Star Wars Dioramas and Displays / Re: Death Star custom project
« on: January 21, 2006, 07:12 AM »
I think that with some CUSTOMIZING updates, the vintage Death Star Space Station would go beautifully with the current modern figures!!

I currently own TWO boxed DSSS’s and I’m about to pick up a third.  Here are the customizing updates that I have planned for all three:

1) On the Top Floor, the Laser Cannon, the control chair, and the “explode” lever will all be airbrushed in a realistic “gun-metal” grey with metallic silver weathering highlights.  That cannon was a PERFECT sculpt of the cannon seen in the film (kudos to Kenner!).  Just imagine the seat cushions on the chair painted in semi-gloss black to simulate real vinyl !!!  Yeeaahh!!!!  I will add power hoses around the base of the gun. And I will add custom stickers (depicting the red energy discharges seen through the cannon's circular power chamber)

2) On the First Floor, the Trash Compactor will get a face-lift.  It will be re-painted (inside and out) in a less garish color (probably dingy grey with dirt and rust streak “weathering”).  I’ll get rid of the multi-colored FOAM “garbage” and green Dianoga monster.  They’ll be replaced with the movie-accurate sculpted “garbage” and Dianoga from the SAGA Trash Compactor Movie Scene two-packs.

3) The stickers for this playset need updating too.  The computer terminal panel stickers (for the second floor) and the “Tractor Beam” terminal stickers (for the top elevator shaft) will be made more screen accurate.

4) The 3rd floor “Light-Bridge” that Luke and Leia swing across will be updated a bit.  I plan on using the (screen accurate) bridge platform sections that were included with the POTJ 25th Anniversary “Swing to Freedom” set.  I’ve got several of those just laying around.

5)  Those “slide-in” cardboard backdrops will be spruced up a bit too.  The glossy outer sides look fine to me, so I’ll leave those alone.  But the dull inner sides need some help.  I think they should be more movie accurate,  photo-realistic,  and not so “illustrated”.  For example, on the second floor, the cardboard backdrop depicts a large battle viewscreen that displays an X-Wing versus Tie Fighter scene.  I think that I will replace that scene with a PHOTO of an actual Hasbro X-Wing and Tie Fighter engaged in combat!!!  I just whipped this up using Adobe Photoshop, but the final version will be a lot sexier (more shadowy "outer space" lighting on the fighters, motion blur on the stars, no “droop” on the s-foils of the X-wing, etc) !!:

Have you guys really been married 19 years?  Wow!  Many more to you both!  :)

Thank you so much Findswoman!!  That is so sweet of you!!

We have NOT been married for 19 years, but we have been together as a couple for that long.   Back in 1987 (!) my wife was 15 years old and I was 20.  We began dating and were INSEPERABLE ever since.

Finally, (after we both finished our studies, and began to build our home) we were married on Valentine's Day in the year 2000 at the top of the twin towers of NYC's World Trade Center.
 ;D ;) ;D

How long have you and Mr. Findshusband been together?

Wow, Roberto, your home theater setup is truly impressive! (And your living room's mighty fine looking, too.)  I see from this that you're the sort who makes the absolute most of everything you make and do, not just customizing.  Very cool indeed.  8)

Howdy Findswoman!!!

As always, you are so kind and supportive, and such an awesome friend. You always make my day and you always bring a smile to my face with your posts.  Thanks a million for the lovely words. You're the best!!

Alas, the Findshusband and I have nothing that can compare.  Just a small, old TV (smaller than the monitor of our iMac, I think) on a shelf across from a futon couch in our dinky Oakland, CA apartment.  But the Star Wars trilogy is still the Star Wars trilogy!

The magic of STAR WARS transcends virtually EVERY viewing situation, regardless of scope.  In the end, the most important thing when viewing the STAR WARS Saga at home is that there be an extra-special someone curled up next to you enjoying all the action, all the adventure, and all the exploits of Luke, Han, Leia, Chewie, Darth, Anakin, Obi-Wan and the gang!!  "Mr. Findshusband" is a lucky man to be able to share all that is his with YOU.  In that same way, I am a very blessed man. Mrs. Darklord has enjoyed everything STAR WARS right by my side for over 19 years now!  You can't put a price on that.  ;)

Warmest Regards,
-D

You have a really nice theatre there! I like the curtains on the sides, its a real nice touch.

I'm curious, though... Where do you two sit?

Thanks for the compliment Angry Ewok!!

To answer your question:

Our seating area is directly across from the theater.  We have a sofa (pictured here) and single chair (visible on the right)  The seating is good for about four people total.

If one sits on the couch, the theater's viewing area (TV) is directly ahead. This seating area is about 16 feet away from the theater.

There's a glass coffee table, and two end tables. The Sub woofer is tucked underneath the end table visible in the background.

The in-wall rear surround speakers are concealed behind  the two framed pictures on the back wall.

Hi Gang!

Like some of you, I built my "Home Theater" almost exclusively with viewings of the STAR WARS Saga in mind!!

I recently finished construction on it (just in time for the DVD release of  EPISODE III.

My wife and I live in an apartment in Brooklyn, NY,  and our funds are limited, so a full-blown dedicated "screening room" was not an option for us.  Instead we designed and converted our living room into a theater space and put in as much slick detail as we could.

This room still awaits wall to wall carpeting.

The Theater wall features, semi-circular "stage",   lit "cubby" spaces (awaiting carpeting), 119"-Wide archway opening, and "King Blue" velvet drapes and trim.

All lighting in the room is linked to electronic dimmers.

A full 5.1 THX sound system is installed in the room:  A Denon AV Reciever sends sounds to two B&W CDM 7NT Series tower speakers (one on either side of the TV).

A third (smaller) 7NT is installed above the TV (as the center channel).

The left and right surround speakers are B&W  CDM "In-Walls" (concealed behind two framed pictures on the back wall behind the couch).

The sub-woofer is the small Sunfire "Super Junior"  9" cube.  It's tucked in a corner under one of the end tables.

The TV is a 70" Hitachi LCD.

Unfortunately, this TV being all Black does NOT photograph very well at all.  I tried everything.  But the more light I threw on it, the more glossy reflections I got on its flat surface.  You can even see the reflection of my table lamp in the lower right hand corner of the screen.

For this reason, I had to use photoshop to lighten the outer cabinet details of the TV so they would be visible.  But this photo VERY closely approximates what the Theater looks like in person.

Naturally, I chose a nice STAR WARS image to have on the screen when I took the picture.

How about YOU?  Let's see how you all watch the STAR WARS Saga at home!!!

Roberto DARKLORD Williams

Chewie!!!

What's happening brother!!!  It's GREAT to hear from you!!  I always look forward to YOUR friendly, supportive comments with every entry I make!!

I've said this before and I'll say it again:  It's customizers like YOU that inspire me to keep my "game" as "up" as possible!!  Your customs and your photonovels are in a class all by themselves, and I'm one of you biggest fans!!

Thanks again for the kind words and the friendship!!

Warmest Regards,

Roberto DARKLORD Williams

Howdy Sith Lord Chaos!!!

Always great to chat with you!!! Thanks a bunch as usual for the kind words aboout these two latest customs of mine.  They are so misleading in that they seem like simple, straight-forward conversions, but in fact were a bit challenging in their own way.

As for my Bespin Han, I'm surprised you have not come across the finished photo of him yet.  I wrapped him up AGES ago.

But here he is to say hi:

And thanks to you too Metal Jedi for your kind words.  You're absolutely correct about the color difference of skin tones when you mix and match body parts when doing customs.  I actually plan on replacing Leia's hands with another pair that match her face better. I've already got them all picked out. ;)

Warmest Regards,

Roberto DARKLORD WIlliams

Hi Gang!!

So many of the close friends that I’ve made here in the customizing forums have asked me when my next batch of customized Original Trilogy character action figures will be ready to be seen.

I’m happy to report that I have a small group of customs that are now less than a month away from being unveiled. In the meantime, I thought I’d share two customs that I completed earlier this week.

As always, I’ve posted my personal thoughts behind the making of these figures and the recipes necessary to create them. I hope you all like them.
Warmest Regards,

Roberto DARKLORD Williams

Hi Talon Karde

I promise to take some photos of un-hooded Emperor soon.  Basically, if you've ever seen the unhooded SAGA Throne Roon Emperor figure, that is all there is under there. Kudos to Hasbro for their awesome face sculpt!! ;D

Thanks so much!!

And may I say what a pleasure it is to meet you Angry Ewok!

General Veers sends his warmest regards ;)

All my Best,

Hi Tallon_Karrde!!

Great to meet you!!   Thank you so very much for the kind words about my customs!!

Greatly, greatly appreciated!!!

Sadly, My figures are not for sale since I barely have time to make them for myself.

However, I always post full recipies and descriptions of all my customs so that ALL of my friends in the customizing community can create their own.  Believe me, with a little bit of practice and patience, they're really not too difficult to create. ;D

Very best of luck, and thanks again!!

Regards,

DARKLORD

Hi there HMI !!

Good to know ya!!  I'm really glad that you like my work and I sure do appreciate the kind words.

In all fairness to Kenner / Hasbro, I would NEVER be able to get the results that I do if not for THEIR fine products!!

As a customizer, I simply re-arrange things a bit, apply new paint, and wherever possible, employ soft-goods in a different application that strives for better fit. :)

Best Regards,

Roberto DARKLORD Williams
