, GH Jabba Scene, etc.) aren't all put out on Black Friday or something crazy like that.  I'd just as soon have some of those taken care of before, or after that crazy rush.  Like others have said, its going to be an expensive last month plus for this year.

I'm tempted to hit a Target in my area on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and list all the DCPI numbers and see what they have, and maybe pick up an item or two if they'll pull from the stockroom.

The TIE Bomber was found with the DPCI trick in St. Louis on Monday... might get it since it's only $25.00.

We went out on Black Friday as well, but went a little later in the morning.  Popped in at Target to pick up gifts for other family members (and check if any exclusives were out - they weren't), and then made a quick stop at Wal-mart on the way home to check for the Rebo band sets just in case (which also weren't there).  Although Target was packed with people, I have to say that our store (I don't know if it was this way everywhere) was very organized.  We took our time shopping, but the checkout time had to be less than 5 minutes, and not really any worse than a normal day.  They had people "directing traffic" by the checkout lanes though, which helped a lot.

Sort of related to the Black Friday stuff, but I noticed that EE has some nice deals on some Star Wars stuff - like the Dagobah X-Wing for $24.90 and some of the other "exclusives".  I was able to finally pick up one of the Astromech packs from a couple years back (Set 1) for $24.90 as well, now I'll just have to track down Pack 2 eventually - and when I have the extra money.  Just thought I'd pass it along to anyone who is interested, there are a few other SW items on the sale.

It seems Target is business as usual right now. No crowds. It's weird how everyone has to shop on black friday and saturday and then its pretty normal shopping the next week. The same stuff still sits there. I'm seeing more of the Hoth/Endor battle packs being put out now.

I went to a few places on Saturday, didn't find anything of interest except for the ESB wave and a McVader at a WM that hasn't restocked seemingly in forever.
