The vintage R5-D4 was the perfect droid for the back of the vintage Y-wing!
I'm shocked you didn;t even consider the POTF2 R5-D4! :D

Yah....... ;)

R5-D4 was definitely the ideal for the Y-Wing... You couldn't put R2 in there obviously, so R5 it is.
I still can't get over the time it took to get a decent R5-D4 figure in the modern line. Probably one of the funnier things in the line's history. I am ok with R5 as he is too, but there's part of me wouldn't mind seeing even the BAD body re-used to give us a new spiffier R5... Hey, I'd buy it. *shrugs*
I removable "bad motivator" popping out of his head would be cool, as would a removable restraining bolt accessory, but either way I'm also not going to shed a tear if they NEVER make a new one. This is one that's cool to me, but almost more a set-piece for the Jawas than a figure I care much about. And with BAD I'm probably even less likely to ever really demand a new R5.
Still... like I said... I'd buy one if they did it using one of the superior figure bases they have available now. :-\
My vintage figure was without a body for a long, long time... for some reason his sticker was lost long before R2's.

I agree Jesse, the lack of a proper R5-D4 for so long was a huge head scratcher. Add to the fact they still sort of f'ed up the paint scheme (specifically the back panels) I'd not shy away from a new R5-D4 in the future.
Vintage R5 was another bad guy to me...I think I said in the R2 thread of how I used to pretend they were both cannons due to their gaping holes in the barrel bottom. R2 was the good guys cannon and R5 was the bad guys...ah memories.

modern R5D4 only needs to have painted blue the 6 white stripes sculpted on his right side on his torso.
The details of his legs are amazing.
vintage r5d4 was taken for me as a droid for the rebel hangar, when I was a child.

I am absolutely loving these retro versus modern posts....I had an unnatural love of R5 D4 as a kid, so love the modern version. Much, much, much nicer than the RPG version from the 90s!

I like the update, but wee NEED a retractable leg, as do ALL R5s, R2s, etc... Also, enough with that ugly glued-on panel already!!! :(
Also, "astro droids" have just gotten too big over the last few years. R2 goes up to poor 3PO's chest, and almost to Luke's shoulder, now.
I hope they scale it back with the next mold.

When I was a kid, R5 was Artoo's pal, and if Han ever needed an Astro-droid, that was who he went to. And as everyone said, he was the copilot for the Y-Wing from the moment it arrived.
I am happy with Saga2 R5. The bad motivator works for me.

So I guess we have Scott's childhood to blame for the monstrosity that was POTF2 R5. I bet you just loved it, didn't you?!

Thoughts on the new R5-D4? Better than the Saga version?
I see they still have not painted the back panels red

Plus he doesn't have a restraining bolt. None of the R5s that we have gotten have one but if you look at the "source" image you'll see that he had one in the movie just like R2.
-
TSC version is still better but not by much.
-
I agree with Jayson if for no other reason than the new one's clean and R5D4 shouldn't be that clean. The last one had a wash that's subtle but noticeable, plus the "bad motivator" is cool and accurate.
New one will work as Porkins' R5 well enough.

So Hasbro got a second chance to get R5-D4 right and DIDN'T do the red panels on the back in this new version? THAT would have been enough to get me to buy the TVC version. But instead Hasbro lost a sale to me.

The new one (http://www.yakface.com/TGuide2004/ActionFigures/TVC/basicfigures/VC40/lf.html) does have an ever-so-faint wash. Nothing like the TSC version but it is there.

I couldn't tell by Scum's photo. Thanks Jayson, as I see it now. It's nowhere near where it needs to be in terms of grime though, so I'll stick with the last one as my R5. Plus the motivator is still fun, if not a little annoying when you want the head turned but no motivator jutting out. :-\
-
The newer one just looks cheap to me, like some kind of Happy Meal toy. I know it reuses the BAD parts and easily comes apart so maybe that's why. Honestly I bet we get a "redone" R5-D4 in a few years since they redid the R2-D2 mold (and it's a fine mold, IMO, although I would like to see some slight mods for a "normal" rerelease).
But yeah, I'm sticking with the 2006 version.

This particular droid always ominously reminds me of the dreadful rocket launcing R5 - ughhh.
The original vintage version was better than that abomination and at least this new rendition isn't 'gimmicky' although all of this is a gimmick.
