Discover the Force / Movie Heroes / Re: Movie Heroes Battle Packs
« on: April 20, 2012, 07:45 PM »
I still say that these figures were originally intended for stores like "Five Below" - minimal packaging, minimal articulation, minimal paint applications, modest sculpting - and when DePriest was fired/removed from the Star Wars brand, they scrapped plans for a cheaper line and were left holding the bag on a dozen or less, of these Dollar Store level figures.

You're on the right track, but not completely.  Hasbro has been developing figure lines and offerings for international markets where the US price points would make them cost prohibitive.  And it's been across several different licenses.  The Marvel team showed off some of these emerging market type offerings a couple of years ago at Toy Fair.  However, a good deal of that product was not intended for US markets.

A figure with only 5 points of articulation is most likely going to be cheaper than the existing Vintage Collection sculpts.  These battle pack figure offerings will have perhaps 7 or 8 parts each.  Vintage Collecting figures like the Bespin Luke or TVC Boba Fett have a great deal more parts, more complex joints, more intricate paint apps and are as a result more labor intensive.  That translates to higher costs and a more expensive figures.

Watto's Junk Yard / Re: Bar's open! What'll you have...?

True dat.  I couldn't bring myself to spend over $100 for a single bottle of liquor right now.  However, Makers 46 from the distillers of Makers Mark have comeup with one of the finest bourbons I've ever had the pleasure to enjoy!

What I took from this story was that Cersei killed her son in the same way she killed John Arryn.

Correct on the first part, but not on the second.  I won't say any more than that because the books and eventually the series will reveal that. That being said, it seems clear that John Arryn had been on the verge of informing King Robert of the true parentage of  Joffrey, Myrcella and Tommen.

The Vintage Collection / Re: The Future of Star Wars Collecting?
« on: April 19, 2012, 11:15 AM »
Believe it or not, Hasbro HAS been reading forums for years.  In my own interactions with some of the people in the Hasbro-Star Wars team I've heard them reference things that only someone who has been checking out forums would know about:  Stan, the ICMG petition, wishlist polls and more.  They're checking things out but maintaining a low profile.  In other words, they're lurking.  Hell, at the NJ Star Wars forum I admin I saw that a Hasbro person had been checking out our site based on the IP address info.  And that was just a few weeks ago.

Direct interaction with forums can only end up badly for Hasbro.  Some people will be cool and levelheaded about things, but some people are more likely to get belligerent.  Once that happens the situation can quickly spiral out of control.  The Q&A process was a somewhat reasonable middle ground where fan sites could offer up questions from their readers, but the fan sites were acting as a filter to keep some of the craziness in check.

Social media research could certainly help Hasbro.  Polling like that can give you some real answers, and there are filtering mechanisms built into some surveys that will weed out some craziness.  Some of the action features have no doubt been meant for kids.  That's just a fact of life.  Collectors are still the minority interest in the overall marketplace for Star Wars figures.  At this point in time the market may be about 75% kids / 25% collectors.  But in movie years that ratio has been skewed far more towards the kids than the collectors.  The one ratio I've heard thrown around has been about 90% kids / 10% collectors.

However I don't see Hasbro involving collectors in the development process.  And that's because of the multiple layers of product approval:  product safety testing and of course there's approval by Lucas Licensing.  Hasbro's stance has been that if they show off a product to the public, eventually they intend to release it.  But what happens if they share a new product development only to have it fail safety testing or Lucas Licensing says no?  Then Hasbro is left holding the bag, and has to explain to collectors that FIGURE X is not coming despite their involvement in the process.

As for the future of Star Wars collecting?  I think it's going to hinge on a few things:
-How long will the Clone Wars animated series successfully carry on?
-Will the STAR WARS - UNDERWORLD live action series actually happen?
-Will the Hasbro line remain profitable for Hasbro?
-What's going to happen with the master toy license in 2018?
-Will the economy improve soon?

All of these things are linked together.  Still, Star Wars has been one of the best selling boys toys brands for a LONG TIME.  So it's got that legacy effect going for it at retail.  Lots of movie licenses come and go, but Star Wars remains.  And that's because it's shown that it has legs.  Very few other licenses have that kind of longevity.  That potential for long term profitability for both Hasbro and Lucasfilm is important.  But, will the Hasbro Star Wars line rebound with the economy?  If it does, I think we can expect the line to continue on through 2018 and possibly beyond.

the new R2 is pretty cool cuz it does do a crazy amount of noises.  That said, I don't think I am interested in buying yet another R2

Yeah, but the fact that Hasbro hasn't been able to properly do the lights on R2's dome has been a dealbreaker for me with any electronic R2-D2.  With LED's being so cheap and easy to use, you would think that Hasbro could figure this out.

The season is definitely shaping up.  The show creators have added some things that seemed to go unmentioned in the novels:  Stannis & Melisandre in episode 2, and now Renly & Loras in episode 3.

Also, is it me or was Ser Gregor supposed to be a part of the events at the keep with Yoren and Arya?

Star Wars Universe / Re: Darth Malgus - an Old Republic Vader?
« on: April 14, 2012, 09:04 AM »
There's definitely been a move towards keeping the feel of the game familiar to OT and PT fans.  Jesse mentioned the Republic Troops.  The armor is definitely reminiscent of the Saga, and even the faces of the troopers themselves look similar to the Prequel Clones.  And in an attempt to appeal to some SW gaming fans I've seen plenty of Sith in the trailers who are wearing masks that would remind you of Darth Revan.

Yeah I want to order a case but I'm so wishy washy on this wave and that assortment, I just can't pull the trigger (yet).

If you want to order though, Ordering Now Would Be A Good Idea!

Not a completely terrible assortment.  I could find uses for the extra 4 figures in that case.

He certainly looks that way.  This is the Darth Malgus maquette that was standing at the LucasArts booth at NYCC:

In the SWTOR cinematic trailers you see some of the backstory in Malgus's injuries.  In the "HOPE" trailer he sustained the injuries that led to the breath mask.  From looking at the maquette, it seems like everything else is armor.

Finally...Avengers Aliens revealed (spoilers obviously)

IIRC, that ties in with some of the plot line we saw in the Ultimate Avengers animated feature.
