Title: M.A.S.K.
Post by: Brian on July 24, 2007, 10:19 AM
I'm surprised there wasn't already a thread for this (or maybe I missed it), but I know we've talked about the M.A.S.K. collectibles in the past on these forums.  I think Scott has/had a pretty extensive collection of these as well.  Anyways, I remember being a big fan of the cartoon (however short lived), and the toys as well.  At the time, the pickup truck (with "Hondo" I believe) was my favorite, although I always wanted the Thunderhawk car.  Anyways, I see that WIZARD/ToyFare (http://www.wizarduniverse.com/magazine/toyfare/005265429.cfm) now has a little feature up on M.A.S.K., so it brought back some memories and I thought I'd post it here if anyone was interested.  I remember a few of those short-lived/less popular toons/toylines from my youth like M.A.S.K., Inhumanoids, Silver Hawks, being pretty good - even if they weren't on for a long time.

I loved the cartoon/toys as a kid.  I only had Phirana, Firefly (both lame) and the Thunderhawk which was pretty cool.  My brother had the Rhino which I would always "borrow" when I had the chance.  Loved the lil masks these guys had and all the the transformations/play features the vehicles had - such a great toyline.  I even remember that they had to tweek the styles of some of the masks back then do to choking hazards....Wow...toy issues back in the 80's...Good times.

I guess I was too involved with Transformers and Joes as a kid, but I went back and picked up every single vehicle/figure back in 02.  I never got into the laser/clone stuff so I left that stuff alone.

I can't remember all the names, but my faves were the Stinger, Slingshot, Razorback, Rhino, Bulldog, and the Outlaw.  I think I liked the semi trucks moreso because of Prime  :)

I know little of the toys, but I do have an issue or two of the old DC comic series.

I still have my Condor (the green motorcycle that turns into a helicopter) and I wish I still had my Raven. That was by far the coolest MASK of them all. I really loved that they did a Matt Trakker in the GI Joe 25th anniversary line. That was a really cool figure to pick up.

I never had any of the vehicles, but a friend did.  I watched the show.  I would buy the toys if they released them again. I picked up the 25th Ann GI Joe Trakker they released.

John, I've got some of the vintage ones that I'm selling, so if you're interested, look for my list on the MN Non-SW thread.  ;)

For my birthday last month my brother in law gave me his old original Matt Trakker and Thunderhawk which are in great condition!  He did let my nephew have it for a while but I convinced him that it would be in much better hands and live much longer if it somehow would end up in my possession. Good to know he was listening!

I had about 5 MASK toys when I was a kid.  My favorite is the Rhino.  A few years back I repurchased what I had as a kid and a lot of the ones I never had.

M.A.S.K. was one of my fave toy lines and cartoon in childhood.

After SW had kind of quitened down toys wise it was M.A.S.K. and Robotech toys that I collected/played with then.

Had the CONDOR bike,FIREFLY racing car and the large orange 4WD with Hondo Mclean too.

Good times....  ;D

The Orange pick-up was, to me, the best...  That thing was badass.  I treated them like Roadwarrior type cars...  They got pretty beat up because of that.

I really had hope for a relaunch when they released the updated Matt Trakker in the Joe line, but no dice.  Seems like a no-brainer to me.   :-\

The Orange pick-up (driver was Hondo or something I believe) was my favorite as well, and I played with that a lot as a kid.  It really was a pretty fun line back then, I was sort of hoping for a comeback too.  Nice collection Scott....cool to see them all like that.  I only had a few of them, but really liked the pickup (the top right orange on on your second picture). I remember looking forward to the cartoon as well, although I think it was only on like one season or something.

Orange Pick Up = Firecracker w/ driver Hondo MacLean

That's it...thanks, it was starting to bug me that I couldn't remember the name of the truck.

Some of them were kind of lame and didn't work too well...  My jeep never wanted to fire the little boat interior out of it for some reason.  I liked it as a jeep, but it just didn't work well.

I liked the Tanker truck too, as a central thing everyone was attacking, kind of like the end of the 2nd Road Warrior movie.

Hondo got his ass pitched to another vehicle and the guy wiith the red hat and mullet was the driver of the Firecracker then.

I don't even recall that rig without a trailer (not the Rhino, but the one without a hood).  I didn't have the Volcano either, and I don't think I had the mini-van either though my brother might have.

The rig was called Pitbull I believe and the driver was some Russian dude that I vaguely remember from the cartoon.  I picked most of these back up in 02-03 except for the last 2 waves.  Never could figure out how to get the Volcano to work/transform or whatever, but it's still cool as is the mini-van...can't think if its name at the moment, but thanks for posting the pic Scotty.  Brings back memories.   :)

Goddamn Scott, that collection is awesome. Do you have the Boulder Hill playset? That thing was, to childhood me, the most amazing toy of all time, trumping even the AT-AT for supremacy. Never had it, but it occupied my dreams for quite awhile...

The best!

Boulder Hill was pretty cool, but no way would I ever rank that above the vinty AT-AT. Still gotta pick that thing up someday though - and a minty Jackhammer that I can never seem to find/or find time to look for.

I have my orignal Boulder Hill at my folks house.  Its missing a few things but I do have it...I have been meaning to track down a super mint one but haven't do to space constraints

I will always remember getting that for Christmas 1985...probably my second favorite Christmas present ever behind the Falcon

They're actually not too bad on ebay. I don't think I'd ever get one at this point, but it's interesting to see that a MIB set can be found for under $100.

BoulderHill was indeed badass...  I can recall having the VENOM guys ram it with the Snake Oil tanker...  It was the only way to break into the fortress.  Very fun.

If I had one gripe about MASK it was that the figures didn't have, nor could they carry, guns.

The masks totally made up for that, IMO. I loved that line. I barely remember the cartoon, though I know I watched it regularly. That line was carried by the toys for sure.

Found a cool MASK site.  Helped me decide to fill in some of my missing sets.

http://www.albertpenello.com/mask/

Purchased a MASK Switchblade on eBay the other day.  Now I have to save up to buy a Boulder Hill, Meteor and Firecracker to finish off the first 3 series.

Then I need Stilhetto, Fireforce and a few other Split Seconds sets.  I bought Skybolt several years ago and that jet is very cool.

From that site I found a site selling some MASK repro labels.  May have to buy the Thunderhawk set.  Hopefully, some more coming soon too.

I still need to piece together some of the minor waves myself, but did you see that label kit that turns the Steel Crusher into the Jackhammer?  Brilliant!

That is an impressive collection.  The funny thing is, I have no memory of the cartoon or seeing the toy line in stores.

It must have dropped while I was still into GI Joe but maybe came just at the tail end of that, about the time I stopped hitting the toy aisle on a regular basis.

Love it!  That concept was ahead of its time.  With all the mainstream Superhero love these days, MASK could be a huge success for a toy line, new cartoon show, or even a movie franchise.  That flying Thunderbird and transforming Mac Truck were great concepts.  Never understood the baddie Switchblade chopper/plane though.  Here's a vehicle that converts from a clear bad guy flying vehicle to a ...different bad guy flying vehicle.   :-\

It would be great if they kept the design of the figures compatible with the vintage line.

I've been wanting to buy a nice MIB Boulder Hill for a while...knowing my wife would kill me has put a stop to that silliness.  For sure in the top 5 toy lines of my youth, lots of happy memories, lets hope they don't butcher it.

I've had a lot of "I need to sell this" going on in my head lately, and MASK was part of that.  My Starcom collection was next up.  And Battlebeasts which god, I love those things for no real reason I can explain besides "I like animals", and that's borderline toddler-like behavior on my part.
