Title: How much are your monthly bills?
Post by: JediMAC on January 19, 2004, 12:19 AM
Cutting a bunch of checks right now for all of our monthly utilities and crap, and was curious how ours stacked up against other people's bills around the country(s).

So how much are your monthly bills?  You can leave out the mortgages, cars, and serious stuff like that if you want.  Here's what ours are averaging per month of late:

Electric: $70

Gas: $35

Water: $12

Regular Phone: $40

Cell Phones (two): $65

Cable TV w/ HBO + Showtime & Cable modem (which we're not even using yet): $80

Car Insurance (two cars): $107

Wife's student loans: $326   ::)

Home Owner's Association fees: $250   >:(

Two storage units: $150

Cars: $0 (both paid off)

Credit Card:  A lot (food, gas, shopping, entertainment, etc.), but we pay it off in full every month.

House:  Too much.   :'(
-----------------------------------

Total: $1,135 + mortgage + credit card = Ouch!   :P

hmmm, here's how mine break down at this point:

rent: $850
phone: $50
cell phone: $30
pse&g: $300
cable tv & internet service: $135
student loan: $50
food: $250
car insurance: $70
entertainment: $400

total = $2135

**notes:
rent: yes, i pay a lot in rent, but i like my apartment. it's 5 rooms, and i live alone, so i have lots of space to myself. bedroom/living room/computer room/toy room/kitchen/bathroom.

pse&g bill is so high because... ??? it's been like that for the past few months... it's been really cold, and stuff, but i don't think that can be right. i have the guy from pse&g coming down next week to check out my meters and see if one of them is busted or something.

student loan is $50 because of some kind of payment plan i signed up for. the payments are $50 a month for the first 3 years (?) and then it goes up to $125... which should be shortly.

food: i average about $60 - $70 a week for groceries, i try to make my lunch and bring it to work with me everyday, this way it saves me a few bucks. otherwise i'm spending like $8 - $10 a day for lunch when i go to the fast food restaurants by my job.

entertainment: talk about wasting money. this pretty much covers just about anything that i buy - magazines, movies, toys... whatever. and i'm forever renting movies in blockbuster... plus my weekly - and sometimes twice a week - trips to the local pub. i usually spend about $100 a week on miscellaneous crap, so that all goes under "entertainment".

the really sad thing is that this all totals up to $2135 a month, and that's pretty much to the penny what i take home in a given month. sometimes it can be a little more, if i work any extra days, or any extra hours, but that pretty much about covers it. no wonder i don't ever have any extra money at the end of the week  :P

hmmm, here's how mine break down at this point:

blah, blah, blah...

entertainment: $400

blah, blah, blah...

entertainment: ...this pretty much covers just about anything that i buy - magazines, movies, toys...

Uh... Dave?  Might want to rethink that number there...   :P

update 1/7

$60.33 - biker scout & ewok 2 pack 12" ($52.51 figures + $6.93 shipping + $.89 money order fee) - from our own bobabinks right here in our forum (thanks david!!)

year to date total - $363.33

 :o

this is gonna get expensive  ;D

We're just 2/3rds of the way through January, and that amount doesn't even include about $200 worth of stuff that I'm going to be sending you this week!   ;D   :-*

Cool deal on the 5 room pad though!

I will not count Star Wars or entertainment, because that's something different....but I spend about:

100 power
20 water
--
32 phone
25 cell phone
32 DSL
(All so low because the g/f gets employee discounts)
--
111 for Cable
50 or so for garbage (Bill comes every 3 months and fluxes)
65 or so on gas

That's only 465 in monthlies.

Then I have:

Entertainment, savings, a couple of mortgages and of course food.  On top of all that I still manage to find money to blow on SW guys.

$111 for Cable

Damn!  What the hell kinda cable are you getting Josh?!  I'd assume that's the uber-complete digital cable package with HBO, Showtime, Cinemax, Playboy, NBA TV, etc., etc., etc...  You got a bunch of PPVs on there too?  Yikes!

And that's only $435 in monthlies, not that I checked your number or anything...   :P

Mortgage $1000
bank loan $400
Gas     $179
Hydro  $70
Property tax $265
Phone  $45
Cable  $92
Gasoline $400
Car Insurance $198 (2 cars)
cell    $5 (most is paid by work which accounts for 95% of airtime)
Water $30 (filling pool in summer makes the average higher)
Daycare $350
Food $300

Total $3334 :o  Yep, that ruined my day.  It doesn't include credit cards either.  We try to pay them off each month, but this time of year tends to slide for a bit.

Oops -
Life insurance $30
House insurance $60

New total $3394

Rent - 715
Car - 483
Insurance - 286 (1 car) (I hate NJ)
Cable + Modem- 118
electric-  65
phone- 80
MISC bills 350 (loans and such)
Food 220 (Month)
Gas - 50

TOTAL - 2367
That is a lot, especially since it is just me.

Post by: chuckles on January 19, 2004, 05:08 PM
rent - $1255
2 car payments - $684
car/homeowners insurance - $150
school loan (less than one yr left  ;D) - $100
cable - $35
electric & gas - varies but on avg lets say $110
phone - $45
cell phones - $70
internet w/cable hookup - $55

Right there is just over $2500 and that doesn't include food, gas, entertainment, toys or anything towards CC's. So I guess we probably run in the $3000+ range for monthly bills over the course of a month (depending on what I spend on toys   ;) ).

Yeah. I have a thing with falling asleep to the TV at night, and it's best if it's a movie I've seen. I know, I know, I could just get DVD in my room and save a lot of money, but this is what I do in the meantime. I spring for the total package in 3 rooms. I do like a lot of shows on HBO too, so it's worth it in it's own weird way.

Just the regular monthly crap:

Rent - $750
Electric - $35
Gas - $15
Water - $10
Phone - $25
Cell Phone - $45
Cable and DSL - $90
Car - $215
Car Insurance - $60

Total - $1,245

Not too bad for now, but I expect those numbers to go up quite a bit later this year or early next year when the bride to be and I start house hunting.   8)

well, looks like you missed the next few updates, 'cause my total so far is up to $605.49 for this year, not including the $200+ worth that i'm waiting for from you... but that doesn't really count towards monthly expenses, because i certainly don't spend this much on a monthly basis. i had some extra money from working like 70 hours a week for the month of december, plus i had some christmas and birthday money left over.  :P

I have no idea, the wife handles the finances. The last two checks I wrote were for shipping and handling on a DVD offer two weeks ago and a check for Matt for some clonetrooper 3 packs two months ago.  As long as I get my "allowance" every week, then I'm happy.  However, if I had to guess, then probably somewhere between $2,500 and $3,000 / month excluding entertainment costs.

Uh-oh...  I'd recommend checking your credit card statements Mikey, just to make sure the ratio of women's shoes and clothing to your Star Wars toys are staying in the same ballpark!  If they're even remotely out of whack, you should ask for a higher allowance!   :P

$425 rent
$233 car payment
$112 car insurance
$30 phone
$40 cable
$50 student loans

$890 total.

Health insurance is taken care of by my employer.

Whatever's left I eat and do ill-advised spending with. I save some, but clearly not as much as I'd like. Between this thread and the Collector's Challenge, I'm seriously reconsidering  my spending habits.

I just knew I was going to get a comment to that effect.  It actually works out pretty good.  We're both down to one credit card now and we rarely use them.  All's mine for is internet purchases, which to tell you the truth isn't all that much.  And she hardly uses hers anymore.  Honestly, she has to watch out more for my spending habits then I do of hers.  She doesn't have a hobby like I do (or at least one that costs a lot of money).  So it all works out in the end.
