New Star Wars Animated Series in the Works (http://starwars.com/fans/media/newseries_announcement/index.html)
"Untitled Animated Star Wars Project Will Explore the Universe from a New Perspective, Blending Wry Comedy and Irreverent Fun"
So... is this series just more "Star Wars / Robot Chicken" mash-ups or is there actually a point to it?
If it wasn't for the fact it was posted today, I would have thought it was an April Fool's joke. ??? :P
-
I saw info about this first on that otheR Site and when I clicked over to StarWars.com I was expecting to see the story dated 4/1, but it was dated today.
You almost have to wonder if it was meant for 4/1 and there was a snafu on the article getting published to the site today.
You have to ask yourself when you read the premise of this series - "what's the point?"
Sure it might be humorous, but beyond that, I don't think it will last that long.
Maybe Lucasfilm is looking for something else to air with the Clone Wars so they can make it a solid hour of programming.
-
Those were my same thoughts... this is a few days late. Funny takes on SW are funny, every once in a while. Every week, it would get kind of old, and I'd think it would start to point out the silliness of it all.
-
I don't really care for Robot Chicken for the most part, but I still dig the Aluminum Falcon line. Maybe the animated aspect will spice it up some (more) ?
-
Make it a solid half hour of "Dr. Ball, M.D." and I'M SO THERE!
"I said Good Day, sir!"
-
I really can't stand Seth Green. That said, the Robot Chicken episodes are pretty funny. That also said, I'm with Darby. Continually making fun of the thing has to potential to backfire.
-
Pretty much the same thoughts from me...
For me, the "fun" of Star Wars is largely rooted in its military story that most of it centers around... It's the Civil War happening around the characters of Gone with the Wind, and that central event draws me in more just from my own personal circle of interest(s), and so the "humor" side of Star Wars is fun to me but it can get old fast to me too.
I'm interested though... The perspective sounds the most interesting, coming from the mundane... The farmer, the factory worker, the office worker... ICMG's perspective (if you take the "he's a rebel" backstory out, and just assume he's a miner carrying mining equipment).

The impression that I got from another article, was that this show would skew a little younger than Clone Wars. I think that while TCW is a fantastic show, it's appealing to older veiwers. In fact, my boys, who are 5 1/2 and 4, aren't that into it. And it's pretty violent, so I don't let them see every episode. I think that this new show will be more along the lines of Super Hero Squad, which uses the Marvel universe as a jumping off point for humor.

I think I would be okay with something like that. But if its anything like family guy I'll be mad. Family guy is funny, until you figure out that every episode is the same...

It's my understanding that this show and the rumored "Galactic Hereos" inspired show are two separate things. That could be wrong though and they could be the same, but most rumor reports say they are two separate shows. I guess we have to wait and see...
-
I'm with the majority here as well, not so sure about this. If it is indeed the same as the "Galactic Heroes" show, I could see that being ok. Our daughter loves the Marvel Super Hero Squad show, and although I'm sure it doesn't appeal to older fans - it is a nice way to introduce little ones to that "universe". If it is a seperate thing, I'm not so sure. I really enjoyed both of the Robot Chicken specials, and I'm ok with Star Wars humor in that way - a couple of specials every year (or even one a year) like Robot Chicken and Family Guy have been doing. If it was a regular series, I'm not so sure. It has the potential to make Star Wars a joke, and not just show the humor from Star Wars if you know what I mean. If they want to keep expanding the Star Wars animated/television universe, I'd rather see a CW-styled toon set in the Original Trilogy time period or something.

Just watched the trailer for this (and I think some other footage was shown at CVI). From the Robot Chicken team:

Looks kind of funny, I'm looking forward to it.

Is this the long-rumored kid's show Seth Green was supposed to be doing?
-
Yeah, it is Seth Green (and team Robot Chicken)'s show, but I'm not sure if it is so much a kid's show as an "all ages" sort of things. I thought the trailer and clips released looked kind of good, and it was nice to see some OT characters in animated form as well. Something fun anyways. The trailer and some clips shown here, I sort of liked the Han/Chewie one:

-
I'm gonna pass - I love the Robot Chicken stuff, but this looks like Robot Chicken, minus the stop-motion animation and the humor...
-
Watched the trailer to this... It's ok. I just don't know if it's for me. I thought it was funny that their animations look like Fighter POds figures though. :) Like that show has its own line now! They should've worked together and made it like a tie-in.

If that's really Billy Dee Williams, then I'll give it a shot.
I think some of the character designs are bad, even for exagerrated style. And Seth McFarlane's Emperor never sounded like even an impression of the character, just another Seth McFarlane voice.
Leia is like 10 and Han is like 30? I realize there's age gap in the live action actors, but...
-
From what I have read, it is indeed Billy Dee, which is cool (Anthony Daniels and Ahmed Best were also mentioned as reprising their roles). I think I read in some of the interviews from CVI, that Leia is supposed to be about 15 in this series, although it is tough to tell with the exaggerated animation styles.
-
This definitely piqued the interest of my son. I am sure we will give it a shot. If it turns into a 30 minute all star wars robot chicken 3D it may have its moments.
-
I noticed the Official Site has a few more clips from this show than I have seen elsewhere, especially enjoyed the Lando/Greedo one, just to hear Billy Dee in the role again:

-
Well - the clips I've seen were pretty cute. I love the animation. I'm a little sad Princess Leia has to play out like a Paris Hilton type... But perhaps it will appeal to younger kids more that way...
-
I'm kind of indifferent with Detours right now... I might dvr the first episode, watch it at my leisure, and ignore if it's just not my cup of tea. The clips, some are funny, some are kind of embarassing.
-
Here's hoping the Disney folks take one look at this junk and never EVER let it see the light of day.
-
You mean that show is still coming? I thought it was already on and cancelled. We don't need two stupid Star Wars cartoon shows.
-
Be funny if all it did was rip Clone Wars and make fun of it.

Was it? Wow - glad I missed it!
-
Unfortunately, coming on the heels of The Clone Wars' cancellation is the news that Detours has NOT yet been cancelled. ;)

Not so fast - looks like someone took a look at that steaming turd and decided that an animated Star Wars comedy wasn't that great of an idea - they have posted an article about the future of The Clone Wars and Detours on the official site here:
http://starwars.com/news/a-new-direction-for-lucasfilm-animation.html
-
Yeah, I just read that. Haw!
-
Whew, this is one I will NOT miss.
-
Horray! :D
-
I am betting that "postponed" = "not gonna happen, ever" now.
-
Seth Green did an AMA. (http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/1ml9cw/seth_green_here_actorproducer_writer_director/) Someone asked him about Detours.

Seth
Can you shed any light on what happened with Detours?

So there's actually been quite a bit of talk about this, but Detours is just on hold currently. We have 39 finished episodes and around 62 finished scripts. But that entire show was created before the decision to make more Star Wars movies, so our show (which was created by George Lucas) is an animated sitcom in the world of Star Wars, so we had a lot of conversations with Kathleen Kennedy about Star Wars in not just the next 3 years but the next 30 years, and when you're in as privileged a position as we were to be able to work on Star Wars content with its creator, you get a great sense of responsibility to the whole. I was introduced to Star Wars as a child and it was without any ironic or comedic lens, so I saw Darth Vader as scary, and I saw all of those messages very very clearly. We didn't think it made any sense, in anticipation of these new movies coming out, to spend the next 3 years with an animated sitcom as 3 generations' of kids first introduction to the Star Wars universe.
I've had a lot of parents approach me in the last few years where they showed Robot Chicken or Family Guy Star Wars before they showed them regular Star Wars. The writers on Robot Chicken and I are seeing this a lot. The same way we were introduced to classic music through Bugs Bunny or Tom & Jerry, kids are taking our ironic interpretations of He-Man or other pop culture icons and never having the opportunity to meet them sincerely. It's a really bizarre thing to wrap your head around, and because I've witnessed it firsthand, it made me more thoughtful about what we were putting it out.
I do feel that Detours is a timeless bit of entertainment. Media distribution is changing so quickly, so dramatically, that can you even imagine what distribution of content will look like in 5 years? In a day and age when Netflix series are nominated for the top accolades TV has to offer, what is to say what it will look like when the new Star Wars movie comes out? So Detours can sit on a shelf until the Star Wars movie comes out without losing any of its lustre, because what we've created is very funny, very smart and like I said before, timeless.
It's timeless, y'all.
-
A turd is a turd, in any moment of eternity.
-
That's a nice way of saying "we won't be making any more, and what was made will be treated like the Star Wars Holiday Special".
-
Timeless, my arse. You just know those things are full of dated references to crap like "twerking" and the Kardashians.
Just give us our Dr. Ball, M.D. spin-off series!
