Title: Vote!
Post by: Scott on November 1, 2004, 08:05 PM
I know we don't allow Political Threads here but I want to encourage everyone to participate in one of the most wonderful parts of being a United States citizen.  The power to choose who runs this crazy madhouse and make our laws and decisions that effect our lives.

Please leave the talk of sides and issues out of here I just want to encourage everyone to do their civic duty tomorrow and be proud that in the end you had your say in the matter.

Voting is important, no doubt about it.  Much as your system (and choices, as Jesse indicates) may not be the best, it could always be worse and be completely dominated by a particular region of the country that is stupid and easily swayed ::)  I'm pleased to not have to make the choice facing the American public, but it is a choice that must be made, so at least pick your side and live with the result.

eek, grammatical error in there.

And don't forget your local candidates!  They tend to get overlooked in these election years, but don't forget your local Senators/Congressmen, Judges, etc.
They all need your votes.

But if we vote, we'll get banned from Rebelscum!  :-X
But seriously, I'm very concerned about the problems the elderly in Florida and elsewhere are having with their ballots. In 2000, Hugh Hefner got confused and voted for Bush.

I just can't wait for today to be over with. I'm so sick of seeing political ads on tv and in papers, and getting stupid phone calls with recordings from Hillary Clinton, General whoever and some others from all parties telling me to vote for them. I went out for about 3 hours on Saturday, and when I got home there were 5 voice mails - 5 - from different "celebrities" telling me who to vote for. My phone was ringing off the hook last nite with call after call for about 4 solid hours. Enough already.

Just got back, pretty quick and painless, I can't remember a time though where it took me this long to decide, the choices this year were nowhere near inspiring

I will be rooting for Alan Page to continue serving on the Minnesota Supreme Court

I just walked in myself...  45 minute wait in line to vote.  It's been a steady stream throughout the firehall all night.  The voting would go quicker if the old biddies working the election board would get their collective asses in gear.

There's 6 booths and at no point were all 6 filled.  That needn't be as painful as they made it.

There were times 1 person was voting.

My dad's cousin is the head of the group (my mother used to do it actually), and while she knows her stuff, the women working with her were ancient and were busy yakking to people they knew.   :-\

Plus it was hot...  It's November in Pittsburgh, and it's friggin' hot, and that firehall was hot...  Damn.

And they're off...!

Looks like Bush is out to an early 39-3 (http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2004/pages/results/president/) EV lead so far, but I don't think any of the battle ground states have chimed in yet, so no biggie.  But Nader's right in the thick of things, with a whopping 5,724 popular votes so far.  Go get 'em Ralph!   :P  Gonna be a wild night watching this all go down...

Gonna be even tougher since I have to watch the Lakers kick some ass tonight in their season opener.

Which should take priority, I wonder...?  Hmmm...  Yeah, Kobe!   8)

Looks like it will be four more years, weird wild day, lets hope there will be some healing and moving forward together instead of the endless partisan bickering that has marked the last 2+ years.

It's sad to me that the patriotism and unity that we all palpatably felt post 9/11 has evaporated to the same point where I feel we are at the same point as what the country was in 11/00.  I guess what I hope for is a fresh start.  I don't think its going to happen, but that's my wish (can I have a wish Deanpaul?)

According to the Kerry camp, they're not conceeding Ohio yet.

http://msnbc.msn.com/id/5651972/

There are 250,000 uncounted votes from a highly democratic county there, Kerry needs 160,000 of those to take the lead. Only 91% of Ohio is reporting.

Then there are the provisional and overseas ballots... This may turn out to be a long week. I'm not going anywhere.

I usually steer clear of political threads, and politics in general, but I really liked Scott's point here.  The reason politics bother me so much is because of all of the endless partisan bickering.  It doesn't seem like these elections, the offices, etc. are even about working toward making us a better country anymore, its just about name calling, and berating whoever we do happen to elect.  Fighting with each other gets us nowhere, and its too bad it has come to that.  Whoever ends up winning, we should be behind them.  They are our president, like it or not.  Anyways, don't want to get winded on this, but nice point Scott.

Yeah, if this drags on much longer it will only make things worse around here... I agree with ya Scott and Brian.  Hard to believe that we are basically right back where we were in 2000, only this time it's Ohio not Florida.

I hope in 2008 we go back to one of those elections where one guy gets his ass handed to him and there is NO question who's the boss (a-la Reagan 1984).  One of those elections where by 8pm Pacific one guy is ready to concede becuase he's losing by 200 electoral votes.

Not surprisingly, the Dems have taken over control of the House for the first time in twelve years.

The Senate is gridlocked currently at 49 all, awaiting the outcome of the Senate races in Montana and Virginia.

Hope everyone voted - it appears that turnout was very high, which is a good thing!

Then why does this thread even exist?  This isn't RS.  ::)
Title: Re: Vote!
Post by: Morgbug on November 8, 2006, 01:17 PM
I'm guessing it exists to remind people to vote?

As for not being RS, that's true, but it's a particularly polarizing discussion if it goes forward and it's seldom level headed in nature for you Yankees.  It seems you're either one or the other and there is no middle ground at all.  Whether it's Scum or JD, people will get angry so it's better left alone, right along with religion/abortion and all the other fun topics.  Like evolution ;)

Nice to see you guys had a good turnout down south though, that's how it should be.  We just had a civic election locally last month and voter turnout was horrible.  Mostly because the incumbent mayor is pretty decent and the challengers were more fringe than anything else.

Is it surprising that Montana is so tight?  I'd have pegged that as Republican territory.
Title: Re: Vote!
Post by: ruiner on November 8, 2006, 01:52 PM

Is it surprising that Montana is so tight? I'd have pegged that as Republican territory.

And you're right.  But things change in times of war.  I found this little nugget earlier today:

Quote
Since WWII, the party of the incumbent President has typically lost more than 30 seats in the House of Representatives and six seats in the Senate during the second midterm. In addition, in the five wartime congressional elections since 1860, the President’s party has lost an average of 32 House seats and five Senate seats."

Here in Iowa we lost a longtime conservative Congressman, Jim Leach, who has served for fifteen terms.  He lost by 6,000 votes to his Democratic challenger.

And it would appear, (according to CNN's projection) that Montana AND Virginia will go to Democrats.  Wow, that's interesting, I thought for sure we would end up 50/50 (which would still give Republicans control).

Then why does this thread even exist?  This isn't RS.  ::)

I'm guessing it exists to remind people to vote?

Yes, it still exists (and was only re-opened) as a reminder to get out and vote.

Once upon a time, politics were allowed at JD, but those days are long gone because as Brent said, the only thing politics threads do is polarize the JD community and pretty much get everyone all worked up, which inevitably spills out into other areas of the forums.

Since the election is over and polls are closed, I'm going to go ahead and re-lock (before it strays too far into the no-no topics).

See you in 2008!   ;)
