Title: Your Picks: Five Movies
Post by: Brian on November 18, 2005, 03:04 PM
This is inspired by an episode from this season's "The Office" in which they played a game called "Desert Island", and talked about picking things like "if you were on a desert island and could only watch one movie the rest of your life....", etc.  Expanding that a little bit, if you could only choose five movies to watch, which five would you pick?  Up to you whether you want to use the "Star Wars Saga" or movies individually, same for other franchises.  I suppose the right way would be to use the movies individually, but that makes it tougher.  For the sake of argument, we'll say you can use any movie, regardless of if it is available on DVD/VHS, etc.  I'll have to give this some thought myself, but I just wanted to get the ball rolling and see what some people's choices would be.

On an island all by myself for the rest of my life?

1 - porn
2 - porn
3 - porn
4 - porn
5 - The 5th Element (because I can watch that film constantly and never get sick of it)

I'd have to pick all educational films about island survival, etc, etc. If I had any spaces left after that, I have to go with Bill's choice and pick some porn.

Unless of course this is one of those islands where you are stranded whatever celebrity you selected years ago. In that case...I guess I could skip the porn.

Top five movies in other words. That's tough. I'd have to go with:

Empire Strikes Back
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Army of Darkness
Shawshank Redemption
Star Trek III: the Search for Spock

Caddyshack
The Blues Brothers

Just bumping this up to see if anyone else wants to chime in.  I changed the original title, so it doesn't have to be a "desert island" scenario :).  Basically, if you had to pick five movies (most likely your favorites) to watch the rest of your life, which ones would make the cut?  I'm leaning towards making lists without the thinking of "I've seen this movie so many times I have it memorized, so I'll leave that one off" - which five movies would you want to watch and rewatch the most?  Again, if you want to leave "franchises" (Star Wars, Indy, Harry Potter, Alien, etc.) as one you can, or you can split them up (tough, but probably more "accurate").  Anyone else have lists?  I'm still thinking about it here, because honestly the movies I watch the most now (and are my favorites) are often parts of franchises.

I'm all over this one:

1. Star Wars Saga
2. Lord of the Rings Trilogy
3. Shawshank Redemption
4. Braveheart
5. The Usual Suspects

Honorable Mention:

-Caddyshack
-Jaws
-Matrix Trilogy
-Tombstone

I know I have more, but those are the ones that I ALWAYS watch when they are on.  I've cheated with the franchises, but at least with LOTR, it's one continuous timeline broken up over 3 movies  ;).

1. Star Wars OT
2. Back to School
3. Seems Like Old Times
4. Jay & Silent Bob box set
5. Animal House

I'll go with the "Cheat" of listing a couple Trilogies...

1.  Tombstone
2.  The John Ford/John Wayne Cavalry Trilogy (Fort Apache, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, Rio Grande)
3.  HBO's Band of Brothers
4.  Monty Python and the Holy Grail
5.  Star Wars OT.

I'm going to do this without cheating, so I won't be using any trilogies, TV seasons, miniseries, or anything else that isn't one film. The first four are easy choices for me.

1. Empire Strikes Back
2. Serenity
3. Gladiator
4. Black Hawk Down
5. LOTR Return of the King

The first four were easy choices for me. ESB is the best movie of all time and I love Serenity. I've seen Gladiator and Black Hawk Down probably close to 20 times each and I never get sick of them. The fifth choice was a little more difficult for me to make. I couldn't decide if I'd like a comedy type movie to break up the action theme I had going. Ultimately though I settled on ROTK, I watchit enough without getting sick of it. While stuck on an island it would be nice to have fantasy/escapist type movies, which four of the five are to get me off the island, at least mentally, for a few hours at a time.

Ok if I don't Cheat....Ryan made me feel guilty...

1. Tombstone
2. She wore a Yellow Ribbon
3. Saving Private Ryan
4. MP and the Holy Grail
5. Star Wars (or "A New Hope" to all you folks who saw on video or the DVD the first time)

But if these are DVD's does this mean we can also have the option of watching with foreign languages and Closed Captions?  I'd like to learn Spanish, French or any other languages that are available on various DVD's...not sure I would get fluent, but I could get some conversational phrases out of it.

1. Jedi - This was the first flick I ever saw in theatres and it holds a special place in my heart

3. The 5th Element - I'm borrowing here but I love this movie everytime I see it and I can't get enough for some reason
4. LOTR Extended Cut Trilogy - I have them all but haven't watched them in there extended goodness
5. (The) Crow - This movie meant a lot to me while growing up as a teen

I'll hold this as a distant 6th:

6. Hellraiser (1-4) Pinhead is my alltime fav horror character and the cenobites are just plain wicked.

In no particular order...

Star Wars IV A New Hope

I honestly have no idea Justin, but it's like watching that movie for the first time everytime I see it.  It's very rare that I can get that much playback from a movie.

Well actually, I feel the same way, but its likely due to the fact that I fall asleep from boredom 15 minutes into the flick....  ;)

I'm not going to bother listing Star Wars, since I think it goes without saying for all of us here. Though if I had to pick just one of the six, it would be ROTJ.

I have also limited myself to one each from the LOTR and Indy series so they don't completely take over. :P

My five:

The Big Lebowski
Casino
Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade
Kingdom of Heaven
LOTR: Return of the King Extended Edition

Title: Re: Your Picks: Five Movies

Yeah, its really tough to pick five alone.  I'll go with two lists as well, but even then its tough.  Here's if I go the "franchise" route:

1.  Star Wars Franchise (leaning more towards OT overall)
2.  Indiana Jones Franchise
3.  Lord of the Rings Trilogy
4.  Spider-Man Trilogy/Franchise
5.  Harry Potter Franchise

Then, going by individual movies, I'll try to keep it fair and limit it to only one movie per franchise (otherwise the OT would take up 3 of 5 probably).  Here's my favorites, and some honorable mentions:

1.  The Empire Strikes Back (always a tough choice here)
2.  Raiders of the Lost Ark
3.  Fellowship of the Ring (tough choice, but I remember just being amazed the first time I saw this in the theater - especially not being overly familiar with the books yet at that point)
4.  Spider-Man 2
5.  Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (although I enjoy all of them)

Honorable Mentions - Batman Begins, The Goonies, The Incredibles, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Christmas Vacation, Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion..., X2: X-Men United, Transformers - the list goes on.

My favorite might not necessarily be "award winners", but I love movies that just entertain - and these fit the bill for me.  I'd watch pretty much any of them whenever they are on TV, and the DVDs get regular viewings as well.

After recently seeing again a couple of these below, I've been trying to think of what exactly is my favorite movie...here are the 5 contenders...

The Iron Giant

It has been a long time since I've seen this but we recently watched it again one rainy afternoon, it is just so great on so many levels.  The animation is top shelf, the story is wonderful and the end couple of scenes are fantastic.

The Empire Strikes Back

I remember distinctly sitting in my hometown movie theater as a 5 year old boy with my mouth dropped open the entire time.    AT-AT's, Yoda, Lando, Hoth, the Lightsaber Duel, Vader...I cried like a 5 year old should when Han got frozen.  My friends and I talked about this movie and how it would all turn out for years.  I got the Falcon for my birthday in 81, probably the best present I ever got.  It probably was my favorite movie for a long ass time but it no longer holds the throne.   Star Wars burn out, prequels revisionism, EU etc etc etc have sort of dimmed the star a little.  My boys and I have watched I, II and IV...we'll see what they think of V.  The other films are right up there but Empire trumps them all and always will

Fight Club

I will maintain Fight Club was one of the worst marketing efforts of all time.  Having Brad Pitt in every commercial say "I want you to hit me as hard as you can" over and over became a joke and there was no way I was going to ever see it.  That being said, when I finally did see it, not knowing any of Chuck Palahniuk's book are plot I was absolutely blown away.  It is a great "guy" film and one I watch whenever I see it on cable.

Caddyshack

Anyone who plays golf regulary knows pretty much every line in this flick.  It is that classic and I can laugh almost every single time I see it...

E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial

Me and my boys watched this about a month ago and I just love absolutely everything about it...to me, the all time best scene in movies is the last good-bye between Elliott and E.T.  I tear up each and every time it happens, Williams score blazing in the background.  It is both kid friendly and adult and to me, it has totally changed from my childhood to adulthood and the themes and story are different.  I remember being Elliott, the little kid with Star Wars figures and a brother and sister with a semi disfunctional family who escaped to the back yard woods and dreamed of fighting Russians, finding pirate treasure and meeting aliens.  I played that out over and over again...it is probably why I like Iron Giant so much as well because it is basically the same story with a Robot instead of an alien.  It took my personal top spot at the rerelease in 2002, it is just perfect

It is really, really hard to not have the LOTR trilogy and Indy on here but I just can't find a spot

1 & 2 - Easiest way to get all the movies there so I am not without a single one.
3. One of the greatest comedies in the world. I just about have the whole movie memorized, but I still laugh each and every time I watch it.
4. Explosions, guns, and swearing - The basis for any good action movie.
5. It was a toss up between Terminators, Indy and this one. I went with this one because I am huge baseball fan and because...

"Well, I believe in the soul, the ****, the *****, the small of a woman's back, the hanging curve ball, high fiber, good scotch, that the novels of Susan Sontag are self-indulgent, overrated crap. I believe Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing Astroturf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, soft, wet kisses that last three days.

Goodnight"

A desert island movie list is kind of tough to distill.  But here are the movies that I find myself coming back to:

THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK - Probably the best film of the Saga.  And no doubt with the best ending of any of the movies.

GOODFELLAS - No doubt this is Scorcese's masterpiece, even if he did win the Oscar for "The Departed".  It's really epic in scope, spanning a generation.  Just the long shot alone when you make your way into the nightclub through the kitchen is a spectacular achievement in filmmaking.

THE BIG LEBOWSKI - This one just gets better with every viewing.  It's hilarious and blends stoner culture with a film noir story.

LAWRENCE OF ARABIA - Arguably one of the best films ever made.  And definitely an epic.

ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND - Such an amazing movie.  I've never seen Jim Carrey act better than he did in this role.  The premise is amazing.  The cast overall is very cool.  And the situations that the story carries you through are surreal and astounding.  And mmmmm...Kate Winslet!

Men in Black
Napoleon Dynamite
Nacho Libre
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
Star Trek: First Contact

We've actually been discussing this at work lately, and it made me think of this thread again.  I always enjoy reading what everyone's favorites are (and why), and just thought I'd bump this up again.  It seems like everyone has at least one Star Wars movie on the list (often Empire), but I'm wondering - with all the hit and miss enjoyment of the prequels, do those movies make your list?  If so, how far down would they be?  Would it take a Top 10, Top 20, or further?  Also, do you feel like you get more nostalgic with these types of lists, including movies from your childhood/teenage years - or do you include more recent movies?

I'm kind of re-assessing my favorites overall right now, but I know I have a tough time leaving out any of the OT movies from a list.  Empire is always my favorite, but I think the original Star Wars is such a nicely done movie that can really stand on its own.  I think of it like "what if there wasn't ever any sequels?" - well, it would still be a really awesome movie simply called "Star Wars".  I have fond memories of ROTJ as well, and it holds sway being the first movie I can remember seeing in the theaters, going with my Dad.  This thread was originally titled "Five Movies", but if anyone would like to expand their list to 10 (or more), feel free.  It is always fun to read.

If I could do franchises it would be easier, let's say five boxed sets:

1 Star Wars Saga
2 LOTR
3 Harry Potter
4 Mallrats
5 Office Space

If I had to pick individual movies I'd go with:

1 Star Wars: ANH
2 LOTR: Fellowship
3 LOTR: Two Towers
4 LOTR: Return of the King
5 Mallrats

As much as I love Star wars, if I only had ANH I'd be okay, but I'd still want the whole LOTR trilogy

Mallrats is still my favorite Smith film.  It's as funny for its one-liners and odd look at relationships as it is for a then-unknown Ben Affleck playing sleazy mall store salesman Shannon Hamilton.

Classic:
Hammilton: You see, Bruce, I like to pick up girls on the rebound from a disappointing relationship. They're much more in need of solace and they're fairly open to suggestion. And, I use that to **** them some place very uncomfortable.
Brodie: What, like the back of a Volkswagen?

Personally, I think Mallrats is Kevin Smith's best movie.  Nothing else has achieved the craziness of that movie, and Jason Lee's character kills me.

Anyway, my 5 favourite movies:

1. Star Wars (A New Hope) - I still prefer it for its ability to stand alone.
2. Die Hard - Classic Bruce Willis action and attitude - yippie ki yay, mother...
3. Toy Story 2 - A movie about how kids loved their toys during their childhood.  Nuff said.
4. Ace Ventura - Jim Carey in his prime.
5. The Princess Bride - Ingenious writing - "anybody want a peanut?"  :D

Empire Strikes Back - (for obvious reasons)
Caddyshack/Fletch/Airplane (3 way tie) - if you can't laugh your ass off during any of these, you're dead inside
Fight Club - I saw this movie at a weird time in my life and it totally blew me away
Saving Private Ryan - if you don't cry like a baby at the end of this movie you're dead inside
Indiana Jones ROTLA - It's one of the best adventure/pop corn flicks evar! Still as enjoyable as the first time.

Honorable Mentions:
Superman I & II SE - the Donner SEs make these infinitely better than the original releases. Not to mention the soundtrack
ST: Wrath of Khan - Shatner/Montalban = awesome and again the soundtrack
LOTR Trilogy - possibly the best all around trilogy in terms of story and quality
The Dark Knight - best comic adaptation and Ledger's Joker is unbeatable
Rocky Saga (all except V) - come on it's Rocky!

and about a hundred others.  :)

Too tough an answer for me to figure out.  I'm over 2K dvds and haven't even watched the majority of them.....but I'll give something out

ROTJ (first movie I've ever saw at a theatre at age 5)  Best of the saga IMO - blew my mind
Casino (lived in Vegas for the most of my life, but not during this time...very cool)
Fifth Element (I could watch this over and over again for days on end for some reason and never get sick of it)

Can't quite figure out the other two and don't dig independent flicks very much....Will have to think about it.  I guess I picked up Mallrats a month or so ago at WM for $5 so I'll have to check that one out sometime.

**after reading through this thread I see my top 3 movies are still on top (in order) after all these years.   8)

Your fourth favorite is the LOTR Extended Cut Trilogy (which you own but haven't yet watched in their extended goodness), and your fifth is The Crow, which meant a lot to you while you grew up as a teen.  You also like the Hellraiser series because of Pinhead and the (just plain wicked) cenobites, but it's a distant sixth behind everything else.

Frankly I just don't feel the same way about those movies anymore but thanks for the trip down memory lane.

I actually caught this on ABC Family over the weekend, and Scott is right, it really is a great movie.  It had been awhile since I had seen it (it is one of those I'm always intending to pick up on DVD, but just haven't for some reason yet).  Although there are a ton of "modern" movies that I love (LOTR, Spidey, Harry Potter, the prequels, other superhero stuff, etc.), for some reason some of those 80s movies really seem to have that "magic".  It may just be the nostalgia of it - and probably is - but there is just something about the Star Wars Trilogy, Indy, E.T., Goonies....and even to a lesser extent stuff like the Karate Kid and Ghostbusters...that just make those movies hold a special place in my heart.  Scott covered it a lot in his original post, but a lot of these movies (like E.T. in this example) touch on a lot of what we remember from growing up....a simpler time I guess.

I just caught Karate Kid playing on Encore this weekend.  I was locked in for the whole movie.  The Nostaligia just takes over!
Title: Favorite Movies

Just thought I'd bump this one up again to see if anyone's picks or lists have changed.  Honestly, I don't know if much has changed for me, as I seem to keep coming back to the same movies or franchises.  My list doesn't get too varied I guess, and there are a lot of other movies I like, but I seem to keep coming back to the same list:

1. Star Wars OT (any really, although Empire is a personal favorite.  ANH is best "stand alone")
2. The Lord of the Rings (again, any, but I've always liked Fellowship a lot)
3. Indiana Jones (Raiders)
4. Spider-Man 2
5. Harry Potter (like them all, but have always really liked Prisoner of Azkaban)

I started rewatching the LOTR EE this week, just getting psyched for the Hobbit, and those movies are just so strong start to finish.  The Spidey movies are special to me just because the character was a big part of my childhood (and adulthood I guess) since I was 5.  I've enjoyed a lot of the comic movies lately (Cap, IM, Thor, Batman, X-Men, Scott Pilgrim, etc.), and really liked the Muppets last year as well.  Aside from that I usually end up back at the old classics like the Goonies, Ghostbusters, ET, Karate Kid, etc.  I could probably almost make a "classic" and "modern" list as well.
