Title: Women's Day Space Station – Complete!
Post by: Deanpaul on April 6, 2005, 07:48 PM
Anyone ever think of building one of these, or something like one of these?

EDIT: I didn't really think about it when I made this post, but I should have noted that this image came from the Toys R Gus site, linked below. It wasn't my intention to leave this uncredited. If there are any objections from any side involved, I'll gladly remove the link. Just realized this, sorry.

Women's Day Space Station (http://www.toysrgus.com/images-speci/womansday/index.html)

I remember seeing that magazine as a six year old. We kept the magazine around for years, we even ordered the plans.

My dad didn't have a jig saw, or the ability to work with the acrylic, so he kept putting off making an attempt. At some point, my grandfather made something similar that became the foundation for all my SW ship landing needs.

Now I've got kids, and I'm wondering about making something like this that would give a "neutral" place (vs. a specific diorama location like Hoth, Dagobah, etc.) for all the ships and characters from both trilogies to have adventures.

So, what have you done or thought about doing along these lines?

It's called a shelf, and an immagination, lol.

Kevin

P.S. I see that you have again procrastinated answering my question. :-*

I've always thought that looked very cool, and it reminded me more of Cloud City than anything else.

Someday I would love to be able to make something like that for a Coruscant playset.

When I was 7 or 8 back in 1981 my mother made me the Hoth playset from the later, Empire Strikes Back issue of Woman's Day.  It was awesome but after a little while the styrofoam deteriorated so I made a larger version from the denser, blue type of styrofoam and I played with that for years.  Now that I think of it was probably my first "custom".  I should see if my parents ever took any pictures of either one.  Owen D

Welcome Owen!

It's cool that your mom made you that.  Very, very cool.  If you have any pics of either one, it would be very cool to see them.

Have you ever considered making any custom playsets Owen?

Hey Owen, welcome to Jedi Defender!

I saw pictures of those later playsets at toysrgus - they looked really cool. If my mom ever got that issue I never knew it - I probably would have driven her nuts over it until she made me one!

Welcome to JD, Owen!  Glad to have you swing on by to check us out...

As for the Space Station there, I've got that magazine floating around somewhere at home, or in storage, with the rest of the SW magazine collection.  What sucks, is that I don't recall ever seeing that when I was a kid, even though I'm sure my mom subscribed to, or bought, that magazine all the time.  But I caught that article years later, and was quite intrigued by it.  Wish I'd seen it as a lil' tike though, 'cause I'm sure I could've coerced my entire family into helping me build it, or something rather close to it.  Man, all the kids in the neighborhood would've been jealous!  Kinda reminds me of the city in Logan's Run, actually.

As it stands, it's still a very cool nostalgic article to add to the collection.  Definitely gets the kid's imagination flowing in me again, that's for sure!  Thanks for the memorable flashback there, Dp.  8)

This is a real trip down memory lane.

I'm mostly starting the new project with materials. I like some of the areas in the Women's Day piece, but a straight execution of the design won't give me enough area for some of the bigger ships - playsets and some smaller ships can always go on a more neutral shelf in the room.

So far I've got a 4'x4' sheet of 1/2 cast acryilc, some white high gloss plastic laminate and 10 guage cold rolled steel. I like that the city is all white, but I'd like to introduce some texture to the environment as well. Access to wood and other materials won't be a problem, it's the more unusual stuff I want to experiment with. I've been using high density foam (like strux) in some work related projects, and I'm curious about introducing some more organic shapes into this, but it needs to be bullet-proof for the kid play.

I thought the acrylic could bee cool if I had it CNC'd into landing platforms shaped like the ones in the AOTC the opening scene on Coursecant. You could see through them to another "hanger" area below like where the Jedi starships were. That level could have a metal floor and be a darker, lower level of the city.

LED lighting could also be neat to incorporate into the floor or around the landing platform edges like on Bespin or Kamino.

I think the white P-Lam will be nice and futuristic clean, especially if it can be lit so it's a little reflective. Need to look at durability though, this will be played with by the kids so it cannot scratch too easily. There's always been something nice about the Tantive IV.

I'd like to find some good tubing to accessorize the areas, like we saw on Yavin and Hoth.

Here's the weekend update:

I've downloaded all of the plans, and while the Women's Day Space Station holds a lot of nostagia, it is a poor use of 15 square feet for my purpose.

I laid out the original floor plan just to see how it scaled to our playroom and vehicles. It's 36"x60", and I'll probably increase it to 3 levels of stacking structure instead of two. I'll nix things like the solar energy station and the moving walkway because of space and complexity.

Here is a rough of the unadjusted magazine floor plan, not showing levels:

With vehicles for scale:

Additionally, here are a few images of the space station my grandfather built me when I was 7 or 8. At the time, I didn't realize how much he based it on the Women's Day plans my parents had ordered. It's interesting now to compare the two and the descisions he made to simplify their design.

I'm still working on adjustments to the floorplan - trying to layout maximum space for ships and figures. I want to keep some of the kitch from the original, like the weather station and maybe the monorail, and add in space for gathering like an Outlander Club or Cantina. Then I'll move into elevation studies - I'd like an integrated base that could hold storage bins, and some way for the AT-AT to open the side door as a ramp to load/unload.

More later.

Whoa man!  What did your grandfather make it out of (what materials)?

This is really a cool thread.... your grandfather did a great job.  Very cool of him to make something like that for you.

I am truly inspired by this thread.... I think I might need to make something like this.... could do several different movie themes for it!

Thanks Chewie.

It has held up really well over the years with play and non-climate controlled storage. It must have sat in a humid/freeze garage cycle for 15 years.

It's made out of plywood, primed and painted. You can easily see some of the wood grain through the paint, so I expect it wasn’t that high of a grade plywood, especially since he knew it would be sealed and painted. The lines are vinyl sign tape, just like the Women's Day magazine suggests. They mostly cover any edge or end grain, but there are a few places that it looks like he puttied edges before painting.

The overall dimension is 24"x36"x8". 8" high is the minimum for most vehicle clearance, like the DV TIE. It works out great for snowspeeders, X-wings and Y-wings. The B-wing is so big it mostly lands on the top deck.

The bottom is 1/2" plywood, the side walls are 3/8" and the top is 1/4". The 1/4" top has held up well, and I need to look at how thin I can make parts of the new project so this thing won't weigh any more than it has to.

I'm already thinking integrated base and locking castors, as well as how this thing will break down for inevitable storage periods.

EDIT: One more thing, it's all nailed together. Sure he used glue, but this was before pneumatic nail guns and cordless screw guns. And those holes in the back? I'm not sure he had a router in 1979. This thing was truly a labor of love.

Man, that is the truth. I've been thinking about him a lot lately as I look at starting this. I really miss him, it's been 13 years since he died. I'd love to ask him questions about this, or even make this with him. He was so good to me. I'll tell you a cool story another time.

:P

The stairs are one of my favorite parts. I always wondered what was under them as a kid, there is air space below the upper portion.

One nice thing about his was that it didn't cross the line into "doll house" the way the living quarters section of the Women's Day plan does. My daughter plays SW stuff with my son, so I'll probably make some concession there, but not nearly the amount of space or fru-fru they did. Maybe a Stormtrooper barracks?

My grandpa passed away just last year, and I'm still missing him very much (despite the fact he never built me a cool SW set like that  ;)).  Grandpas really do rule.

Yep, Grandpas are the best.  My mother's dad passed away in 1984 so I never really got to know him.  I am fortunate that at 87 years old, my father's dad is still alive and doing quite well.  Spend as much time with them as you can - the older you get, the more you seem to realize how precious their lives are.

Yeah Dean Paul - a Stormtrooper barracks would be pretty sweet.  Maybe even a cafeteria.   :)

I live with my Granpa, and I'm very blessed to be here. I'm glad he's still alive too. He made me a set of swords and sheilds for a skit I did in a school play once. He buys me all my shelving material for my dioramas, it's his way of indirectly hinting I should buy new figures. :)

I've moved into elevation studies.

Originally, I wanted a lot of space for ships to land - I saw a lot of landing platforms. Well, it became ALL landing space, so I carved it up a little more and added some of the "people" areas from the original. I also added the monorail back into the design, because it lost the nostalgia without it.

I need to add some details and refine some of the supports and connections. More later.

Thanks Kevin.

I'm not sure what you mean by "code". I used an application called FormZ (http://www.formz.com/) to create the images posted above.

It's really great for architectural and form studies. I use it professionally, so I'm pretty fast at generating an image if I have the design clear in my head.

I'm not sure about the circle shaped openings. They were in the original and also in my grandfather's version, but I may move to more of a Death Star blast shield door opening or Tantive IV hallway opening. Not sure, so I'll try a few options and share them when they're done.

Thanks again.

Just a thought, but how about reducing the base area (if that was a concern) by making it three levels high instead of two.  Also, why not run the monorail from the base to the upper level, it might emphasize the playsets elevation and the monorail itself.  Just throwing some ideas out there, Owen D

D'oh!
I went back and looked at those pics and I guess it is 3 levels high, I guess I meant it might be interesting to make the third levels close to other levels in size.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

This thing is bigger than it looks in the renderings - I keep going back to where I taped out the floor to see how a ship will fit on a certain platform and what kind of clearance different ground vehicles need.

One thing I am worried about is how my son will be able to reach parts of the station interior. I'd rather he not climb onto it - the levels will need to be bullet proof as it is.

Just a thought, but how about reducing the base area (if that was a concern) by making it three levels high instead of two.  Also, why not run the monorail from the base to the upper level, it might emphasize the playsets elevation and the monorail itself.  Just throwing some ideas out there, Owen D

It's kind-of three levels - but the third is pretty minimal. Only the upper monorail station has a third floor. BTW - those are elevator cars in between the arched monorail supports - that's another play feature I kept from the original, except I put it on both sides.

I'm planning to have a base for it that has openings for storage containers. I'd like the height of what looks like the ground level here to be about the height of the AT-AT door off the floor. That way, the Imperials can walk up and unload troops into the city, and I have extra room to store all the parts and pieces that are out of play rotation.

I tried having the monorail end at the ground level, but the angle of the rail cut into too much of one of the platforms. I was also worried about my son getting carried away with gravity and the car if the slope was too great.

Also, I have to say that I feel pretty stupid and out of my league after seeing your 3D design Dean Paul.

BTW - what's the blue tube thing?  A transport device or something?

I've been doing environmental design for 10 years now. I studied theater design and industrial design at two different universities, and I'm starting to hit a professional stride as a trade show / retail / museum interpretive designer. I've been using FormZ since 1997, so I'm pretty familiar with it.

It's based on the monorail from the Women's Day magazine. The blue tube will be two 1/8" wall thickness half spheres with a 6" cylinder between them - like a Tylenol capsule. It's got a side opening and a floor - I'm thinking about making some benches for the inside of it so figures can sit down like on the subway or a tram.

Deanpaul is one word. I wasn't aware of this either till 2 weeks ago.

Thanks Kevin. No worries about the name. I've seen/heard it all. The internet is weird when it comes to user names and spelling anyway, but Deanpaul is actually my real world name.

Wow. Those renderings are very cool.  In fact, they remind me of the Death Star  in an early McQuarrie--the one with the Stormtroopers carrying the shields and the lightsabers.

Pehaps you could look at some of that McQuarrie art and make a "concept" playset!

Keep up the great work.

So, it's been some time since I did anything with this project, but I've been working on the lay out for about a week now.

I've got a parts sheet to a friend who runs a CNC to see if he can get them cut out before the weekend. If he can I'll be able to finish this in time for Christmas for my son Leif.

The monorail transport is giving me the most trouble. Finding a 4"d hollow hemisphere with .125 wall thickness has been impossible. I've tried local plastics suppliers and the net. I asked for between 4"o.d. and 6"o.d. and no one carries anything that small. Several could make one, but the set up time would make it a pretty expensive item. Right now I'm planning to just cap the ends of the tube with a flat piece of 1/2" acrylic cut to the size of the tube. Not the end of the world.

I picked up the parts from the CNC guy today - I haven't had a chance to look them over too much, but the few I checked out looked smooth! The acrylic is really clean on the edges, and since it's the cast stuff vs. the extruded I think a flame should turn the edge really well.

Saw this baby up close and personal last night.  It's big, and it's bad.  Such a clean design, and the angles keep it interesting.  It's HUGE, but in no way does it resemble a giant block.  It'll house speeders, a Falcon or two, an Imperial Shuttle, and a Slave easily and with room to spare.  Also, I don't know if you guys noticed, but in pic 4869, there's a little box in the frontmost corner that smugglers, weapons, etc. can hide in.  There's a panel to cover it that's not pictured........very Falcon-esque, and a nice touch.

This could be any starport in the SW universe, and depending on how it's "staffed," could be controlled by Imperial, Rebel, or neutral forces.  It makes me wish I was one of DP's kids this Christmas.

Amazing work, DP.

Amazing! Your kids are so lucky to have a father like you that can make such wonderful play sets. The part I like best about this project is the clear platforms. Are you going to leave the entire set white or paint it? What if you added alittle bespin-like sculpture for the center. It could be the complex's fountain.

This is without a doubt, one of the coolest things I've ever seen anyone make.  You have totally blown me away with this.  Such detail and precision - to me, this looks almost like the ultimate Bespin Playset - it really has a Cloud City feel to it.

I agree totally with CHEWIE. At least a mention here. Taking a moment to look back over the pics, I was even more amazed at the detail and the workmanship of this huge project. All in all, how long did it take you?

That is REALLY neat! The detail is just amazing! IMO it looks like something out of Bespin. Looking back through the posts, I see that CHEWIE mentioned this as well! Awesome work, and the figures look great all set up!

BTW, I laughed out loud at the Bush poster in your room. ;D

I have kids the same age as yours DeanPaul and I wonder how often those figures get totally knocked down and thrown all over the room. If I had a setup like that those figures would never stand a chance of standing upright. It would turn into one big pile of toys.

DP OUTSTANDING!!! I am sure your kids will enjoy it more and more every year.  This is something that will grow with them.

Dean,

Quite the outstanding job at making the playset. So many people have mentioned they were going to make the playset over the years, but you've achieved it and with spectacular results to boot. Any plans to give it a paintjob similar to the original article or are you at the point where with all the toys on their the kids wouldn't want to take them off? :) Those are actually my favorite pictures, the ones with all the toys on the playset and the kids playing with them, just great stuff.

Happy Customizing!

Wow - Thanks everyone for the kind words. The playset is getting a lot of use and holding up well. Leif's cousins are coming on Thursday to check it out, that should be the real proof of concept day regarding durability!

Amazing! Your kids are so lucky to have a father like you that can make such wonderful play sets. The part I like best about this project is the clear platforms. Are you going to leave the entire set white or paint it? What if you added alittle bespin-like sculpture for the center. It could be the complex's fountain.

You're right, it does look a lot like Bespin because of the white - more than I thought it would originally. The renderings I did look a little blue/grey, and I really liked that look but thought the toys may feel flat against it. the white also receives some nice shadowing from the vinyl striping on the 1/2" acrylic.

Mostly I wanted a neutral place for a wide variety of ships to stand out. I really wanted the Hasbro products themselves to be the heros and this place be just a space for stuff to happen. My daughter had the best line when we were setting up all of the figures for pictures. She said "it's like a bunch of stories all happening at the same time".

Oh...My...God!  What a wonderful Christmas present!!!  Your grandfather would be proud and it would touch his heart to know that his original version helped inspire to make this for your kid(s).

This deserves a front page mention here and on the cover of Toy Fare magazine...

Thanks Chewie, while I've built a number of things in the past there was a real connection building this project since it was so similar to the one he made for me. I really recognize what a labor of love it must have been for him, considering the tools he had access to and the size of his workshop.

I honestly hadn't considered this project making the front page here at Defender - thanks for the nomination and to Jesse for posting it. Toy Fare is probably a little far off, but thanks for the compliment!

I agree totally with CHEWIE. At least a mention here. Taking a moment to look back over the pics, I was even more amazed at the detail and the workmanship of this huge project. All in all, how long did it take you?

Thanks there are a lot more images on my Mac account. Seriously, there are a bunch of cool pictures of this there. (http://homepage.mac.com/deanpaulrussell/starwars/PhotoAlbum67.html) Go check them out. This is one of my favorites:

I created the computer model in April. It took about a day or two to do that. I was slow with professional projects and at the time I thought it might make a good October birthday present. Instead I got super busy in August and September, and it slid until Christmas. I mentioned earlier that I had most of my parts milled on a CNC machine. This saved me a lot of time and effort, especially with the accuracy of the angles and the finished edges of the acrylic. I didn't get my parts until the 17th (even then I was missing a few) so I had less than a week to put it all together. I couldn't tell you total hours, but it was extensive. I had two all-nighters (with power equipment) during the week, but it was finished and painted Thursday night. I assembled it in place Christmas Eve, and with the other projects I was up until 3am.

Here are the other pieces of furniture I built for Christmas:

The metal shelves with baltic birch tops were for Leif, the play table was for Finn and the baltic birch/cherry/red shelves were for Savannah.

This desk was for Savannah and Leif to share our old computer and also have room for drawing. I chickened out of making drawers in time for Christmas...

Here's a close up of the play table.

I have kids the same age as yours DeanPaul and I wonder how often those figures get totally knocked down and thrown all over the room. If I had a setup like that those figures would never stand a chance of standing upright. It would turn into one big pile of toys.

It only looked like that for the pictures. You may notice that several ships and figures are missing parts and have some serious paint wear. That's because we play with everything, and a lot of time these toys do sit in heaps on the ground. I'm hoping the heaps will stay better confined to the space station going forward, but it's doubtful.

Here are a few more images:

Thanks again to everyone for the encouragement.

Wow.  This really is a major piece of work.  Like everyone else, I'm touched by the family connection of the whole thing, and bowled over by the craftsmanship.  I've got a 15 month old, and another due in the summer, and I hope that I can share SW with them the way you are with your children.  Simply awesome, and a great way to start a new year!

Dean,

Any plans to give it a paintjob similar to the original article or are you at the point where with all the toys on their the kids wouldn't want to take them off?

I looked into using cut vinyl to apply colored geometry but my wife thought it wouldn't look Star Wars-y. The magazine article spec'd plywood components, and the vinyl taping was meant to hide the edges of the plywood banding. Since I used MDF, I got a nice clean edge that painted well for the most part. I did want some markings for ship landing areas, so I had matte white shapes I drew in Adobe Illustrator cut on a Gerber machine. I also had some thin stipes cut that you see on some of the acrylic - they create a nice shadow scape below and still retain a venetian blind type transparency.

I'm passing on color for now, mosly because it's done enough except for the monorail car.

Dean that is amzing. :o

It is easily one of the coolest pieces I've ever seen, and I really mean that. I am blow away by the sheer size and detail. The cuts are all so clean and everyting fits together perfectly. I would absolutely love to have something like that, it would make a great multipurpose disply, and like CHEWIE said it would even work as a Bespin playset.

So what are you going to end up doing about the monorail car? Are young goign to add it later, or just leave it the way it is?

Great work, Dean.  Way to impress your son with your engineering talent!

The size is still hard to imagine b/c of all those SW toys!  i would hate to accidently bump into it.

Me next! Me next!  ;D

The piece looks awesome DP. I just have a couple questions...

How much time did it take to build?
Roughly what did it cost to make?
How much do I have to spend to have you make one for me?

Holy crap DP, that looks incredible!  After seeing all of the figures on it, I'm completely floored!  Excellent work!  The only thing that I can do is keep shouting praise at you!  I want one!   :)

By the way, Dengar's missing his backpack...  ;)  :P (hey, I needed to give some constructive criticism right?)

Bump.  This came up on Twitter recently, and my hat's still off to DeanPaul (heard he's holed up in a cavern in Utah somewhere, growing a beard) for A) making an incredible gift for his son, and B) making an incredible diorama any adult collector would've killed to have!

I recall something from the ESB era...less generic space base and more environmental specfic from that film Dagobah and/or Hoth. Saw it online.

Edit FOUND THEM http://theswca.com/images-speci/womansday2/ (http://theswca.com/images-speci/womansday2/)

Not as big and sturdy as the Star Wars one.
