Title: The Minor Upgrades You'd Actually Like To See
Post by: Jesse James on November 10, 2010, 09:24 PM
I was thinking of figures that I'd like to see get minor upgrades (major would be cool too, if done well, but minor upgrades to already pretty good figures is what I'm thinking).  What are the figures you'd like to see get these minor tweaks?  Like, as an example, Stormtroopers getting the ball-jointed hips and coming with maybe a new E-11 and rifle like we're going to get...

I'm into that figure, just not his utterly shite helmet and rifle.  If the helmet and rifle are better than initial pictures, I kinda dig that figure a lot, actually.

My first figure...  Commander Bly.

We've gotten a version or two of Bly, but none have been quite perfect...  They're neat, but I'd gladly take a new one using the ball-jointed hips Clone, maybe a cloth kama, and god-willing a completely accurate paintjob.  Not major tweaks there, as all that pretty much exists.  The only thing new would probably be a removable helmet and possibly a headsculpt (perhaps one that matches his CLone Wars animated headsculpt's look somewhat).  I like the removable helmets, so I'm biased there, but I know CHEWIE doesn't dig them, so I sort of left it off as a major upgrade.  I suspect it would happen though.

I'd live without Bly getting redone though, is my point.  But it's the kind of tweaks that would make me happily rebuy him too.

This is probably the direction Hasbro will go, with many figures, I believe.  The precedent is obviously there...  Taking something that exists, and doing a little bit to it to make it "better".  I think it's a big part of the realistic line's future.  Hell, it's already in the Clone Wars line even.

One that comes time mind right off the bat is the Tusken Raiders elbow joints - other than that I am really happy with the figure.  VOTC Lando has the same issue too.

I love the evolutions Maul, but that ************ needs some ball joint elbows.

What are the figures you'd like to see get these minor tweaks?

- VOTC Han Solo with a gun holster that actually attaches to his leg (like Bespin Luke got)
- Shield Generator Assault BP Han Solo with a new torso (the joint is so ugly) and holster (see above) and the Endor Trenchcoat

VOTC Yoda with new head
VOTC Leia with new head and elbows
BAD C-3PO
Vintage Repaints

JJ, great topic choice!

Bespin Lando (New Head, Ball jointed arms)
Imperial Officer (Sanning Crew Repaint, heck use the alternate head to boot!)
BAD Protocol R-3P0 repaint (Make color closer to Saga version)
Yavin Ceremony Luke (New Head, better flesh tone and correct gun)
ANH Leai (New head sculpt)
Hobbie Hoth Pilot (Adjust ecliptic Head to fit SS pilot body)
Bespin Guards New Heads - Foomanchoo, white guy w/edian and the Black Bespin Guard with stash that greet Falcon
Screaming Tin Chewbacca in normal colors (Non snow paint).
Quinlan Vos (Faie version) Robed arms & SA legs
Garindan SA legs and Ball jointed arms

VOTC Leia with new head and elbows

FYI - You can be halfway there already, the Medical frigate Leia has the SA arms, its 100% the same just swap heads with the VOTC Leia head/hands and you can upgrade her right now.

I think this thread is proof the hobby's got life. :)

My next choices, and ones I almost debated doing first for the post, were Jeff's Han Solo choices (in particular for me, the VOTC Han, though I 100% agree on Endor Han as well).

To keep that theme going then...

-VTSC Han Hoth...  Balljointed hips, a cloth "skirt", and the holster tied to the hip.  I want a Han made to ride Taun-Tauns, but rocking the new sculpt.  VTSC Hoth Han's one of my favorite Han figures, but to do what Han does in the films, he needs a bit more.

I know on Leia, the current head sucks though...which is why we need a new one

Agreed. I like the sculpt on the medical frigate Leia, at least it looks like Carrie.

Damn right!
This kind of topic is what use to fill the boards everywhere instead of the doom/gloom. This is the kind of thread that I always enjoyed and these types of refreshes I openly welcome.

Call me crazy, but I'd love to get a Hammerhead with more arm articulation and ball joint knees (to sit down in the cantina). Obviously not a huge deal, but it would be cool.

Evolutions Darth Sidious with ROTJ head and better robes would be great as well.

McQuarrie Fett with ankle joints

I agree with Scott on the BAD-style C-3PO

Count me in and call me crazy too. Also, do a variant in Vintage Blue. Call me crazy for thinking a running change is possible...

I agree with the previous comments about Votc Han, I need a good core version of Han and Leia, Bespin Luke will fill my need on him. Can any of the Chewies sit down? Maybe one with ball joints everywhere. A soft goods Bespin gown Leia? (I always wondered when and why they gave her a chance to change back into the hoth outfit).

I 100% agree on Hammerhead...  As a matter of fact, I was criticized, for actually criticizing, the last Hammerhead.

Is he a cool sculpt?  No doubt.

Is he a good Cantina alien though?  Since he was sitting, I say no.  And to be honest I think knees should've been given whether sitting or standing simply because he's an "action" figure, implying that he's poseable, and blah blah blah. :)

But Hammerhead I'm all for a retool.

On Scott's point, I'm all-in on a new Leia headsculpt and arms...  VOTC Leia lacked.  She was cool at the time somewhat, but who wouldn't dig better poseable arms and a better likeness on her?  She spends all of ANH in that one outfit pretty much.  She's running around like a jackwagon shooting everyone in sight.  She's a badass bitch!

And she's got a sub-par figure to show for it.

Ceremoney Luke is a great one too...  I liked what Hasbro wasaiming for in 2007.  The figure's so close, but so far.  I'd probably be content just to get him with the color skin that makes him look reasonably healthy.  A new headsculpt wouldn't hurt either though.

How long have we gotten AOTC style Clones now, but not ones with removable helmets and ball-jointed hips, in the basic line?  Much less repaints to the various officers?  I'm in on buying those.  Maybe not in the mass bulk I used to, but I would buy a red, yellow, blue, green, and some plain white versions that had all those upgrades.

Here's a thought...  And it's obscurity.

The Mon Calamari Officer...  Now that Ackbar got an update, do you care to see that guy get a repaint of Ackbar, rocking the Keds of course, and the helmet?  I'd buy him.  He's stretching things a bit, but again this is a figure with little investment, to turn out something new.  I'd buy him.

And if the last Prune Face doesn't yield us an all-new Prune face by slapping an eyepatch on him, then Hasbro can eat a Green Weenie.

I'd like to see a Hoth Trooper, preferably beardless, or maybe with an entirely new head, with a "goggles up" hat with no scarf.

Greg, I just noticed that this last post put your posts total at 1138 (nerd-alert for me noticing).

Anyways, I would really like a 2 pack of Jawas, using any of the recent sculpts that have been put out. I really need more of those guys. That's really only a packaging change though.

We could also use a ROTS Chewie of the same caliber of the recent Chewbacca figures. From what I can tell, we just need a smoother fur headsculpt and possibly a few highlights on the fur itself. Obviously Chewie hasn't been able to find a proper salon and colorist since he left Kashyyk.

I'm not sure if anyone mentioned this, but Skiff guard Lando would definitely benefit from balljointed legs and arms. The sculpt is great, but the poseability is sub-par.

While I'm on it, there's a few figures from that era that could use added articulation while keeping their design (Bib Fortuna and Boussh Leia come to mind).

I have to say though, my biggest wish for an upgrade is in the plastic itself. My Super Battle Droids, Battle Droids and General Grievous fall over all the time. It's so ridiculous that I'm genuinely surprised to walk into my office and not see them in fallen domino formation. I'm actually considering building an armature for Grievous to keep him upright.

Man, you hit this one on the head. I'd have bought MORE BDs and SBDs if the plastic was stiffer.

One upgrade I'd like however is a DOWNGRADE in price. It's ridiculous that the Vintage figures are priced $10.

Less bubble, less accessories. No pack-in feature like the Build A Droid parts. Plain and simple there is NO reason we should be paying a few bucks more for these than the Animated figures.

I think one character could make the list/criteria for this thread the most...

Lando.

-VOTC Lando could use ball-jointed elbows, and a removable cape feature.  Also a clip-on wrist cell phone.

-Skiff Guard Lando could use knees, ankles...  I could see him sporting ball-jointed hips too, as he's pretty action-y.

-General Lando could use knees, ankles, and his other arm articulated, plus a cloth cape.

That's three Lando figures that could all use minor tweaks/upgrades to make "new" figures, and I'd gladlly buy any of them.  One's coming along I guess, but Lando sorta got hosed as a character.

OTC Lobot - needs articulated legs
VTSC Sand People - needs ball jointed elbows
POTF2 2-1B - needs articulated arms/wrists

All Jedi figures would come super articulated (absolutely no swivel jointed elbows) with softgood skirt pieces.
Title: Re: The Minor Upgrades You'd Actually Like To See
Post by: Jesse James on November 12, 2010, 11:58 PM
I think 2-1B almost needs a new figure though.  At least I can't see Hasbro going back to the POTF2 figure and just giving him new arms/legs...  which I'd totally be into.  I thought the POTF2 figure was great.  They seemingly are abandoning the truly old stuff though.

That's two votes for the Sandperson now, and I agree...  I love the Vinty one, no doubt, but ball-jointed arms and I'd probably buy 6 more of him to add to the 20 or so I have of the vintage figure.  I just love that sculpt.

OTC Lobot crossed my mind too, Jayson, when I was writing the Lando's post.  It made me question hasbro going back to a guy who's insanely boring, but I'd rebuy him with articulated legs.  Even leaving the arms as-is, I'd still rebuy for some poseable running/disco action.

I agree on the Jedi, Matt.  It's a matter of getting Hasbro to upgrade many, many Jedi though. :)

Jedi, like army builders, should be super articulated figures in my opinion.  No skimping, all ball-jointed.  Hasbro proved even the torso looks great on Jedi because of the robes.  I like when they have the hip articulation too.  It adds a lot to such acrobatic characters.

I'd like to see it more often on other army builders too though...  Not just armored guys, but expanded.  I can live without it, but it's nice to have.  It adds to realistic posing, for sure.  The best way to get a character tos it naturally, and to kneel...  kneeling's not an easy pose to pull off on a lot of figures.

I'd like to see the battle droid two pack ROTS style with a pilot and security droid. If they can make those arms swivel for a two handed blaster grip it would be a plus.

Repaints on the battledroid 2-pack would be nice.  I'd personally like to see it as just plain tan ones too...  then tan/commander...  then pilot/security.  A double plain red would be nice too.

I've only seen the current pack twice though, so I doubt I'd have much luck seeing those other proposed ones often.

I'd honestly be down for a Grievous with two arms, that didn't separate. The new Vinty one is cool and all, but you can't do anything with him when the arms are connected. Maybe modify the sculpt so you can pose him hunching over.

Oh, and Blue Jango too.

Well...  yeah, it would add to the duplex I guess.

I'm pretty sure Virex killed off the Duplex and told us all to get lives and move on...

I would be down for that Grievous too...and I'll have to repeat, sturdier plastic.

I'd also like to see a VOTC syle Han with the new ball jointed hips ala Bespin Luke and ROTJ Luke.

Totally with you on this one Jesse.

I want to build up my BD army even more. The 2-pcaks you mentioned would be very welcome. More Reds for sure and I like the Security/Pilot idea too. I don't need too many of them, so getting them together would be excellent, then I can go nuts on the tan sets and red sets without having unwanted duplicates of the security or pilot BDs.

I'd love to finally see a SA Asajj Ventress, full-out. Hasbro came so close in the CP release.

Also, a SA Quinlan Vos, in the outfit from the '07 CP.

SA ANH Leia, with ball-jointed elbows, as well.

Just thought of him...

Training Clone Trooper.

Ditch those completely stupid lower legs, please.  Why on earth did they sculpt those ankles posed like that?

And some ball-jointed arms wouldn't hurt.

And a blue deco of him wouldn't hurt either.

And if they're feeling really sassy, include removable realistic style CLone Training armor like the recent Clone Wars episode had, with the open-faced helmets.  That'd be kind of slick, even if it was just to set beside him like he's getting ready to train or something.

I think there needs to be a new ANH Tatooine Luke, or at least the one from the Resurgence of the Jedi Battle Pack needs an individual carded release.

As an upgrade to the TSC release, with the poncho, hat, and lightsaber? Yes, please! They could reuse the 'Luke - Farmboy' cardback used in the VOTC.

The DS Escape cuts it close, but the Stormtrooper belt annoys me.

He's one of those ones that makes sense I think, on a TVC card...

Luke I'd like to see too, but I agree that it's really just to see the Farmboy LUke available on a basic card using the new sculpt.

Ideally, he'd have the chest from Obi-Wan's, a the hat, the rifle, the macrobinoculars...  a training remote would be wishful thinking too, as an accessory, but I figure if they did the Thermal Detonator for Leia, they can do Luke's training remote.

I'd like to see a better Endor Leia that can be easily repurposed as a rebel General Leia. The one from a few years ago was decent, but I'd like to see ball jointed arms and a better belt for under the poncho.

I would also love to see the Endor trooper rereleased with a soft goods vest instead of the trenchcoat, as well as a new head with no ******* goatee.

I'm not sure how it was for you guys, but the recent slave Leia was pretty impossible to find. I never saw her in stores, but luckily managed to get one from Hasbrotoyshop...then she disappeared. It would be great to see a rerelease of this on a vintage card. Possibly with a chain?

She's one of those ones, like a Tarkin, Fleet Trooper, Wedge, etc., that I think people anlmost universally would like to see on a vintage card simply because it never happened in the original line but "should have" to many.

There are this handful of figures that people inevitably customized when I was young and the modern line didn't exist...  Slave Leia was the advanced effort, but she was one a lot of people tried.  Fleet Trooper, Capt. Antilles, Wedge, Dak, Different colored astromechs, Stormie Han, Imperial Scanner technicians, Black DS Troopers, Grey Imperial Officers, Tarkin (using the one Black Hole figure's head was quite popular on this), Rem. Helmet Vader, Hoth Rebels in white, Hangar Tech Rebels, and a variety of Cantina guys like Bom Vimdin, Dr. E., Wuher, Yerka Mig, Tonnika's, etc.

There was just this list of figures that people would often try before the modern line came out...  The more complex the less tried them, but figures like rem. helmet Vader were where I learned how to use my dremel to hollow parts out, haha.  Lots of Slave Leia's tried...  Not so many looked great, but some were really impressive by those who could sculpt.

vtsc Luke Pilot needs an update: better torso definition, longer legs; he could reach the height of tvc Jedi Luke (Endor Capture), another head sculpt for him would be great. Hasbro must soften his pointy chin.

If they want to sell this in a single carded will be nice: UBP Luke pilot from Hoth, with corrected lightsaber and shin guards on his boots.

-Correct tac16 Vader with Obi cloak, replace his head for Shaw´s.
-Do a new slave Leia based on tlc (this figure is cool) but could be improved with thiner shoulders (is like tlc Endor capture Luke torso and shoulders corrected a bit slimmer from 2009 to 2010). This leia update would be ok with longer legs.

Post by: DoctorPadawan on February 27, 2011, 01:04 PM
Didn't know which thread to put this in, but it should fit here well enough...

The minor upgrade I'd like to see is for all current and future Clone helmets to be molded in plastic that isn't immediately yellow or green when it's not supposed to be.  The plain ROTS white Clone helmets being yellow could have been chalked up to a "bad batch" or something, but for this to be continuing on both the 212th Clone and the "new" Stormtrooper is ridiculous, especially with the price increases and the supposed "highest quality" tag that the Vintage Collection carries.

The 212th Clone is my favorite color scheme/design from ROTS, and I'd have happily bought several of the figure instead of just one had the helmet not looked so bad.  I wonder if Hasbro will have this fixed on the (apparently now shipping) AOTC-era Clone or the upcoming 501st Legion Clone, or if we'll continue to have the "Accidental Green" Clone squadron in the coming months.

This, to me, should be standard if the figure is $4.99 or $10.99 and Hasbro shouldn't accept this for this many separate waves of figures...  It's gone on long enough I cannot imagine any reasonable scenario where they just weren't aware...  It's certainly a major quality control issue.

My only guess is they're using cheaper materials, though it's rare plastic deteorates this fast on anything, so I question if it's even actual deteoration, or if the plastic itself is this color and it's not pure white.  I can't even think of it happening this fast on knock-off toys and such.
