Title: Star Wars Posters
Post by: Brian on August 9, 2004, 02:07 PM
I don't know how many of you buy/collect/display posters, but I really enjoy them.  My wife bought me the Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi movie posters, and framed them, for my birthday a couple of years ago.  I've always wanted to get the rest of the series, to have all six movie posters displayed.  For now, I just want to get the New Hope one next, and I have been trying to decide which version to pick up.  I was curious what some of your opinions are, between these two posters (courtesy AllPosters.com).  Also, feel free to post any posters you like, enjoy, collect, etc.  Really looking forward to that VOTC ANH poster that Hasbro put together as well, looked pretty neat.  Anyways, which of these do you prefer for A New Hope (or Star Wars, as we used to know it)?

I like both, but I decided to get the second one because I really don't like how buff Luke is in the first poster.

I'm in a similar predicament as you, except I'm looking for a ROTJ poster. I may use the one that Star Wars Insider mailed out - if the creases don't show up too bad... but I've got a feeling the creases are too deep in it to be able to frame it and be happy with it.  >:(

I've also got to get a signed SE:ROTJ print from Dorman to finish up that collection.

As far as movie posters go... right now I've got :

The 2nd ANH poster you pictured
A Limited Edition ESB poster (not sure what's so special about it)
A random Falcon/2ndDeathStar poster which I plan to replace w/ a ROTJ poster
And the TPM poster, which I plan to replace with a Ewoks : Caravan of Courage poster...

I have the Struzan SE posters to go with the Episode I and II ones, I like the idea of having the originals but I just wanted a common look between the six (hopefully Struzan does III too :-\)

I have a bunch of Hasbro ones too, hoping that they come out with an OTC version this fall

i'm a sucker for posters... i have quite a few (a few too many...) - you can see some of them in
this (http://www.jedidefender.com/yabbse/index.php?board=17;action=display;threadid=4751) thread i posted a few weeks back...

that said, i've always been a sucker for the style a poster. but i found one that i thought was way too cool to pass up:

for some reason, the fact that it is horizontal instead of the everyday vertical version just kinda made it stand out to me.

Wow, where is that from? Is it a US printed poster, or something like a UK quad one? Looks lovely.

The Style A one has always been the iconic poster. Love it.

Me, I have a ton of posters, all sitting in storage. Non are vintage, however, and are instead from the 97 SE's upwards. I have the SE teaser "3 reasons" and ANH posters framed, and ESB and ROTJ ones still in tubes. I also picked up a couple of really cool posters when the Art of Star Wars was showing at the Barbican in London a few years back. There's two versions, one with Darth Maul, back to the viewer, looking at a hanging framed concept painting of the character, against a white background. The other is C3P0 in a similar setting. They're really unique... couldn't find a pic of them online though.  :-\

I'm thinking that for my one-day-someday collection room, I'll need a double-sided vintage poster in mint condition, so I can display it in a light-up marque poster box. But that, it seems, will cost some serious cash.

On a bit of a tangent, I also ended up with both that TPM and AOTC vinyl banners that were offered by the Fan Club during the movie release years. Anyone else have those guys? They're ba bit big, but a pretty cool addition to the poster gallery.

The first poster for me seeing as i have that.
Added to the fact that it was the first poster that i had seen and i knew i was hooked, from that moment on.
I had a thing for starwars when empire first came out on video i had my dad hire it out for me each week.
So i managed to track down a set of those posters and they are waiting to be framed.

honestly, i don't remember.  ??? i picked it up a few years ago when i was on a poster buying rampage, and it ran about $12 so i'm guessing it's just some kind of reprint. but it's a 27" x 41", not the 24" x 36", and i thought it was awesome, so i had to get it.

I went on a SW poster buying rampage too, but it was back in the early 90's.  I pretty much went around and bought every differently styled poster that I could find, from all 3 movies.  I think I probably picked up around 15 of them at the time, including the two Brian's got above.  I just went with the cheapo repos, and not any of the huge, expensive theater type posters though.

Then, when the Special Editions hit, I picked up a few more, and finally, I think I only snagged one each from the two Prequel flicks, 'cause as you all know, those weren't exactly big hits with me.

Of course, as it stands, my entire poster collection hasn't seen the light of day in many years, as they continue living in a couple stupid poster containers for the time being...  Besides, how the hell do you display a good 30 or so posters, anyway?  Just rotate 'em?   :-\

I've tried to snag every figure poster (both vintage and modern) that's been made, but I think I'm missing a Saga one from a year or two ago, which may have been an Australian exclusive, that showed the first 52 or so Saga figures.  I picked up a similar one at C3 in Indy, but it only showed the first 40 Saga figures on it.

I have a bunch of Hasbro ones too, hoping that they come out with an OTC version this fall

You mean like this one, Scott?   ;)

I definitely want to get this one, but RS says it's an Australian exclusive too.   >:(  I'd actually prefer one that's got all the carded OTC figures on it though...

I only try to get the figure posters.  I love the movie posters, but as Matt said, where do you put them?  I only get one room for my stuff and shelving takes up most of the space.  That huge Vader standup from the SE's takes up a chunk of space as well.

Not sure what I'm missing, think I have most.  May have to try for the Australian posters too.

You should probably display the one you like. But I think the Jung one is considered the Star Wars one-sheet. It's always been synonymous with the movie for me. I like the second one too, but it's never fit as Star Wars' theatrical poster in my mind.

I also really love the swashbuckling "Style D" poster.

See in the 3rd poster, unbeknownst to most fans....Darth Vader was also a trend setter.  He was one of the first to really make the preppie "collar-up" a popular fashion statement...way ahead of the 80's fashion fads to follow.

Thus making the vintage Kenner figure quite accurate. :D

Thanks to Hemish, I'm now the proud owner of this beauty (as well as a couple other new posters):

 8)

Still perplexed as to why this is an Australian exclusive, and not available anywhere else...  It's a real nice poster - glossy, made of high quality sturdy stock, real sharp.  So now I'm almost all caught up on the figure posters again.  Still need a Saga one that showed something like the first 48 or 52 figures (different than the one with 40 figures), which may have been an oversees exclusive as well.

But for now, I'm happy (and VERY lucky) to have this OTC poster.  Hemish, you're the man.  Thank you.  I owe you big time, mate!

That is a cool poster Matt.  The "figure collection" posters are always kind of neat, and it doesn't get better than an OTC one.  Plus, since we know that the line "ends" at 38 (aside from the exclusive Emperor), you've got the whole collection displayed on one poster.  The figure posters always kind of remind me of the vintage cardbacks, just enjoyed seeing the whole collection together like that.  Of course, when I was a kid in the vintage days, you had to actually use the cardbacks to know what was out, or what was coming out :P

And what was even stranger was the fact that figure number 10 the Darth Vader isn't being released here due to safety reasons.
The original deathstar clash vader was recalled here and otc #10 was canned but for some reason they still printed it on the poster that was distributed here.
That poster should be available all over as HAsbro Australia only had 20 of them and the gang at www.mousedroid.com managed to get 4 for his competition.
So they should be available elswhere.
Oh and Matt check your pm ;)

No it's not a licensed poster-Yoda kinda has a drunk look on his face, he's sitting on a Bourbon St. street sign.  There's a pic somewhere on gus's site, I know there were only a few hundred prints made, and last time I saw it a long time ago on ebay I think it went into the thousands.  Kind of my weird holy grail over the last year or so. I have to investigate furthur, as I don't know the number run, and what to look for for fakes and all, for the $$$ for this I wouldn't want to get a cheap copy or anything.  Definately don;t want to spend that kind of $$$ on eaby, I'd like to try and get one from a reputable source.   This is gonna be a tough one.

I'm pleasantly surprised with its quality - the characters are embossed so they appear raised, which was a nice touch. Came in good shape, too. Back into its mailing tube it goes for years and years now.

Is anyone else buying this wretched turd of a poster out of obligation?

I hate the design, but I caved once I saw SWS.com was offering it as a double-sided version at 19.99, and I've bought all the PT posters prior to this. I'm a complete sucker. Shovel me ****, and I'll buy it, even if I don't like it.

I should be getting the Trilogy Banner on Wednesday and the Ep3 Teaser on Thursday, if the tracking numbers from SWS.com are correct.

Why don't you like the teaser poster? I thuoght it was pretty cool, so I ordered one. I wanted to order the foil posters as well, but it just doesn't seem like the right thing to do since they don't have the ANH one available. What would I do with just ESB and ROTJ? I wonder why they only had those 2. And I liked those posters, almost to the point where it was actually hard for me not to order just those two. I had to convince myself that it wouldn't be worth it unless they had the complete set.
Title: Re: Star Wars Posters

Well, I have most of the prequel posters as well, the cheap commercially available ones anyway.  But no, I did not order that thing.  Too forced, as someone else said (no pun intended).  I loved the fake poster with Anakin and the two clone/stormtroopers and the Vader reflection in the floor and would happily own it if I could find it.

That trilogy poster is really nice.  I cheaped out though and picked up the DVD promo poster for cheap :-\
Title: Re: Star Wars Posters
Post by: SilverZ on November 2, 2004, 08:34 PM
This is, of course, highly subjective, but I here's why I don't like it - Forced was the best description of the Ep3 teaser. It seems to be trying really, really hard to convey an idea that probably sounded better when it was pitched than it looks in its execution.

Aside from the problem I think it has from a layout/color standpoint, there's a distinct "Photoshoppy" feel to the other PT teasers that this one doesn't have. It has a very graphic feel, like something you'd see on a book cover. It just doesn't convey that movie feel all the others do. Its just sits there, uninspired.

Well, would you believe that tonight they suddenly found the ANH foil poster and put it up? So I run and add it to my cart, and then I figure that they will either be out of the ESB and/or the ROTJ and my chances at a set are ruined. But, what do you know... they were all listed as in stock.

ANH (http://shop.starwars.com/Product/ProductDetails.aspx?ProductID=512)

ESB (http://shop.starwars.com/Product/ProductDetails.aspx?ProductID=488)

ROTJ (http://shop.starwars.com/Product/ProductDetails.aspx?ProductID=489)

So of course, I just had to order all three. Now, the question is... how will they arrive? Flat? Or in good shape? I don't have high hopes for this, after reading about the fiasco with the Ep3 Teaser posters being shipped out now  :-\

Yeah, I've been meaning to share some of the poster joy that Hemish just hooked me up with (again).  Unfortunately, no visuals, since I'm still living in the 20th century and don't have a digital camera yet...   :-[

Anyway, for starters, Hemish hooked me up with the Australian exclusive Saga figure poster, which has 6 more figures on it (46) than the U.S. Saga poster does.  Plus, it's even laminated!   8)  So as far as I know, I now have ALL of the figure posters ever made - from Vintage to Modern, so that's definitely cool!

Then, I got 3 sweet "montage" posters from the AOTC DVD release, with Anakin, Yoda, and Jango as the primary characters in each one, respectively.

And finally, the mother of all posters...  Well, it's not really a poster, but more like a huge banner.  Vinyl, I think.  It's a cool Australian video store's promotional banner for the OT DVD release, with the silver and black logo of the main characters we've all seen for that promotion, and the store's EZ logo down near the bottom.  The thing is HUGE.  32" wide, by probably about 60" tall.  Just amazing!  Man, I wish I could show off some pictures of it, but I guess that's gonna have to wait just a little while.  Maybe I can dig up a similar pic on the Net somewhere...

Thanks again for the awesome stuff Hemish.  My poster collection kicks much more ass now thanks to your generous assistance.  You absolutely rock, bud!   8)

Here's a link to the autographed poster I take around with me.  Over 2 doz. original cast/crew (more now than when the pic was taken) I've since had Irvin Kirshner and a few others added.

Hope the link works:

It's a retail TXH poster mailed out to a handful of stores for the release of the Trilogy VHS in THX.

It's close to a standard 27" x 41" (don't recall exact measurements) in landscape on thicker paper.

Tydirium,

How big was this poster?

Anyone get a crack at the vinyl teaser poster at SWS.com? I guess they went up this morning (Wednesday) and I just only now found out. Now there's just "item not available." I'm extremely pissed, since I have the other two vinyls from TPM and AOTC.  >:(

EDIT: NM, they posted it again today. I can go on living.

Anybody know anything about a hologram version of the Wal*Mart exclusive posters that were given out for the release of the Trilogy DVD sets? A buddy of mine is telling me that there were some limited edition posters made up in that set that were holograms... I've never seen/heard of anything like this, but if they are out there, I need to have them!!

So I finally recieved the vinyl banner from SWS. It's actually a vertical layout, unlike the TPM and AOTC ones. It's basically an 8 foot high version of the teaser poster on vinyl.  :-\

I'm glad to have it simply to say I have a complete set of prequel banners, but yeash, I really don't like that artwork still.

And it appears there's a giant 15x10' roadblock up to my complete set of PT banners:

Quote
Own a piece of history! These are the actual huge, horizontal banners that were hung in a limited number of movie theaters across North America. Now they're available in very limited numbers exclusively at StarWarsShop.com. This is not a reprint, but the actual vinyl banner--15 feet wide by 10 feet high--that you saw hanging in a theater in your galaxy. There will be some wear or slight damage, so each banner is sold as is and on a non-returnable basis.

Be one of the very few to own the movie-going public's first general introduction to Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith. This theatrical teaser banner boldly conveys the main theme and spirit of the film: the transformation of the heroic young Jedi Anakin Skywalker into Darth Vader. The dark cloud of his future is represented by the flowing cloak with features of the Dark Lord he is to become. Those features are even more pronounced than the shadow that attached to Anakin as a young boy on the teaser poster for Star Wars Episode I. Get this one while you can! Limit of one per customer.
[/i]

I'm still not big on the poster design, but I'm such a completist I couldn't not order it. And after the last banner showed up as a vertical design, this one is closer to what I wanted in the first place.

I forgot to post and let everyone know that my poster arrived via FedEx yesterday.  Completely disproving my "FedEx doesn't give a ****" part of a post in another forum, the fine FedEx delivery person not only left me a note to let me know he had been there, but he also left the poster with my very kind next door neighbor.  So, even though neither of them will ever read these words, my hat goes off to each! :)

Anyway, the poster itself came rolled in a rather sturdy cardboard tube that had a huge "FRAGILE" sticker (I guess it was from France) attached, and the poster itself was in perfect condition.  I was a little scared about its condition, given that every story I've read about SWS and posters usually involved the words "ripped", "wrinkled", "crushed", or "aflame" in some capacity, but I was pleasantly surprised to see the same level of care in packing this poster as I saw with the Episode I teaser and theatrical posters back in the day when Dan Madsen's group was running the Fan Club.

I haven't hung it on the wall yet (due to the space on my wall, I may have to move it and the other two prequel posters to the rear wall as opposed to the front), but I have the frame.  I will be sure to let everyone know how everything looks all lined up when I can.

Now, to find the SE theatrical posters so I can have the complete set of six on the walls.... :)

Post by: Brian on March 28, 2005, 08:54 AM
I received my poster via SWShop on Saturday as well.  I was a little concerned that it might arrived beat up, but it was in great condition.  Like said above, it came in a quite sturdy cardboard tube with FRAGILE stamped on the side.  I also ordered the newer Clone Wars poster, which was along with it.  Both were in pretty good shape, the movie poster was perfect, the Clone Wars one had a little bit of ruffling on the edges, but nothing terrible and nothing that would make me send it back.

I'm running out of wall space for all the posters I like as well.  My wife bought me framed versions of the vintage OT posters, and I really enjoy those.  Part of me would like to get the Special Edition ones, just to have all the posters in "Struzan style".  My parents then gave me the "teaser" ROTS poster for an Easter present, so I have to find a spot for that one as well.  I really enjoy the various posters, its just tough to find the space for them all.

I have four of the Struzan posters framed in oak and hung in my office - still waiting on the AOTC and ROTS frames...I can post pics if anyone is interested!

BTW, is the coloring kind of dark on the displayable side of your ROTS posters?  The reversed side is printed perfectly while the flip side is really dark and just doesn't look right....??

I put mine in a frame so quick that I didn't really pay a lot of attention to the differences between the display and reverse sides other than, "hey, it's backwards!" :)

That said, the display side of the poster is actually a bit more vivid (color-wise) than the TPM and AOTC posters hanging alongside it.  I don't know how much of that has to do with the other two being hung on the wall for six and three years, respectively, but given that they were not in sunlight, that I don't smoke, or expose them to any other strange chemicals that might dull the color, I found the blatantly loud coloring of the ROTS poster to be quite a shock when they were "all lined up together."

And yes, I'd very much love to see a picture of all the posters you have framed thus far.  I was trying to explain to someone how, as cool as the prequel Struzans were, that the OT:SE posters had a more "unified" design that actually looked quite nice when side by side.  So, do post away ruiner!

Sorry for the delay - here's what I have done so far.

I just finished my basement (drywall and carpet, so you'll have to excuse the lack of base trim - it drives me nuts)!

My ANH poster is still in storage and AOTC and ROTS are being framed as we speak.  That explains why the TPM poster is next to the ESB one  :)

I'd like to display my loose figures next to each poster but I'm afraid that may not work as the posters need studs to properly hang....that leaves a lack of space for shelves...

Time to bump an old thread.

I'm currently revamping our basement, and my wife suggested we use our longest wall to display 6 posters - 1 for each movie.  I certainly wasn't going to argue with that!

I've got posters for Episodes 4, 5, 6:

(http://images.snapfish.com/343%3B5%3A4723232%7Ffp64%3Dot%3E2336%3D98%3B%3D8%3B7%3DXROQDF%3E23238%3A4655789ot1lsi)   (http://images.snapfish.com/343%3B5%3A4723232%7Ffp4%3Enu%3D3245%3E89%3A%3E7%3C6%3EWSNRCG%3D3232995567437nu0mrj)

I'm hoping to add the "official" versions of 1, 2, 3:

(http://images.snapfish.com/343%3B5%3A4723232%7Ffp46%3Dot%3E2336%3D98%3B%3D8%3B7%3DXROQDF%3E23238%3A4656744ot1lsi)   (http://images.snapfish.com/343%3B5%3A4723232%7Ffp64%3Dot%3E2336%3D98%3B%3D8%3B7%3DXROQDF%3E23238%3A4655788ot1lsi)

Any recommendations for where to acquire them?  The only place I've ever heard of is AllPosters.com, but they don't have the Episode I poster in the full size (27" x 40").  StarWarsShop.com has virtually nothing, and most of the other common Star Wars retailers don't even carry posters.

If anyone is considering buying any posters, head to AllPosters.com (http://www.allposters.com) and use the code JY52G
to save 20%.  But you gotta be quick, the offer expires at the end of today (July 5 @ 11:59 PST).

I ordered 5 posters from them - Episodes 2 to 6.  It turns out that the posters I had are really banged up and smaller than the standard 27"x40" size that I wanted.

Now I just have to track down an Episode I poster.  Who woulda thought that would be hard?   ::)

Yeah, it is.  Six pages at 48 per. ;)

Interesting to note that the 11x17 posters are more than the 27x40 versions.  They also have framed versions of the larger posters on the last page, but those are fairly steep.  Probably not after you add the framing costs if you do it yourself.  I wish there was a relatively inexpensive framing option to have nice frames.  $150 plus per poster is a bit too much for me.

They have some nice Indy posters as well. 8)

I wish I could remember where I saw them, but I'm sure that I've seen affordable poster frames before.  They're basically a plain black metal frame with a piece of glass to protect the poster.  Maybe Wal-Mart or some similar department store?
Title: Re: Star Wars Posters
Post by: Brian on July 5, 2005, 01:30 PM
Yeah, depending on what you are looking for, you can find different poster frames at Wal-Mart/Target.  Some quite cheap ($9.96), but they aren't exactly spectacular frames.  It depends what you want I guess. My wife first started my poster collection with the ESB and ROTJ posters, and picked up some frames at Target that I really like.  Bigger, box-ish frames that run around $30 each.  Kind of pricey for me, but I'll just be framing one poster from each movie in these.  Otherwise, as far as my Clone Wars/Special Edition/Other posters I lean towards the cheaper frames.  They still look pretty nice, and are much more cost effective for me personally.
Title: Re: Star Wars Posters
Post by: Morgbug on July 5, 2005, 02:06 PM
We've used the clear plastic sheet that has a backing board and small metal brackets for my daughters posters, but I prefer having a frame and matting for the real pictures (as though star wars is art ::)).  But once you add framing, the Code 3 posters actually end up being cheaper than a 27x40 poster framed and matted.

Since we'll be redoing a basement, a portion of which will be an entertainment room, possibly with a projector and screen setup, making it a movie-ish theme might be cool.  I was thinking of decorating with some movie posters - Indy, SW, possibly some classic Disney cartoon type stuff.  These would be a good fit, but I didn't want to spend a ton on frames.
Title: Re: Star Wars Posters
Post by: JesseVader08 on July 5, 2005, 02:39 PM
The framing shop that I've gone to told me that I can get a discount when I bring in 6 or more posters to frame at once, since that is the number of pieces of glass that come in a case.

Since I want the 6 SW posters framed, it should save me about 25%.  It's still going to cost me about $100 a piece though.   :-\

However, that's a hell of a lot better than it could be.  She's going to use vinyl frames to save money compared to wood.  Apparently vinyl costs about a 1/3 of wood but looks just like it - she showed them to me and they look great.   :)

I had initially planned to find the cheapest possible frame that I could find, but when she showed those frames to me, I was hooked.  The nice frame really adds a lot of punch to the poster, without costing $300 a piece.

Amazing how the frame is still 2 to 5 times the price of the poster.   ::)

Can someone point me in a direction to find out how to tell if vintage theater posters are real or fake?  I've a line on some that might be the real deal including a rolled Star Wars poster.  I know the folded is more common and I've seen recently ended auctions for the rolled version but I need to know how to tell whether it's the real deal or not.

The sale also includes two folded ROTJ posters and an Empire poster from the 1997 re-release.

It's a very good deal if they are real (I believe the Jedi to be real).  The Empire poster isn't such a big deal and the guy's been quite honest about it too.

Answered my own question (http://www.cinemasterpieces.com/cinestarwars.htm).  Looking for a hair on the belt.

I can categorically state that you people are no fun whatsoever for not taking any interest in my new acquisition.  Mr. Fury is excluded, of course.

So over on snowtroopers.ca a guy pointed me towards an auction on a local Winnipeg sales board.  Kind of a mini-ebay of sorts, but not auctions, just listings with prices.  I contacted the guy and he told me he had several posters.  These included an original Star Wars one sheet style A; original Return of the Jedi one sheet style A; original Return of the Jedi one sheet style B and an Empire Strikes Back re-release poster from just prior to the release of Jedi.  He also indicated that the Star Wars poster was a rolled version.  If you read through the link I provided you'd know that's pretty darn rare so I just about wet myself at the prospect.  We talked for a while, but I wasn't too keen on picking them up, given his asking price (which was fair, btw).

I didn't know much either, so I dug out the resource I linked above (http://www.cinemasterpieces.com/cinestarwars.htm) and read about as much as I could.  He emailed me back on Monday with a lower asking price and I met up with him yesterday to take a look at them.  Here's what he had:

Star Wars Style A One Sheet
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v643/Morgbug/P1070951.jpg)

You can see pretty easily it wasn't in fact rolled (although he had rolled it) but rather was a folded version.  While a little disappointing because it wasn't uber rare, it was a little reassuring because the rolled versions seem to be faked a whole lot more.  I took a good close look at it and even measured it with a $1.50 tape measure I picked up at the dollar store prior to meeting up with the dude.  Sure enough the dimensions were spot on 27x41 (and 1/8 ;)).

Even though it wasn't rolled, I checked for Luke's "hairy belt" and nope, not there:

Good, next point - Copyright is supposed to be offset/indented by 1/8":

Groovy, check.  Took a look at the lower right to see which version we're looking at and it appears to be Version 3 from the website with only 77/21 across the bottom right, no 'Star Wars' below it.

You can see a little tear and this poster and the others have some tears along the folds, hardly a surprise unfortunately.  So pretty cool by my estimation and I'd suggest I now own an original release Style A Star Wars One Sheet 8)

I also picked up the following posters from him, all folded and all seemingly the real deal, though I can't be completely positive on these.  The information on what to look for in the ROTJ posters isn't as abundant and I haven't found anything really telltale at this point.  I am a little concerned about the Style B poster as the markings on the lower right don't seem identical, so maybe it's a later version or re-release ???  The other version (Style A) seems a good match, and I actually prefer that poster anyway, so I'm happy and feel comfortable saying it's legit.  :

Return of the Jedi Style A One Sheet:

Return of the Jedi Style B One Sheet:

Both are in pretty good shape, but some minor tears and some pinholes as well.

The last poster I picked up was an Empire poster from the re-release in the summer of 1981:

There's no record at all of this poster on the site I linked, so I've got no clue at all what the deal is with it.  The guy stated he didn't think it was worth much and he was more or less throwing it in with the others so all three movies would be represented.  If anyone knows anything about that poster, please let me know as I'm quite curious.

I suppose now I'm in the market for a legitimate Empire One Sheet.  I'd much prefer the advance version with the Vader head on starry background but could live with the "gone with the wind" version as well.  I'd like to get these linen backed, but I'm not about to send them south because of the customs fees I'd have to pay coming back to Canada ::) so I'll try and find a place locally.  I'll probably go with the place we get our "real" artwork from, rather than the local U-Frame It place.  I'm thinking it would be cool to display one of each framed and have the Code 3 3-D versions above them.

Nice score Brent!  How many do you have now?
Title: Re: Star Wars Posters
Post by: Morgbug on February 6, 2007, 01:35 AM
That makes six, which was my original goal after I obtained the first four (SW style A; ESB re-release; Jedi A&B).  It was because I had the two Jedi posters and only a re-release ESB poster that I decided to up it to six.

I wanted to get an original ESB poster and the Advance One Sheet was my real goal.  I paid as much ($100) for the Advance as I did for the first four posters, but I still think $100 is a bargain.  They've been relatively cheap lately, ranging between $100 and $350 when I'd think they would go for more.  I've bid and lost on both Style A and B for ESB, including a bid of $135 on a Style A poster.  So I'm pretty pleased to get the Advance for less than that bid.

The other Star Wars poster I got was just a simple re-release, but I like that one because I remember it from the theaters and because it has the Revenge of the Jedi banner (snipe) across the bottom right corner.  It only cost around $30 or so, I don't really recall but it wasn't much and is authentic.

These are intended to be framed and linen backed, if needed.  They'll go into the basement in the "theater" area where I hope to have a projector and  make it a movie viewing space.  I also have the Code 3 sculpted posters to go with these, but as it stands I only have the Revenge, Star Wars and ESB Advance posters from Code 3.  I'm still missing the ROTJ that I want to get.  I've lost a few auctions on that one too, but only because I'm cheap.  They retailed at $70+ and I'm trying to get them for under $30 shipped.

Cool.  They will definitely look well displayed.  I had my ROTJ poster dry mounted and it got out most of the creases from when it had been folded and placed in a film canister with the movie.  It looks great on the wall.

Forgive my newbie-poster-collector question, but why linen backed?  Does that protect the poster?
Title: Re: Star Wars Posters
Post by: Morgbug on February 7, 2007, 12:42 AM
Not really, it more helps restore them than anything else.  It also devalues them to a degree.  A vintage poster that is not linen backed will hold its value better, in other words.  But when they tend to get beat up or the creases are heavy (rips, pin holes, etc.) putting a linen backing on them tends to both hide the flaws better plus it also adds some strength to the poster.

My two re-release posters and the ESB advance probably don't need the linen backing (though I need to see the last in hand to make that call) but the two ROTJ and the SW style A do need it as the creasing is really heavy and they have rips and pin holes.  In other words they're beat up.
Title: Re: Star Wars Posters
Post by: JesseVader08 on February 7, 2007, 12:57 AM
Oh, I see, so the linen is actually physically attached to the back of the poster?  I've got a few older posters (nothing of any value) that I had pinned up as a kid that hold a lot of sentimental value and could use the support the linen provides.  I didn't even know a framing shop did that, so I'm glad I asked.
Title: Re: Star Wars Posters
Post by: Morgbug on February 7, 2007, 10:08 AM
Not sure if you're average framing shop is going to do it.  I think it's more of a "high end art shop" kind of thing and probably not inexpensive.  It's sort of hard to tell but from what I've read, it can be done well or it can be done poorly too.  It's hard to tell because you can't tell if someone is just promoting themselves by saying other places may do a poor job of the work.

We do have a place we buy "real" artwork from and the framing isn't cheap there (but then it's usually not just a metal frame with glass and a backing board).  I'm not looking to matte these or anything like that, the metal frame and glass in this case is probably the best for protection but the linen backing I'll get done if it will improve the looks of the displayed poster.  We'll see.  We'll see what the cost is too :-X

Not sure if anyone can help me with this but -- I'm trying to find a way to frame a picture of the twin suns of Tatooine -- not Luke looking out at them, just the one shot in Episode 4 of the actual twin sunset.  Anyone know how I could get an image in a high-enough resolution so I can blow it up to poster size for framing?

Thanks in advance!

Official announcement on OfficialPix.com:

"New Indiana Jones IV Photos At Blockbuster

Our good friends at Blockbuster have secured four new EXCLUSIVE Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull images from Official pix. These very cool IJ4 images have been packaged in a special debossed IJ logo 11x14 inch mat and will be available in some 4500 stores nationwide in limited quantities. If you are a IJ collector, don't miss them when they hit the shelves May 1st!"

$12.99 each for a total of $55.59. I'm a little disappointed that these aren't brand new images that haven't been released yet. I think the only one I hadn't already seen is the one where they are running away from the steps. Cool idea though, I'm glad I was able to get these a day early.

I've had good luck with AllPosters as well, plus they always seem to have some sort of sale/discount code going on.  I think I've gotten all the OT posters there, as well as Raiders, FOTR, and Spider-Man without a problem.  Actually just ordered a Muppets poster for our daughter this week.

Anyone know "the right way" to display and store posters?  I've got a pile of SW posters that I've acquired over the past 20 years that are mostly still in the original shipping tubes.

I was looking at framing my favorites.  It looks like people are going either with $100 custom frames or cheaper Target-ish versions.

I've also heard you should store posters flat and not rolled?  Any thoughts?

I was looking at buying some archival quality mylar sleeves and flattening all of my posters.  However the mylar sleeves look fairly expensive.  The cheapest I found was $7.5 per poster sized sleeve.  I've got about 50 posters and that adds up.  I was also looking at acetate which is cheaper, but I'm not sure what is recommended.

Thoughts on display and storage?

I had my movie posters framed in a frame shop and they look great.  It was especially true with my ROTJ poster because I aquired that one from a movie theater and back then they would fold the posters up into the film cannisters.  I had that poster dry-mounted to help hide the creases.

Duplicate posters that I own are still in their packing tubes...as far as I know they should be fine in there.

* Exception being Hal Wamsley/Jawa, which there seems to be the onging he's a fake, no he's not, yes he is argument, which even if it turns out he is...still seems to have found his way into SW lore.

Got the Force Awakens teaser poster via that Disney Movie Rewards program last week.  To be honest, I hadn't ever done anything with those "points" until hearing about the poster offer, and they are actually pretty cool.  Between the Marvel, Pixar, and various Disney movies we had picked up anyways, we had plenty of points to get both this poster and the Ant Man movie poster as well - shipped to our house for free.  I'm looking forward more to the first "art" poster that we'll see, but this was still pretty cool.

Count me among the disappointed that there's no way (at least yet) to purchase a theatrical poster.  I was able to get 27x40 theatrical one-sheets (double-sided, no less) for all three prequels (as well as teaser posters), plus The Clone Wars theatrical film, from StarWarsShop.com back in the day with zero hassle and no hoops to jump through.  I was really looking forward to framing the TFA poster alongside the first six films, but it looks like Disney has to treat this as a "high end collectible" that only certain people are entitled to.   ::)

Title: Re: Star Wars Posters
Post by: Dave on April 15, 2016, 02:29 PM
Par for the course.  My stupid and tragic tale of trying to acquire a TFA movie poster.  Kids, let Grandpa Dave spin a yarn.

**********

Back in 1998-2005 (the old days) - in the days of LucasFilm and ShopStarWars.com, a new Star Wars movie would be in the works.  Excitement would build.  Articles would be written.  Fanboys would speculate and salivate.  A trailer would be shown in the theaters accompanied by the release of a "teaser movie poster".  Interested consumers would go to ShopStarWars.com and buy the teaser poster for $20 plus shipping.  The transaction would take a few minutes and a week later a poster would arrive at your door.  The same would be true of the theatrical release and the theatrical poster.  Five minutes of online shopping, $20, and one week later UPS would leave it at your door while you tended to other things.

Spring forward to 2015 and the days of Disney running the commercial operation.  New movies would be in the works.  Fanboys would salivate.  Yet there would be no way to purchase either a teaser poster nor a theatrical poster other than cheap downsized reprints.

A few fast acting people would be able to acquire these posters, but only through Disney's movie rewards program.  Quantities were very limited, so you better act fast.

"What is Disney Movie Rewards", you might ask?  Its a loyalty program for people that buy Disney DVDs.  You might also ask, "Why is that the only sales channel available to get a movie poster.  Shouldn't these be available at Disney parks, or Disney stores in the mall, or maybe even Disney.com?"  "Why should I have to buy ten copies of Air Bud to get a Star Wars movie poster"?  All good questions.  Perhaps the Hasbro team responsible for choosing figures to make that never appear in the movie might have lent some help in making these genius decisions.

So kids, Grandpa Dave has spent probably upwards of 80 hours trying to get the theatrical release of this movie poster.  His old bones weren't quick enough in getting ten copies of Air Bud before all the posters were gone (seriously, anybody need a few copies of Air Bud?).  He spent hours driving across town twice on movie premier day because a local theater was supposed to be selling posters that turned out to be small one sided copies for $25.  He as Googled, and searched online, and logged in DisneyMovieRewards.com daily for four months trying to get a poster.  He has made countless bids on eBay only to lose out to people willing to drop upwards of $100 to acquire these posters.  No luck.

Well, after all this he finally managed to "win" an auction on eBay for the theatrical poster (he is still looking for a teaser poster) for $100 on Tuesday.  Thanks to USPS the poster tube arrived with a giant spot caved in.  Thank you for a $100 creased poster.  :'(

If you're doing the math.  Old days - 5 minutes and $20.  These days - 80 hours and $150 ($100 for the poster and $50 for ten copies of Air Bud).

And then today, Friday, out of force of habit Grandpa Dave checked DisneyMovieRewards.com, and for the price of ten Air Bud movies I can now get a The Force Awakens movie poster.

To Bob Iger, and the leadership at Disney - may a real (not animated mouse) crap in your bowl of Cheerios tomorrow morning.

*************
I know its way too long, but I just had to vent.  ::)

I finally managed to collect enough points before they expire to get a TLJ movie poster.  I didn't have 1,000 points for a Force Awakens Poster.

It still surprises me how hard it is to come by theatrical posters compared to how easy it used to be.

I'm still scouring Amazon and other places for $5 DVDs that can I buy and redeem for posters.  Stupid process that ends up costing around $50 a poster and 90% of the DVDs go straight to Goodwill.

With the release of And Man & The Wasp today on Blu Ray, I was finally able to redeem enough points to get the TFA theatrical poster.  Now I will have all the Saga posters.  :D

Received my TFA movie poster from Disney yesterday.  Now I have to get both of them framed and on the wall and I have all the "Saga" movie posters!   ;D

Quick question:  For the anthology movies, which posters are considered the official movie posters?  The ones that only have the title in the Star Wars font?

Both versions are "official".

Most movies have what is called a "teaser" poster that comes out when the trailers start to come out about 4-6 months ahead of the release.  The anthology and Sequel Trilogy have used a generic Star Wars font with the movie title for the teaser posters.  The prequel trilogy had some cool artwork on theirs, but they didn't carry this thinking forward for the ST.

When the movie is released there is another poster that is just called the "theatrical release" poster.  This is the classic one with the characters, art, etc.

Guess I'll have to look for this version.  :D

For TFA this was the teaser poster - (https://img.moviepostershop.com/star-wars-episode-vii---the-force-awakens-movie-poster-2015-1010772419.jpg)

And this was the theatrical release poster- (http://www.moviepostersusa.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/600x600/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/p/5/p5000_5.jpg)

Plus there are usually other "promotional" posters that can have other imagery, but these are not considered "official movie posters".  I think TFA had a handful of these like the following - (https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/XJkAAOSwx-9W1W4O/s-l300.jpg)

Thanks Dave.  I generally stay away from the teaser posters and other promotional posters and display the theatrical posters:

I honestly don't remember anything in the theater for Solo except for the Teaser poster.  I think I found the Theatrical poster for Rogue One, but I would have to go through someone other than Disney to get it because I did not see it in the redeem section when I was looking.

The Solo movie poster was fine, but nothing special.

DisneyMovieRewards.com is having a big sale through Sept 9th.  About 70% off on a lot of stuff including posters.

I pulled the trigger on some Solo teaser posters that I'd been watching but never got.

Disney Movie Rewards has been going through a redesign for months and months and no longer has real product on their site.  That is where I had been getting my double sided movie posters.

Anybody got any other sources where you can get legit posters?  I'm looking to get the new TROS movie poster.

I'm just going to be patient and see if Disney gets it.  I have the points ready to go.

Anybody manage to track down a TROS movie poster yet?  I'm not sure Disney Movie Rewards is ever going to have these.

I have. I'm very lucky to have a wife's relative working at a small town movie theater and that he likes me.  He knows whenever a Star Wars movie hits that I'll buy a teaser and final movie poster when they become available. The posters I get usually haven't been displayed at his theater.

After picking up my TROS and Rogue One movie posters from the frame shop yesterday, I am calling this part of my collection complete!  Now I have to do a complete redesign of two of my walls to display them all!

I'd love to see photos.

I'm about to finish my basement and am thinking of having several backlit frames to show off the double sided movie posters.

I've got piles and piles of Star Wars (and a few Indy) posters, so I'm thinking of having frames that can allow for easy swapping in and out of posters so I can rotate them through from time to time.

For me my toy room is hidden in a back room.  My boss has allowed me to display a few posters in the main common basement area.  All the rest needs to stay hidden lest the neighbors realize what a crackpot I am.  ::)

Since I can't find a good way to host photos on these forums, I'm working on a youtube video of my office/Star Wars Toy and Prop Museum.  You'll see how I set it up then.  :D

The Disney Movie Insider rewards program has finally restocked their physical goodies after 1.5 years of not having any.  I picked up the Rise of Skywalker teaser #2 and theatrical release posters.

There are currently quite a few different Star Wars and Marvel posters available.

Kenobi teaser poster is available this week on Disney Movie Rewards (https://www.disneymovieinsiders.com/reward/575651).

I'm not overly impressed with the teaser poster, but at 400 points I bit and will add it to my poster collection.

I'm not sure exactly why they're creating posters for streaming content, but they released a new Kenobi "payoff" poster on Disney Movie Rewards (https://www.disneymovieinsiders.com/reward/575878).  I grabbed it as I've got nearly all of the posters they've released over the years, but this one is likely to just get filed.

I think The Mandalorian posters have been pretty good, but the Kenobi ones, the Boba Fett ones, and other recent ones have been a little boring in my opinion.

You're not talking to yourself Dave, I've just been quietly listening.

After getting all the Theatrical Posters (minus Solo...it looks nice, but they style is just so different from the others) I consider my collection complete in this area.  I just got them all up in my new office and they look awesome!

The posters have been fantastic.  I just struggle with where to put ANY of them.  I have so many old posters that I don't have any wall space for - including some of those convention exclusive Legacy Collection figure posters!

Yeah, the Disney streaming posters have mostly been meh, but I'm sure they're not putting a ton of effort in to them either.  For the most part I still get them all and like them, although I don't like that they put dates on them.

They're more or less free, or close to free from Disney.  If you link your Disney+ subscription, and scrape up all their free points throughout the year from other promos you get close to 1000 points, which will get you about 2.5 posters a year if you can get them on Wednesday Wins discounts of 400 points each.

If you ever need more points you can buy codes from DVDs on eBay for cheap too.

Definitely not talking to yourself, lurking about here as well. I used to try to keep complete on all the “main” posters, but as I ran out of room to display them (and I know I’m not going to rotate my OT posters out), I kind of let them fall by the wayside. That said, I had been wanting to get a Mando poster and saw this one was going up this week, so logged in to find I had enough points to snag it so I did. Looking forward to putting a new Star Wars poster up on the wall.
