Title: 2020 TVC Imperial Troop Transport
Post by: Jeff on February 6, 2020, 03:19 PM
In case you missed it, Hasbro released this thing as a Toy Fair teaser -

The paint job looks really sweet, although the functionality seems pretty light for $70 in comparison to the $20 Rebels one we got five years ago.

I hope this also means they're going to dig in deeper with figures from Mandalorian this summer as well.  Lots of great options from the show.

Saw a picture of this with a trooper next to it.  Sadly, it’s woefully underscaled.  Looks awesome though

The new Imperial Troop Transport looks really cool and is something I definitely plan to add to my collection  8)

However, I’m a tad confused.  I got an email on Tuesday from Entertainment Earth showing the vehicle as in stock and placed an order through the website.  The order has since had a status of “processing”.  The EE site now shows the vehicle as a preorder item, like Matt Fury just noted. Every other retailer, by contrast, seems to be showing the transport for a March release.

Did EE act too soon regarding the in-stock status of the item or was I too late and the initial batch sold out?  Did anyone else successfully order one of these from EE? While I was hoping to have the item in hand in short order, it is really no big deal and I can wait.  It just seemed a little odd for it to have been in stock only then to not be...

It’s really not as small as people make it out...  I’m a total scale snob but I’d put it at about the same as the TIE or the atst in terms of compromise.  A Stormtrooper standing is just under the roof of it.  A figure standing is a helmet above the roof...  that doesn’t seem that bad to me really, especially since I can imagine Hasbro didn’t have a lot of footage to go off of for it considering how tight things around the Mando were...  I think it’s pretty awesome.  I don’t plan on having soldiers in the outer pods though either.

I got an order in Tuesday when it said instock. Been "processing" since.

Edit-typed at same time as you tman. I'll be a little annoyed if they jumped the gun. Probably woulda done Amazon.

Yep, mine was charged as of February 5th.

I’ve never seen them charge without having something to ship but stranger things have happened.  I added some more so I got free shipping too.  That was nice..... if this pans out.

Did EE act too soon regarding the in-stock status of the item or was I too late and the initial batch sold out?

As you can see from Nick's shipping note above, there was a very small allotment in-stock so some orders will ship now but the bulk will wait until March.

The paint job looks really sweet, although the functionality seems pretty light for $70 in comparison to the $20 Rebels one we got five years ago.

I should have some press pics up tonight, but the interior is WAY more detailed than that Rebels version.

The Rebels one sat a pilot and a backwards facing dude and was basically hollowed out underneath to avoid making too many parts.  it’s just awful to me.  🤦‍♂️

I’m really enjoying the new one especially more pics I see of it now that it’s in-hand for someone on social media.  Get a better idea.  Part of the roof appears to be at almost helmet level so it’s not as short as some pics seemed even, but it’s literally maybe a Stormtrooper helmet short...  I can live with that.  Little miffed all the doors don’t open behind the “pods” but nothing too major to me.  I can’t wait to have a few and have them packed with stowage like they did with the Rebels ones.

I wanted to make a Rebels one to scale and wasn’t going to till I realized the Mando and Rebels ITTs aren’t really hat similar at all.  Same family but totally different.  Leaves a custom Rebels one on the table for me.

I just love how detailed the interior is (https://jedidefender.com/news/images/2020_02/TVC_ITT_loose_06.jpg) - gun rack, fold-down chairs for troops or leave the chairs folded up for cargo storage.  So much better than the hollow/plain interior on the Rebels version.

Same goes for the cockpit interior details (https://jedidefender.com/news/images/2020_02/TVC_ITT_loose_05.jpg).  Rivals the effort they put into the Rogue One tank for sure.

Exactly!  I’m stoked to have the ITT in armored columns wirh my tanks like little German halftracks following German armor.  To me it’s the best vehicle Hasbro could’ve done (for my tastes...  I know the razor crest would be small).

I know $70 ships suck but as someone who’s paying $50 for a little motorcycle thing got a toy line I like, this is pretty goddam nice.  This is the way....  for toys at least. Good toys.  This is what I wish they’d given us for the Rebels variant.  That thing bummed me out so bad, as did the ATDP.  This stuff is a breath of fresh air.  I’m fully expecting to buy quite a few of these over time and at least two full price. 🤷‍♂️ This is my jam.

The details on this vehicle look amazing!  And I have to give credit to Hasbro's design team for working hard to make a relatively big ticket item like this have those little things that keep even a seasoned collector surprised and impressed.

Truth be told, I always had pangs of regret about the vintage Kenner vehicle.  It was one of the things from the vintage line that I never was able to get.  But when I went over to my friend's house and got to check out his Imperial Transport?  I just loved it!  The Rebels incarnation of the Imperial Transport was interesting in terms of re-imagining that vehicle for animation.  But when I saw this version pull up in The Mandalorian?  That was impressive.

I will get AT LEAST one of these.  And I will absolutely pay full price.  Because I really feel like the collectors who hang out on the fringe and will only buy during sales or clearances may be hurting our chances of getting pieces like this in the line.  Now would I like a Razor Crest as a TVC offering?  Absolutely.  But I think it would be sized like the Republic Gunship.  Maybe that's something we can hope for when Disney and Hasbro come to terms for a license extension.

The vintage transport was always one of my favorite toys, and while the Rebels was one wasn't amazing, I enjoyed it and like I said, love this. I have to get one. Or two.

I stand corrected on the detail on this.  The original shots I saw didn't show the interior other than the pilot area.  After seeing more of the interior it definitely is a cool item and getting in the right value range for me, and I'd much rather have this than a redecoed X-wing for $100.

I just placed my order and can't wait to have this added to the collection next to the tank.

I’m stoked to have the ITT in armored columns wirh my tanks like little German halftracks following German armor.

Question - who's driving?

If Hasbro was smart, they would find a way to get the TVC Tank Driver and TVC Tank Commander back into the mix this summer.  I'd probably buy more of them to drive this thing too.

Check out this article from The Hollywood Reporter:  Classic 'Star Wars' Toy Returning to Stores After 40 Years (https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/star-wars-toy-returning-stores-40-years-1276131?fbclid=IwAR2OHwpS06hFrAHxXqznWoul4yHH5C64oPoF4YnTSQKVWMq0lHvDvER0C-0).  It includes an interview with Hasbro's Mark Boudreaux.

Mark is such a great dude and it's crazy to think of the impact he's had on this line over the years.  So easy to see the passion he puts into these toys.

Mark Boudreaux's lasting legacy in both the Kenner and Hasbro lines can't be overstated.  And I agree, he is a tremendous guy!  Every time I encountered him at Toy Fair or a convention he was always  approachable and eager to talk about Star Wars, the toy line (past and present) and was just very cool.  In the current job market people who stay with a company for more than 5 years are increasingly rare.  But Mark's tenure from Kenner to Hasbro is a truly remarkable.  And the line has benefited greatly from his contributions.

I think one of the most interesting things about this particular TVC vehicle is how it came to be in The Mandalorian.  The origins of it are actually pretty meta!  The article stated that the original Kenner ITT was one of Dave Filoni's favorite Star Wars vehicles from when he was a kid.  So the new TVC vehicle was based on it's appearance in the Mandalorian, and its appearance in the Mandalorian was inspired by the vintage toy.

In Rebels I thought those genetic quasi-atst drivers were driving those ones...  I would never turn up my nose at more tankers though.  For me I’ll likely be putting in atst type pilots in mine.  Symmetry of sorts. 🤷‍♂️

I am thinking of putting the assault tank driver figures in mine, but I’ve only got one loose at the moment, so I may just wind up using a couple spare AT-ST drivers I have...  Looking at the press pics, though, the interior reminds me in a way of the Hiya Aliens APC - or basically something that will be fun to stuff full of troops  8)

I have I think just enough tankers for tanks so I won’t be using them in there.  Actually I may be short because I got more tanks for Christmas.  I’d gladly buy more tankers and commanders given the chance.

Anyway my ITT is on it’s way.  I ordered late too, so I’d say if I got mine most should get theirs from EE if they got in before it went to preorder.

Considering how the tank noise dived in price is this worth pre ordering and paying full price or more? I'm feeling a little ripped off on how fast that tank and now the skiff went bargain bin.

My initial thoughts are always the same. However, I always buy one or two (of fleet building vehicles like this) at retail price, then wait to see what happens.

I'm buying right away... but mostly because I prefer to spend the extra money to be done with it immediately, and because I want Hasbro to continue to make new vehicles.

We're in the era of the Clearance Vultures - collectors who circle around, waiting for their prey (or collectibles) to drop before they swoop in.

I can appreciate people trying to stretch every dollar.  But this psychology is ultimately going to hurt the line.  If the big retailers can't sell a really cool item like the Imperial Troop Transport or the new Poe Dameron X-wing because collectors will only buy it on sale or on clearance?  Then the line is on its way out.

I bought my first Imperial Combat Assault Tank at full price.  I got another on sale.  And I was lucky enough to get another couple of them at 5 Below for $10 each.  And I think I'll approach the ITT the same way - first one at full price.  Because if we don't?  Hasbro isn't going to make these anymore.  And I will probably buy multiples of a vehicle on either sale or clearance.

And that's a great philosophy for this hobby.  Something like the tank or this troop transport are worth a retail buy for me because I love the detail and there are cool figures to crew it.

If this drops in price and is readily available, I might pick up another.

It seems vintage items have been built in enough quantity to be around long enough to acquire them, even if you don't preorder.  My guess is that if you don't pre-order you'll have enough time to track one down later, even if it doesn't go on sale.

I'm seeing some (mostly GameStop) 6" Black Series exclusives having very short pre-order time frames and then never really being available at retail.

What Rob said...

I got one immediately and I’m getting a 2nd full price.  From there I’ll buy as many as I can justify but also as price decline dictates.  As Pawlus always says, vote with your wallet blah blah blah.  Hasbro does not look at 3.75” as super important but they are still throwing cool stuff our way.  6” is more important to them clearly.  If people want 3.75” around they need to support it, or they will eventually can it.

GMNick, I’m totally gonna weigh the two damn things! 🤣

I still can’t get over that being a complaint about it but hey, it’s the times we live in as collectors I guess.

I’ll never tell people how to spend their $.  I didn’t buy the XWings because they’re not my bag.  But this is and I can get on board supporting it, for whatever good it does.  People on social media are acting like $70 is breaking their lives...  I assume they don’t own cars, houses, or have children, or ever get sick. 🤦‍♂️

I received my Imperial Troop Transport from Entertainment Earth this past Wednesday, but on account of being sick the past couple days, haven’t had a chance to open it until today...  Here’s a quick review and some photos  8)

Overall, the vehicle looks fantastic and has excellent paint applications, weathering, and detail.  It is somewhat on the smaller side, but still fits in scale-wise with other vehicles like the Assault Tank.

As has been noted previously, only the left and right forward troop doors open whereas the others are fixed. A top hatch opens and a figure can stand on one of the interior jump seats to look out.  The gun turret rotates & has elevating guns.

Even the transport’s underside is highly detailed with the repulsorlifts, etc.

The real neat part of the vehicle is the interior.  The vehicle roof pulls off and there is a lot to look at in there.  From the wiring, to the floor plating, to the gun rack, to the folding jump seats, to the fans detailed on the roof part, this is certainly one of the best detailed Star Wars vehicles out there.  There are 6 jump seats detailed, though only four fold down.  A figure can’t really stand up in the interior, but that is actually similar to the way a lot of actual armored personnel carriers are.  Plenty of room in the interior for additional cargo.  The rear hatch opens upwards and it’s a little awkward to place a figure running out the hatch...

The cockpit is also very well detailed.  Because of the way the doors open, it a little hard to see everything in there, however there are all sorts of wiring and switches detailed. The drivers have actual seats and the control columns are movable.  Even the inside of the doors are detailed with latches, etc. I’m using a couple AT-ST crew figures in my transport and they work well.

Overall, I’m really happy with the new Imperial Troop Transport vehicle and am glad I got one.  It is yet another fantastic addition to the Vintage Collection line and I hope Hasbro continues to release highly detailed and functional vehicles like this for the collectors market  ;D

The jump seats and rifle rack are great details for the interior.  The top hatch and rear hatch are cool, too.  And I like the way the exterior trooper positions connect with the troop bay.  And even though I never had the vintage vehicle, I would have appreciated the sound effects, too.

Oh, and the AT-ST crew make perfect pilots for this vehicle!  Good photos, too.

Thanks for the comments on the photos, everyone :D

I agree including sound effects would have been neat, but I’m perfectly OK without them...  Batteries can get old, explode, and ruin the electronics (a fact I sadly learned from my Clone Wars AT-AP).  It’s best not to have those features in my book.

Mine showed up today and it's a fantastic piece!  I love the homage to the vintage troop transport and the modern details!

Got my order today. Unfortunately neither arrived Mint-in-Box, so I have to deal with EE's Mint Condition Guarantee now.

I have been ordering from them since the late 90s, I like them and am happy to support them, but I am getting tired of complaining to them that their warehouse team is doing them no favors by taking a Hasbro shipping box, that clearly has damage, and then putting it into an EE shipping box without any padding on two or more sides around the Hasbro box (typically the top and bottom).

I cracked mine open just now.  It's a really well done vehicle.  I think it's more like a $50 item than a $70 item, but I'm just happy to have new 3.75" anything to open up.

Weird though that we have 2 Mandalorian vehicles, neither of which is the Razor Crest, and a grand total of 4 figures so far.

Man, I put my ITT through its paces back in the 70's, I was very eager to get this one. When it arrived last week, my 10-year old played with it for about an hour (which is unheard of for non-Lego toys around here!) He even went in his room and dug out a Stormtrooper figure he had stashed somewhere (who is now living in one of the side compartments for posterity.) I put it on display with some other "not in the movies" Imperial soldiers...

I am very pleased with it, but upon further inspection I think mine might be slightly defective...it appears to be missing a layer of the paint wash on the removable roof panel.  :'(

Great story Muftak!  That roof panel does look a little off.  Mine blends in so well, that I almost forgot that it was removable!

I think I'll wait for it to drop in price just like the tank did.
