I think Dustin should accept NAMBLA's endorsement of his candidacy.  If anyone can help him engineer a come-from-behind victory, they can.

From RS:

Quote from: Sidiously_Darth
So, how long does it take for Hyperspace to add a referral to a candidate's total? I just renewed my subscription 3 more times. I hope it works and helps put Dustin just that much closer to beating this phantom SW fan.

Good Luck Dustin!!!

I'm... speechless.  It's one thing to help out a guy by plugging his name in when you're renewing your membership, or even to buy a membership you hadn't intended to get, but this... ?  By what Sidiously Darth has said, he has apparently renewed his HS subscription at least 4 times at $40 a pop.  I don't know that I'd spend $160 to get my best friend or even my sister a free trip to San Diego, let alone some guy I at best hardly know.   :o

Uh-oh, I just heard some bad news.   :-\

Rumor has it that Dustin is about to announce that his candidacy is now being endorsed by: the letter E, the number 7, hydrogen, and the force of gravity.

He still can do it... I have faith.

All we have to do is get the backing of what's left of the Star Wars "community".

Well, there' still Yakface and GH, right?

Actually we've already thrown our support, and the considerable fandom influence that comes with it,  ::) behind Mike from the DC area Star Wars fan club.  I can't  blame you for not knowing that though since we've neglected to mention it in a new item on our front page every hour.

Up until now though, Dustin has probably gotten all of his referrals through the endless spamming.  I would imagine that in the final hours, Rebelscum will start registering accounts themselves to put him over the top.

It's what I would do if the race were that close and I were in Dustin's shoes.  Basically just spend the money you were going to spend to go to Comic Con anyway.

Then I'd give the accounts away.
That would be a crappy way to win, and I'm not even sure you could do it.  Wouldn't you have to have legitimate names, e-mail addresses and home addresses for each "member" who signed up?  It's not like one person or entity could donate $800 and then assign memeberships to people after the fact.  However, I wouldn't put it past RS to figure out a way to do this, even if it meant buying memberships or membership extensions for all the staff members at the last minute.

I'll just be glad when it's over.  Assuming Dustin loses that is.  If you think you're seeing spam now, just imagine how often we'd see/here about him being FC president if he wins.  That would probably be the proverbial straw that broke my back with regard to visiting RS.

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: Gas Prices
« on: April 17, 2006, 01:17 PM »
If we suddenly went 'cold turkey' on Gas powered Autos what would happen to all the American auto making companys? This world today seems to be about High priced gas sucking SUV's and many other types of autos that folks want to be 'different'..or because they're cool. I could totally see the automakers taking a huge blow initially if we suddenly had to convert to a boring same-as-everybody else alternate fuel vehicle-not to mention production would have to catch up to the demand for these vehicles if we quit..the oil. Sure they could catch up but I def. don't think it would be a smooth conversion.I wonder if that scenario would effect the US/world economy at all ::).  I believe there is technology today to have Gas vehicles that(even v8's) get a ton of MPG. They'll never be produced however, since it would hurt auto sales and Gas demands and oil company profits. Such is the world the way it is now..like Dressel says..and we just have to deal with it 'cause there's nothing we can do about it :(.
The American automobile industry is going to be in a world of hurt if they don't start producing more and better alternative fuel vehicles.  If we don't, someone else, i.e. the Japanese, will.  Just think how much better the auto industry would be doing today if Ford and/or GM had developed the first reliable, mass-market hybrid cars instead of letting Honda and Toyota do it.  Gas-electric hybrids don't make up the majority of American automobile purchases yet, but that segment of the industry is growing rapidly and right now foreign automakers are reaping the lion's share of the profits.

The market for hydrogen fuel cell cars would be a lot different though because even if US buyers want them (and I'm one who does), they won't sell well because there are only a handful of places in this country to purchase fuel.  Until we build a hydrogen fueling station infrastructure, no one is going to buy such cars.  The good thing about that is that it gives the US automakers time to develop really good designs for these vehicles and to bring them to market in such a way as to lock out foreign competition.  It probably won't happen though and people will be driving Honda & Toyota hydrogen cars long before Ford or Chevy decides they'd better start playing catch-up.

I don't know where it will be, but hopefully it'll be within convenient driving distance of central Pennsylvania.

One thing I'm will to bet on though is that it will take place after May 15, 2007.  If I recall correctly, to take advantage of whatever minor bonuses you got as a Fan Club member at C3, your membership  had to be valid during the convention.

Right now we're seeing a huge push for new members in the form of this FC President campaign, which ends on May 15th.  If C4 takes place say, May 17-20 next year, all the people who sign up now will have to renew their membership to get the FC bonuses.

Call me cynical, but it'd be a brilliant plan on their part to keep Hyperspace membership up through the beginning of 2008 when the real hype/buzz about the TV show will probably start.

I'm not so much for any candidate as I am against Dustin.  He's never personally done anything to me, nor has Philip for that matter, they just rub me the wrong way (so to speak).  They strike me as the kind of guys who are nominally nice to you when it suits their needs - to promote RS, or get "elected" POTOFC - but in reality couldn't care less about anything other than those goals.

Thank god for uscwannabe.  I don't know Jeff, but he seems like a good guy to me, as does the candidate GH recently choose to back, but I don't think either of them have much of a chance against the two front  runners.  I've been saying that the only thing that would get me to renew my HS membership is an announcement regarding C4, but I might also renew if it will help to keep Dustin from winning.  To that end, I can't really see me "voting" for Jeff or Mike, as happy as I'd be to see them win.  Although if one or both of them can close the gap, maybe.

Thanks everyone!

I don't really expect an announcement about C4 until the San Diego Comicon this summer.  Maybe they'll let the new FC President make the official announcement.

I've been registered here for nearly a year, but apparently never posted before today!  I'm the same mousedroid who's an Admin. over at GH and a nominally active member of RS.

So what prompted me to come out of the woodwork?  Well, the whole FC Presidential campaign thing started it.  We haven't really talked about it at GH and I wanted to see what the take on it was over hear.

Today I wandered into the Conventions forum and noticed the thread on the Pittsburgh Comicon, so I decided to post an update.  Lest anyone think my only reason for being here was to pimp my friends' convention, I thought I'd better post a formal "how ya doin'" thread.   ;)

Now that I've broken the ice I'll probably still only be a semi-regular here, but I'll definitely drop in from time to time.  After all, limiting yourself to one SW website is like limiting yourself to one TV channel.  Or one beer.   It can't be done! ;D

Bear in mind Jades, that the show isn't very Star Wars-centric.  At least not in my experience in the past.

That's true; Star Wars is typically a small, but integral, part of the show.  I'd love it if we could have half a dozen Star Wars stars every year, but we have to cater to many other interests as well.  And before anyone says it, the Dawn of the Dead people come on their own, we don't pay for them anymore.   :D

While we only have three guests this year, we do have a fair amount of Star Wars programming, thanks in large part to the Star Wars Association of Pittsburgh.  For those of you who haven't seen the schedule yet...
