Title: Ever see people at the movies who don't belong???
Post by: Scott on April 4, 2004, 12:24 AM
When we went to see Eternal Sunshine a few weeks back we walked into the theater and I was suprised to see seats full of blue haired old ladies for the most part.  I was sort of taken aback as I really didn't think this convoluted plot with fantasy overtones would appeal to the elderly.  Halfway through the flick I know two people behind us were sleeping because you could hear them snoring.  The best part was when we were leaving and my wife went to the restroom she heard two old ladies (one who probably had a touch of Alzheimers) say "Did you understand anything in that show???"

I also remember when we went to see Moulin Rouge and walking into the theater and seeing a similar demographic and can still remember to this day people getting up and leaving rather huffily in the first big musical number.  You had no clue this was going to be a musical?

Why don't people at least read up on what the movie is about before they plunk down the $$$ to get in there.  I sometimes feel like I should go over and tap them on the shoulder and say "Go ask for a refund"

When I went to see dawn of the dead - there were at least 3 kids with their parents who were between the ages of 4 and 6.  And this is a movie where they shoot an infant zombie in the head and shove an iron rod through a fat old lady's eyesocket.

I'm all about gore and violence and even for young people, but lets at least get into the teens before we go watching that type of movie...

I guess babysitters just cost too damn much money.

I went to see The Dreamers (Which was NC-17 had to fake my age  :-\) and I was surprised to see a bunch of old couples.  It was weird watching old married people sitting through the sex scenes all calm.

My friend is a manager at a nearby Indianapolis theater, and he says that, especially during day shows, they are always swamped by senior citizens, many of which go daily, even to watch the same movie.

When I went to see the Texas Chainsaw Massacre last year, there were some little kids there, none of them above six years old. Their parents were with them, too.

I know my parents never took me to a movie like that one at six.  ::)

When I went to see TPM, there was a group of fat women sitting in the row behind me. They laughed at almost everything and thought Jar Jar was the greatest thing since sliced bread. Funny thing was that they fell asleep during the podrace and began snoring. They slept until the very end and were trying to ask the people around them what had happened while they were asleep.

That was more of a story, so lets see...

I saw a few elderly people when I saw Jackass and Scary Movie 3. I also saw a few small kids when I saw Old School.  :-\

My neighbour is in her 80s and loves LOTR. She went to see ROTK and then borrowed my ROTK DVD. She told me it’s one of the most moving films she’s ever seen.

She also told me the disc went a little grainy on her widescreen TV. I told her that DVD-Rs only have half the capacity of commercial DVDs and that I had to basically squeeze 2 layers onto 1. She took this on board, told me the copy was still near-perfect, but she doesn’t want to keep it because she's waiting for the extended edition.

Ok, Im not racist, so lets not take it this way. I went to see hellboy, and the entire row behind me was black people. They TALKED through the whole movie. They didnt wisper. They TALKED. And after 4 or 5 times of asking them to be quiet (me and P'Dubbs) they didn't. Then they tried to start garbage after. They were like "I dont need yo' permission to speak. Dont hate tha playa, hate tha game!" ::)

Ive noticed more and more that when I am in front of black people, they talk through the movie, and share storys, and make snide comments. I dont know what the deal is. One such remark durring hellboy is "I hate comic book movies."-Well, gee, why the **** did ya bother coming?

Anyone else have that problem?

Kevin

Saw some Goth Types in the Jesus movie...talk about out of place...

Reminds me of one of the old Eddie Murphy standup routines...  Can't remember if it was his first or second one, but he had a lengthy skit on how black folks loved to talk during movies at the movie theater - both to the movie itself, and to eachother.  Pretty funny skit!   :P

To me it often seems like every single dumbass under the sun has to chat away during movies.  Drives me almost insane.   >:(

On topic, I've often seen young kids (between 1 and 7 years old) both at R-rated movies, and at very late movies that run well past midnight.  If they just sat still and didn't make any noise, then I could tolerate it, but when the parents let them cry and squirm for 2 straight hours, I also go borderline insane.   :-X

When I went to see Kill Bill the second time, I was the only one in the theater until the last minute, when a young gal walked in and decided to sit RIGHT NEXT TO ME (another pet peeve) and then proceeded to talk to the movie.  When Bill asks the Bride "Do you find me sadistic?" she answered loud and proud, "Yes I do!"

It was kind of funny after a while.

Wait, wait, wait-- a young girl sits next to you, and it bugs you? ;) ;D J/K man.

I went to see Hellboy tonight. I waited until the 7:05 show, because I loathe crowded theaters. There were only about twenty people in the place, but most of them managed to sit directly behind me, and kick my seat when they stretch. God, that bugs me.  >:(

I see people ever week that do not really belong:  my mom and my aunt.  They are both in their late 50's.  I take them to the movies once a week with me.  I have taken them to all kinds of sci-fi movies, horror, etc.  I know, that they are normally not their types of movies, but they usually enjoy them.  Tomorrow night, we are going to see Hellboy.  I am sure, they will have their own insight into the film which makes the night all the more interesting.

ROFL! I was watching 'This just in...' on SpikeTVTM and the black charachter was trying to order Hellboy tickets from Movie Phone, and it went somthing like this:"You are trying to order tickets for Hellboy! But, because your black, we all know you'll talk through the entire movie! So, you really want to see this zany family movie trip movie!"

I laughed for 15 minutes solid, no lie.

Just reading through some older threads here today, and found this one.  Although this is a couple years removed now, we had an experience of "people who don't belong" at the movies.  We went to see Clerks 2 at a matinee showing back when it was released, and saw two women - aged 70+ - walk into the theater.  We figured "they must be in the wrong theater", and guessed they would leave shortly after seeing the opening credits.  Well, they stayed about half way or 2/3 of the way through the movie before getting up, gesturing at the screen, and saying "eeeeh" and walking out.  It was pretty funny.  Probably about the last movie I'd expect to see two older women at.

Well to add another experience...

The second Weekend of "Saving Private Ryan" I saw a guy with his two young kids (had to have been 3 and 6 or so) at the time I wasn't a Dad yet and was shocked.  Heck, as many WWII Vets as we there, I felt like I did not belong.

When Sex & the City came out my Wife and I went to see it.  So I guess I was the one out of the place in that theater.  Though about half of the people there were well over 70, so I guess I wasn't the only one out of place...

Three experiences come to mind upon reading this thread.

The first had to do with South Park.  Two buddies and I went to go see that and were shocked at how many soccor moms had brought their 7-10 year olds.  It didn't take long into 'Uncle ******' for them to go sprinting out of the theater, children in tow.

The second was when my wife and I went to see Bad Santa the year it came out.  I was again shocked to see so many really young (3-7 year olds) children in the theater with their parents.  However, what was more shocking was that the families stayed to watch the entire movie.

Last one was just recently with The Dark Knight.  A family came in, two parents and three boys.  The boys couldn't have been any older than 3, 5, and 7.  After the movie was over, I was really taken aback that the parents brought those young kids to see that movie...

We have one particular theater around here that is notorious for bad audience experiences, and yet, my buddy and I will go on occasion just to see if the streak continues. There's always people bringing 5 year olds into R-rated movies, or talkative kids, who certainly don't belong, but the experience that will always keep us going back? The last time my buddy and I went, we sat in the back row and there's a walk space between the row and the back wall. A young couple came in at one point and had sex right behind us.

I understand Batman, especially if you don't know what you're getting into.  It's Batman, for crying out loud.  I originally bought tickets for my four year old and eight year old to attend (family day!!), but due to some scheduling issues, decided to have them go play with cousins and take my brothers instead, and the plan was just to take the kids another time.  Thank God my brothers went, because it ain't a movie for kids.  But when I bought the tickets, I had no idea....

I wouldn't have walked out with my kids, but I sure would have had some explaining to do...

(For the record, I am a horrible father and have subjected both of my kids to terrifying movies at home.  My son is certain he will die by having his brains eaten by zombies, thanks in no small part to me watching Dawn of the Dead (the new one) with him for Halloween a couple of weeks after his second birthday.)

The rating didn't give it away?

Nah.  **** that ratings ****.  Batman Begins was PG-13, and they've both seen that one a hundred times.

Basically any movie that my Brother takes his kids to.

Harry Poter - Order of the Phoenix
There's Something About Mary

He rents movies and lets them watch them (TSAM), or since I had seen OOTP and knew what it was like I advised him against taking his 7 year old and he did it anyways. His feeling is that they can handle anything regarding movies no matter the rating.

Since I work in the industry, I get to hear some first and second hand complaints about what people consider inappropriate material for their kids. A friend of mine who works for an executive at Disney told me recently about a phone call complaint she got (that she shouldn't have got since regular people shouldn't be routed to her line) from an irate mother about the content of a particular touchstone or mirimax movie, and you'll have to forgive me because I forgot the title, it may have been Wanted. This woman was irate, screaming at my friend. This woman had taken her 13 year old and 8 year old sons to this extremely violent movie, but it wasn't the guns, guts or swearing that was objectionable. It was the brief nudity toward the end of the movie.  ???

I hope that your friend told her that the movie was rated R, and that she was an idiot for expecting it to be ok for children.

Here's the info from IMDB's parent guide on Wanted:

Sex & Nudity
2 brief sex scenes (bare male buttocks seen).

Angelina Jolie is shown full nude from the back.

Violence & Gore
Gore and bloody deaths throughout.

Profanity
375 F words, and repeated uses of ****

Alcohol/Drugs/Smoking

Frightening/Intense Scenes
A scene involves human corpses hanging from a ceiling.
