Interesting trailer on Airbender, but I thought that James Cameron had that project.

The Cameron Avatar is a different movie altogether.

I didn't want to start a new thread for this, but with "summer movie season" right around the corner now I was wondering if anyone had any predictions for the #1 movie for 2009?  It seems that it most often comes during the May-July/Aug months (with a few exceptions), so with Wolverine kicking things off in less than 2 weeks now - which movie do you think will be the big winner for the year?  For reference, here's the box office champs of the last five years:

2008 - The Dark Knight
2007 - Spider-Man 3
2006 - Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
2005 - Star Wars Episode III: The Revenge of the Sith
2004 - Shrek 2

It seems that most of those movies were pretty big favorites going into the summer, while it might not be quite as clear this year.  Some possible contenders (and some that are tough to judge):

X-Men Origins: Wolverine
Star Trek
Terminator: Salvation
Angels and Demons
Land of the Lost
Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen
Up
Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs
Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince
G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra

Later in the year...

Twilight: New Moon
Avatar

The top ten of the year (so far), according to Box Office Mojo:

1   Star Trek   Par.   $240,823,706
2   Up   BV   $229,059,138
3   Monsters Vs. Aliens   P/DW   $195,536,087
4   X-Men Origins: Wolverine   Fox   $177,364,794
5   Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian   Fox   $157,349,843
6   The Hangover   WB   $156,628,400
7   Fast and Furious   Uni.   $154,900,260
8   Paul Blart: Mall Cop   Sony   $146,336,178
9   Taken   Fox   $144,977,147
10   Angels & Demons   Sony    $128,479,731

And a curious two that aren't in the top ten:

11   Terminator Salvation   WB   $120,102,741
12   Watchmen   WB   $107,509,799

I don't think Watchmen was ever going to be in the top 10 for the year.  It wasn't filled with popular superheroes and it was a very serious, deep drama as much as it was a blockbuster.  I think a bigger surprise is probably The Hangover currently being in the top 10.  It's frackin' hilarious, though, so now that I've seen it I think it definitely belongs up there.

I still think Transformers is probably going to be number one with Harry Potter coming in at 2 but it'll have to do a good job to beat Star Trek.

I think Twilight is going to be the sleeper.  If last night was any indication, that film could go big.  The girls at Transformers were screaming last night when the Twilight trailer rolled and kicked off with Robert Pattinson...I thought they were going to rush the screen when it cut to Taylor Lautner without his shirt on.

I'm not surprised that Terminator is not in the top 10 so far this year.  That movie didn't totally suck but it didn't raise to anything special either.

I'll predict Transformers 2 in first.  New Trek at two.  And Up third.

GI Joe will and must bomb.   ;)

Looking good so far...   ;D

But yeah, there's still Potter.

I don't think Watchmen was ever going to be in the top 10 for the year. . .

Well, if it's not in the top ten for the year, or even the top twenty, for that matter, it's still the greatest motion picture ever made since the introduction of the talkie.

Or at least since The Dark Knight.

That's the sense I got from the vast Watchmen nerd fanboy fanbase, anyway.  Which I thought was a little bigger than the, say, vast Paul Blart nerd fanboy fanbase, for example.  Apparently I was wrong.

Wow, I feel uncharacteristically "with it" insofar as I've already seen 4 of those top 10 (or 5 of the 12). Yay me.

I think Transformers 2 might be the #1 movie for the year, at least the way the box office is tracking so far.  Bad reviews aside, it is just the movie everyone wants to see (similar to Spider-Man 3 in that respect, and that didn't have any problems making money).  I would think Harry Potter would finish second, although it is possible it might contend for first as well.  It will likely be a better reviewed movie, but it may not make it to Transformers like money-making levels.  I would think that TF, HP, and Trek would be the top three, regardless of order for the year, with Up and possibly Twilight: New Moon making up the rest of the top 5.  It is really tough to predict how Joe will do.  For as crappy as it looks/we've heard so far, sometimes those movies still do well.  I think efranks is right about New Moon being a sleeper for the year.  My wife is way into the books/first movie, and that fanbase in general is pretty enthusiastic.  I don't think its going to crack the top three, but top 5 is a distinct possibility.

I dunno. If Tranformers 2 is that bad, and too long, word of mouth could kill it.

The thing about New Moon is that it comes out November 20th.  So it only has about 6 weeks.  Where as most of the other top movies are summer releases so they have a longer period.  Then again with New Moon a huge portion of its gross is going to be in the first 1-2 weeks anyway...

Well, if they read the whole series, then I can't believe people would put too much into anything Twilight-related. The first movie/book were great, but overall that was the worst series ever.
