Title: Movies that make you cry
Post by: Scott on June 23, 2003, 11:45 AM
 :'(

I am never ashamed to admit that some movies just have that certain oomph to reduce me to tears every time I see them

From the obvious

The end of Saving Private Ryan
Schindler's List

To the not so obvious

I cry every time E.T. goes home, I always wanted to be Elliott, and the fact he died and came back makes for some stellar cinema

Notice how there are 3 Spielberg movies here

I also cried profusely during the schlock fest called City of Angels with Nic Cage and Meg Ryan.  My wife and I were in the process of tying the knot and the song (In the arms of the angel) and moment just hit us right I guess and we both just broke down

I also remember sobbing profusely when Han was put into the carbon chamber...poor guy

Oh and my mom and dad tease me to this day that I used to cry during the Wizard of Oz because I was scared of the flying mokets and I didn't think Dorothy was ever going to make it home

I guess I am a big softy...

Yes, a rare moment is when I am reduced to tears from a film.  I actually cried at the end of Forrest Gump when he is talking to Jenny at her grave.

Also the end of Old Yeller.  And when I first saw ET when he is supposed to be dead.  Other than that I think I've been alright when it comes to teary moments in the films.  I am probably forgetting something though.

The Phantom Menace.  'Nuff said.

Other than that, I refuse to list any other movies that made me cry, lest I look like a sniveling sissy boy like Scott here...   :-*

Uh...  I mean, I've never cried at any other movies.  Yeah, that's it.  Just Little House on the Prairie on occassion...   :o

Favorite Little House on the Prarie story...

The Last epsidoe, they blow up the town right.  My sister was a huge fan of the show and was crying her eyes out, my brother and me were cheering every house they blew up louder and louder.  To this day she is a little ticked we ruined the last show for her...classic comedy there

Old Yeller is a great one too...

Crying shows you are in touch with your emotions, chicks dig it :-*

First two three four that spring to mind (besides the afore-mentioned E.T.):

(SLIGHT SPOILERS PROBABLY LAY AHEAD)

Field of Dreams:  "Dad?  Wanna have a catch?"

Magnolia:  Mostly during Quiz Kid Donnie Smith's monologue to the bartender, but a couple other places as well.

American Beauty:  The aftermath of Lester's death--especially his wife crying all over his clothes in their closet, and the shot of his daughter as a little girl, with the sparkler).

Philadelphia:  Home movies of Andrew as a little boy at his wake, with Neil Young's "Philadelphia" playing in the background.

There are others that affect me to some degree, but none really as much as the ones above.

I haven't cried in any movies but have came close to it while watching:
Pearl Harbor (During the attack)

I'm not use of anyother times.

In The Two Towers, when the Rohirrim, led by Gandalf, ride down into the Helm’s Deep battle.

Also when Aragorn says, “this is a good sword, Haleth, son of Hama…there is always hope”. And also when Gamling says to Theoden “your men, my Lord, will follow you to whatever end”. Plus throughout Theoden’s “Where is the horse and the rider?” speech.

And when Gandalf returns, and Theoden’s “no parent should have to bury their child” line. And Haldir turning up at Helms Deep with the elves, and Elrond warning Arwen of the emotional dangers of falling in love with a human.

The appearance of Shadowfax. Smeagol remembering his real name. The look of determination on Pippin’s face when the Ents decide to go to war and Treebeard’s “it is likely that we go to our doom” line.

Sam’s “it’s like in the great stories, mister Frodo..the one’s that really mattered” speech. The music, “Gollum’s Song” at the end of the film.

I was crying for most of that film actually. The same with AOTC, but not in the same way ;D

E.T.
Schindler's List
Saving Private Ryan
(I think I should stop watching tear-jerking Spielberg films)
 And Braveheart, at the end.

Also, Boromir's death in Fellowship of the Ring. Also Gandalf's line "All you have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to you."

Also, Boromir's death in Fellowship of the Ring. Also Gandalf's line "All you have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to you."

That reminds me... :)

TFOTR:

Both of the above, specifically when Aragon acknowledges “our people” and the look of hope on Boromir’s face.

Also when Gandalf tells Elrond that “it is in Men, that we must place our hope”, plus Arwen’s Elvish line “the Shadow does not hold sway yet…not over you…not over me”.

The whole Extended Edition gift giving scene, especially how it makes sense of Gimli’s line about Galadriel that “all who look upon her, fall under her spell”.

And the choral music in the background as the Fellowship leave Gandalf in Moria is heartbreaking. It’s the look of complete fear on Aragorn’s face when he realises he must be the leader that gets me, along with Merry and Pippin lying on the ground in despair. It makes the scene of Gandalf’s return in TTT even better.

Can you tell that I quite like LOTR? ;D

Why they ever put Gandalf in any of the TTT is mindboggling to me, casual Joe Blow fan would have been so freaked out by his return that it would have a made a cool moment even cooler.

I just remembered a rather sobbing TV show...When Dr Green died on ER last year...gut wrenching

That Philadelphia moment also got me too Virex

I also have to go with Schindler's List- I cried from beginning to end watching that one. I was an absolute mess. Saving Private Ryan also, but to a lesser degree. Shine got me pretty good, as well as A Beautiful Mind and Sling Blade. I'm sure there are others, but they elude me at the moment.

I don't think I've ever cried during a movie in my entire adult life.  While some moments can be deep and thought provoking, tears have never actually flowed.  My wife, on the other hand, cries a river during alot of films.  Most notably is the ending of Armageddon when Bruce Willis says goodbye to his daughter.  Even though she's never said it, I know it reminds her of her father, who she lost when she was 18.

However, during my childhood, I remember crying when Apollo Creed died from massive beating he took from Ivan Drago in Rocky IV.

When I was little, I bawled and screamed when the Ewok dies on screen in ROTJ. I still get a little misty eyed, when his little Ewok pal tries to wake him up and starts crying.

For the rest, I cry pretty much over everything everyone else has listed.

I get a little teary thinkin' about it, even..

Ahh..ID4 (Independance Day)...

"Alright you alien ********. In the words of my generation..UP...YOOOOURS!!"

Then Randy Quaid takes his plane nose up into the motherships laser beam...

"Hello, boys! I'm baaaaaaackkkk!"

Dramatic pause..music stops..

BOOM!!!!

I can't believe you didn't list the obvious...Vader dying in ROTJ...Yoda dying?  Ben dying?  Helloooo?

Actually, Buffy the Vampire Slayer has made me cry several times (no jokes about your opinions of the show)  I've really gotten into that and Angel, so, when things happen I feel somewhat affected emotionally.

Some of these were when I was a bit younger...

Patch Adams.

What dreams may come.  (I'm a sucker for Robin Williams I guess.)

The Truman Show.

The original King Kong.  I was so sad when the planes killed him.  :(

Baby.  (It was a dinosaur movie of sorts...was a part where the daddy dino gets killed by the bad guys.)

The Patriot.  (mel gibson...not segal.)

The Last Unicorn.

The Mask of Zorro.

I'm sure there are lots more...I am a big wuss.

Here's my list...

- ET
- Braveheart
- Signs (when the wife of Mel Gibson dies)
- Pearl Harbor
- The Patriot
- Titanic

I know there are a couple others that make me sappy, but I just can't think of them right now.   :'(

They threw me out of the theater during the re-release.  I was so loud.  The clapping didn't help either. :P

So much anti Ewok sentiment around here...... yeesh! Just signs of people who have way too much difficulty realizing Ewoks are a vastly superior race

Short, hairy and primitive?  = superior?  Good lord man, they worshipped 3PO.  Goldenrod the golden god?  Ugh.  If they had any brains they'd be worshipping R2, clearly the brighter and MUCH funnier of the two. ;D

Just upset because they knew precisely how to exploit the weaknesses of the Imperial Garrison stationed on Endor... Despite the fact that they have one of the most advanced militaries in the galaxy, the Ewoks had enough military intelligence to know that blasters wouldnt be as effective as primitive weaponry ;)

I must admit, I was close to tears during Boromir's death scene in FOTR.

I don't think I've ever actually wept openly during a movie. Maybe emotional weeping, if there is such a thing. ;)

Not a movie, but a video game on X-box. Also it didn't make me cry, but made me feel a little sad.

SPOILER:

At the end of the game " HALO", after HALO  exploded, There was only 2 surivial. Master Chief and Cortana( A holographic  AI). It made me felt a little tingly because MC was the only surivial, when 200 marine soldiers died on halo.

As a kid the only movie that I cried in was Transformers the Movie. That scene where Optimus dies was so sad and devastating.  I tried to keep from letting my friends see me cry though, but it was so sad.

Grown up for some reason the opening of the Lion King made me tear up, I guess the song was that powerful. I know I was crying during the war opening war scenes in Saving Private Ryan, just seeing all those men being killed got to me. I know that any movies where animals get hurt or killed will automatically start me weeping. Oh and the one scene in Miracle on 34th Street that gets me every single time I see it is the scene in which Susan (natalie Wood) is watching Kris Kringle work and a lil girl is brought up to see Kris by her mom. She doesn't say anything because she can't speak english. The mom had just adopted her from a dutch orphanage, and explains that to Kris, and when Kris begins to speak Dutch that lil girl's eyes light up.  Gets to me each and every time.

I'm sure there are more movies, but I can't think of them right now.

Oh and the Ewok scene hurts still, it's so sad.

When I saw Yoda die in the theatre as a little scoundrel, I thought the world had just ended. I cried and cried and cried...I was so worried about Luke, on his own, against Vader and that creepy Emperor. I cried again when Vader threw the Emperor into the pit (tears of joy) and yet again when the rebels were united and started partying down with the Ewoks. Oh, and I also cried when the Ewok died and the other one tried to wake him up. Return of the Jedi was an emotional trainwreck for my adolescent mind. I love that movie...  :'(

I remember getting a little misty at the end of Forrest Gump.

Regarding Henry.

I'm sure there are a few others. And hey, crying during emotionally dramatic performances is called catharsis (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=catharsis). Its a Greek word, I'm a Greek guy, I'll enjoy shedding a tear or two during movies, thank you very much! ;)

Life Is Beautiful? I also shed a few tears for that one. My girlfriend was a wreck! The credits were rolling, and people were filing out of the theatre, and she was just sitting there in tears. (gave me time to dry my eyes out too! ;))

It happened again, twice in one weekend!

On Friday my wife and I watched The Pianist, we both started crying when a Jewish Boy was crying during one of the scenes in a slum.  It still boggles my mind that the Holocaust happened.  Seeing the boy crying made us both think of what we would do in a similart situation with our boy :'(

Then on Saturday night we watched October Sky which is a really, really good movie.  Couldn't help but get choked up in the last few scenes of the movie...It was the Feel Good Hit of 1999!

It is about a kid in West Virginia who lives in a coal town. Inspired by Sputnik he starts to build rockets with wacky results!
