Title: Great Job Everyone
Post by: Darth Kenobi on May 25, 2007, 09:30 AM
Just wanted to say that you guys did a very impressive job with this project.  I ended up watching it for a while yesterday and was shock at how good it look.  So far one of the best things at the con that I saw.   The Group did a great job.

I mean, it's better than I expected considering how many people were involved in this, and over such distances!  Think about how many roadblocks we had throughout the year (chats and almost-cancellations  :'().  Bravo to the project leaders on a fantastic job!  By the way, I'm pleasantly surprised by how much the cityscape resembles Glassman's concept images!

We did. We got pretty close considering we had no clue what this thing would look like until we opened it up at C4.

I got to see the completed project first hand, and CONGRATS to you all who participated because the results were FANTASTIC!  There was nothing else like it at CIV.  The size and the number of custom pieces indicated the massiveness of the project, and it was all pulled together!  Great job to the guys who set it up because the display tables were provided late and some issues with the table skirts existed.  Awesome creativity and I love the little things like the Buck Rogers pieces I almost missed if someone hadn't said something.  It was super!

I just got back from the show tonight.  Wow, the UGP looks amazing in person!!  I was honored to be there.   For those that can't make the show, its quite a site.  There was NEVER less than 4 people standing around admiring.  Most of the time, the entire perimeter is completely packed with people!  It has to be one of the most visited exhibit at the whole show.

I've got a gazillion photos.  I'll post a bunch when I get back home next week.

Everyone,

It was GREAT seeing this in all its glory today at Celebration and it was even better getting to meet so many of you in person.  Phurby, Ryan, Brent, Anton, Jedistyle, Mac, DSJ - you guys are my heroes.

I took a bunch of pics which, sadly, are a little dim (they had just started kicking people out and lowering the lights!)

But the entire project was truly amazing and I was delighted to be able to make a teensy contribution to such an incredible undertaking.

Kudos to EVERYONE involved.

Phruby, I'm sorry but I have a lot going on right now.  We just got home from the hospital this afternoon with the baby that was born on Wednesday night.  I also am without proper software currently to do much - my PC crashed and I just had a new hard drive installed Monday, and don't have the software installed yet that I need.  I'll get to things as soon as I can, but right now I don't have the time or the capability to do much more than I have, which was run a front page feature on Friday at Yak.  Sorry.

Congrats Chewie!

I've been staying at a friends while my car is in limbo, so I don't have much time, my computer, or even a good connection speed. But As soon as I can, I'll make sure there's a nice gallery up on the UGP site too.

Fantastic! Congratulations Chewie on your new Padawan!  :D

I know your busy with the baby. I'm just really mad at the rest of the Yakface staff that is taking pictures and posting at C4. You have nothing to do with it. I just though you could pressure them a little bit. I mean we are hyping them alot during the show. It would have been nice to have some coverage during the show in their official picture area.

I would like ti give props to the spectators. I don't think (to my knowlege) there were any serious problems with any body touching anything. I think they were quite respectfull. In fact I pretented to be a spectator and started rearanging my ship. some people were a bit shocked. It was funny.

Thanks guys, I wish there had been a picture section for the UGP at Yak too.  I can't speak for who was in charge of the pics that were taken or the process since I told everyone up front that I really wouldn't be able to be involved with anything on the UGP past April because of having to get prepared for the baby.  I was starting to get a plan in place for some coverage, but then the baby came two weeks early and I lost all communication - first from my PC crash and then being at the hospital for 5 days.  So my apologies for there not being a special section dedicated to it.

I'm ok though if anyone wants to point the finger at me, because deep down I feel I did do my best for the project in promoting it several spotlights over the past few months, promoting the Fritzkrieg auction, sending customs, vehicles, etc... I also know that at one time a lot of people were ready to quit the project, and I tried to push for everyone to not give up... I think the end result is a project that got a lot of exposure, and everyone involved had a blast.  At least from what I've been reading, everyone did... I would have done more and been there too if I could have, but just getting to see the pics is a treat.

Anyways, thanks again everyone for a wonderful experience with the UGP.  I only wish that I could have contributed more towards the end.

As for the baby, which is the coolest thing that's ever happened to me, here's a few pics if anyone hasn't seen them yet - KIEFER JUSTIN COOK (http://cgi.denpetersen.com/YAK1/viewtopic.php?t=1702&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0).  Also, thanks for the nice words about the little one, he's definitely my best custom ever.  Several more pics of him are on page two of the link.

Chewie, I completely blame Ben for not taking pictures of the project at C4. He should have known about it. Bill should have made sure he knew. It was totally out of your hands.  :-\

First of all, Chewie, what a charming young Wookling!  Definitely the custom of a lifetime.  But it looks like you had a WHOLE LOT of help from Pam!  :)

Incidentally, I hope the li'l fellow is/was all right; when you said he was born Wednesday but you only came home from the hospital over the weekend, I was a bit worried for a sec.  It seemed like a longer time than usual, but then what do I know? :)

And yes, absolutely gotta echo everyone's congratulations to the staff of the UGP on a job AMAZINGLY done and on a MOST IMPRESSIVE job bringing this thing from dream to reality.  Seeing this diorama so greatly enjoyed by so many fans many of whom have NO idea at all about our hobby -- that was a real high point of the Celebration for me.  But then meeting & re-meeting so many of you -- more than I've met at previous cons -- that made it all even better:

Ryan
Darth Anton
Quazar
Phruby
DSJ
BrentS
Dark Jedi Ben
JediMAC

To all, big thank-yous, big congratulations, and much love!

Thanks Findswoman.  He's doing well, no worries.  My wife needed to have an emergency casarean delivery, so we needed to stay at the hospital a bit longer than usual.  I'm not sure if I mentioned that he came 2 weeks early or not.  But he is doing great!

Thanks Brent, I would think we can still add some more pics, we'll see what you've got and take it from there!

Good, good.  Glad to hear all's all right & that mom and baby are doing well -- two weeks early, that's the very edge of the usual due date margin, isn't it?  I was a C-section baby myself (& about a month early, but I'm told they messed up the calculation anyhow), so young Kiefer is in good company!  :D ;)

Incidentally, as C4 / UGP photos go, I have just posted my own C4 album at Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/8581268@N06/sets/), and invite all and sundry to take a look.

Thanks, Glass!  It was a wonderful weekend and I felt very glad to be part of it in my own small way.  And how are you doing?  Were you able to be at the Con?

I'd like to Thank everyone that participated in this project, watching this from the beginning on the site & seeing the final assembly in person is just awesome. Very impressive display & the crowd of people I saw viewng & even at the draws was sweet.  (http://www.cheesebuerger.de/images/midi/froehlich/d028.gif)

So...
What now?

Now we say congrats, tell everyone what a great job they did, and be done with it all. C5 is too far off to determine whether or not we want to try for the UGP v2.0, until we know what city it will be in we can't do anything.

I don't think I could adequately compliment everyone enough. I can only reiterate how in awe I am of everyone's work and cool it was to meet everyone at Celebration. In addition, it was a unique experience that I don't often go though in that I was on a natural high from the overwhelming enthusiasm from the attendees. It's quite a thing for a mass of people to be excited over something that you were part of creating, and it wouldn't have happened if everyone who contributed, even in the slightest, hadn't participated.

Well We could figure out what Scene we are doing, A fan fic or a city or location from ep 5 Ie Cloud city or Hoth echo base.

Thanks for the congrats everyone! Like I told Paul: I'm a big fan of doing more Judde Lulos. It's a cool world with a cool story, and it hasn't been developed nearly enough - in my humble opinion ;D Plus, it showcases the fan appreciation for EU, which is something great to let LFL & big H know about.

Also, as far as "where do we go from here?" Well, there's been mention of re-starting the smaller projects...

Everyone did do great on the project ( also thanks everyone for the kind words in the forum threads, the PMs and emails about the little one, baby Kiefer is doing good, but a bit grumpy today  ;D ).

As for a C5 project, I'm up for it.  I do think I need a mental break from it though, but would love to see us try and do another one.  I wish it were in St. Louis someday.

I heard c5 was going to be in Oshawa just outside of Toronto.

I think it is safe to say that is just a rumor, I think the chances of it being held there are slim to none. However if that is the case, there won't be a sequel to our little project at the next Celebration. It will need to be held in a city in which we have a local guy or guys, like Paul and Anthony, who are willing to do exactly what they did. C5 will likely be held in a big U.S. city. The majority of people who go to the Celebrations are from the U.S., they aren't going to make that majority cross a border and have to deal with customs/passports/etc. That will deter too many people from going. That would be a horrible business move on their part. Offhand I can think of only four U.S. cities that would even be options for us.

So...
What now?

Now we say congrats, tell everyone what a great job they did, and be done with it all. C5 is too far off to determine whether or not we want to try for the UGP v2.0, until we know what city it will be in we can't do anything.
Well We could figure out what Scene we are doing, A fan fic or a city or location from ep 5 Ie Cloud city or Hoth echo base.

Based on what I was just saying we still can't even decide what type of locale we want to create. There is no sense in getting everyone's hopes up for something that may or may not happen two years from now. Just starting this last July gave us enough problems with participation dropping off. It isn't going to be a question of whether or no we will be able to get booth space, I think we may have secured permanent booth space based on how this was received at CIV, but it is a question of whether or not the city they choose even works for us.

So now we can take a break from the UGP (PenDragon and the web team excluded ;) ), it has been a very stressful last couple of months for the leadership, we need a break. Pat ourselves on the back and recognize what we were able to pull off. Everyone can focus on their own customs for a while again, I know I'd like to. I wouldn't mind seeing the regular group projects return, and if it isn't too much trouble we coverage at the UGP site could keep some interest going overthere so it doesn't die down. That way if we do get to the UGP v2 we will have had an active site for the previous year or so. If CIV/CIII have any bearing on what is to come, I fully don't expect to hear where it will be held for another year. Mary did say that she liked L.A. a lot and that they really want to have a Celebration every other year.

Good job again guys. Enjoy the time off and hopefully we can do this again soon! :)

What I would like to do is start up a small one or two figure/ship/dio group project like we use to do at JD, Yak and RS. We will basically choose some character (fan fic, EU or movie) and make the same figure, discuss how to make it, show work in progress pictures, come up with a background story and make the same figure in paralle. Basically this is what we did for UGP but on a very small scale over a month time. We will do lots of these until its time for the big project. We won't start building or discussing the big C5 project until 6 months before C5 is to take place. There is no way to keep people focused for two years. Don't worry about size or booth space. We've got it covered.

Regarding the web site, we have some ideas that we are kicking around. You will see something pretty cool very soon there. I think you are all going to benefit from it.
