Saga Collection '06 / Target "Skirmish At The Senate" Battlepack
« on: December 15, 2005, 06:33 AM »
Target DPCI # has surfaced for one of the upcoming Battle Packs...

087-06-0863 - Skirmish At The Senate Battlepack - $19.99

The Skirmish At The Senate sounds like it could be kind of cool, but hard to say what may come packed in there.  If it's Yoda, Palpy, and 3 Shocktroopers then count me in for a set. :)  Don't need 2 of those, but I'd like 3 shocktroopers.

Anyway, there ya go guys...  Keep it handy.  I always keep a list of these in my wallet incase I'm out.

Watto's Junk Yard / Anyone Watching Charlie Brown?
« on: December 6, 2005, 08:08 PM »
Just curious...

This is a yearly thing for me.  I never miss Charlie Brown, though one time I unfortunately missed out because I couldn't find the night it was on and I felt like a big Block Head all Christmas long.  ARRRRGHHH!!!

Toy Reviews / JD Review - Commander Gree (Battle Gear)
« on: December 2, 2005, 01:26 AM »
Want to see just how bad a job Hasbro can do when they take repaints the one step that goes "too far"?  Well look no further than......

Yes, we're taking a look at one of the "final 12" this week with Commander Gree (Battle Gear).  The good commander who met his demise at the hands of everyone's little green friend, Yoda, is here and I think it's pretty well set that everyone wants a new version of this figure already.

Amazing isn't it?

Inaccuracies abound and I didn't even touch on all of them in the review I think...  Namely the holster I forgot to mention because I didn't have a good image of him showing the little pistol and holster on his hip.  Damn, I'm slacking.

But yeah I'm really disappointed in Gree, couldn't you tell?  Bad paintjob (and no the variation on the visor doesn't fix this guy), the lack of "suspenders", lack of holster and other details...  Hasbro just needs to quit stretching their budget with this figure.  They easily could have delivered a repaint of the SA Clone sculpt as an Utapau Grunt or even an "EU" Clone (people would have bought it and you know it.  Green Commanders and Black Pilots sell out and so would a Green Grunt) Trooper.  Instead we get the most half-hearted of Commanders, and one of everyone's favorites from ROTS.

I've found Gree makes a neat quasi-EU grunt as I leave hope for a "real" Gree figure.  He's not bad then when you think of him as a Trooper instead of the Commander, but he still is lacking in a big way.

Hasbro...  you got some 'splainin' to do...

Toy Reviews / Review-A-Thon: VOTC - A New Hope
« on: November 23, 2005, 01:47 AM »
Happy Thanksgiving from JediDefender.com, and for the holiday (and thanks in much part to Jared and Jeff for the extensive work they do to help me complete the reviews), we here are happy to dish out another of our Review-A-Thon specials! :)

I'm taking you, the reader, on a trip around the Vintage Original Trilogy Collection's A New Hope Wave of figures.

All 4 figures in the wave represent a real broad range of quality.  From really poor overall efforts to some of Hasbro's best work in the modern line, the VOTC kicked off with mixed messages from the Big H overall.  Check out the links for each figure and feel free to chime in here with thoughts/opinions you may have.

The VOTC line overall was a success, and I'd say it's got far more hits than misses.  the ANH wave was the biggest let down overall though unfortunately, so we'll still be waiting for that ultimate Luke or Ben for a while it seems...  Leia and Han may be pretty well covered at this point, and I'd like to see Hasbro re-use those sculpts in the future as either straight re-releases or even little tweaks to the sculpt to add a costume change here or an accessory there.

Enjoy the reviews, and enjoy the holiday! :)

Watching a lot of Vet's Day things on TV, and just thinking about other military history instances, and then seeing the cover of the latest "Empire" Comic...  I had a thought.

Does anyone think there could be "Home Guard" Divisions of Imperial Troops comprised of the species native to any specific planet?

Perhaps not decked out in Stormtrooper armor like the character on the comic's cover, but perhaps in the Army Regular uniform like the AT-ST Driver's, or some such?

The German army utilized special divisions made up of foreign soldiers during World War II.  Actually many of the troops defending the Atlantic Wall at Normandy were not German or Axis power nationals but were rather people drafted from countries taken by Germany/Italy.

This trend is common in warfare though...  A series I love on the Military Channel is on Tuesdays and it's simply about World War I.  It's amazing to see the diversity of troops "drafted" by other countries.  Africans in German uniforms were something I considered, or there was an African French division that actually fought IN France during World War I, drafted from French colonies in Africa.

It made me wonder if the Empire would resort to a Neimoidian division...  Or other species that aren't declared "hostile" maybe, like I couldn't see a Wookiee division (based on my own opinion of Wookiee's during the Classic Trilogy Era being almost like Jews under the thumb of the Axis powers), but like I could see species that are either indifferent to the Empire or who serve the Empire in some capacity being assimilated into the Imperial military, but still being kept separate entirely of what the Empire considers its main military body.

Any opinions on this?  For customizers, that could make some REALLY cool custom options...  Like a Neimoidian in an Imperial uniform...  Maybe even a Neimoidian Liason Officer...  I could even see them being given "human" CO's as a means of watching them...  akin to the black regiments during the American Civil War who were commanded by white Officers.

Maybe it's just late and I'm thinking way too hard.  ;)

Toy Reviews / JD Review: Royal Guard (Senate Security)
« on: November 11, 2005, 01:30 AM »

I love the Royal Guard (Senate Security) figures...  I do.  They're articulated heavily, they're sculpted beautifully, they're armed well, they had "the extra mile" from Hasbro by giving them softgoods and that holster...  They're great figures, and finally a really good red royal guard is out there...

So what could possibly wrong?  Well, not a whole lot really, so that's a plus.  Check the review out and lay down your own thoughts for us.

I will say, a flaw surrounding both versions is that you can't find them in any abundance.  I'm still short of my Red Guard Goal, though my blues have been amped up recently by sparce repacking of that variation.

The figures are great army builders though, and if a Rebel Fleet Trooper came out that was of this quality, you'd see me change my signature folks.  I love these figures. :)

Modern Trading / POTJ Fleet Troopers For Trade
« on: November 4, 2005, 05:36 AM »
I have 3 of the POTJ Rebel Fleet Trooper hanging around here that I'd like to trade away for some of what I'm in search of.

I'd trade them for any of the following:

-Shocktroopers (Red #6 Clone repaint)
-Any figure from the Clone Evolutions set (especially Sandtrooper)
-Tactical Ops Trooper
-Holographic Plo Koon
-Holographic Ayla Secura
-Clone Wars SA Clonetrooper
-Entertainment Earth 4-pack Clonetrooper (any variant)
-POTJ or Saga "Imperial Officer"
-Amidala w/Ascension Gun
-VOTC Stormtrooper (would trade 2 RFT's for one VOTC Stormie)

This is about all I'm really in search of heavily at the moment...  If there's no offers I'd consider selling the Fleet Troopers as well but I'd rather trade for something I need with these.  Pleas help these guys (they still suck) find a home. :)

Modern Trading / Errors/Variations & Extras
« on: November 2, 2005, 02:26 AM »
Along with my regular extras I've got, I picked up some errors and variations along the way that I really don't collect but that I hoped would help me score a figure I needed or two along the way...    There's a couple extras I've accumulated someone might need too like Ephant...

Here's what I have:

-Saga Elan Sleazebagano (With Ears)
-Commtech Jawa W/Gonk Droid (No Pegholes In Feet)
-Saga Ephant Mon (Damaged Card)
-ROTS Anakin (Sith Eyes Variation)
-Episode 1 Royal Guard (2 of the Royal Guard Figures)

These are just some things I thought someone might want or need for their collection since some of these weren't the easiest things to find.  I'd consider selling them but I'd really much rather trade for some of the things I am still on the prowl for instead...  Not asking more than what they cost me if I should sell them but please if you have some things I need, I'd dig trading right now.

I need:

-Red Shocktroopers
-501st Tactical Ops Trooper (I'd dig the Battlepack Clone too if anyone wanted to give one up?)
-Evolutions Clone Set (Obviously I'd give more than one figure for this  ;D )
-Wookiee Heavy Gunner
-Cat Minn
-Holographic Plo Koon
-Holographic Ayla Secura
-Fan Club Covert Ops Clone (Figuring I maybe actually want one, but like the Evo set I'd be generous with this)

That's about it that I need, but I do need that stuff especially the Shocktroopers...  Let me know if anything on the list is something you need and I'd gladly trade 1-for-1 on most of what I need.

Thanks for checking this out. :)

Toy Reviews / New JD Review: Tarfful (Firing Bowcaster)
« on: October 24, 2005, 01:37 AM »
Gonna take a look at one of the April 2nd launch figures this week as we dissect Tarfful (Firing Bowcaster) from the Revenge of the Sith line.

He's not Hasbro's prettiest effort from ROTS unfortunately, and given the child-factor in the Wookiee figure's popularity, I'd think it would've been in Hasbro's better interests to have made these higher quality figures.  For instance the #43 falls over rather easily and lacks articulation some.  Tarfful lacks even MORE articulation than the #43 and that's just a shame given that the figure's legs (both of these figure's legs actually) twist but don't bend.  If you're gonna make the joint/separate molds, do it right ya know?

Irregardless he suits and likely isn't one I could see Hasbro redoing anytime soon.  He'll make most collectors content to just stand there, but I envisioin him doing a little battling and pulling of people's arms from their sockets and all that.  A nicer toy simply could've come of this figure but Hasbro chose to cheap-out on this one so just check out the full review to see what makes him a nice enough statue and what makes him a less-than-fun figure to play (pose) with.

Toy Reviews / New JD Review: Clone Commanders
« on: October 19, 2005, 02:30 AM »
So we're back with a new one this week...

Another duel review, this time taking a close comparison and in-depth breakdown of the pro's and con's surrounding the Clone Commanders.  Check out the Full Review Right Here to get all the dirt on these guys.

For me, the winner was clear-cut really, but it boiled down 99% to an issue of poseability more than anything else.  What's funny is that I think the retail acceptance of one of these Commanders over the other is evidence of how Hasbro should focus on quality figures if they want the sales at retail.  One sculpt's clearly been the "winner" over the other out there in the stores while the other sculpt is a notorious pegwarmer for many.

So share your thoughts, check out the review of course, and enjoy!

Toy Reviews / New JD Review: Ask Aak (Republic Senator)
« on: October 14, 2005, 02:54 AM »

I love freakish aliens, so the Senators wave of figures in the ROTS line was nice.  A bit of a bitch to find, but nicely done all around.  That makes this review's focus a fun one to own and pick apart for what's good and what failed.  This week we're looking at Ask Aak (Republic Senator).  Not only do I love the figure, but I even liked the character in the prequals and felt he should've had a figure back in 2002 even.

Hasbro did a pretty bang-up job though on this one, and took the usually duller "Senator" figure and turned it into something special.  There's a number of ball/socket joints, the sculpt rivals the best work Hasbro's done such as Ephant Mon, and the figure's a weighty mofo to boot.  The fact Hasbro did a nice little extra by including a blaster accessory is greatly appreciated.

The lack of accessories with these types of figures is where it can usually be critiqued but all 3 figures in the wave Aak came out in had a gun and a base.  That's pretty nice work.

So check out the review at the link provided and enjoy...  And if you're lucky enough to find the figure, pick up Ask Aak without hesitating because he's a winner to me.  A pegwarmer if he shipped in huge numbers, but he's still a winner for a figure. :)

Watto's Junk Yard / Pay Pal Problem
« on: October 8, 2005, 02:01 AM »
I'm having a Pay Pal issue here...

I sent payment to someone for some stuff they sent me and payment cleared, however the person I sent it to cannot "claim" payment because it says that it is requiring that they buy postage.

I already got the package, it's a done deal, so what's this all about?  Any help would be appreciated for whom I'm trying to pay up here.

Thanks for all you Pay Pal experts!

Toy Reviews / New JD Review: AT-RT Driver
« on: September 29, 2005, 02:01 AM »

What can I say about this guy that's negative?  Not a whole hell of a lot really.

I like it when Hasbro really wow's me, especially when they're able to do it overall with a single line they put out.  ROTS really is that line to me, as it's been more solid in quality than any other individual line within the modern Star Wars brand.

The AT-RT Driver (Missle Firing Rifle) is just another notch on Hasbro's belt as far as what they dished out in quality this year.  The figure was wrongly labeled as the Turbo Tank Driver for a while, then changed to the AT-RT Driver for whatever reason.  Not sure if this was Hasbro's faux pau, or if this is what the Juggernaught crews wore on Kashyyyk as well as the walker drivers.

Either way though we get what ammounts to a near-super articulated Clone again, and that's nothing to turn your nose at.  Good articulation, great accessories, nice paint, great sculpt...  He's everything an army builder should be in my opinion.

Read the review to seemy opinions on this one overall...  Very little negative I could muster about him.  Just got two more for a nice 4-man team tonight.  Still on the prowl to expand that to a minimum of 12 I think (squad sized I figure).  And congrats to Hasbro for another quality figure.

As always give me your thoughts and feelings on this one too, and stay tuned for more reviews as my review feature, "The Good...  The Bad...  & The Ugly" dishes out all the dirt.  This one though is definitely part of "The Good" though. :)

Watto's Junk Yard / Screen Capture Software Help
« on: September 27, 2005, 04:24 AM »
This is a general request for help pertaining to "Screen Capture" software.

I'm needing to pull captures from video games on my PC, some from video/cutscenes, for general projects I have going.  I'm looking for a good screen capture software that can pull multiple images (rather than me having to dump from the game after taking one capture) and saves them in the program...

One that would pull from anything would be nice...  Like some of the cutscenes I've tried pulling screencaps from just using "printscreen" came out all digitized and wonky looking.  I don't know why (I was trying to pull captures from Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight, if you're familiar with these cutscenes that are live-action actors), but the images were not good at all.

Any help would be greatly appreciated...  I'm not familiar with this stuff at all really, I just know I need something that can take more than one screen capture and save them.  I'd really like to find something that served the purpose for now though so I could just get this stuff done, haha.

Thanks for any help! :)
