Title: "Choke on that, causality!"
Post by: Nathan on January 6, 2006, 03:12 AM
Take this with the requisite boulder of salt, etc. etc., but even so ........ damn.

Variety: 'Futurama' may get new lease on life (http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117935453?categoryid=1050&cs=1&s=h&p=0)

Please be true. Please be true. Please be true. This pretty much made my otherwise spectacularly mediocre day. (http://cheesebuerger.de/images/midi/froehlich/a035.gif)

Discuss.

I love(ed) Futurama even more so than Family Guy.  Couldn't wait to catch the new eps on Sunday nights.  I don't see how FG could come back without Futurama following.  Haven't checked in awhile, but I believe only the first two volumes can still be found in stores...

I so hope that Futurama comes back, I remember seeing it late night here and thinking wow cool check out the ships and stuff.
Then when the dvd's came out I snapped em up, they go into the dvd player at least once per week.
I hope if they do get it back they dont get Leela and Fry together , the tension between the two of them was one of the things that made the show enjoyable.

I cant understand how Fox kills off good shows and brings us all the reality crapfests and bottom-of-the-pond-scum like "War at Home".

We NEED Futurama back... and Arrested Development KEPT!!!!!!!!!!

HEAR ME FOX????????????

I personally can't stand most of the crap on adult swim save for FG, Futurama & ATHF.

Damn...

Simpsons, Family Guy, King of the Hill (I think it's ending though :(), American Dad, and Futurama on the same night?

Animation Domination indeed.

I love(ed) Futurama even more so than Family Guy.

Same here. As I've said elsewhere (http://www.jedidefender.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=8296.0), FG is gag-driven while Futurama is character-driven. They're both really funny, but on Futurama you actually come to care about the characters instead of just laughing at the random silliness/stupidity of cardboard cutouts. IMO the the first type is much more conducive to long-term interest and repeat viewings.

BTW, I didn't "discover" Futurama until the Adult Swim reruns, in 2004 I think. I still haven't picked up any of the DVDs, but I intend to do so eventually.

I'm excited about the prospect of Futurama returning, but if it doesn't happen I'll be satisfied watching the old ones over and over (finally got some of the DVD's).

Whilte I like Family Guy very much, I just think Futurama is on another level.  I think Valin's right on the mark describing FG as "gag-driven".  That can get old after awhile, but Futurama seems to get better the more I watch it.  I also love the countless references to various sci-fi works.

One thing I like about Futurama compared to Simpsons and FG is that it sometimes (though rarely) gets really serious--almost depressing.  Remember the episode with Fry's fossilized dog?  The first time I saw that episode I was shocked at how intense it got.  Another example is the "Luck of the Fryish" episode.  That Breakfast Club music gets me every time :)

(Hope I didn't spoil anything for any Futurama newcomers.)

Ya, I was watching Futurama on AS last night and they had the bumpers which said that the entire cast is going into the studio and the 4 DVD movies should be out by Summer.

Isn't the "entire cast" like 4 people?   ;D

I just hope the writing is as good.  I'm really excited about the movies.  Hopefully Leela will still reject Fry.  They're better when they're bickering.

'Futurama' co-creator DAVID X. COHEN talks to Toyfare about the long-awaited new season (for 2008) (http://www.wizarduniverse.com/magazine/toyfare/002710592.cfm)
Title: Re: "Choke on that, causality!"

Good news everyone...

I especially loved the last two q&a's

Are there any new characters being introduced in the new season that you’re excited about?

COHEN: Yes, particularly Nudar, the evil alien nudist. We’re not sure what the censorship issues are as far as showing unrecognizable alien reproductive organs. I guess we’ll just put it on the air and see what happens.

Well, until Nudar debuts, who’s your favorite minor character on the show?

COHEN: Hypnotoad. By the way, we are looking into producing a full 22-minute episode of Everybody Loves Hypnotoad for the DVD release. I am serious.

and

Groening interview February 2007 (http://www.craveonline.com/filmtv/articles/04647510/rhymes_with_raining.html)

"Crave Online: Are they really full movies or just three episodes together?

Matt Groening: We're writing them as movies and then we're going to chop them up, reconfigure them, write new material and try to make them work as separate episodes.

Crave Online: Can DVD versions be more extreme than the ones for air?

Matt Groening: Those are the marching orders we gave ourselves, yes, to really try to push it and do things we might not be able to do on TV. And then Comedy Central picked up the show and we went, "Okay, probably there's nothing we can think of that Comedy Central won't run" because I'm astonished at what I see on Comedy Central every day.

Crave Online: How will you turn those into episodes then?

Matt Groening: We are reconfiguring them and writing new material and narration and this that and the other so that they'll stand on their own as episodes.

Crave Online: Could it go on beyond that?

Matt Groening: I hope so. My guess now is that this is basically a season that we're in production on which is complicated because they're also DVDs, so that they'll probably wait and see how they do and then we'll get the pickup.

Anybody picking this up tomorrow?  I'm game and it looks like Best Buy has the best "deal."  Not really sure it's worth $17.99 as you can buy a complete season for $19.99, but I loves me my Futurama.

I'm gonna rent it.  Watch it.  Then buy it when it eventually comes out on Blu-ray.  I read that it was mastered from a high def source, so I don't have any idea why they didn't release it on Blu-ray from the get-go.

Glad you liked it......Do you think it's worthy of an $18 purchase?  I still haven't picked up a copy yet.
Title: Re: "Choke on that, causality!"
Post by: BillCable on November 29, 2007, 12:26 PM
Tough to say.  I'm holding out for a high-def version, but there's a lot that could happen with the movie.  They're recutting it for Comedy Central, so they might come out with a Volume 4 box set down the line with all 4 of the 90-minute films in episodic form.  So there might be a better package in the not too distant future.

It'll be very interesting to see how they recut it, since it was one cohesive, continuous story.

If I knew this was going to be the only version available for the long term, I'd buy it.  But there are too many possible configurations for me to commit right now.  My only reservation in that course is I hate not to reward the creators for bringing it back.

Post by: iFett on November 29, 2007, 12:59 PM
Thanks for the advice, I suppose it's worthy of a blind purchase as I still enjoy every single rerun on Cartoon Network and I'll catch a few eps of my boxed sets every so often.

My only reservation in that course is I hate not to reward the creators for bringing it back.

IIRC that's how Family Guy got put back on the air - because of excellent sales on the DVDs, so I couldn't hurt.   ;)

You won't believe the number of references they crammed into the movie.  Virtually every character makes an appearance.  They even included a reference from the video game, which is just ridiculous.

Not that anyone cares - but I see that another "movie" has been released today.  I haven't been keeping track after I got raped on the first "movie" I purchased at Target $19.99.  Bender's Big Score?  Seems like there's 3 or 4 more out there if I'm not mistaken.  It's a shame this hasn't been picked up again as I enjoyed this show much more than Family Guy which is also a FOX toon.

The Beast with a Billion Backs (http://www.amazon.com/Futurama-Beast-Billion-Brittany-Murphy/dp/B00158K0V0/ref=pd_bbs_sr_3?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1235533050&sr=8-3)

Bender's Game (http://www.amazon.com/Futurama-Benders-Blu-ray-Billy-West/dp/B001DZOC46/ref=pd_bbs_11?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1235533050&sr=8-11)

Into the Wild Green Yonder (http://www.amazon.com/Futurama-Into-Green-Yonder-Blu-ray/dp/B001MT7ZII/ref=pd_bbs_sr_10?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1235533050&sr=8-10)

I rented BwaBB first thing after I signed up for Netflix.  I thought it was fantastic... much better than Bender's Big Score.  Since The others are available on Blu-ray I intend to purchase them.  But I'm waiting a bit, hoping for a sale.

It's worth noting that sales of the movies have exceeded expectations, and there's a good chance they'll do more.

Fox considers bringing back Futurama!!! (http://www.inquisitr.com/18383/futurama-might-return-to-fox/)

Quote
Actor Billy West, the voice of Fry, Farnsworth, Zoidberg, Brannigan and more told the audience at the Anime Supercon in Florida recently that due to the strong sales of the Futurama DVD’s, Fox is considering a 6th season for a show they once canned due to poor ratings.

I had seen every episode since Day One, but I finally turned on this show this year and have abandoned it.

I just hate, hate, hate that it is on Comedy Central now. They are so fing ignorant with their programming. This show should not be running in the summer first of all. It should be on in the Fall like regular TV. And it did not help me at all that the network did NOTHING to promote the show's return, causing me to miss the first 2 episodes completely. Compound that with the fact that they refuse to make this show available On Demand, even though they do this with plenty of their other crappy shows, and you have one dissatisified longtime viewer.

The season was a complete waste for me...there's a slight chance I may go back and watch them again when they all come out on Blu-Ray, but I haven't even been able to buy the last set yet because it is so freaking expensive.

dvd sales are what caused the show to come back in the first place so please do so.   To be honest I've only seen 1 or 2 of the new episodes since it came back on tv - I just keep forgetting to set my dang dvr.  Definitely a bit different type of a vibe to the show from the FOX days, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

I will continue to watch the new episodes, but it is pretty bad compared to the Fox days. I don't laugh much.
