Watto's Junk Yard / Re: Considering Unmoderated Forum
« on: July 26, 2007, 06:20 PM »
I say we put restrictions on who could post.  Say 1000 posts or more.  Or 1 year of membership.

I know it sounds harsh but hey, it's a benefit -- similar to Yakpoints.

I disagree, in part. Arbitrary criteria for acceptance might serve as a disincentive for new, qualified posters to join the fold. I, personally, favor administrational discrimination with regards to:

1) Age (Cap it at 16, at the very least, with considerations towards people who petition for an exception)
&
2) Recent Post History (last 6-12 months)

Hey Chris,

I cannot frankly imagine how, if the contributors understand and agree that what happens in the "UMF" remains exclusively in the "UMF", such a forum would be anything less than beneficial to the site. I'm in favor, as I would love to participate in some political discussions.

30th Anniversary Collection / Re: Army Building - PT vs OT
« on: July 23, 2007, 07:37 PM »
I personally do not discriminate between the two trilogies, but I do have a slight bias towards the Empire/Republic. My army building really turned down in 2005, however, after I got my fill of the ROTS clones. So far as that is concerned, I've never been too interested in the specific divisions/rainbow colors from the get-go. So, for my Phase II Army, I accumulated 45 "plain" troopers (41s and Quick-Draw) and a various number of others. I have a few Utaupau troopers (whom, actually, I've turned into a squad of "Pan Imperialist" militants from the Outer Rim), 4 shocks, and a 10-man squad from Kyyshyk (spelling evades). I would do a squad of Galactic Marines, but I frankly don't see the economy in buying figures for the sake of buying them (I've kind of dropped out of the game.)

Jedijaybird is correct, I do hereby retract my previous statement.  :-*

I caught these for the first time last week in Chicago (Target @ South Loop), but did not purchase them. No Snowtroopers whatsoe'er = No Good whatsoe'er.

Billy Ray;

The Obi-Wan in question appears to be the April 23rd basic release from the 2002 line (the one with the Assassin Droid and the metal hand), to me at least.

To the Floor;

I find myself suprisingly fond of this set, as it is really something which should have long ago been released. I sincerely doubt that I'll pick it up, but the concept is sound. Too bad the figures are so terrible.

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: JD Book Club: What Are You Reading Now?
« on: July 12, 2007, 09:33 PM »
I've been alternating of late. Finished Niall Furgeson's brilliant "The War of the World: Twientieth Century Conflict and the descent of the West" a few weeks ago, am now reading Huxley's "Brave New World" (I've thus far been disappointed), Remnick's "Lenin's Tomb: The Last Days of the Soviet Empire", and re-reading (for simple enjoyment) Peter Hopkirk's "The Great Game: The Struggle for Empire in Central Asia".

All rather good.

So because my business card has the word "marketing" on it, my opinions as a collector no longer stand? :)
I never claimed that they were somehow invalidated as a result of your position, so no.  :)

You don't have to agree, and based on how well Clones are still selling given that they ship in huge, obscene numbers in the 30th Anniversary Collection (and the Saga Collection, and that Delta Squad set), well, there's definitely interest in them still, despite what a few posts on this thread may say.

This is a fact that I have previously acknowledged. However, why discount the so-called "few posts" of this thread? Whilst they are in fact minority opinions, they are nevertheless as valid as those of the majority. We're consumers too, afterall.

There's still a real interest in troopers and armored Star Wars figures in general, aside from aliens and droids, that's my favorite segment.   But hey, I like those goofy Target troopers we're going to get this Fall too.
I doubt anyone would deny that there is still a sincere interest in troopers in the Star Wars line. Yet, when a specific kind of trooper is produced in far greater quantities than others (id est, the Phase II/ROTS Clones), the risk of oversaturating the market should be appearant. I'm not saying that it will happen with this set (it is, in fact, rather unlikely to happen as a result of this set), but eventually the majority of consumers of which you spoke earlier will increasingly come to tire of the product. I think that has already happened to a certain degree, as evidenced by some of the posts in this thread. It isn't healthy for the brand, essentially.

Call me a sucker.
An argumentum ad hominem is quite often indicative of a lack of substance to said argument. No need for them here, mate! I certainly wouldn't seek to belittle your collecting habits, anyhow. Everyone has their own peculiarities (I like Death Star Troopers and Senators, for example.)

I hope that this is the last clone.
I like it though.

You're in marketing, though. Should it not concern you that at least part of your consumer base's demand for Clonetroopers has been exhausted? While it may not be so for the majority of your potential customers... I think the reactions in this thread pretty clearly indicate that some of the older hands of the hobby aren't so pleased with yet more clone repaints. Eventually, the demand will be exhausted elsewhere.

I'm not trying to jump your ****, but how many more clones can we expect from this set? 3/14 is understandable. 7/14 probably will likely deter some folks from buying (mir selbst included, yo.)

The two Mandos are exciting, however. I will continue to hold out hope for this set to amount to something more than a few repainted Republic Commandos and Phase II troopers (and, Adam, you were right about the next figure being worthwhile ... Rev is grand!)

The first 224 were the best!

Especially 1981-1989.

Anyone else a great fan of Teddy Roosevelt's administration?

Ack! Kobayashi defeated? Damned. I remember going to Nathan's in 2004 for the contest, Eric Badlands Booker was my favorite of them all.

Whereas the most recent Independence Day thread is buried on page 20, and whereas the topic of this thread isn't wholly germane to the other, a new topic has thus been created!

And so, it has been 231 years since the Thirteen Colonies declared their independence from Great Britain. Whilst the current state of our Republic is such that enthusiasm for tired nationalistic appeals is a rare commodity amongst even the most hardy of patriots, I am nevertheless glad to say that our nation continues to endure.

Happy July 4th, folks! Do be safe, also. Loosing fingers to fireworks, I'd imagine, is no fun.

(Canadians, our North American brethren! Feel free to join us in posting flag.gifs to celebrate our greatness!  :P)

I've had two Darktroopers in my life. I think I'll pick up 7 or so of this rehash to make a nice Squad. A boyhood dream, it is!

It was a rather good picture. I enjoyed it, at least (though, I suppose, I am somewhat taken with Pixar. They've really yet to disappoint me, Finding Nemo aside.)

No kidding?  I don't think I've heard much of anyone say they didn't like Finding Nemo.  I thought it was nicely done.  I agree that Pixar has been impressive to date, but after absolutely hating Cars I've been skeptical about Ratatouille.

John

And you didn't like Cars? Bei Gott! Different folks, different strokes, I guess.
