is there more than one bespin guard?
-
There are 2 different versions of the Bespin Guard. One is from the POTJ carded figure and one is from the Carbon Freeze Chamber. I believe that the Carbon Freeze Chamber guard is "black".
-
so there was only one standard bespin guard issued on the potj card then?
-
Yes
-
Judging by the photo on the packaging, I'm pretty sure this guy is not black...

I will update when I find out for sure. Brian's Toys (which provides the image above) has the same image link for both 'loose' Bespin Security Guards.

Big Oops!! What was I thinking? There is a Vintage "Black" Bespin Guard, not POTJ. One again, sorry. :-X ::)
-
The Freeze Chamber Guard, I can confirm, is not black... He actually strongly resembles David Duchovney from the X-Files.
He's cobbled together from parts of other figures... His body for instance is that of Darth Sidious. His arms are that of the Complete Galaxy and Target Skiff Luke's (Even has the poseable right hand).
His head's the only new part. It's a single piece sculpt so the hat's not removeable like the POTJ figure.
Oddly enough, the POTJ figure's got an open jacket which if I remember correctly, NONE of the Bespin Guards in the film had opened jackets.
Just a strange mix-up on Hasbro's part I guess.
There have been rumors of head variant POTJ Bespin Guards that were on tap but never produced. I'd take a 4 pack of unique head POTJ Bespin Guards though... That's one of Hasbro's better figures IMO.
-
THe Bespin Guard does seem like a suitable candidate for head variations. I'll keep my fingers crossed for that one.
-
Indeed, and it was a strong rumor at one point (Never solidified by a site, just strong rumor).
I'd take a black guy and white guy gladly... Even the Asian with the mustache to fill out the vintage lineup.
-
Wasn't the one with the 'stache Hispanic?
I just got the POTJ one, and I'm really impressed. Excellent sculpt and detail. And 4 accessories? Fantastic! Each one goes on the belt and everything; removable hat; 2 elbow joints instead of the one you might expect from figures made at that time. Love this figure.
The pack-in on the other hand, judging by online pics, is a complete turd.
-
The Force File you mean Ook?
I liked the FF's myself... They're a unique little thing to have a complete set of I think. Kinda like the Freeze Frames.
Lots of weird EU information and pictures... Kinda neat, but simplistic.
Definitely one of the better figures of the line... not sure on the vinty figure. Since I was a kid I always thought he was asian, but by the card's photo I can't really tell myself.
-
Yeah, the POTJ one with the Force File. That was the only single-carded one, right?
-
Yeah, I was wondering what you meant by the pack-in though was what I meant.
There's only one Bguard though, yeah. The other's the kitbash in the playset... Well, the head's new, but it's a kitbash otherwise.
-
Oh. That figure is what I meant by pack-in. The one packed in with the carbon freeze playset. That fig looks terrible.
-
Ah ok... I thought you meant the forcefile pack-in that CAME with the Bespin Guard. :) Very confusing.
Oh the pack-in with the Carbon Freeze set... Yeah, while I kinda dig the headsculpt, the figure is nasty... I wouldn't say it's the worst thing I've ever seen though. I think the X-Wing pilot pack-ins are worse for instance.
I'd put him above those. I'd put him above some of the figures in some of the 4-packs lately... Still not a good figure though, haha.

The Bespin Guard pack-in from the Carbon Chamber is really pretty crappy, specially when standing beside the POTJ Bespin Guard. I, too, wish they'd make at least one more Guard (closed vest) with a few head variants and even better articulation.

It would also be nice to have one with better posture.
-
Yeah, the posture is wierd, it works great for this figure, but not great for army building. Very under rated figure though. One of my favorates from that line.
-
I don't know why they just didn't use a repainted version of the carded figure for the Freezing Chamber Guard. It seems like that would have saved money on Hasbro's part and given us a better looking figure.
-
True true ;D
-
I think wagaboodles is saying he wanted the POTJ figure repainted for the Bespin Playset rather than the reversal, I could be wrong though.
I too wasn't ever a fan of the Bespin Guard's awkward posture. It was a sign of highly negative things to come in 2002 - 2003 with really pre-posed figures. The BG's not TOO pre-posed, but that lean is dumb. Two figures that had a similar asinine pose were the Outlander Duo of Faytonni and Beq. They look like **** IMO, despite pretty great articulation. If the torso's were normal, that'd be a figure I'd have actually army built with to make republic Officers.
The other problem with the Bespin Guard beyond his lean is his vest is open. No guard looked like that in the films, so it's weird. I don't even know what promo shot or LFL image they used to base the figure off of then really.
I'd actually dig a new Bespin Guard, if Hasbro even re-used the arms, hat, and weapons on it or something, that'd be cool, just sculpt a new body (no coat open), and maybe some new (and perhaps better?) legs, and that'd be a pretty perfect figure for me. Be great if they did the Black and Asian chaps from the vintage line... A white guy variant wouldn't hurt either to me. Given the BG's track record though I dont' think they'll go with that.
-
I would dig a new more movie accurate Bespin Guard. I think Hasbro did a cool think when they offered the Saga Endor Trooper, Rebel Fleet Trooper, and Imperial Officer with different heads, so that would be a must for a new BG. And I always like to see articulation on figures, the more the marrier. Can Hasbro say Super-Artculation? Really all new figure need that treatment, but troop builder types are a must period IMO.

I say hell yeah to a new guard, especially a black guard like the old days.
BTW, can somebody give me the URL for lighting the Carbon freeze chamber?
-
I consider, this carded Bespin guard got a nice configuration, enough tall, slim, young looking and with decent articulation.
The accesories of this action figure make sense with the depiction of the character.
