Where'd you manage to get the OT DVDs? I been really back and forth about buying them lately, I want em, but I think I can wait another year, but then I'm afraid the real OT won't be released, only the SE OT.... argh.

If you find one of the 2 Ewok Adventure movies on DVD... hollar at me, I absolutely cannot wait for them to be on DVD as I only got #1 on VHS and it's a rip from the TV airing.

Brad -
A ton of people found out about the bootleg OT DVDs in that huge, 9 month long Rebelscum thread Original Trilogy on DVD...finally! (http://forums.rebelscum.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=9;t=005739).  I'm sure that's where Scott got his from as well.  All three DVDs ran me $30 total (including shipping from Malaysia).  I was a little sketched out about buying them from some bootleggers, especially ones on the other side of the planet, but since so many people had nothing but good things to say about their purchase from these guys, I decided to go for it.  Very glad that I did!

They've got the original versions that I picked up, the Special Editions, and various other versions of the OT (like 5 star, etc.).  You should peruse that thread over at Rebelscum for the full scoop on the things, but be forewarned - it's 13 pages long!  The tricky part, is that the site that sells these bootleg DVDs changes it's URL every week or so, so tracking them down can be a pain sometimes.

Huh...I just checked the end of that thread and noticed you've already found your way over there having made the last post in it, so you're in the right place Brad!  Good luck the rest of the way!  The $30 is well worth spending, simply as insurance in case ol' George sticks to his word and never puts the original versions of the Trilogy out again.

The $30 is well worth spending, simply as insurance in case ol' George sticks to his word and never puts the original versions of the Trilogy out again.

At Celebration II McCallum informed us that the OT will be put out on DVD after Episode III is out on DVD. I should say, they will begin work on it after Episode III's DVD is released. Good news, but a long wait.

I am almost positive though I have heard that the Original non-Special Edition Trilogy will never be released on DVD...which is what the $30 Bootlegs are ;)

Yep, exactly.  I was referring to the original (non Special-Edition) versions of the Original Trilogy movies.  Lucas has said over and over that those will never see the light of day again - only the Special Editions from thence on.  Even the Special Editions might be in doubt at this point, since it sounds like Georgie might be thinking about tinkering with them some more before he puts out the "Definitive Edition" Saga Boxset after Episode 3.  Time will tell.  But since I don't care for many of the changes Lucas made in the Special Editions, I really wanted a set of DVDs of the versions that I grew up on...

Oh, I was tallking about the Special Edition, Rick McCallum told us that they will begin work on the OT DVD's after Episode III's DVD is done.

I'm kind of a Halloween Fan nothing like Star Wars though.  I really didn't see a difference (I haven't looked at the original since I got the DVD) but I think a couple of items were put in to make it be that you knew Lori was Michels Sister.  I though one of my two was the original release and got it thinking it may have some different extras but when I got home I noticed it was the same.

I'm not sure if those Malaysian bootleggers are sold out or not, but I'm pretty sure you can still get those OT movies from them.  The tricky thing is catching their most recent internet address, as they tend to change it weekly to keep the bootleg police off their tails!  They were still sending out updated URLs to most of us who ordered from them in the past.  Scott (OCB) might still be on their mailing list though...  Perhaps he could hook you up.

I ordered my original versions of the OT movies from them for only $30 total.  No problems whatsoever!  Don't give up yet, you might still be able to get some...

OMG.  Holy crap Jared!  Am I reading that right, you have 765 DVD's?!?!?  Damn.  That's certainly a diverse collection there - do you basically buy anything and everything new that comes out?  Like a DVD completist?!   ;)  Do you run a DVD rental service as well, 'cause I might want to sign up!

As for The Cat from Outer Space...  well, I remember watching that when I was young, and have even caught a few clips of it on reruns over the year.  Fun movie, so I won't tease you... too much...   :P   :D

Awesome collection though.  Keep it up!

Thanks for the support for my addiction, Matt! Movies are my other big hobby other than SW toys and I used to blow way too much cash on any damn DVD that I thought might be good to see, it was really bad. I've slowed down a lot in the last year or two, but I've been buying them since '97, when I was a big DVD advocate (I was quoted in USA Today a long way back, the article is still out there somewhere on the web). You're welcome to come over sometime and check out the setup and see E2 on the 73" 16x9 set, or Pootie Tang, whichever you think is a better movie.  ;)

Well now if you had asked if I'd prefer TPM or Pootie Tang, that might be a little tougher decision, but since it's AOTC instead, I'd probably give that the slight nod over Pootie Tang.  I might have to hit you up for some TV advice in the near future too, sounds like you've got a helluva setup there!

I'll have to look through your DVD list a little more to see what I might want to tease you about though...   ;D

BTW, where the heck did you get the West Side Story DVD?  I didn't think that was currently available.  Was it at one point a while back?

Here's a few questions for you DVD afficionados out there, especially Mr. 765 there!

1)  Does a Widescreen version of the movie Vacation exist (w/ Chevy Chase & Christie Brinkley)?  I've never seen one anywhere, and have temporarily settled for the "standard" full screen version, which I never buy.

2)  Have the Battlestar Galactica or Buck Rogers TV series been put onto DVD yet?  If not, any idea when this might be happening?

3)  Jared - Where'd you get your Westside Story DVD?  Is it still available at retail, or has it been discontinued for now?

I'm sure I could do a little research around the net on my own to get the answers, but I'm just too lazy...   :-\

Thanks for any help fellas!
Title: Re:Your DVD Collection
Post by: SilverZ on March 1, 2003, 02:46 AM
Your answers, kind sir:

1) There's still no widescreen version of Vacation. The only widescreen movie in the series in the US is European Vacation and there's a widescreen Vegas Vacation available in Japan. What a crime. The standard version looks terrible, IMHO, since I think it's from an old analog master from ages ago. I haven't heard any news of them revisiting it, but it sure would be nice!

2) Battlestar is supposed to be this year, I'd have to check on when, but I seem to recall summer, or whenever that new miniseries is debuting. I don't think there's been word on Buck Rogers though.

3) Westside Story should be available, but it's a few years old now (looks nice though) and I poked around for it just now and it seems like it might have gone out of print. I've had mine for a couple of years now; I probably bought it online. There's a new SE coming out on 4/1, so save your cash for that one, it looks really special:

http://www.dvdplanet.com/product_listing.asp?productid=30380&format=DVD

Hope that helps! I'm working on doing a little OT (ahem) "test" tonight, btw. :)

Hey Scott or anyone else who have ordered from http://clik.to/movieshop how to you finish your order.  I'm trying to get the OT SE and TTT but ever time I try to check out it says I have no items in my cart so they cannot charge me but I have those two items in my cart.  Any help will be nice. Thanks

Hey Tom -
Boy, that link took me straight into your shopping cart, which already had 3 of each of these items in it, along with a Back to the Future flick.  Obviously the next step would be to select "Shipping to" United States in the drop down box, and finally clicking the "Pay & Finish" button.

That then takes me to the final checkout page, and the items (which I edited to your original order) are still in the shopping cart for $45.98 total.  I'm afraid to click on the next step, not knowing if you already put in your credit card info or not.  But at this point you should be able to push either the "Secure Checkout" or "Standard Checkout" button, and continue on with the order.  Did you even get this far?  Like I said, I don't want to try further for fear of actually placing an order for you myself.

Hopefully this helps a little.  If not, you might want to try clearing out your cookies and starting all over, as there's no reason it shouldn't be working...  Good luck Tom, and give us another hollar to let us know how your order's progressing!

BTW, thanks for the answers there Mr. 765, excuse me, Mr. 811!  Glad to know I'm not going crazy and that there really isn't a Widescreen version of Vacation.  Looking forward to those old Sci-Fi TV classics and that S.E. of WSS!

I checked that site out that you dropped the link for, and started browsing through the cheap stuff to see if anything looked good, when I realized that there's about 10 bajillion titles for sale at that site, even just within the $6-10 range.  Holy cow.  A bit overwhelming!  Maybe when I find some more time, I'll surf through and pick up a few...

Thanks again for the DVD knowledge J!  I'm sure I'll come up with some more questions for our resident DVD guru soon!   ;)

Hey Matt,
I haven't been able to get pass the shopping cart section to go on to the paying section.  Its weird that the link took you directly to my shopping cartsince it doesn't do it to me, it takes me to the main page of the store.
I guess it really doesn't matter anyways since my parents found out that I was going to buy bootleg dvds they told me not too.  And seeing as I live in they house without paying rent I guess I should listen to them. :(

A few DVD sets I would love to get are the Star Trek TNG box sets, all seven seasons for only around $900. Yes, each set is about $120 a piece and then throw in tax! I don't think I will be getting all of these any time soon. :P

I've gotten through the TTT bootleg 1/2 way now and so far the quality is excellent, some scenes in the theater are not there in this DVD, probably because they shipped out this "screener" ahead of the release.

Every so often a little blurb comes up which says: "For you consideration"  This is what screeners are, they are for awards show voters to preview movies ahead of time.

Well worth the $10 and enough to tide me over until the Extended Version Release in the Fall

It sounds like The Simpsons: Season 3 will be released in June, hopefully Season 4 by Christmas in what I consider to be the Golden Age of the Simpsons, I can't wait!

24. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Ain't that more commonly referred to as Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory?!  Or do you just have some kind of fancy Special Edition that the rest of us don't know about Scott?  ;)

BTW, I've just been updating my original post back on the first page, so swing back there to catch my most recent DVD acquisitions (if anyone cares)...

Also, here's some more updated rumors/confirmation of the Indy trilogy from TheDigitalBits.com (maybe this is old news):

3/3/03

Here's some additional corroboration to the rumor we've been reporting about The Indiana Jones Trilogy FINALLY coming to DVD later this year from Paramount and Lucasfilm. In an interview with In Focus magazine (which is a publication for theater owners), writer/director Lawrence Kasdan (the man who scripted both Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Empire Strikes Back) has let on that the Indy DVDs ARE indeed in the works. Here's the relevant passage:

[Question] Now, you told Starlog in 1981 about your “Raiders” script rewrite: “A little bit of my script's logic and character development fell out along the way.” What was missing? And will it show up on the Indiana Jones DVDs?

[Kasdan] I don't think so. [laughs] Actually, I ran into Frank Marshall over the holidays, and he's working on that [DVD] collection. I don’t think there's going to be a lot of.... I don't know what they have planned. They obviously made a lot of smart decisions about what should be in the movie and what shouldn't.

When you're a beginning writer, you know, you hurt for everything that's lost. After you've directed 10 movies, you see that you cut stuff for a reason.

Click here to read the complete interview at In Focus. Thanks to the MANY Bits readers who sent this in. Slowly but surely, the evidence is mounting that old Indy will indeed be cracking his whip in your home theaters before the year is out.

Stay tuned...
Title: Re:Your DVD Collection
Post by: SilverZ on March 5, 2003, 03:57 PM
Indy certainly sounds like its happening this year. It's the one last great thing I'm waiting for on DVD, and if it took any longer, my interest would have fallen away, kind of like the OT right now. I'd rather now wait for E4-6 on a Hi-Def disc format.

We taped Raiders off of ABC-HD last fall and they showed it at 2:35:1 in 720p. I've never seen the movie look as good as it did then, and the old laserdiscs just weren't that hot, so I'm betting the new DVDs utilize the new transfers shown last year. They shouldn't disappoint.

"Asps. Very dangerous."
Title: Re: Your DVD Collection
Post by: JediMAC on March 5, 2003, 04:09 PM
I definitely want the Indy flicks on DVD as well (been watching enough of them on basic cable over the last month or so)!  But the problem for me is that I like to buy COMPLETE box sets for any given film franchise, once all of the sequels (or prequels) have run their course.  If they put out a 3 DVD Indy boxset this year, it will soon become obsolete when Indy 4 hits theaters in a couple of years.  I think I'm unfortunately going to have to wait 'til Indy 4 hits DVD as well and the REAL complete Indy boxset is issued.

I'm not that patient with the Star Wars saga though.  I'll take anything that they put out!   :D

Way ahead of ya' Scott, but thanks for the head's up!  Snagged West Side Story on DVD the day it came out.  $28 at Target - pretty dang pricey set, but well worth it for this great classic.  I'll join the Harry Potter bandwagon here (or as Scott calls him - Henry Portner).  Haven't picked up the DVDs yet, but the wife and I dig the movies.  She's read all the books (just the first one for me so far), and she's already got her 40% off pre-order waiting at Borders for the next one.  It's a fun franchise...   :)

I need to update my DVDs here as well, but have just been too lazy of late...   :-\

I'm in the same boat here Dale.  Been collecting DVDs for almost 4 months now and have about 75 or so, but I have no freaking DVD player yet!  I actually got one two Christmas's ago, but it wasn't quite "up to my standards", so I returned it and never replaced it.   :-\

I'm trying to hold off on buying one and hooking it up until we move in the next month or two so I can just plug it in 10x easier when our entertainment center and all of it's stuff is not in place and against the wall already...

I haven't quite started my DVD collection just yet, but I am preparing to join the new millenium and pick up a DVD player finally.  I like to get pretty nice stuff when it comes to electronics, so what brands/models do you guys suggest I look into?  Any that I should avoid?

I just hope that George Lucas pulls his head out of his butt and puts the original trilogy out on DVD soon.  Absurd to have to make everyone wait this long.  And I want the original theatrical versions, in addition to the Special Editions where GL made some pretty lame changes.

I just want to mention one here that I just got this weekend at the Chiller convention in NJ. It's a movie called Battle Royale- a Japanese film about 40- some-odd young teenagers who are kidnapped and taken to a remote island to play a game. The game is that they must kill eachother until there is only one person left- the winner. I just watched this today, and was totally blown away. If you like blood n' guts, but artfully done, and are not squeamish, you MUST buy this dvd- the Director's Cut special edition. It is so fantastic, I could puke from sheer joy. Now THAT'S good.  :)

You were at Chiller this weekend?  Weird!  It's a small world, because I was at the show, too.

CC, I've been meaning to ask you for some time, because this film seems like it might appeal to your "darker" tastes ;)

Have you ever seen Begotten? It is E. Elias Merhige's first film. He also directed Shadow of the Vampire. If you want to spend some time in your evening thinking "What in the hell is going on here?!?!", then you definately need to see this movie. When it comes to movies, I am not soft at the slightest, but this movie bugged me...

CC...that almost sounds like a short story I read in high school about an island where you went to hunt man, which I think had something to do with the Island of Doctor Moreau too, sounds like Survivor to the Max!

That story was called "The Hunter" or something like that, man, I read that in 7th grade and it got me thinking deep stuff... very cool story.

My DVD library will soon gain a new addition, I won "Birth of a Nation" on DVD for a little under 7 bucks on EBAY... I havent seen a silent film before, and I figured this one is infamous enough that it MUST be the first I watch. I'll let you guys and gals know when I get it, and also give a review, as this movie is really a 50/50 movie, apparently...

Very touchy subject matter, but I must say, despite the fact that the movie is 3 hours of silence... I was completely emersed in the movie... Incredible movie, taking into acount it's almost 100 years old. BTW- I picked this up for $7... Awesome deal. *

Going to buy :
A Bridge Too Far, A View To A Kill, Batman, Bridge Over The River Kwai, Dick Tracy, Lord Of The Rings : The Two Towers, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, The Longest Day, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, X-Men 1.5...

Hey OCB, did you get the Classic Trilogy bootlegs in Special Edition form, or the theatrical release for?  I've heard that both are floating around out there.

Theatrical Release, non-SE, Malaysian Bootleggers, I don't have their most recent address (maybe someone else does) but last time I checked they didn't have the non-SE's in stock

EDIT: Here it is

I'd also recommend if you're a LOTR fan to pick up the TTT Screener which is very well done.  It was from an early edit as some scenes aren't totally complete...for the most part though worth the $10

Christmas Vacation is getting a widescreen special edition later this year (along with the first Vacation and Vegas Vacation.  I'm waiting for the new widescreen SE, which should be out sometime in the Oct-Nov-Dec timeframe.

And Scott, you know that, as of May 1st, all of the Toy Story DVDs have officially gone out-of-print now, right?  Now hurry out and pick up that Ultimate Toy Box set--it's kinda pricey, and it's been out for almost three years, but its still one of the finest DVDs you can buy today.

Fox would have to be crazy not to release one of their biggest cash-cows on DVD.  Expect it during the fourth quarter this year, probably during November.  Most of the really big summer event movies and high-profile catalog releases are usually released in November each year, before Thanksgiving.

BTW Matt, thanks for the Vacation tip a couple weeks ago.  I checked my receipt (which I always save), and still had a few days left before my 3 month return period was up, and since I hadn't opened my DVD up yet, I returned that bad boy!  I'm more than happy to patiently wait several months for a better product for this classic comedy...   8)

They just better include some nice deleted scenes or behind the scene footage of Christie Brinkley in the pool!   :-*

Hey, man, no problem.  That current DVD sucks and I'm glad I've held off on it.  Glad you were able to get rid of it, too.

Here's what I could find on the specs:

And fans of the Griswolds have a lot to look forward to on August 19th with National Lampoon's Vacation finally gets the special edition treatment. Remastered in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen, the audio is presented in its original English mono (a French dub is also included), and extras include an audio commentary by director Harold Ramis and a second cast reunion commentary with Chevy Chase, Beverly D'Angelo, Anthony Michael Hall and Dana Barrons. There are also the usual filmographies and trailers, and more to be announced Stay tuned, and retail is $19.95.

Don't know if we'll get any deleted scenes, but two commentaries, especially the "Griswold family" one, is very cool.  And finally in widescreen--should be great.

Very small collection because my DVD player isn't currently working well with my TV.  The red/yellow/white jacks on the TV are broken.  When I run the DVD through my VCR and then to the TV through the Cable connection, the picture goes bright then dark over and over again...  Anyways, here's my list:

I fed my little Predator fix and get the basic fullscreen version at Target today for $9.99. I plan on getting the "real" thing, I just reeeally wanted to see it tonight.

So, I'm up to like 20 DVD's again. I've got a fairly high turnover rate due to impulse buys, and the fact that I normally watch "UHF" once a week and I am satisfied movie wise.

Anyone else here use Guzzlefish (http://www.guzzlefish.com/) to keep track of your DVD collection?  It's a website that allows you to keep a database of your DVD collection, as well as your CDs and video games if you so desire.  It will even keep your "stats", such as the amount of money your collection is worth, the number of out-of-print discs you have, and who your "favorite" directors, actors, and film genres are, among other things.  You can also make a wishlist of titles that you want to get.

The site keeps a total of the statistics for the entire site, so you can see what the most popular DVD is (hint: it's the first movie in a trilogy which we're waiting for the third movie for), and you can also see what other users have got.  So, if you've got an album that you think you're the only person in the world that likes, you can find out if someone else has it, and see what other titles they've got that you might enjoy.

It's totally free, and for the most part, inputting titles is a breeze--all you have to do is type in the UPC number, and it's in.  Takes a little while if you've got a lot of stuff, but I'm glad I did it.

You can see my DVD collection here, if you want:

http://www.guzzlefish.com/collection.php?username=virex&mediatype=D

And there's also links to my CD and game collections there, at the top of the page.  (Oh, and save any snarky comments about the Playboy Anna Nicole Smith or Showgirls DVDs, will ya?  I've already made fun of them in my own self-deprecating way earlier in this thread.  Thanks.)  ;)

Here's (http://www.guzzlefish.com/collection.php?mediatype=D&username=mikeyd) my DVD collection in all its guzzlefish glory.

Very easy to use and update.  A few upc codes didn't work and some of my movies didn't have them due to being promotional items, but it's easy enough to look them up by title and add them to your collection.

Thanks again, Virex.

Hey, no problem.  Glad you guys like it (even had to put a couple of titles from your collection on my wish list, Mikey).  :)

You mentioned one of the two issues I have with Guzzlefish--the first being that a few of the UPCs didn't work.  I had that happen to me, too.

My other (bigger) problem is that for box sets (and this goes for both DVDs and CDs) that have multiple movies (or albums), they're only counted as one title.  So, like with the Die Hard box set for example, it only counts for one, while I personally count it as three, three different movies.

It has especially affected my CDs total, where I have several box sets with three, four, or five albums in them, that are only counted as one.  My Led Zeppelin: The Complete Studio Recordings box, which is nine albums, only counts as one on their list.

I've considered going back and taking the box sets out, and putting the individual albums in, as the number would be closer to what I actually have, but I'm still undecided on that.

Anyway, happy Guzzlefishing!   :P

I agree with you on how guzzlefish counts movies.  Before guzzlefish, I had everything listed in an excel spreadsheet where I labeled each movie individually (all three Godfather movies seperate, ditto with BttF, DH and the Godzilla box set, among others).  In excel, I have 146 movies.  On guzzlefish, 130.  No biggie, but they should count each as an individual movie.

i use dvd profiler for my collection as well (can be seen here (http://www.dvdprofiler.com/mc.asp?alias=jokabofe&type=O&sc=C&ls=D)) - but i have some issues with that software/website...

i collect alot of "odd" movies - mostly obscure/import/independent as well as "bootleg" horror movies - that they don't have on their list... i must have another 50 - 75 flicks in my collection that aren't listed on that page. anybody use anything else to catalog their collections, that might have a bigger library to choose from?
Title: Re: Your DVD Collection
Post by: SilverZ on April 7, 2004, 03:04 AM
They're all flawed in one way or another. Profiler seems to have the largest db, Guzzle has the best web interface, and DVDaff is the only one that counts boxset titles individually instead of counting the box as one title as far as I can tell. I have the same problem as you - I have a lot of region 2 Japanese discs that just don't show up in the db, and I have to create a listing for myself using the disc ID.

Title: Re: Your DVD Collection
Post by: Matt on July 24, 2004, 11:26 PM
Guzzlefish ain't perfect.  Not by a long shot.  There are probably a couple dozen things I have that still aren't on the site yet.

Plus, there's still that thing where they only count a box set as one title, no matter how many individual titles it may contain.

(Case in point:  Got a 15-disc Dylan CD set yesterday, added it in, and was so irritated that this nearly-$200 set only counted as one, that I went in and added them all in, individually.)

But the way I see it, none of the collection-catalog sites are perfect.  And I don't care enough to enter all the same crap in to two or three different sites, so Guzzlefish it is.  Plus, I love the stats.

I do hear you, though, Dave:  I had a few things I wanted to submit, too, but after looking at all of their silly requirements, I just said screw it.

Title?
UPC?
Year?
Mother's maiden name?
Social Security number?
First pet?
Favorite food?
Shoe size?
Title: Re: Your DVD Collection
Post by: jokabofe on July 24, 2004, 11:29 PM
yeah, guzzlefish seems like the coolest one, like you said those stats are really cool. dvd profiler gives similar stats, but only offline, and for your own collection.

the part that really turns me off to the 'fish is the part about how much crap is mandatory to enter. i mean, is all the stuff really neccesary? yes, on dvd profiler you can add it if you want to, but it's not required. all that's required is the title.

and with the amount that i've added/am going to need to add going forward, that's the most i want to put in. although i am tempted to do the 'fish thing, it just... bothers me to put all that crap in there. they suck.

Title: Re: Your DVD Collection
Post by: jokabofe on July 26, 2004, 09:28 PM
okay, with all this talk about dvd collections, i took a look at my profiler and realized that is was way out of date. so over the past two days, i spent a few hours:

a) printing out my inventory list (18 pages)
b) going through my collection and looking for discs that are missing or discs that i hadn't listed
c) going back to the inventory database and deleting out all the crap my ex-wife took when we split (about 200 - 250 discs)
d) inputing all the new discs that had been left out

and, my collection list is completely up to date. before i give the link, i want to point something out: i like bad movies. there. i said it. also, when you check the list, keep this in mind: i am the dvd buyer for a retail store, so a lot of the discs i get are screeners. even if it's a crappy, direct to video with a $5 budget shot on vhs-c in the basement of my grandmother's house on the weekend with some friends from work that i don't really know but were kind enough to be in my movie, i watch it (at least once. or at least, i try to watch it.) and enter into my database.

anyway, that list can be seen here (http://www.intervocative.com/dvdcollection.aspx/jokabofe).

now, another quick question for you guzzlefish users... do you know if there is a way i can export this database and import it into guzzlefish instead of loading all my dvd's in there one at a time?

edit: oops, forgot to mention, while going through the collection, i found a couple of dupes (?) and discs that i upgraded. if anyones interested, $5 each:

rumble in the bronx
reservoir dogs (first version)
ronin
first wives club

Does anyone here have a hacked CueCat that they use to scan in all of their DVDs?

Furthermore, does anyone have any of the collecting software seen here:
http://www.collectorz.com/

I'm just way too damn lazy to manually type everything in, and I'm looking for a package that I can just use a hacked CueCat to scan everything (of course, I also need a hacked CueCat...)
Title: Re: Your DVD Collection
Post by: jokabofe on July 26, 2004, 11:01 PM
this is gonna sound like a dumb question, but why would you need a hacked version of the cuecat to scan your dvd's? i remember wired magazine sent me one of those things before they hit the market, and i was supposed to beta test it. but i read all these bad things about where it sends the info you scan, so that you can be put onto all kinds of mailing lists and stuff, and decided not to participate. or does the hacking remove that tracking stuff?

Yep.  Those are my only two peeves.  The one my friend has is nice since it counts your dvd's and your titles as two separate things - but I'm sticking with Guzzlefish.  It deflates my collection though because including bootlegs and boxed sets I've got more like 345-350 whereas the site says I've got 329.

Whatever though - it is what it is...

Title: Re: Your DVD Collection
Post by: JediMAC on May 12, 2005, 03:30 PM
I started "collecting" DVDs pretty gung-ho a couple years ago.  But about 6-8 months ago I got completely disenfranchised with all the DVDs that I'd bought all of the sudden becoming superceded and obsolete, with better editions coming out of practically everything I'd ever bought.  So I finally threw in the towel, and have been laying very low on the DVD front of late, just picking up the major must-have titles, like LOTR EE's and whatnot.

But I mentioned that I was "collecting" them, which I think is (embarrassingly) rather accurate, since I hadn't even opened about 75% of them.  It was just another collection for me, which was kinda dumb in hindsight.  Oh well.  I still have 'em all, probably about 300 or so.

I'll probably get back into DVDs next year, once all the ROTS hoopla has settled down a bit, hopefully freeing up a little more spending money.

I've watched 75% of what I have bought, because a lot of the times, I rent something and like it so much, if I ever find it, I'll buy it and just hang onto it. I buy most everything used. 75% of my collection are pawn shop purchases. Retail is reserved for new releases. I've added so many titles for $5 or less, thanks to pawn shops, including OOP stuff. It's just like the old days of SW hunts.

The number of movies I have really isn't important. I've come to find, I like a lot more movies than I had ever imagined, and finding so many for $4.99, considering the profit I make from selling them, the ones I get are essentially free to me, which makes it easier to show some leniency.
Title: Re: Your DVD Collection
Post by: Rob L on May 12, 2005, 06:32 PM
I have 28 DVDs in my collection.  They are all Doctor Who discs and I need to buy them all to maintain the “set”. To this end I have another 6 DVDs in a box set on their way which are Region 1 and not available in the UK.  They have different cover designs which set them apart from the standard British releases so I hope I don’t develop a side line which could involve getting ALL the US R1 discs! The Who DVDs are “collected” because, just like with Star Wars figures, it’s very important to own them all regardless of whether I actually like them or not.

I have about 20 other DVDs which are just things to watch rather than collectables.  I don’t feel the need to have any more discs as most films are shite and not worth playing more than once.

So here’s my collection:

Title: Re: Your DVD Collection
Post by: Rob on May 13, 2005, 12:03 AM
I haven't watched all of mine - not even close.  Now, I've SEEN most of the movies that I have - but I'd say 30 to 40% of mine haven't been watched since I bought them.  Which tranlsates into somewhere in the neigborhood of 150 to 200 DVDs.   :P

But it's about options for me - the option to never go to blockbuster on any given night should the need arise.  It's also a collection, I like to own my favorite movies.  It's also a reference library - lots of times I use DVDs at work for reference on various projects.

I just simply don't have a third of the free time that it would require to watch every movie that I want to watch, read every book I want to read, play every video game I want to play, still be social, still spend time with my dogs and girlfriends, still go to work, and still get some sleep - so there you have it, I have books, video games, and movies that I haven't gotten to yet and in many cases likely never will.

I remember that. I think I've adopted your way of thinking, Rob. As of late, I've been walking into Hollywood Video and right back out, empty handed, all because I've seen all they have..literally, and I can just go home and swipe one of my favorite movies off of the shelf.

Now, 2,700 isn't impressive, infact, it's scary, IMO. I can't think of 1,000 movies that have a tremendous rewatch value. Personally, I don't entertain others, I'm not social at all, so I get what I like, watch them whenever, and that's how it goes. I've learned to stop buying those movies that I like even moderately. Just ones I can get cheap, will watch again, and will compliment other sections of my library. (i.e. got the 2 disc UE of "Legend" 2 days ago to build up my "Fantasy" branch)

Wowzers, thanks for that pic Dave, my wife thinks we're crazy for having the 70 that we have.  As to the original question, I think we have watched pretty much all (or at least most) of the DVDs we have.  When we purchase movies, we pretty much watch them that night or the following weekend, so I think we've seen each movie at least once.  We also have several TV season sets, which I'm pretty sure we haven't seen all of.  Most, but not all.  There are a number of DVDs that I look back now and realize I didn't need, and that we'll probably never watch.  When we first got our player, we wanted to have some movies, so went out and purchased a couple just to have...now we probably couldn't give them away :P.  It has become somewhat of a "collection" to us as well though.  I've always been very interested in movies overall, and that is probably our favorite "date thing" to do...catch a movie, or rent some.  Some of your collections here are very impressive....400, 500, 1400!  Wow.  That's a lot of stuff to watch.

One thing that has to be taken into consideration is that I am the DVD buyer for the store I work at, so a few of those are actually "free" promotional discs. The only bad part about those is the fact that I have to watch them...

I would say I've watched about 97% of the DVD's in my collection. Again, most of them I had to watch for my job.

I was going to call you a traitor, because I didn't see SW, but you took them out of the big silver box.
 ;)

I'm going to get up a pciture of my collection soon.

Yeah, I have a seperate section for boxed sets in Rack 2, Section 14. SW is well represented in the library, though. 1,2,4,5,6, Clone Wars, Ewok movies, Stars of Star Wars Interview DVD..
Title: Re: Your DVD Collection
Post by: iFett on July 12, 2007, 02:23 AM
I haven't used my DVDprofiler for the past few years and now you need to pay $30 for all of it's features...Are there any others out there that are still "free"?  I'm reaching my limit (I think) and I've yet to watch at least 40% of my collection, but here it is in all it's glory in case you're really bored for some reason.. I think that this post may almost rival a photo novel in its length.

I know that I'm eventually going to have to replace all of these with BluRay/HD in the years to come, but I'm happy with the format I have for the time being..

I haven't used my DVDprofiler for the past few years and now you need to pay $30 for all of it's features...Are there any others out there that are still "free"?

I'm not sure how many features you're looking for (I'm not familiar with DVDprofiler), but I've used DVD Aficionado for the last while for tracking my collection.  They recently moved to a new domain, dvdaf.com (http://www.dvdaf.com), but I've always found them easy to use.

That's who I used, but was unaware of the domain switch.  They didn't transfer over the list and I have to reenter all of them again?

I'll have to try it.

You can have your list transferred over, that's what I did:

I recently upgraded my DVD Profiler from the free version to the $30 version.  The membership is good for life and it really is a nice little program.

I am thinking of doing this as well. It may be worth it.

Thanks for the info.  I thought the $30 "upgrade" was like a yearly subscription, but if it's for life then I think it's a really good deal.  I haven't used it in years, but I liked how I could just enter a week's worth of DVD UPC's into the program and it would just pull EVERYTHING and update my inventory.  It was fantastic  :)

Same here ... except mine is on an Excel spreadsheet.

It never really occurred to me to make a list of my DVD's. In the end, I don't have huge collection though. I try to limit my purchases to films I know I can watch over and over and over again.

Just added it to my collection, bringing my tally to 139.  Currently using DVDSpot to catalogue my collection.

I'm still using DVDAF.com.  Last I looked I'd passed the 900 mark.   :(

I use DVDAF.com as well, I think I just passed 300 DVDs last month.

Our latest addition was for family movie time:

I haven't had time to log all of my DVDs into an online database yet, but I would like to get around to it eventually.  I think I've topped 1100 this weekend with the following:

Apocalypto
Blades of Glory
Disturbia
Ghost Rider (2 Disc Set)
The Grudge 2
The Hills Have Eyes (06) Unrated
The Hills Have Eyes 2 Unrated
The Man in the Iron Mask
Robocop: Ressurection - Prime Directives **Probably lame, but I loved the first two flicks
Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning Unrated

**Newly added G for those who are interested**

The Grude 2

that was a really disappointing follow up to The Grude, i thought.

I'll probably never get around to watching it, but I couldn't pass it up for $2.50.  :)

Does the sequel have Sarah Michele Gelar in it?

Here's a "great" little review (http://www.the-grudge-2-movie.com/spip.php?article18636) on the flick.  Pretty sure I heard that she has a 2-3 minute cameo or something like that.

I don't get the whole upper/lower case/mispelling thingy - but I'm sure this is something that arose from the Pit...no?

Spelling corrected per your requests.  Seems I got caught up in some lame joke.  Ha - I'm ready to throw more DVD's at you with more ncorrect spellings so be warned  ;)

ncorrect is a funny word, huh?
