Title: 80 figures for 2006?

Action-Figure.com (http://www.action-figure.com/index.php?name=News&file=article&sid=18955) is saying there will be over 80 figures this year.    :o

Who knows?  Then again why would that put that up unless they made a typo?  We'll find out soon enough I suppose.  It would not surprise me though with how fast the waves are coming out this year.

Post by: Jayson on January 30, 2006, 05:24 PM
Of the 6 "waves" we know of so far there are only about 50 figures. I think this 80 figure number they gave probably covers the Saga line for more than just the 06 release year.

otherwise 80 x 6.99 =560.00 (pre tax)

x 2 for us openers = $1,120 for one year, I think not

Depends on your POV I guess.

There's probably close to fifty figures in the basic carded line and thirty figures planned for release in multi-packs.

Remember, we already have ten figures released in the EE.com droid sets and seven figures in the Bounty Hunter set....

From the interview…

"First up is the new Saga range which will have over 80 basic figures from all 6 movies. "

From what I interpret, it doesn't count Deluxe, multi-packs, etc.

Two years ago (2004), I was among those predicting the line would slowly start to die starting in the fall 2006.

It remains to be seen how well the line does the farther you get from the movies being over, so I guess, technically, there is still plenty of time for the line to start to die by then.   :P

There may be 80 coming, but only half of them will be new sculpts.  What bothers me is that there was nothing shown that we haven' seen yet.

I hope it's true, can't wait to match 2005's spending quota with this year ::)

Although another cartoon figure in the saga line sounds like a plus for me, love the cartoon figs-I don't think it's the exclusive Target snowy bunny Padme either since they also mention Scorch in the same line and he's confirmed at least. So possibly 2 more cartoon figs in the line this year until the 3rd installment on video of the Clone wars then prob. more multipack sets simultaneously released.

Doesn't matter to me how many they release.  All I buy anyway is Vader, Anakin, Clones and any other random figs I think are cool.

I was another.  Given how the Carkoon wave is clogging the pegs here (Boba and Chewie sell, nada else) I'm not ready to change my opinion.  Especially if in that mix of old figures is a bunch of crappy rehashes (RFT, midget Hoth trooper).  I think US sales are a little better now as you've moved more onto the Hoth wave, but we'll see what happens.

I will clarify to say I don't think it will die and don't think I said that.  More like wither.  The dying comes the following year...

I hope it's not true. I know most of these figures are repacks, but I don't even have enough funds to get all of the figures I want/need. Now this would be okay if they dropped all the sublines, like Evolution, Deluxe, VOTC, etc. but if not, it's going to get ridiculous.
Title: Re: 80 figures for 2006?
Post by: TheBlackDog65 on January 30, 2006, 10:08 PM
80 is far too many for me to keep up with, especially with 50% being rehashed.  I will hopefully be getting some figures from the next two waves that I want, and then I am backing off, and only buying the figures I want, fit into a theme etc.

As far as the line . . . with no movies and if the TV series does not do well, we'll see how the line goes over the next 2-5 years. The key is how well do the major box retailers support the line ie Walmart and Target. When Walmart doesn't carry the line, I hate to say it (Target will quit before Wally) but the line will then be close to dying if not dead.

I saw that "80 basic figures" line yesterday too, and thought "yikes".  Who knows if it is true, or even if its just a little out of context (maybe multipacks, EE exclusives, etc. are all included in that number).  At any rate, sounds like a whole lot of stuff this year.  Seeing more new things is always great, but this type of pace might start to wear people out.  Its just too much to keep up with.  I know I'm already reconsidering what lines to collect from now on, and what to buy, just because I can't keep up with things at the increased price and all of that.

As far as the line go, its hard to say.  I could see this being the last "big" year at retail, and things gradually cooling off in 2007.  It really depends on a number of things.  How good/popular the upcoming TV series is (live action and cartoon), and also how Hasbro handles the line from now on.  I think if they really worked on re-focusing their Star Wars product line, and "trimmed the fat" so to speak in getting rid of the lines many of us complain about (Force Battlers, Transformers, Choppers, etc.) and focused in more strongly on the basic figure line it would help a lot.  I can understand having something else out there product wise, but I really think that a line like Galactic Heroes covers the kids too little for action figures and Unleashed (7") can cover more of a strictly "collector" market...even though I think basic figures are mainly bought by collectors at this point anyways.  If they keep pushing huge figure numbers (80 per year), with half or more being repacks, alongside a lot of throwaway lines, it might push the end up sooner.  It of course really depends on retail support too, and without any new movies in sight, I could see WM dropping in the future.  It seems like we've started to see more stores carry lines individually in the past couple years, and maybe that is something that will happen.  For example, WM wasn't carrying Justice League or Batman stuff (aside from movie) for awhile, with Target and TRU carrying both lines throughout that time.  Now WM seems to be picking those lines back up.  SuperHero Showdown (Marvel) was just at TRU for a year, now its at all of the Big 3.  So, maybe even if WM jumped ship, the other two could pick up the slack.  But, in the long run, WM dropping still takes its toll and would probably eventually mean the end at all retail outlets.  Who knows, maybe direct to consumer is an option, seeing as Hasbro has done that with parts of the Joe line.

Post by: JoshEEE on February 2, 2006, 05:51 PM
With the movies being re-released (in 3D even?) plus the potential for a TV show, I'd say we won't see the last of Star Wars anytime soon.

The last "big" year for retail?  Something tells me that might have been last year.  This year, it's all about repacks and repaints.  There are a few new sculpts, but most of these figures are either straight repacks, repaints...or kit-bashes.  I'm not saying I don't like the new Gonk (with his new hat) or the figure stands with the names of the characters on them (in case I"d forgotten)....but I'm able to leave most of the SAGA line on the shelves for other collectors so far this year.  I'm only buying the new figs, and so far...they're few and far between.

Title: Re: 80 figures for 2006?

This could be close to true if you count:

Basic Saga waves:  57 figures announced
HOF2 wave:  12 figures announced
Demise of Grievous:  1 figure announced
VOTC:  5 figures announced

That comes to 75 figures...
maybe we'll get 5 more VOTC to make it 80 (why not, there were 12 original VOTC.  Thats 4 from each movie, 3 new ones for ANH, 2 new ones for ROTJ announced)  Just add the send in Lucas Stormtrooper (no movie) and 3 from ESB and 1 from ROTJ and we have 80 figures, the same amount of VOTC from the 3 movies, and the Lucas "extra" figure.

Sounds about right to me.  I think basic just means carded 3 3/4" figures.

This does look like a break-neck pace. I think 2006 is the year of nailing the carded collector. Probably 60-70% of these can be passed-by if you only want new figures or major differences.

Looks like the folks at 4-inches (http://www.4-inches.de/inhalt/news.htm) have a new rumor list (thanks to Jayson for the heads up ;)):

I'll just drop the "new" stuff in here...

Basic Figures
TSC/#039: Chief Chirpa (Ewok Leader)
TSC/#040: Moff Jerjerrod (Death Star 2 Commander)
TSC/#041: Death Star Imperial Gunner
TSC/#042: C-3PO (Ewok Deity) with Ewok Throne
TSC/#043: Emperor Palpatine (Death Star 2)
TSC/#044: Luke Skywalker (Endor Battle Poncho)
TSC/#045: Darth Vader (Endor Capture)
TSC/#046: Rebel Trooper (Endor Bunker)
TSC/#047: Darth Maul (Holographic Sith Lord)
TSC/#048: Obi-Wan Kenobi (TBA)
TSC/#049: Rep Bean (Gungan Warrior)
TSC/#050: Naboo Royal Soldier
TSC/#051: Podracer Pilots (2-Pack)
TSC/#052: Graga (Mos Espa Market Stallholder)
TSC/#053: Rebel Honour Sentry Guard
TSC/#054: Han Solo (Rebel Ceremony Yavin)
TSC/#055: Luke Skywalker (Rebel Ceremony Yavin)

Take it with a grain of salt since it's just a rumor list (and it still has extra Endor figures on there which weren't announced).

The Fan's Choice fig really makes you scratch your head.  Some of the Endor figs have already been cancelled (or debunked).  If it is true, the Naboo Solider not being a pilot as we thought kind of sucks, and still no word on which version of TPM Obi we're getting, or which two pod racers.  Very odd.
Title: Re: 80 figures for 2006?

It will be interesting to see how much of this list turns out.  The majority of the "basic figures" on that list have been rumored before (aside from name differences/cancellations - and the Fan's Choice figure), so no big surprises there I guess.  The VTSC and Unleashed stuff is new though, and I really hope those pan out.  I'd be ok if that list sort of capped things off for the year, with around 60 basic figures instead of 80.  It could be a rough year for spending otherwise.

Keeping MOC carded figures especially if the person buys the same figure 12 times b/c of different cardbacks/pack-ins or whatever would take up a lot of space and careful packaging.

I do not envy them at all, I saw the light many years ago ;D

Wayyyyyy too much. Wayyyyy too many re-releases that were available wayyyyy too recently. A few here and there for the cool cardbacks, and that's it for carded this year.  Tataooine and Hoth will get packed away with the UGH and a few troopers, that should do it for my 2006 carded collection.
Title: Re: 80 figures for 2006?
Post by: Rob on June 12, 2006, 11:37 PM
I collect carded and loose.  I've been overlapping cardbacks so the bubbles touch for over a decade now - but ROTS packaging screwed that lal up.  The current bubbles allow for it to an extent - but those ROTS packages take up 3 times more room than figures used to.  If I run out of wall space (a distinct possibility over the next year or two) the Episode III figures are first in line to be boxed up.  No question about it.

I've returned to my selective ways of old and am only buying figures now that 1) I really like 2) Don't have 3)replace an older figure with more articulation 3) are something entirely new tha I want. 4) are main characters that fit a theme like Jedi, Clones etc.

As a result I know with the Endor wave I will only be getting around 4 figures, and Naboo may actually be a wave where I only get 1 or 2 figures or I just may pass on as nothing is really pressing there. I do like the pod racer figures so I may get them. Then again, I have enouh Ep. I figures to last a lifetime so why do I need more of em? I've said it before but time for Hasbro to earn my money and time for me to use some of that money to buy books for my classes literature circles (nope, district and school won't pick those up for me).
Title: Re: 80 figures for 2006?
Post by: Darth Broem on June 13, 2006, 09:03 AM
I was not surprised by the amount mainly because of the success of ROTS.  I assumed they would put a lot of product out early and they certainly did.  However, it did force me to be selective this year.  Then again I had to be last year as well.  There was quite a bit of ROTS product I would like to have gotten but had to cut things out.  Same with this year.  I am actually a bit happy for some of those Heroes and Villains repacks.  I might actually buy that Padme and a few others.  Maybe.  At least I get another shot at them.

Now that SS has come along with their 12 inch line I have to watch it even more.  AT least there is more product out there than not enough.  So, I can't really complain about the quantity I suppose.  The quality of some of the products are so-so of course.

My main complaint this year is the prices of the exclusive figures.  But that's me.
Title: Re: 80 figures for 2006?
Post by: Dressel Rebel on June 13, 2006, 10:19 AM

My main complaint this year is the prices of the exclusive figures.  But that's me.

And me too.

"Exclusive" figures are twice as expensive as they should be (for no reason but the greed of the retail store and Hasbro) and they usually amount to a simple repaint of a sculpt that they already have.  It's never anything earth shattering.

I am amused at all of the Demise of Grievous figures clogging up the pegs at Target right now.

Still and all, I'm fine with the exclusives until the day they release a figure that I really want, or an army builder like the Galactic Marine, as a Target Exclusive for $13.  Not only would it be a bitch to find, when you do it'd be too expensive to army build it like you want to.

His hands changing slightly hardly constitutes a "new" figure, but it's slightly different.  Other than that, that figure so far appears to be a repack of the Saga Jedi Luke with some new stuff...   The hands may even be re-used from another figure actually.  I'd say Kenobi or Vader are the re-release though, and Luke is in the "sorta new" column because of the hands.  OCB can elaborate on that though more.

Correct, Luke is sorta new mainly due to the accessories and the new hand, Obi-Wan still blows chunks, I guess he's sorta new too because of the robe
Title: Re: 80 figures for 2006?
Post by: Darth Broem on June 14, 2006, 03:12 PM
Well Hasbro is probably going to continue with this repacking, rehashing, repainting from now on.  They will bust out some all new figures and resculpts obviously.  Their reasoning will be "We have to put money into making sculpts for the upcoming animated series and TV series.  That is our primary focus now.  Meanwhile enjoy our "new" figures that have been issued several times now."

Of course we will see new figures to but that line of thought above will be coming out shortly.  If there is a nice new SA figure we can bet their will be a higher price tag on them....such as the VOTC type figures, Evolutions, etc.
Title: Re: 80 figures for 2006?
Post by: CHEWIE on June 14, 2006, 03:59 PM
I guess we've proven we'll pay more for better figures, so Hasbro's gonna keep making sure that ultimate figures are offered via VOTC or Evolutions.  Then they might repack it later.  There's still some really good new figures in the regular line too though, like the AT-AT driver.  And to be honest, I am ok with the Tatooine Wave not having the knee articulation... I'd rather them have it of course, but I am so happy with the rest of each figure (Hammerhead, Hem Dazon, Garindan) that I can't complain about it.

2006 Saga Collection -
75 Basic Figures (counting the 2 different Endor Rebels)
12 Episode III Heroes and Villains Figures
14 Episode III Greatest Battles Figures

With the recently announced "final 22" for 2006, that brings us to 101 basic figures for 2006 (and that's not even counting the exclusives, pack-ins, or multi-packs).

I still wanted the basic line's number count to go to at least 100, in order to make the first zero worthwhile. ::)

2006 Saga Collection -
75 Basic Figures (counting the 2 different Endor Rebels)
12 Episode III Heroes and Villains Figures
14 Episode III Greatest Battles Figures

I thought my wallet had smoke coming off of it...  This year's felt about that pace to me, but I didn't really believe it.  Now that you break it down though Jeff it's pretty clear we've been shelling out a lot for figures.  $7 a pop too...  Yeesh.  That's a whole lotta dough, especially if you're doing 1 of each irregardless.

I was just wondering how many we ended up - and after seeing your post Jeff - yikes.  That's a whole mess of figures.  I didn't pick up everything along the way, and thankfully have passed on the "Heroes and Villains" stuff so far, but man that's a lot of stuff.  I thought this year would be a nice step down after the spending spree of 2005 with all the ROTS hoopla.  Now, it seems like I could have spent almost as much by the end of the year.  And now the news from Comic Con of (at least) 60 basic figures for next year - not counting Battle Packs, exclusives, or the inevitable "Final Repaint/Repack Wave".  A big reason why I have to cut back on collecting almost anything else outside of this.  I really, truly feel for the carded completists - these years have to be awful.

That is amazing- the funny thing is it made me take some items back, and plan on buying less. I had really considered trying to keep a set of saga on the card like I did OTC. But OTC clocked in at under 50 figures. I like the cardbacks for the ROTS repacks, but not enough to keep them if I can't have a whole set. Now I'm down to about 25-30 carded from this year, and that includes the UGH set.

I was just looking through the list of figures for the year (in the Official Checklist Thread), and counting up the number of "all new" figures for this year, and it doesn't look like a whole lot this year in the basic line.  When you take out repainted figures and include the astromechs, holos and clones - which are technically new figures, but don't take any new tooling for Hasbro most of the time.  I think I see less than 30 (out of 74) when looking for true, all new sculpts (for the entire figure, not just new heads like the Cantina Han/etc.).  I'm not including the great 5 figures from the VTSC line, or the battle packs, exclusives, etc.  But overall, in the 74 basic figure releases we should see by the end of the year, it looks like less than half were new sculpts?  I guess the OTC line only had like 7 or so, but that wasn't all of the releases for the entire year.  Not saying I'm unhappy with the line this year, but the repacks/repaints might be getting out of hand in some cases.  Like it has been mentioned by others, if its from POTF2 era it should probably be resculpted or not released at all.  Repainted clones and astromechs are fine with me, but some of the others might be getting excessive.  Anyways - just random thoughts...

And the OTC figures were only $4.99!

I saved myself a lot of money due to repacks, rehashes and crappy BPs.  All in all I am happy.
