I would guess next month might be one of the runners up from last vote:
Someone make a mental note for future topics - Imperials, Vong, Vehicles...
Or, maybe something completely different! ;)
I'm guessing it will be something completely different :P
-
I'd vote vehicles
-
I'd vote vehicles for sure but I think we are getting ahead of ourselves already. We didn't decide on this topic until the end of the first week of April ;)
-
Hi guys,
I think it would be a good idea to start a new thread and start the debate for may challenge before may gets here. This would give us more time to work on the project instead of being a week behind. Just my two cents.
Jedi_Master_Ben
P.S. Vehicles has my vote ;D!
-
Since I'm fairly new to this (only 1 entry thus far :p), is this always fan-fic or do we ever do a specific character? just wonderin :)
-
Rolla usually these are fan-fiction.
If we do vehicles (which I am all for) here is one I was contemplating on saving for a vehicles month -
(http://chewie34.250free.com/041706ScoutAssaultWalkerone.jpg)
I think I have another idea for another vehicle or two, probably using mini rig parts. I'm all for vehicles. :)
:)

The "Monthly Challenge" is usually a broad category so that people can do what they want. Past examples have been Gladiators, Rebel Troopers, Bounty Hunters, etc.
You don't have to do Fan Fiction, but you can if you want. For example, if the category was "Vehicles" you could do up a fan-fic vehicle like CHEWIE shows, or you could tackle an actual movie vehicle (like the Sith Infiltrator). Either works becaise they are both "vehicles".
Or, like this month's category - Gladiators. You could do up a total fan-fic gladiator or you could make one of the Cartoon gladiators. Either way works.
The "Group Project" on the other hand, that is the one that focuses on a specific character (or two) - Isard, Daala, Tonnika Twins, etc.
-
ok! gotcha!
Still votin vehicles. :)
-
I just thought of this idea and thought I'd run it by you all:
Many of us have been doing this for a long time and I'm sure our first projects looked like dog poo. So, what if we took our worst custom we've done, and redo it? Then when we post, show a side by side comparison.
One rule though! Has to be the same outfit from before. Modifications are alright, but for example if you did dagobah luke years ago, then you cant redo him as jedi knight luke.
Any takers?
-
I think that's a pretty cool idea Rolla. However I don't even have any of my old crappy customs anymore...
:)
-
I've only been customizing for a year - none of mine are crappy :) Not really true. I've got an idea already :)
-
I agree vehicles would be cool, but isn't a month a little to short for a vehicle custom? It takes me a lot more time then a month to build a decent vehicle mostly...
-
kit does have a point there. Well, except for chewie who pumps out customs even as he sleeps at night! :)
-
Well, when we did Dioramas/Playsets, that was a two-month thing.
If people really think it will take 2 months to do, then we can make "vehicles" a two-month event also (although most people wait until the last minute anyway :P).
-
I guess I could give vehicles a try. Ive havent ever actually done a Star Wars vehicle custom. But I agree, this should be one of the 2 month projects. Mostly because I wouldn't even know where to begin. :P
Sure Chewie did that AT-ST in under a month, but he's practicly the MacGuver of customising. I'm sure he made that out of a tin can and a tooth pick.
-
what about maybe animals or rideable creatures? like dewbacks, banthas, rancors, etc.?
-
These are all good ideas. On the vehicles yeah the latest ones I've done (the walker and the hover tanks) only took me about a day each, but not everyone has that kind of time. I think the dioramas take a lot longer since it seems more construction/planning is involved, but really I'm up for whatever you guys want to do. If it needs to be 2 months, then that's fine. I'll just make 2 vehicles then. ;)
Rolla has a great idea too on the creatures/beasts of burden. I say we do that too in the near future.
:)

It's amazing how often we need to tell people this. I guess no one reads anymore.

read what? I just wanted to know, thats all. Geez.

Monthly Customizing Challange (http://www.jedidefender.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=9091.0)
-
well, alrighty then!
-
I don't think anyone meant this to be criticial. I think Phruby was just pointing out that this question gets asked frequently. I myself and guilty of asking the same question about two months ago :)
Would it helpful to post a sticky explaining the MCC and Group Project? Any thoughts anyone?
-
I just was curious
-
I don't see anything wrong with the question being asked... not everyone comes in here on a daily or even a weekly basis. True we do repeat ourselves some, but we have a very friendly customizing community here so let's not get under each other's skin...
:)
-
I'm not a customizer myself but I love looking at all your work and have an idea which I would really like to see.
Original trilogy animated charcters such as the style of the new gentle giant statues, an idea worth considering for some point in the future I think as you all did such a great job on the clone wars figures.
I'd Love too see some vehicles too though.
-
still offering up Post ROTS-PRE ANH stuff :P
-
ah...I'd love to do vechicles...finally a reason to start that at-te.but..I agree we should make it 2 months...I'd be lucky if I could finish an At-Te in that time period.
-
I actually purchased an item to customize for a vehicle this last week... I think I could actually get it customized in 2-3 days and then try and make another vehicle too. Vehicles I think get my vote for May...
:)
-
As an occassional contributor, I'll chime in. I like the idea of vehicles and I'm all set to participate.
That being said, I think this can be a one month project. I just started making vehicles in the past few weeks and once I got over the initial fear of it, it's actually pretty easy. If your goal is to scratch build a ship from styrene then you will need 2 months (at least). But if you are building off of an existing base, they are actually pretty quick.
My cargo shuttle took about 6 hours (paint time inlcuded). The Darth Vader Jedi Starfighter repaint was under an hour. My Battle Damaged Jedi Starfighter was 4 hours. The Clone Commnad Chariot took about 8 hours (3 of which were spent disassembling and cleaning the gross Mauler tank I got as a base -- it was rusty and muddy on the inside).
If people aren't comfortable with one month, then go with two. I just figured since most people here haven't started tackling vehicles yet, it might be good to give a perspective from someone who's done a couple.
-
you know, you could for ANY monthly challenge say it is 1 month, but still accept entries up to 2 months. This would allow for the people that are doing more complex customs to have time to do them. Just an idea.
-
I vote vehicles.
-
Woa if we did vehicles I could finally enter :o I started work on this litlle boat thingie merjigie last night...
I'll call it the AA-TT - Amphibous Attack Troop Transport... lol
-
I'll call it the AA-TT - Amphibous Attack Troop Transport... lol
Why is that funny?
Vehicles get my vote as well. Hopefully I'll finally get around to finishing one of these again next month. My diorama got to about 90% completion and then I haven't really had a chance to work on it much lately. Finals end the 12th of May for me so I should have plenty of time after that. :)
-

I was going to ask about this project - I was looking forward to seeing it finished.
-
I agree with tykrazen that this can be a one-month project... sometimes these are more simple than trying to make a specific custom figure because you can work off a base vehicle usually, especially if you're not going for an established design from scratch.
I guess it just depends on what you're trying to make. Someone like me makes fan fiction stuff without a plan in mind and can usually make it quickly. But if you want to make an AT-TE... it might take several months or even longer.
I say we do one month, and if you want to submit your vehicle a little late, then that's fine too.
:)
-
just a thought, but it would be cool if people new to the challenges could do ones from the past and be put into the archives as well for display. Heck, even if you've already done one from several months ago and wanted to do another NOW, you could do it and have it posted. Kinda like how FFURG keeps up their archives of their custom challenges.
-
I see no problem with that Rolla. Ryan updates the thread index on past submission and I'm sure he'd be happy to add in late additions.
:)
-
Cool! If thats the case I've got a few ideas for past projects that I'd like to do too.
-
monday is may 1st, so is vehicles the challenge for may I assume? :)
-
I hope so because I started today :P...
I'm tackling the E-wing Fighter -- I've had this in mind for quite sometime and this finally gave me the motivation to start. I chose this project, because there was such a great existing base for the vehicle, but it would require real construction work to make the wings -- that would be a good area to expand my skills. I began with a vintage X-Wing Chasis and stripped the eletronics and non essential parts from it. Then I began work on the droid socket. I'm trying to create the tangled, messy mechanical look of the reference pic (from the DE Handbook published by DH). Currently I've added the astromech flooring and the back wall with piping. I plan on adding additional greeblies and wires to the back wall as well. The roof to this compartment (with the big ole' gun on top) will be removable so that the astromech can be taken out (Which I guess means I need to customize an R6 unit.)
After I glued these parts in, I realized it probably made sense to make some templates of the cut pieces as I move along so I can make more of these at a later date if I wanted. Oh well... these first cuts weren't too bad to do.
I've also begun cutting the wings -- I used a thicker stock for the wings to give it a little more structure. I'm still debating how I am going to attach the wings to the chasis. I'm leaning towards building a plug which goes through the hole in the side of the chasis and having another internal piece "locking" it in. I'll post pics of the mechanism as I figure that out.

What I would LIKE to do is a Vong Coral Skipper. The problem is I cant find any pics anywhere. I know there is at least one out there, Ive seen it. BUt I dont remember where. Can anybody help a brother out?

I'll try and build one this month. But to get started, here's some pics of an older swoop I did

I have some at home -- I'll try to scan them tonight.
-
I'm working on one or two vehicles this month (Did we decide if this was a one or two month project). I'll throw out a picture from a Clone Wars Gunship I made a while back. Its an older custom so it doesn't qualify for this project but I don't think I've shared it here.
-
I had 3 coral skipper pictures. I've uploaded them here (http://www.thejawa.com/customs/reference/eu/njo/coralskipper/coralskipper.php)
-
Thanks Tykrazen youre a lifesaver. ;D
-
Yay time to start. I've got the thing primed and im still deciding wether it should be a clone vehicle or a mando vehicle.
-
Here are several WIPs of my Custom Vehicle. Ty-Ri's Jedi Starfighter:
The base vehicle is a CORP jet plane. I turned the tail wings upside down and attached them to the frame with greenstuff.
For Phase II I added an R5 head that I had lying around from some custom fodder I got from AdamS. I added the back foil using a piece of styrene that was cut from a "No Tresspassing" Sign (thanks again for the tip Jesse).
You can't see it in these WIPs but I also updated the cockpit interior with a new decal from Erik Stormtroopers site (thanks for the tip again Jesse!). I've also already cleaned up some of the lines that came from a poor masking job.
I'm unsure on adding any specifici weathering to this one. It is a Pre-AOTC vehicle so I imagine the Jedi are able to keep their starfigthers fairly clean.
-
How much did the corps jet cost, I know they are extremely cheap.
So far it looks real cool, but a jedi would never use an r5, The R5 model was a downgraded version of R2's and 3's IT didn't have all the gizmos and also developed a depressing and pessamistic personality. :-\
-
The jet cost a whopping $4.95 at Wal-Mart.
As far as the astromech. I'll confess that I'm not an astromech expert. I grabbed the only head that was readily available and slapped it on. If it is an integrated Astromech, maybe the could use an R5 model? Maybe?

Wow that ARC really looks like it's been through a ton of battles and looks really nice. Very well done.
I hate to say it, but I am going to be hard pressed to participate this month.
:)

I like the new version better :)
-
oh man! Thats cool! What really hit me is that I have that same laser cannon on top of my ship as well! AND my ship I've been working on is kinda along the same line as yours. KInda a weird co-winky-dink. :)
-
:o :oWOW! that looks alot better with the solar panels removed Fritz, probably the best vehicle custom i've ever seen!
-
I agree, those simple changes (which I'm sure weren't easy though) really make a world of difference. I love this. Excellent work!
:)
-
I think I am the minority here, but I like it better with the solar panels/airfoils on. It still looks great now though. The weathering is top-notch, and I really like the color-scheme. Great work Fritz.
Brent- You are off to a great start. I like the big curved wing area on the back. I'm excited to see the finished product here. :)
Nirvana- Wow, excellent snow camo on those. I really like the added battle damage on the ARC. The banshee looks pretty cool too, do you have a shot of one of the Clone pilots near that? I'm curious about its scale.
-

Thanks, the banshee fighter is pretty much in scale with the SW line. Here's a pic you asked for:
-
Fritz I think I've changed my mind, I went back and looked at the tie panel pics and acually think it looked better how it was... it just looks too much like a helicopter now.
I think it would have been better if you'd just added a little red and white to the panels to blend them into the ship a little more rather than remove them.
-
Wow, that banshee looks pretty good with that rodian pilot! (http://www.jedidefender.com/yabbse/Themes/classic/images/post/thumbup.gif)
I picked up a cheap garage sale vehicle that I'm going to try something with... of course, I still need to finish my gladiator from last month first. ::) :-[

Since I've been kind of Slackin on the Previous Monts Challenges.
I thought I'd through together another Custom for this Challenge.

Great Job!!! :) What did you use for the things on the sides?
-
**** that's awesome... Is it a water vehicle of some sort?
-
wow....nice job fritz..now thats something I'd kill for to get in my collection...(along with your attack ship.)
just to clear my head up...is this a 2 month challange?...since I haven't even finished the body of my at-te.
-
Joe, would you like scale cutsheets for the ATTE?
-
when you say scale cut sheets....?

Hi everyone. I'm new to this site, but have been a member at GH for a while. I also have a few friends here at JD and have been browsing for some time. I have been admiring everyone's customs and Photo Novels a lot.
I saw your latest challenge and thought I would post something I worked on a while back. I know it doesn't qualify, but felt compelled to post it anyway. I have two very small children so I don't get the chance to customize very much. This was finished right around the time Hasbro announced that they were releasing their own version of the Clone Wars Cartoon Republic Gunship. Oh well, I like mine better just because the paint ap on the wings is on the top and bottom, and the wing turrets are black like in the cartoon.
Thanks for letting me share and keep up the great work everyone!

Cutsheet: is a plan you print off of your computer, tape down to what ever media you are using(be it wood or styrene) and cut. Actually to any of you who want it I'll be more than happy to help. ;)

Great looking vehicles so far everyone!

that looks GREAT Brent, I really like how the blue looks.
thanks SP, but I already made my own set of "blueprints"..if anyone wants em..I can scan my messy had writing on.
like I said SP, thanks,
Joe
-
Brent that is outstanding. It almost has a vintage "Droids" feel to it from the cartoon.
I think it could use a little bit of wear and tear, but still looks sharp as it is. I especially like the curved tail section - it looks AWESOME.
:)
-
Hang on im still in shock over Fitzkreigs tank. There are no words to describe how cool that is. Excellent work.
I like BrentS's ship too. The Blue R5-D4 just the icing on the cake. I love that one. ;D
I like D-N's rodian Pilot. He looks almost as cool as the ship. I may swipe that idea. He looks really good D_N.
Personally I think the Gunship looks awesome. if I didn;t know any better I would say that was factory paint.
Excellent job all around guys. Noiw I just have to get off my arse and get my coral skipper done. :o
-
Thanks for the comments on my starfighter. I was going to weather it up a bit; however based on the frame pre-AOTC and just after TPM, I figure the Jedi can keep their starships pretty clean :)
-
Thats an amazing starfighter BrentS, I liked seeing the construction of it. Great work.
I wish I had time guys, i would make something. These are too cool.

I've been on a Vehicle Making Marathon this Month. Here's another entry for this Months Challenge along with it's Crew.
I thought the Republic Commandos Needed a Stealth Gunship for Rapid Insertion and Retrieval for Use in Their special Ops Missions. LMK what you think.

*Roton faints in a speechless manner*
-
*WOW* :D Fritzkrieg That's awesome. That stealth Commando goes good with the gunship.
-
Update: Found one of those helicopters that Fritzkrieg keeps using and kind of ripped the design of mine from his 3... but mine is going to be a
Mandalorian Low Altitude Heavy Artillery Troop Transport.
Hope that name doesnt sound stupid. The thing has been primed and sprayed white and Im working on the details atm. Hope i get done before the month is up!
-
Can't Wait to see How it Comes out. I put a little Mandalorian Skull symbol on the Nose, as an Ode to the Clone's Mando Heritage. It's Did'nt Come Out very Clearly in Most of the Pics, But It's Pretty Clear in the Pic of the Pilot in the Open Cockpit. Infact All of my Recent Clone Vehicle Customs have a Mando Symbol. Here's a little Montage.

Fritz I think the tie wings would look great on that stealth ship. The colours would blend alot better than they did on the original.
-
Why not Squeeze another Entry into this Months Challenge ;D
I Wanted to make a 501st Version of my Hover Tank, but now That it's Finished I think I Like the GAR Color Scheme Better. Icould Not Duplicate The Fodder I Used for the First Version So I Used a Water Gun to Create the Base of the Tank. I Also, adde a Side gunner, Just to throw the Symetry Off . And Of Corse I needed a Commander For my Tank So I Made Commander Appo. This is My Second Version of this Concept Character. LMK What You Think.

I think I replied about the tank in another thread, just after I picked my jaw up off of the floor. I like the stealth gunship, as a matter of fact I love all of them. AS of yeaterday there were 2 of these left at my local Target, I think Im going to have to grab them and give one of these a try myself. What can I say Fritz, you are very inspiring. ;D
-
Fritz, you're just blowing my mind with all of these awesome vehicles lately, very very impressive.
My entery this month is lame.
FLASH SPEEDER REPAINT.
Since I've had little time for customizing lately, I went balls out this weekend and got some done. I knew that I'd need a Flash Speeder repainted soon for a photonovel so I figured I better get it done now for this challenge.
:)

Does Any body have an Idea for a base of this ship? http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Sharp_Spiral
-
(http://starwars.wikia.com/images/c/c4/Spiraldraw.png)
I'm not sure where you'd even start Smarty... but that is one wicked ship design!
:)
-
That is a sweet vehicle!
Could you take an A-Wing and add modified wings from a ROTS fighter? Just a thought off the top of my head.
-
Well unfortunately the Coralskipper will have to wait for now I cant find the neccessary parts to start with. BUt have no fear, I do have a vehicle in mind for this project. I've only reached one amall anag. I need a Mellinium Falcon Cockpit cover to finish it. I know these are harder to get than an honest congressman but Ive put the call out anyway. Can anyone help me out?
AS far as that concept ship, It looks vaugely similar to the old Super Powers Lex-sor 7. IF I could find a pic I'd post it.
-
I see parts of an A-wing X-wing for engines, and a Snowspeeder, but I'm not gonna tear all of that apart.
-
I think you could use an x-wing by itself as the base. slice out where the astromech is so that it goes right from the cockpit to the tail. Cut in front of the cockpit and use stryene to build out the front.

WIP shot of my Mandalorian Low Altitude Heavy Artillery Troop Transport. More in my customs thread.

Impressive land vehicle. what do you call it, and what is it made from(vehicle that it was previously. thanx
-
I beleive that vehicle is the G.I.Joe General right? OR was it the rolling thunder? I know it had 2 large missiles but for the life of me I cant remember what it was called. This is one joe vehicle that I never had but a freind of mine did. Excellent job.
-
THank you both. Yes, It was a GI Joe Rolling Thunder. I call it an AT-TT, for lack of a better term.
Aside from two-tone paint work, I basically:
removed the rear turret and replaced it with a soffit vent
removed the entire inner frame with ICBMs, replaced it with seatas from a GI Joe APC and the track for the scout car between the two ramps
cut out and hinged the rear deck into a gantry
wedged on of the rear tire, because this particular one had a cracked axle
-
sort of reminds me of thunderbird 2 with the vehicles inside and all.
-
sort of reminds me of thunderbird 2 with the vehicles inside and all.
I just figured it to be limited in directions to travel, so it needed a quick perimeter scout for the ground and air.
I had intended to land a Republic gunship on it, but that doesn't quite work.
What is a Thunderbird 2?
-
Well, Heres my first WIP of the Darkbird. Which for all intents and purposes is The NJO version of the Mellinium Falcon.
In the books Han painted the Flacon a Matte black color to try to desgiuse her. So essientially thats what I did too. I'm still missing parts( Like the desperately needed cockpit cover!!!) and I still have a few touches to make on her. but she's coming along.

As always your thoughts and comments are very appreciated. Any parts anyone has to help me complete this are more than welcome too.
-
That looks Like Awsome Can't Wait to see it finished.
I never Knew the Falcon Was Redecoed in the
NJO. I was Not a Fan of That Story Line So I Skipped it.
The Funny Thing Is, that I'm Working On a Falcon Custom Myself.
Mine's Basicly a Freighter Refitted for GAR Use.
Great Work Can't Wait to See It Complete.
-
What is a Thunderbird 2?
Oh yeah I forgot Thunderbirds is an English thing.
Thunderbirds is an old TV programme made using puppets.
Thunderbird 2 was one of the ships in this programme which carried a few other smaller vehicles inside it:
I can't remember all of them but I remember one was a moler that was basically a drill on tank tracks for going underground another was an under water thing and one that was basically a digger.
-
God, then they made an atrocious kids movie here in the USA for that show :-X

In the Early Days of the Clone Wars Many Civilian Star Ships Were Pressed Into Service to fill a Growing Need in the GAR Fleet. One such Ship, the YT-1300 freighter Was Outfitted For Use in The GAR. Because of Its Speed, Survivability, and Ability to Transport Small Stike Teams, the YT-1300 was Perfect for Sacking Capital Ships and Raiding Supply Convoys. Equiped w/ A Grapling Hook the YT-1300 Would Attach Its Self to a Target Ship, where the Stike Team would Then Enter to Engage the Crew and Scuttle the Target Ship. Plo Koon Commanded Such A ship for a Short Time Durring the Clone Wars, Until His Ship And Pilot Nick named, "Mynock" were Lost Durring an Attempt to Capture Viceroy Nute Gunray aboard his Command ship.
LMK What You Think.

That is a amazing Fritz, Looks great IMO some of the reds I think could be softened up a bit but, besides that it looks great.
Right now I have a speeder in the works, and I'm trying to build up the Guts to cut up an X-wing for my Sharp Spiral. :-\
-
Darth Ennis - your falcon repaint looks awesome. I'm looking forward to seeing this one finished!
Fritz - your's also looks great. However, that Plo Clone looks like he's taking a pee on the game table ;) (of course to my colorblind eyes it looks like pee but it could be green I suppose).
-
Lol! Thank you BrentS for a good laugh...I just noticed that.
-
Wow, you guys really went all out this month on this! That YT-Freighter is AWESOME!
I'll comment more when I get a chance guys!
So what is the plan for the June customizing challenge?

Lol! Thank you BrentS for a good laugh...I just noticed that.
Me too! I hadn't noticed that! Very funny!
-
HIP HOP style SW ;D

HIP HOP? I do hope you're kidding... unless of course we decided to make Pimps... like Lando.
Actually, I think that would be hilarious... I'm all for pimps for June.

Sorry about the size of the pictures

That is one Badass looking Jedi starfighter. The Black and green look killer. Good job Tin_Man.
Smarty that is one helluva Speederbike. I like the addition of hte Fett wings on the front. The paint job is one of your best. Keep it up. I may have to copy this design, I love the way it looks.
I have some great news concerning my unfinished entry. I just so happened to catch 2 auctions on Ebay and managed to snag all of the parts I need to finish my Night Bird. Hopefully Ill have it done by somethime next week.

Wow, your paint apps are so clean! Everything is really sharp and precise, I'd like to see some WIP pictures if you have any on hand. Great stuff!
-
Thanks for the compliments. I'm quite the perfectionist, almost to a fault. Since I worked on this a long while ago, I only have a few WIP pictures, but here you go:
The one thing that I remember about the 'face' was that I wasn't pleased with it until I added the black highlights. That really sealed it for me. It also covered up minor imperfections where the different colors meld together. Thanks again.
