Title: SAGA Drying Up Again?
Post by: Jim on December 3, 2003, 07:28 AM
The same thing is happening this year as it was last.  No new SAGA figs again in any stores in my area.  The last wave seen in my area was the Emperor wave about 2 months ago.  Now all the pegs are either empty or stuck with older stock.  I realize this is the Christmas season, but no figs?  Anyone else seeing a trend similar to late last year?

I'm not sure what to think yet, I was hoping that Saga would be a little easier to find now that most of the stores around here have cleared out the older stuff...but I haven't seen a whole lot lately.  I can't complain, as I have seen remnants of the Dignitary/Bail/Padme wave, but never the whole wave at once (and I still haven't seen Obi or the Concept Trooper, the ones I was actually looking for :P).  Otherwise, around here, it has basically been solid Clone Wars figures at most stores, as well as plenty of Screen Scenes.  I'm really hoping things pick up on the Saga side of things, because I haven't been preordering any 2004 figures with the hopes that I could find them at retail...but I'm starting to worry a little bit too.

Stuffs been hitting like crazy in the NY area.  Including the new Ultra figures at just about every TRU I've been to in the past couple of days.  And Target's been getting the latest SAGA wave in pretty decent quantity.  It might just be a regional thing for you.

Ultra figures :o  Damn Nick, you need any more hockey variants ;)

I gotta agree with Nick.  As a Queens, NY, resident I've been seeing lots of Saga and Clone Wars.  In fact, I found Elan and Padme at a K-mart  last weekend, Bail and teh Dignitary at a Target the week beofre.   And I too found an Ultra 3PO tonight at TRU.  He was the last one.

However, I'm sure it will be like this until X-mas, but after that I think things will dry up like last year.
If that happens, I will consider ordering online.

Well, living in the Chicagoland area you think there would be tons of good Star Wars goodies, but hardly a thing.  One of my buddies (Darth Berger) found me an Ayy Vida (did I spell that right?), but I haven't seen anything new in a while.  Well, I did find a Saga A-Wing Fighter, but no new figures.

I've totally lucked out on my SAGA finds lately, so I won't be complaining one bit about it for a while.

My gripe though is the overproduction of CW Anakin/Yoda wave.  As if there weren't enough of these pegwarming pieces of junk, they release this wave again with the red ARC Trooper.  I have no problem with red ARC Troopers being released, but they should have released it in a different wave, not a reissue wave of that junk.

Has anyone found the Clone Wars Wave 3 yet or seen it?  I noticed Entertainment Earth is sold out or "OUT OF STOCK - More on Order" already.  >:(

Well, round these parts things haven't been too good at my Targets or TRU, but its definitely just my immediate area. The pegs are chock full of late '02 figures and the occasional Hoth Han.

I'm picking up that CW wave from EE today willcall. I mentioned in the store reports section that I'm worried about this wave at retail, based on EE being extremely late in recieving the earlier CW shipments when b&m stores were getting them en-masse. Now, they have them first, which could mean Hasbro isn't busy shafting small etailers to get stock out to key accounts like walmart. We'll see, I hope thats not the case...

Hey Nicklab, which stores were you checking? I just went to TRU Times Square on my lunch break, and I didn't find anything new. And Union Square seems like a lost cause. I don't think I've ever found anything there.

i might get lucky tonight and score some Clone Wars Wave 3 figures, if the comic store got their's in stock, but i really doubt they did already.

Sorry Lando, I only share that kind of info at the NJSWCC.  It's a local New Jersey thing I'm part of.

However, during the late summer, I was going to the Times Square store somewhat often.  Several times I did okay there, so it might be worth checking back.  It is, after all, the flagship store of the chain, and they get a lot of the good stuff.

Hey Nick, you can talk all you want about New Jersey stores and finds at  your NJ site, but I think if you're finding stuff in NY, and NYC, you should share with us too.

It is just so typical of people from NJ to benefit from NYC, and do nothing to support New Yorkers!

(I'm joking.  I grew up in NJ!)

I think it would be cool to do that. We are a pretty small community over here, so I don't think it would do any damage.

I can understand your reasoning behind keeping your info exclusive, but it still seems kind of elitist. Obviously its your prerogative, but aren't you also a member of this community?

Don't take this personally, I'm just looking at it from the other side of the fence.  :-\

And just for some lighthearted fun, here's you!!! :P

The intention behind it isn't elitist in the least.  It's more of a rewards based system.  Basically, it asks you to contribute reports in order to access them.

As for my contributions to this community, I think it's everyone's perogative to decide what they will and will not contribute in a given forum.  And I just prefer to keep that kind of info local.  Not a slight against anyone, just the way I prefer to do things.

This is a little bit older topic, but I thought with everyone's different store reports lately (or lack of), it might be relevant again.  It seems like we are going through another dry spell (many areas at least) lately, with little to nothing new showing up.  Personally, in the Eastern Nebraska/Western Iowa area I haven't seen anything since the Tatooine Wave in the last week of January or so.  I was fortunate enough to receive a number of figs (including Ultra Wampa) from Matt (JediMAC) here, to help me keep caught up.  Otherwise, I haven't seen an Ultra figure for quite some time (Jabba where are you?), and nothing new basic wise either.  I have seen all of the Animated Clone Wars figures at one time or another (except for the Clonetrooper, which I was also helped out on by Matt).  Also, this past weekend, there were a couple sets of the Maul/Obi glasses at Target.  I picked up the Obi, so at least it is something new.  I guess this isn't anything like the drought I (and many of us) went through in parts of last year, but it seems like there is a little lull in Star Wars land right now.  I'm almost scared to hear any new wave finds, since I'm already behind with the Jabba's Palace and Yavin waves :P.  Good luck to everyone in their searches!

I thought I would be put in the poor house this year, but if nothing shows up I might forget about Star Wars (probably not on purpose) and stop collecting.  I used to check my Target about once every 2 weeks, but now its more like once every 2 months... NOTHING.

Here in Utah we are seeing, while I am seeing the Yavin wave in abundance. I scored four cases of the Yavin Wave (please do not yell at me, I resell to my fellow collectors so we ensure that we get em) and have sold them to my fellow collectors here in northern Utah. So the Yavin wave is showing up. Word of advice though, is Target, TRU and Wally seem to only be getting one or two cases in so the figures GO FAST.
This is alot like last year IMO. First of the year had figures coming out, but only in small allotments. Luckily we got them repacked in August forward and we could find them quite readily.

I found the Yavin wave today, minus Tanus Spijek. STILL haven't found the Jabba's Palace wave. Grr. Arrgh.

Only one case though. Complete BS.

Good score, HMI.  I was in Kansas City for a few days and found nothing there either.  More Simpsons stuff than I've seen in ages - lots of TRU exclusives, including the THOH4 which never came here to Iowa.  Tons of those.

Both KB's there were closing up shop, 70% off, nothing.

Spuffy- did you notice how the Waterloo Wal-mart has exactly two figures on the pegs? I'm thinking about pulling a John Stossel by sneaking in my digicam, taking a few pictures of the place (it's a hellhole in every nook and cranny) and sending them to Wal-Mart HQ complaining about the place.

Last thing I found was Jabba's Palace Lando, along with Bar2-D2 and R1-G4, and that's it. Unfortunatley I found wave 2 ultras yesterday but had no money  :-\

So I guess it's not dry down here, just a lot of thirsty collectors.

I totally hear you, HMI.  That place is a zoo, no exaggeration.  The last time I was there we were in the checkout lane for a half hour because the person did not know what they were doing.  This was after finding both bathrooms locked, only after walking clear around the store because half of it was inaccessible due to cleaning.

Which begs the question: why do they clean?  It appears to make no difference whatsoever.

Saw a Deluxe - Wampa at Wal-Mart.

But found not one single, new 3 3/4 figure.  So far 2004 is just like early 2003!

Seems to continue to be dry as a bone around here.  Got a chance to do some shopping in a little bigger area (Omaha, NE) this weekend, and it was almost worse there than it is around here.  All I could find was Dignitaries, repacks of Barris, Aayla, and Younglings, and some more Animated Clone Wars figures.  I guess every year has some sort of down time like this, hopefully things will start showing up for people soon.  A side note, I don't think any of the Wal-Marts nearest to us (all three of the "super" variety) even have pegs for the Ultra wave, has anyone else noticed this?

This is pretty sad, that Hasbro has to do this.  I still have not seen any of the new waves past Hall of Fame.  I hate this so much.  I think Hasbro needs to open up a online site, and let whoever wants to order their merchandise let them.  They are being very crappy right now!

I've finally started to see some new stuff trickling out the last couple weeks at the various retail chains, including the Ultra, and even some of the Yavin and Jabba's Palace figures.  Thank god, 'cause I was really starting to worry these stores were dropping the line based on what I've seen so far this year.

Good to have some new figures again finally!  Just like old times.   8)

I just ordered some of the Jabba's Palace wave from BBTS. The packages are in bad condition, but since I'm an opener, it doesn't matter. I also scored the Ultra Jango and Obi-Wan.

So, now I just need J'Quille and Tanus Spijek, like everyone else on these boards.

Oh yeah, they still had a few figures left, in their sub-standard category. I've ordered from these guys a few times, and it's always been great.

Hey I haven't seen the Han Solo, C3PO, Leia, Vader Throne, Emperor, Padme Wedding, Snowtrooper, Kit Fisto Clone, Red ARC, Saesee Clone, Articulated Clone, Maquarrie Stormie, Luke Jabba's Palace, R2 Jabba Barge, R1G4, Lando, JQuille, Tanus, Clone Packs, Droid Packs, Anakin's Ship, Geonosian Ship, Anakin Swoop, Tyrannus Speederbike, Hailfire Droid Ship,

So what I think we can all do is help each other out!

You know, my main gripe with Hasbro (of which there have been MANY over the years) is that their eyes are bigger than their stomachs, so to speak.  They have put out around 18 figures so far this year (not counting the HOF wave) and out of those, how many of them can we honestly say we've seen on a regular basis?

Three.  The Hoth wave, which came out in early December.  Through the help of online friends, I've managed to keep up to date through the Yavin wave, but I have yet to see any of the Luke Jedi wave or J'Quille on a peg, and I only saw Lando, Rappertunie, Holo Luke, and Elom once.  The Yavin wave I have seen a few times, but they're there a few hours and then they're gone again, not to show up again for weeks and weeks.  It took me three separate times to be able to complete that wave, and that is with characters that, let's face it, aren't exactly going to be flying off the pegs if they were put out in decent numbers.

The point to all my incessant rambling is that Hasbro keeps on cranking new stuff out but doesn't spend enough time getting it to the shelves.  By the time a new wave comes out, people should have been able to find the last wave, for pete's sake.  Instead, Hasbro just gives some excuse like "those cases are in the system" as if to say, it's not our problem.  If they're not going to work on getting the stuff out, then don't make so damned much in the first place.  I like having a lot of different figures come out in a year as much as the next guy, but a large variety does no good when nobody can find anything.  Hasbro can moan all they want about retail not ordering enough, but they're to blame as well, if not moreso for the lack of new product.

For me, the POTJ line will always be the pinnacle of case packouts.  There weren't any constant recards and it seemed as if every case was evenly packed with new figures.  If a figure was shipped in a subsequent case, it was because there was a demand for it.  And outside of a few figures (primarily the Bo'Shek and Eeth Koth waves), none of the POTJ stuff was particularly difficult to find (oh, and the clean Biker Scout, which I saw once and from there on out it was always the dirty version).  To me, that system worked.  Why Hasbro went back to their POTF2-era four new figures and 8 pegwarmers is beyond me.  To make it worse, they've started shortpacking figures that are new to a case (Elom, for example) while repackaging figures that everybody either already has or doesn't want in the first place (Hangar Duel Anakin, Coruscant Obi-Wan).

The thing that is scaring me is that these last two Saga waves are going to be a repeat of the last few waves of the other lines.  With the OTC coming up, Hasbro will be switching to a new SKU for those figures, and the Saga SKU will pretty much go away completely.  I don't think I need to remind anyone that's been around since the beginning of POTF2 of the Spacetrooper/Darktrooper wave, the Sio Bibble wave, TC-14/R2-B1, or the Motti/Leia wave problems.

And the thing that irks me most is that even after all the problems they've had over the years, and the success with the POTJ case packouts, Hasbro still hasn't figured out case assortments.  Sad.

I mad a trip to KBToys today and found tons of Star Wars 2004 figures!

They had about :

5x Tanus Spijek - which I was shocked because he is rare isnt he?
10 or more - General Dodonna
10 or more - Captain Antilles
10 or more - Dutch Vander
5x Luke Skywalker - Holographic
2x J' Quille
10 or more - Lando Calrissian - Jabba's Palace
10 or more - Rappertunie
7x TIE Fighter Pilot

I was so shocked, so yes I picked up 1 of each.  Amazing it was!

Which one is the rarest?

Actually, Tanus should start to become easier to find.  EE has him coming out two per case in a new case assortment that should arrive in May, maybe it is hitting now. J'Quille should be the hard one cause he is only in one case with no future release in another wave assortment out at this time. Hasbro could change all of that.
I personally think the Saga will be hard to find until late October and early November. After the OTC has been released, I think we'll see the Saga hit the holiday rush like we did in 2003.  Then next Jan. to April becomes VERY dry for collectors.

More of the same around here, after checking out Target and TRU this weekend.  Target re-stocked (since last week when I was there) with the Hoth and Tatooine waves, that had at least one of each figure from those waves.  Otherwise, it was just more of the Animated Clone Wars (Wave 1 only the way it looked).  At TRU, the basic figure selection was poor, consisting of mainly R-3POs, Bail Organas, and Ack Med-Beqs.  They did also have 3 each of Jabba and his Denizens, as well as 2 Wampas.  I also saw 2 of the new X-Wings on the shelves there, and several 12" figures collecting dust.  I saw a little boy of about 7 or 8 ask his mother for the X-Wing, only to be turned down.  Disappointing to see that, a child actually interested in Star Wars but unable to get it.  Otherwise, still no sightings of Yavin/Jabba's Palace/Star Destroyer waves around here really.

I've seen a lot of kids pick up those Animated Clone Wars figures. Too bad Target priced them at $7, because the kids get turned down all the time because they're "too expensive," to quote their parental units.

Yup.  I think the "Mom, can I?" ceiling is around $6 any ol' day, $10 birthdays.  $6-8 depending on the size/quality/value.  Those Turtles figs with the DVD's, every kid I see carries one of those around.

Kids look at SW (basic) but that's it.  Parents love LOTR, Spider-Man, and of course, Transformers.

It was one of the main reasons why I had to stop my One Open, One Carded collecting habits.

Most of my finds have been at TRU lately. I wonder if this dry spell has anything to do with Hasbro trying to concentrate on real toy stores (what's left of them) and not so much on Wal-mart and Target. I haven't seen much at either Target and especially Wal-Mart lately.

That's a good point HMI.  TRU has been getting somewhat regular shipments around here too from what I have seen, although they still have a lot of the Outlander Club wave collecting dust.  They have gotten Ultras of Jabba/Denizens/Wampa/Obi/Jango here and there, and I saw one Rappertunie there two weeks ago so they must have had the Jabba's Palace wave at one point.  Target has been the best place for me personally this year, although they haven't had anything past the Tatooine wave for quite some time now.  Wal-Mart has been a wasteland at every one I have been to.  All I have seen is Dignitaries, Outlander Club, and Ashla/Jempa repacks at three different stores.  That's ok with me, I'm not all that crazy about going to Wal-Mart anyways.
