You can search by zipcode and find out if there are any registered sex offenders in your area.
There were 52 in my zipcode and while I'm not a parent, it certainly is disturbing nonetheless.

I don't think this is entierly up to date. In fact, 2 live in this town alone. There was a bit "to do" about it in the paper, at school board meetings. This thing says 0 live in this area. I know it to be false because one lives across the street from my sisters house.

I believe it's dependent on your local area's database being current. I think it's a one-stop check for multiple databases.
I don't mean for this to make people paranoid or anything - but if by some chance there is one in your immediate vicinity, I'd think most people would want to know.

Wow, 34 just in my zip code. Oddly enough the one closest to me also happens to be the only female on the list, and is only a year older than me. It's weird to see how many of them are in the 25-30 age group.

Man, that's NOT cool. Didn't count 'em all up in our area, but it looked to be in the 20's or so. Lotta old farts too, at that. Yuck.

One of them is on my street - right across from my house.
My address is 1413 Apple Ridge Ct... his is 1408 Apple Ridge Ct.

You don't need to have kids to check it out, it's not limited to strictly pedophiles. Only two in my town which is two too many as far as I'm concerned.

We checked this out a while ago. We're lucky not to have any within a few miles, but one of the schools we were looking at to send our 5 year olds has 6 within one mile.
The worst part about this is that everyone wants to give the rights to the sex offenders, but none to the children. >:(

No doubt, Mikey. We looked through our local list last night, and one street in particular, with two different sex offenders, caught our eye. It's a street in the middle of a retirement community actually, that my wife goes jogging through several times a week. Sketchy. Even if they're like 60+ years old and wouldn't have a chance in hell at chasing Patty down, it's still enough to warrant a change in her jogging route now. :-\

You can ship Patty out here if she needs a running buddy. I'm fairly certain you won't be going with her to offer protection :o

Got that right, Canada is still debating this in government ::) No list, no website to check. No real way of knowing. The two most important people in my life are women. Gotta confess though, anyone does anything to them it will be me spending time in prison.

Agreed. I'm usually a laid back guy, and it takes a lot for me to snap.
But if the day were to come that I find out that either my wife or daughter are harmed...

I changed the thread title to me more inclusive and not just specific to parents.

And these lists don't even include those that have not been caught and those that have the potential to be offenders.
Maybe I'm paranoid or just being overly safe, but I tend to just think anyone is a potential criminal unless I know them very well. I always hear stories about ministers or cops that are convicted of these heinous crimes. Plus, we live in a crappy area, so it wouldn't surprise me if most of the neighbors were potential criminals.
Just another happy, happy society. :(

If anything were to happen to my sisters, at all, I think it would be a dark sad day for whoever hurt them.
Just a quick question I thought I would propose:
What about a registry of spousal and child abusers, including a list of what classes they have taken to remedy it? Like anger managment, and so on? I think it would be fair for the women, and men out there, to be able to know if some one has a history of hitting women or children, especialy those related to them. I grew up in an abusive home for most of my life, till I got out, and I think a registry like this would help alot of people, and possibly help prevent at leasta few cases from happening.

There's one in the apartment complex just down the street from my building. My roommate usually walks down this road when exercising. If something happened with this prick, I'd be pissed off, since her parents expect me to watch over her.

Zip-zero in 55433. It's a good thing, too, because my apartment complex does background checks, which I am glad to see are apparently through, not to I live 10 feet away from both a middle school/high school, and my complex is crawling with children.
