Title: Correct scale Millenium Falcon WIP (pic heavy!) 10/15/11
Post by: rogue1 on March 7, 2008, 09:07 PM
Here's what I've got so far on a Millenium Falcon correctly scaled to the 3 3/4" figures.  First I did a foamcore prototype to nail down dimensions and locations:  I'm now beginning on the final plastic version using acrylic and styrene, with lighting also to be incorporated.  Comments/critiques welcome!

The foamcore prototype:

Early stages of final rear landing gear and cockpit, with a few detail pieces beginning to be added:

Wow! :o

That is really ambitious and looking great so far. Can't wait to see more progress.

Now that is an intense project! It is impressive enough to just use foam core but to then cast it is just insane. That will be an expensive project.

Thanks for the comments, guys!  I do think maybe there's a misconception. though.  The foamcore version is just a mock-up for reference.  The hard copy will be scratchbuilt, not cast from the foam;  and I'll be able to get nearly all of the acrylic for free, since my father owns the local lumber yard, and is always loaded with scraps.  Still, it will be expensive, but it'll literally take years to finish this, so it should be fairly spread out on costs.

I'm going to have to keep an eye on this thread. I really like where you are heading rogue. It looks as if you have done your research. I'm looking forward to seeing your WIP picures. :)

Keep the updates coming...  It's insanely cool, and something I've wanted to do but not had the balls to even consider starting.

What's the main structure made of though, if I may ask?  Plexi-glass?  And why'd you go with that, if I may ask?

I just love to see major undertakings. (http://smilies.vidahost.com/contrib/ruinkai/coolgleamA.gif)

I need to do a new one (haven't since '03) but the thought of the boredom that sets in about half way through seems to come to mind.  ::)

Keep up the Good Work !! (http://smilies.vidahost.com/otn/wink/thumb.gif)

Thanks for the comments, all, it's appreciated!  Jesse, it is indeed plexi-glass I'm using.  Why?  Well, it's failry durable and easy to work with, but fairly expensive. However since my family owns the local lumber yard, I've got access to tons of scrap stuff for free.  In the end it all comes down to simple economics (aka I'm a cheap @$#%)!

There's nothing wrong with that. :)

Just out of curiosity do you have an estimate of how much this beast is going to weigh (or at least how heavy it is now?)

Thanks Rogue1, I appreciate the reply...

I'm all for cheap...  Plexiglass is neat because sheets can be had for a fair price, and it's similar to plastic enough I think, that it "works" for customs to me.  I'm not fond of using wood, foam or other materials a toy isn't made of, and like seeing people build things using the materials a Hasbro would use...  Resin is about as non-toy as I go buliding stuff from scratch.

You can get sheets of ABS cheap if you can find a distributor near you...  For $60 I got two sheets that were so big I had to curl them to fit in a Dodge Dakota's bed.  For $60 that's outstanding value I think since it really gives you enough plastic you will be hard pressed to use it all.  I've still got one sheet of 1/8 thick sitting around that I never have even touched.  :)  Mostly because the thicker it is, the more of a b it is to work with though of course, haha.

Keep the updates coming Rogue...  Hang around the boards too if you want.  I like having a die-hard vehicle customizer around. :)

Are you going to tackle anything else done to-scale?  I'd like to get around to just about everything at some point or another, but time to work on customs is pretty much dead for me, so I just enjoy looking for now.

It's been a long time but Wow! Your making great progress. This is great to see such a project being built. You should take a picture with the original falcon and the BMF and this one together for a picture. Maybe include the vintage micro diacast one in the picture. Small/Medium/Large/X-Large.

Finally back at this project after too long a hiatus. I realized that before I attached all of the lower structures, I'd better do the detail work on the boarding ramp while it was still easily accessible. The pics aren't the greatest, but I hope to have better ones up in a few weeks when this section is completed.

Ramp is pretty much done now, except for a few more details. What I ended up doing was to make a "cradle" for this section to rest in while I got all of the angles, etc. worked out, as well as a temporary guide on the upper portion to make sure the pistons stayed plumb while the ramp was being raised or lowered. Everything is just dry-fit for now, with brad nails serving as hinge pins for the bottom of the ramp pistons.

For what it's worth, I like the ingenuity in the functional ramp design.  The magnet holding it in place and things.  I felt that was quite clever. :)  Hopefully your bandwidth is back at capacity rogue, and thanks for sharing with how you did that.

I like the temp scaffolding too by the way, haha.

Nice update Rogue...  Tell me you got the Millenium Falcon: An Owner's Guide!

I got it as a Christmas gift, and it's one of my favorite sourcebooks...  I saw it at NYTF last year and pics of it weren't allowed at the time for some reason, but it was insanely cool and I couldn't wait to get a copy.  It's great, and a must-have for your project.

For that picture where it looks like Han is reading a blueprint, you should put a couple little sawhorses in the backgrouond and add a hammer to his belt. :)

After getting all of the individual instrument panels made, I cast them in crystal clear, then used translucent paint for the buttons and lights.  This way, by using just clear LEDs, it gives the appearance of multiple bulbs.  Below are a few shots of the panels before casting:

Great stuff as always man. I really like seeing this ship grow with each update. I love the ammount of detail you are putting into every little corner of the ship. Good luck casting the landing gear. I'll be interested to see how much your pressure pot helps. As always I can't wait for the next update!

How did you do the floor panels in the Falcon? I've been looking for a cheap and efficient way of making floors like that for awhile now.

The production still you posted shows that ribbed hose running up along side the bench seat.  I don't know if it would quite be the right scale, but you might try using a guitar string to replicate that hose.

This is fantastic work.  Keep it up!

I'm a fan of this project of rogue1's.  Even when I was a 7 year old kid playing with my Kenner Millenium Falcon, I knew that the scale was just wrong compared to the action figures.  I dreamed of having a Falcon that was TRUE-scale to the 3 3/4" heroes.

It's been at least 3 year's time since there have been any new photos / updates to this thread.  Does ANYONE know if rogue1 is still working on this project OR if he has since completed it?  I would be very grateful to see even MORE pix of this project & what kind of progress he's (she's?) made since the last posted photos.

Or has there been a new / more up-to-date post string added that continues from this one?

No clue honestly.  I've not kept up with it.  I liked his project too, but customizing projects are just something I don't watch much any longer.  I kinda went off on my own direction with customizing and lost interest in the overall community after a while (started getting a little chippier, bitchier, etc.).

I love any scaled ship being done though.  I appreciate guys who are picky with that stuff.  :-X

Jesse James,

Thank you for the reply!

By "chippier", do you mean some people in the customizing community have a chip on their shoulders?

In any case, I hope rogue1 resurfaces.  Would be nice to know how he / she is doing.

More that they are generally not as hospitable as when I joined them back in the old FFURG listserver days.  It's gone from less a community to more a place where criticism isn't appreciated, discussion is limited, and most are out to make a buck in profit off the hobby rather than share knowledge and expand customizing.

At Celebration III we (FFURG) put on a great basic customizing tutorial/display... It wasn't just diorama'ing and all that stuff, it was actual boil/popping, building, painting...  It was hands-on, it was active.  It had interest from Hasbro's reps, it had interest from fans of all ages, it had interest from celebrity guests.  It was really fun, and embodied getting knowledge out there about this niche within the hobby.

Now...  It's more about showing things off and expecting praise, an inability to take anything but, and a lack of desire to share techniques I've noticed.  I see this in other customizing too, like G.I. Joe.  A lot of "secretive" guys come out.  I've seen some outright lie about how easily things can be done because they want people to not try it themselves (since they sell it).  It was disappointing to see, and I dropped out mostly because of that stuff.  I make things for myself, not for Ebay.

Now that STAR WARS Episode VII: "The Force Awakens" is out in theaters, I am once again wondering how this project is going.  Always wanted to see a Falcon to scale with the 3 3/4" figures we've known since childhood.

Would love to hear from Rogue 1 if he's still around at all.
