Title: A Song of Ice and Fire / Game of Thrones Figures!
Post by: Jeff on November 11, 2011, 03:51 PM
You knew it was only a matter of time...

HBO and Dark Horse Announce Game of Thrones Partnership! (http://www.darkhorse.com/Blog/717/hbo-and-dark-horse-announce-game-thrones-partnersh)

Quote
One of the most popular and critically acclaimed cable television shows of 2011 was Game of Thrones, created by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss for HBO. The hit series is based on A Song of Ice and Fire, the best-selling fantasy novel series by George R. R. Martin.

Dark Horse Deluxe is proud to announce, in partnership with HBO, a vast Game of Thrones product line debuting in the spring of 2012, leading up to the show’s second-season premiere in April. Licensed product categories derived from the series will span a large range, including statues, busts, and action figures; prop and jewelry replicas; and barware, stationery, and other collectibles. This exciting new line of products debuts with a range of branded magnets, patches, playing cards, coaster sets, and more.

“We are delighted to be part of HBO’s licensing roster for Game of Thrones. We are big fans of the television adaptation,” said Dark Horse’s VP of Product Development, David Scroggy. “We are working closely with HBO to develop a line of products inspired by the series that will delight the fan base.”

Look for the first round of items in Diamond’s January Previews catalog; they will arrive in specialty retailers everywhere in March of 2012.

Based on the best-selling fantasy book series A Song of Ice and Fire, by George R. R. Martin, Game of Thrones debuted on HBO in March 2011. In a land where summers span decades and winters can last a lifetime, trouble is brewing. From the scheming south and the savage eastern lands, to the frozen north and the ancient Wall that protects the realm from the darkness beyond, two powerful families are engaged in a deadly cat-and-mouse game for control of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. As betrayal, lust, intrigue, and supernatural forces shake the four corners of the Kingdoms, their bloody struggle for the Iron Throne will have unforeseen and far-reaching consequences.

I am so, so , so all over a Ned Stark action figure for my desk.  :)

Frankly I'm surprised it took them this long. How did Dark Horse score those though? I figured there would be some bigger players vying for that action.

Cool news!  Although I'm wondering just how extensive they'll allow the character selection to be.  The prologue to the first book which features that shadowy White Walker was deliberately mysterious.  A figure might give too much away in that case.

I've seen some Game of Thrones merch listed on EE.  It seems a little bit limited at the moment.  Some mugs & posters so far.

It seems that Dark Horse is ramping up their Game of Thrones offerings.  EE now has a section dedicated to merch based on the show (http://www.entertainmentearth.com/hitlist.asp?theme=Game+of+Thrones).  But the only pieces that have caught my eye are these mini-busts of Dany with the dragons:

Lame that Dark Horse is going with more or less 7" Statues as "action figures"

Agreed.  Although it looks like a lot of companies are being very conservative when it comes to licensed product lines.  A full range of action figures can be a risky proposition from a financial standpoint.

Still, I'd be very happy if a company like NECA got their hands on this license.  They've shown that they can do some amazing work.

I had no idea these were even coming out.  I'm definitely looking forward to seeing some more of them.  But the whole action figure segment seems a little weak right now, and I have serious concerns if even this line is going to perform well.

I saw a couple of the new Funko figures yesterday at a Barnes & Noble store of all places. They had a fairly sizable display stand near the front of the store that had photos of each of the 6 figures in this first wave. I would've liked to have gotten Ned Stark, but no luck there. They only had Jon Snow and Danaerys Targaryen. Both looked ok in person, although Jon's beard looks a bit scraggly.

They're tagged at $19.99 each, which seems to be the going rate for 6" figures these days. I'm just wondering what other retailers might be picking up the line.

More to look forward to with the Funko Game of Thrones line.  These new figures were on display at Toy Fair as seen in THIS FWOOSH POSTING (http://thefwoosh.com/2014/02/toy-fair-2014-funkos-game-of-thrones-legacy-series-2):

-Robb Stark
-Khal Drogo
-Brienne of Tarth
-Danaerys Targaryen (blue dress)
-Jaime Lannister
-Arya Stark

Went to B&N today, all sold out. Pretty much only want Jon Snow.

Saw the Tyrion figure a couple of days ago.  And AGAIN, like the Jon Snow I had seen before, the paint apps were not good.  On both the Jon Snow and Tyrion figures their beards / 5 o'clock shadow was really messed up.  It was more on the sides of their faces than around their mouths.  And it doesn't give me hope for the line if they can't get some basic paint apps right.
Title: Re: A Song of Ice and Fire / Game of Thrones Figures!
Post by: evenflow on April 12, 2014, 04:59 PM
I opted to pass on these after seeing them in person. Sculpts are too soft and don't look enough like the actors.

On the flip side, I bought a bunch of the GOT mystery mini figures and love them. Pulled a 1/144 Jamie from B&N. Couldn't believe it. Still need the 1/144 dragon and the white dragon to complete the set. Also need the GITD Walker but can live without that one. I hope they have more waves planned.

I finally found a Jon Snow that looked good, and I picked that one up.  All told, I've only seen Jon Snow, Tyrion and Danaerys.  I really want to see the White Walker, Hound and Ned Stark in person before making a decision on any more acquisitions.

Hit up B&N and bought some more mystery minis. They had just put a new box out so i had first pick. Pulled the 1/72 GITD White Walker. All caught up except for the 1/144 dragon.  :-\

After seeing these in person a few times, I decided to pick some up.  So far I've got the Hound, Danaerys, and Tyrion.  Need to get Jon and Ned and unsure of the White Walker yet.  I hope we get a Tyrion in casual attire since he rarely wears armor.

I guess we've got until August(ish) before wave two.  I'm surprised we're getting another Dany already (I know she changes clothes) and the fact there's a lot of females in there (not complaining).  Hopefully wave three will have Tywin, Cersei, Theon, Hodor, Bran, Catelyn... or Joff or Sansa though they like to spread it across houses, so there might be Viserys or some Tyrells, Martells, the Mountain.

I picked up a Ned Stark a few weeks back.  The likeness was better than I expected.  Ned is in his King's Landing gear.  I would've liked him to have his cloak.  Especially since Ned comes with both his regular sword as well as Ice, his great sword.

Yeah, Ned's likeness if very good on the ones I've seen.  It's just his hair has highlights.  But, yeah, it'd be cool if he had the heavy cloak.  Anyone have problems with parts breaking?

How is everyone displaying their figures?  Are you buying 6" stands?  If so, which work (and do they work with the SW 6" figures?)  Just worried that the part that holds the scabbard on The Hound will break if he falls.

Yeah, i noticed the same thing when I looked it up too, but I am skeptical. This could be one of those deals like Target where all the figures are under one generic DPCI code. I'll definitely hit a few B&N's up today just to be sure though. Will report back later...

The regular version of the White Walker looks pretty cool.  I hope that at some point we get the Night's King White Walker that was saw in season 4, too.  The glowing feature seems like it would be more along the lines of something from the books.

Thanks a lot brother, I was able to score one of these on the way home from work today! He definitely looks cool,  looking forward to trying out the glowing feature tonight. I was hoping for more of a traditional fluorescent green rather than the blue accents, but I guess blue fits better with the character.

I scored a glowing White Walker, too. But I didn't realize they were promoting it as a Comic Con exclusive. But to have it in stores nationally during SDCC?  That's a pretty cool promotion.

On another note, has anyone been able to get a decent version of the Hound?  One that at least has decent paint apps?

Maybe Hasbro can learn something from Funko since not everyone can make it to a "Big Con" where they have such exclusives.  So Kudos to Funko for sharing it with everyone.  If those at the cons want something special, then maybe make a packaging change and not include or make a figure that fans would want *[cough] 6" Han Solo in Carbonite [/cough].

Apparently, there was another SDCC exclusive: Tyrion Lannister (Battle of Blackwater)... looks the same as the previous release, but comes with a helmet.

And, Walgreens has an exclusive GoT figure of Tyrion as the Hand... just found that out from someone on yakface.  So, I guess there are other figures to look for.
Title: Re: A Song of Ice and Fire / Game of Thrones Figures!
Post by: P-Siddy on August 4, 2014, 04:37 PM
So, I hit up 4 Walgreens and came up with nothing in regards to Tyrion Lannister... none of them carried the GoT figures, so I wonder if I'll find any at all?
Title: Re: A Song of Ice and Fire / Game of Thrones Figures!
Post by: P-Siddy on August 15, 2014, 01:24 PM
Since my last post, I've scored two of the Hand versions of Tyrion.  I found one today that had better paint apps on the Hand pin than the other one.  I understand that it's tough to get the gold pain all down the point flawlessly, so I wasn't too concerned, but I saw one that was flawless and grabbed it.  But, there are issues with paint apps.  On some the palm joint is not painted so it looks like Tyrion used the privy and used his palm to clean up...  Otherwise, I've seen the 5 o'clock shadow and no shadow at all.  But mostly, I think they are decently done and am glad to have this figure.  It's hard to believe I'll have to start checking for wave 2 soon.
Title: Re: A Song of Ice and Fire / Game of Thrones Figures!
Post by: Nicklab on August 19, 2014, 07:32 AM
I've checked a couple of Walgreens stores, but no sign of the exclusive Tyrion.
Title: Re: A Song of Ice and Fire / Game of Thrones Figures!
Post by: P-Siddy on August 19, 2014, 10:25 AM
I've seen the on an endcap display and then the other Walgreens where I picked up the better paint app they had them on a shelf not even in the toy aisle (but there were other toys there)... so the overflow in the center aisle.

Nick (and anyone else still looking), there's a Funko forum called funkofunatic.com where you can join up and there's a thread about said Tyrion and there's a lady who works at a Walgreens that is helping out people that can't find them by giving locations.  I also wrote to Walgreens and inquired if a local store would get these and they called and told me the location of one in a week's time... which was the day I went out on my own and found it out in a WG in the boonies.

She said Sept 8th is when they are supposed to be releasing, but she said her store is at the end of the distribution "ring"... so likely later for her... and probably me since it seemed my area was the last to get them (than the far suburbs).

Finally saw the Walgreens exclusive Tyrion. It looks like they're actually somewhat plentiful.  Oddly enough, I was in a rush when I was in Walgreens so I didn't have a chance to pick it up.  But the thing is, it seems like THIS Tyrion probably should have been the general release version.  It's much truer to Tyrion as he appears in 90% of the series.

Picked up the exclusive King's Hand Tyrion today along with the wave 1 Danaerys.  Dany was the last figure from wave 1 that I still needed.  And at $16 and change a piece I thought it was a decent buy.
Title: Re: A Song of Ice and Fire / Game of Thrones Figures!
Post by: P-Siddy on September 24, 2014, 12:37 PM
So, now that Target is carrying these, I ran by some (forgot about it since I was mainly checking for SW figures) and stopped a moment.  Something was different about that wave 1 Tyrion.  It was the SDCC exclusive Blackwater battle Tyrion complete with helmet and scar!  So I picked it up.  There is a sticker that says it's a 2014 Con exclusive as well.
Title: Re: A Song of Ice and Fire / Game of Thrones Figures!
Post by: Nicklab on September 25, 2014, 01:57 PM
Really?!?!  That's surprising.  Although I've gotta say, it's pretty cool that they're recognizing Tyrion as much as they are in the GoT line.  This makes for a full three versions of Tyrion in the line, and we haven't even seen wave 2 hit retail in any sort of quantity yet.

Oh, I was definitely surprised to see that helmet in there.  Now it makes me want to go back and see if there are difference with the other figures... say a white or green dragon with Dany... though I don't want to buy 3 of the same figure for the dragons.
Title: Re: A Song of Ice and Fire / Game of Thrones Figures!
Post by: Nicklab on October 3, 2014, 12:23 PM
I just picked up that exclusive armored Tyrion at Target.  But when I did I also saw versions of Jon Snow and Danaerys Targaryen that had exclusive tags on the packages.  I'm not completely sure what the differences are between the original offerings.  But I think I have an idea.

I'm thinking that in the case of Jon Snow his sword is different.  I think this exclusive version is supposed to be with Longclaw, the Valyrian steel sword given to him by Lord Commander Mormont.  And in the case of Dany?  I *THINK* it's probably the dragon that's different.  The one I saw at Target looked like Drogon was the pack-in dragon.

I found some images of Jon and Dan with the exclusive stickers and compared them t what I had... I couldn't find a difference (besides the sticker).  Maybe someone else can point out something?

My Jon Snow has Longclaw in the original release... so I don't know.  Maybe it has better paint apps?

Mine looks like it has inscriptions on the blade... or at least, decorative.  hmm, now I'm curious.

I'm thinking now that there may be no difference between these Jon Snow figures after all.  I haven't opened my own Jon Snow yet.  What I'm wondering about the Longclaw sword is this:  are the inscriptions only on one side of the blade, and a fuller (groove) on the other side?  Because until now I had only seen the groove of the sword in the packaging for Jon Snow.

Hmmm.  Then it seems that maybe those Summer Convention exclusive stickers on the packages of the figures at Target are just a little bit misleading.

I also just took a look at my wave 1 Dany.  I didn't notice any differences between the figure I saw at Target yesterday which had the sticker and the one I have at home that I bought elsewhere.

Well, it looks like Series 2 should be our today.  I wonder if they'll be easy to find or not. Most places have Series 1 out still.  Maybe a local TRU.  They never restocked so hopefully they'll get these.

So, the helmet for the exclusive Tyrion does not fit on the regular release's head.  Kind of bummed about that.  Of course, Tyrion is only in the armor and scarred for a brief period.

I found some of wave 2 today at a B&N. I saw the whole wave except for Arya and Robb Stark. Khal Drogo and Brienne both looked pretty cool, but I left those. Blue dress Dany was alright, too. But I decided to get the King slayer. Jaime Lannister translates pretty well as an action figure, and especially in the Kings Guard armor. I'll pick up the rest of the wave a little bit at a time.

any word on a Wave 3?

Actually, I heard rumor that Tywin Lannister is in the mix for wave 3... hopefully with Cersei.

As for wave 2, I'm wondering what exclusives will pop up with these figures.  I can only think of Dany with the dragons... or Dany with the eggs (though it probably be wave 1 Dany then).

I get the sense that Funko is still testing the waters with this line.  The pacing seems a little bit on the deliberate side with the releases.  My gut feeling is that they'll try to time the release of Wave 3 with the beginning of the new season on HBO.

As for my own wishlist?

-Ser Davos Seaworth
-Tywin Lannister
-Ser Jorah Mormont
-Sansa Stark
-Robert Baratheon
-The Mountain

I think action figure manufacturers are just being somewhat risk averse.  Sales across that sector are down.  Plus, when you look at all of the licensed figure lines that have flopped or been executed poorly in recent years?  You begin to understand why there's a slow pace on these releases.

But back to Game of Thrones...

I just saw this on Twitter (http://www.toychestnews.com/Home/1/1/4/678?articleID=155881).  Dark Horse is releasing more of their own GoT figures (which seem more like maquettes).  And I think these just wound up in the new Diamond Previews.  It's an interesting lineup.  And some of the sculpts on the Dark Horse GoT line look cool, but the lack of posability has kept me away from these.

I keep hearing that Wave 3 is a go, according to funko's funkofanatics.com site... supposedly it comes from someone within the Funko family.  It's just that the figures haven't been revealed yet.

But it's tough to know how they will approach the line.  I mean, there are so many characters they can do, but where is the line drawn?  Rickon Stark comes from a prestigious family, yet his role is so small that does he warrant a figure?  Bran?  Well, it would make sense if he came with Hodor.

I almost caved on Jaimie, Brienne, and Drogo at Barnes & Noble last week. All of the wave 2 figures looked amazing, and a huge step up from wave 1. I am still holding off on this line though, but if Funko makes a Bronn figure I grab it for sure.

Rickon is one character that's questionable at best for the Funko line.  I could really only see Funko making a Rickon figure if and ONLY IF  Rickon comes back into the fold later in the series.  Most likely being played by an older actor.

And I agree on Bran.  If Funko does something similar to what Dark Horse did, and offers Bran with Hodor, then I could see that offering working.

Then there are so many other characters to consider.  Does Gendry merit a figure?  What about Pycelle?  Would Varys make for an interesting action figure?  These are characters that are really important in the scope of the series.  But do they translate for the purposes of an action figure line?

As for characters that I DO think make sense?  Others include Ser Barristan Selmy, Bronn, and Lord Commander Mormont.

I saw some of wave 2 in a TRU store today.  It's nice to see that Funko is keeping things current across a number of retail chains.  Robb and Arya Stark both look pretty good.

What didn't look good?  The $21.99 price tag at this particular TRU store.  Especially since I saw some wave 1 figures at another TRU store for $17.99.  That kind of pricing inconsistency is beyond annoying.

I snagged one of these last week at Target.  They were down to just $9.99, so had to test one out.  Pretty solid figures at that price, but I Can't imagine they will stay around long at most retailers the way they seem to be pegwarming.

That is not a good sign IMO, especially given the fact there has not even been 1 confirmed figure from that wave leaked to this point. (Although I do specifically recall them saying Tywin would be coming)

It makes me wonder if Funko is trying to space out these releases so that they don't oversaturate the market.  Still, with season 5 of the HBO show due in April this would have been the ideal time to exhibit a third wave of figures.

I would bet most fans didn't even know about these.  Do they advertise them anywhere?  I have only ever seen them at Walgreens and in crummy pairs on Target back end caps.  $20 price point probably steers away a lot of interest as well.
Title: Re: A Song of Ice and Fire / Game of Thrones Figures!

$20 price point probably steers away a lot of interest as well.

They're still at $20 at B&N and online stores.  Targets have them at $9.99 now.  Walgreens are $16 or $17, I believe.

I think the figures are cool, but I think the market was over-saturated by Wave 1, and the way it was done was poor, too.  B&N was the only Brick and Mortar retailer that a person could buy the figures for months.  The figures weren't HTF, either.  Just before wave 2 is supposed to hit Walgreens got Wave 1 (along with an exclusive Tyrion) so the only figure of interest to most fans was likely Tyrion.  Then Target got into the game with wave 1 (along with exclusive SDCC Tyrion) so there was only one figure to interest fans there and the rest of the wave 1 was left to peg warm.

Wave 2, I feel, had two bad character choices.  Another Danerys, while cool, could have been better suited for later wave.  I feel it's too soon to have another Dany in a new outfit when there are other characters out there to explore.  Khal Drogo (again, cool) might have been better off for a later wave.  They could characters that are more important like Cersei or Joffrey, Tywin, Hodor and Bran, Bronn... I'm just not sure how deep they can go into the characters at a $20 price point (I guess if people keep buying, they'll do it).

Rumor has it that a third wave is in fact in the works.  But I think Funko is waiting for more of wave 2 to sell through before presenting it to collectors.  The retail presence has been okay, and there has been some stock at TRU as well.  I'm just wondering what major characters they would go with for a third wave.

Not that great of a deal when Target is clearing these out at $9.99 per figure.  I've managed to pick up almost all of wave 2 at Target stores over the past few weeks AND inspect the paint apps in the process.  Some of the paint jobs on these have been so spotty that you need to see the figures in person to avoid an outright disaster.  I was able to pick up Brienne, Drogo, Danaerys and Robb Stark all at reduced prices thanks to a little bit of patience.  The only wave 2 figure I paid full price for was Jaime Lannister.  And now I only have to find Arya Stark to finish the 2nd wave.
Title: Re: A Song of Ice and Fire / Game of Thrones Figures!

With the way these aren't selling, I'm thinking we won't see a wave 3.  Of course, wave 1 was overproduced.  I'd love more, but I think Funko should refrain from one season characters (Ned Stark excluded... I could be missing a few others).

Along with paint (I've never had too many issues... maybe The Hand Tyrion with his palm and the pin), but with Brienne, I found a lot that had flashing issues where on the head where meets the neck.

Have you tried Barnes and Noble (if you have one where you are)?  That usually where I find them.  I haven't seen Wave 2 at Target either and I suspect I won't since the pegs are full with Wave 1 still.

Along the Legacy thread, but not GoT, I'm a huge Firefly fan and am glad to see Funko touch this series, but I'm weary to invest in it as I've heard that the only way to get Inara, Book, and the Tams is if Wave 1 does well.  If they guarantee I'll get all 9 regulars I'd be happy to pick them up... but as of now I am not sure.

Well, Barnes and Noble finally started to clearance some of the Wave 2 figures at 50% off, so I caved and picked up Brienne and Daenerys 2.0 last night. Time to pick up the Wave 1 guys at Target I guess, and then hope the rest of Wave 2 hits clearance later this summer.

I figured 15 figures was not prohibitive from a cost or space standpoint, so what the heck.

It looks like McFarlane Toys now has part of the Game of Thrones toy license (http://www.ew.com/article/2015/06/30/game-thrones-toys).  They're going to be debuting some GoT construction sets at SDCC2015.  Here's the article:

Game of Thrones: HBO reveals awesome construction sets from McFarlane Toys

by James Hibberd • @JamesHibberd

Now you can stage your own Westeros palace intrigue with HBO’s upcoming, intricately designed Game of Thrones toy line. HBO is partnering with McFarlane Toys (as in Spawn creator Todd McFarlane) on making realistic “construction sets” and character figurines based on the hit series.

The first release is the Iron Throne Room (more photos below), which is shown with characters for King Joffrey, Tyrion Lannister, members of the Kingsguard and Lannister guards. Upcoming playsets include a Mother of Dragons set and an Attack on The Wall set. Each includes some scene-specific characters and accessories and retails from $14.99 to $49.99 (the fully stocked spread below includes the Iron Throne Room’s starter kit plus additional characters that cost extra). The figurines ($3.99 each) have articulated body parts and include characters like Tyrion, Jon Snow, Daenerys Targaryen, Grey Worm, Ghost, Rhaegal, an Unsullied, a Crow, a Wildling and a Wight.

“[HBO is] a world-class network and Game of Thrones is one of the most visually compelling shows that I’ve ever seen,” McFarlane said. “We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to create high-quality collectible construction sets based on this fan-favorite property. Both collectors and fans of this epic series can build their favorite scenes with this new product line.”

Finally, you can have your Star Wars figures team with Daenerys and Tyrion to blow up the Death Star (or invent other, far more R-rated Thrones-ian scenerios).

The toys will be revealed at Comic-Con in San Diego next week and will be released to stores this fall. Here’s some more images of the Iron Throne Room:

No word on the scale, but these look like they're probably pretty small.  This line reminds me a little bit of the LOTR Armies of Middle Earth line.

Here's a little more on the McFarlane GoT Construction sets (http://www.bleedingcool.com/2015/07/01/mcfarlane-to-launch-game-of-thrones-construction-sets-for-sdcc/).  It looks like the figures are all a 2" scale, much like what Hasbro has done with the Marvel Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers - Age of Ultron figure lines.

Allowing you to recreate your favourite scenes from the book and/or TV show. Beginning with Lannister and Stark banner packs, a Throne Room and blind item figures.

Lannister Banner Pack:
• Help show support for each House’s claim to the Iron Throne
• Starter pack for the Lannister army, which features a family banner with sigil
• Includes Lannister soldiers – one at attention, the other on guard
• Contains customisable weeds, dirt, and banner

Stark Banner Pack:
• Starter pack for the Stark army, which features a family banner with sigil
• Help show support for each House’s claim to the Iron Throne
• Includes Stark soldiers – one attacking, the other at attention
• Contains customisable weeds and dirt and banner

Throne Room Set:
• Showcases the most iconic room in the TV series
• Includes Joffrey Baratheon and a King’s Guard
• Set features the Iron Throne, two candelabras, stone backdrop, an ornate stained glass window, sconces,
buildable columns and wall
• Figures feature articulation at main joints and have bases to lock onto building set bricks

Blind Bagged Single Figures:
• Twelve buildable figure set, which includes various lead and supporting characters from the hit TV show
• Offers the ability to build various armies from different Houses and factions.
• All figures include branded environment bases
• 2” scale figures compliment other building sets
• Figures exclusive to blind bag program – not available in other building sets
• Figures have foot clamp to lock onto building set bricks and feature articulation at main joints
• Interchangeable, buildable body parts with other 2” figures

The sets definitely look good.  Although professional lighting and photography can really help that, too.  I have to wonder what the pricing will be like.  And I'm also curious to see if McFarlane has also secured the license for 6" scale figures.  Their Walking Dead figures look pretty good.

It'll be interesting to see how these go.  Funko was charging $10 for the 5POA reaction stuff... I wonder how much Funko will charge us after adding elbow/knee joints?  And how will that price be received by a collecting public that thinks $13 is too much for SA Star Wars figures. :P

Same with the not-to-scale "The Wall" display piece they are going to offer (and make no mistake, it's an action figure display and not a playset).  I wonder how much that will be.

Clearly they could give us more fr less and a scale wall is something all kids and collectors would want.  I was in the toy aisle the other day and heard a mom tell her son Winter wasn't coming this year because of stupid FunkBLOW screwing up again and how the kid cried then that all he wants is a scale wall and a scale Flea Bottom and a scale Littlefinger whorehouse because kids like that.  Oh and hallways from the red keep you can stack and make an endless red keep.

If they're hefty in price, I'm probably a pick/choose person, at best.  If they're a b to get on top of it, I'm even less likely to care.  They're cool, and about something I'm way into, but I'm buying enough designer toys these days, and that's a load on the old wallet.

Funko GoT 3.75" stuff is up for pre-order at EE!  Due June 2016 -

Game of Thrones 3.75" Wave 1 Single Figures ($9.99) (http://www.entertainmentearth.com/hitlist.asp?id=HA-807301583&spotlight=&eeshop=&collect=ACTION+FIGURES&searchfield=game%2Bof%2Bthrones%2B3%2B3%252F4)

3.75" Tyrion/Wall Playset ($29.99) (http://www.entertainmentearth.com/prodinfo.asp?number=FU7257&id=HA-807301583)

$10 each?  Not bad considering the size of the line/company.  Kind of a nice split here with a bit more than 5POA and not quite the $15 price that SA 3.75" figure lines are charging these days.  And even $30 for the playset with figure isn't all that unreasonable the way prices are these days...

This is a much more attractive price point than the Funk 6" Game of Thrones figures.  I actually boxed mine up the other day to clear some space while I work on my collection room.  The character selection is definitely interesting, as is the level of articulation.  I wonder if Funko will be able to move this line forward a bit further than the 6" figure line?

Wowsa. I am in. I expected these would be retro so I didn't pay attention to the thread. Sculpting and resemblance are great. I can accept the hinge joints since, as someone mentioned, Funko's a small company and they have to cut costs some how.

The sculpts are really shockingly well done IMO.  I'm not a 5POA guy, and that's been my main deterrent on the 5POA stuff (all over the place).  These really have me though.

BTW, might I note that The Wall is marked a "Display", not a playset...  Much like people who pine away for "playsets" in Star Wars actually want displays.  This is MUCH more what they're thinking about, comparatively speaking.  A hallway is not a playset, it's just something that amounts to a glorified stand.  This is really ideally collector-targeted stuff, and the price on the wall isn't even bad at all.  $30 is quite palatable for a nice display for Wave 1.  It'll be simple I feel sure, but it's still cool as hell.

I want that Tyrion too.  Easily it's my first purchase from the line.

That playset is so key in drawing my interest.  Probably because there have just been so few playsets of any kind that something like this ends up being a big deal.

Larger click and hover pics at  Funko (http://funko.com/collections/action-figures-1) really shows the detail. Let's hope the paint jobs are up to snuff.

This is really, really great stuff.

A collection of themed action figures, and a "playset" that is really just a display for those specific figures?!

It's like they actually took the time to figure out what modern toy collectors really wanted and gave it to them. I hope they make some money off the effort.

I had no interest in this line at all, though I love the books and the show, but now I find myself wanting to collect them just to be able to support the idea.

Only thing missing is a "stream of urine" accessory to snap onto Tyrion so he can complete his mission to the Wall.  :D

I just saw the entire first wave of figures at this store called Couch Potato.  The store totally reminds me of Suncoast back in the day.  But this place has the most Funk Pop figures I've ever seen in one place.  Anyhow, the GoT figures look cool. I don't know if I want to pay $11 per figure like they are at this store, but it's the only place I've ever seen them.  I also saw most of them listed on Amazon, so I might go that route.

I had less than a minute to look at these.  I have my daughter with me, and an impatient 3 year old will really dictate the way things go in a hurry.  So I couldn't take in the articulation in that brief window of time.

However, I did find these individually listed on Amazon, and the images on those listings give you some indication that these are a step up from Funko Reaction figures.  Just from looking at a couple of them on Amazon, they look like they've got about 7 or 8 POA at least.

I'm wondering if the elbow is a ball hinge and if there is wrist articulation.  That would sell me.  The hinged knees are fine IMO but the elbows need to have that full range I feel.

Even 45 degree angle cut elbows allow for holding a weapon with 2 hands.

The sculpts are mile from the ReAction stuff.  As good as any modern Hasbro fig it appears.  If the articulation is there at that minimum, the price is cool by me.

I'm wondering if the elbow is a ball hinge and if there is wrist articulation.

The prototypes had straight hinges, no ball joints.  As of toy fair, it was just 7 points - neck, shoulders, elbows, knees (or less in the case of the Direwolf).  I would guess final would be the same, but I still haven't seen them up close...

I think I might grab some from Entertainment Earth (http://www.entertainmentearth.com/hitlist.asp?id=HA-807301583&spotlight=&eeshop=&collect=ACTION+FIGURES&searchfield=game%2Bof%2Bthrones%2B3%2B3%252F4) now that most of them are in-stock (and count towards the  free shipping on $79 worth of in-stock offer ;)).

Jeff, my only thot on the elbows was they don't have that "u" notch like the knees do.  Looks more like a rounded pin.  Wrists I was always just wishful thinking. :/

Not sure how in or not I am at this point.  Don't need another collection but articulation aside these are nice sculpts in a much preferred scale.

Looking forward to checking them out.

Got Jon and Ghost today.  Ghost has 5 POA (neck, 4 legs) and Jon has 9 POA (ball neck, 2x shoulders, 2x elbows, 2x legs, 2x knees).  No ball joints on elbows or knees, but the ball join head is nice.  Would make for some nice easy customs if you want more Crows to guard your wall or whatever.  The samples I got are pretty nice deco wise.

It's a really nice middle of the road figure.  Good sculpt, decent articulation, good deco - Pretty decent value for just $10 when compared to a lot of other stuff out there.  I think I will eventually pick up Tormund, Sam, and Ygrette.   Maybe go for the White Walkers too, maybe not.  Def going to skip backgrounders like Styr and Rattleshirt though.   Hope they can keep it going. I look forward to seeing what they do for Wave/Series 2.

Just gonna throw it out there - if anyone sees these at Gamestop this week please help a brother out and post a UPC/Item#/SKU so I can call around to try and find these.

I was surprised and disappointed to see they have not added these to their website yet despite selling them in their stores. They are normally much better about that stuff than most retailers.

THANKS!!  :)

Gamestop finally got these up on their website this week, but the closest store with any in stock is 42 miles away from me. So I just went ahead and bought all of them as a lot on eBay for less than $10 apiece shipped, pretty pleased about that. Look forward to checking them out firsthand.  :)

Got all 9 figures today and they are terrific IMHO. Only downside was the bubbles are not well glued to the cards at all, so about 3-4 of them came right off during transit. Not a huge deal as I was pretty sure I would open these anyway, but fair warning to carded collectors.

Also kinda bugs me that I now have 3 different scales of GOT figures to display, and a pretty random assortment of character choices in all three.

Not much news out of SDCC on these toys, but I did hear they are considering either King's Landing or Mereen for the next themed wave. I think Mereen would be a lot cooler...dragons, sons of the Harpy, etc.

I hope they aren't disappointed by the first wave sales. There seems to be almost no distribution on this line whatsoever outside of a handful of Gamestops and specialty shops.

I checked one of the local Toys R Us stores near me this afternoon and saw that they now have the Funko Game of Thrones 3.75" figures.  I had been thinking about getting into this line, and I had seen them a few months back in another store.  On that occasion I had my daughter with me and she just did not have a whole lot of patience, so  I didn't have a whole lot of time to check them out.

Today I finally had the opportunity to take a good look at most of the figures in the line:  Jon Snow, the Night's King, the White Walker, the Magnar of Thenn, Ygritte, Sam and Rattleshirt.  Funko must have some great photographers or people prepping these figures for the photo shoots, because the figures I saw today at TRU were REALLY disappointing.  I had given Funko the benefit of the doubt with the ReAction line since I kind of got the concept.  Those figures reminded me of ones from the 80's, like the Battlestar Galactica line, or lines for The Black Hole or Buck Rogers.  And on figures for Alien I thought the concept translated well since that movie came out in 1979.  But this GoT line seemed like it was a step up in terms of articulation and sculpting from the ReAction line, at least based on the promo photos.  Seeing them in person and giving them a good look was the deciding factor though.  Maybe I'm being a bit critical about the product.  And I think I'm definitely being a bit more frugal about what I'm willing to spend my money on.  But I really liked Funko's 6" GoT figure line a lot more than these 3.75" figure offerings.

I recently bought The Wall playset at TRU and was really impressed overall. The Tyrion pack in figure was very well sculpted I thought. Plus it is just a great place to display all the loose figures.

To me, the line is a nice compromise between cheap 5POA and more expensive SA figures. The kind of stuff I wish SW was doing. On the ones I got the paint apps seem fine. At least comparable to most of Hasbro's stuff lately.

Maybe it's just an experiment for them? The Suicide Squad figures they are doing look very much in the same vein. I haven't heard any more about a second GoT wave recently, so maybe it's just a one and done deal.
Title: Re: A Song of Ice and Fire / Game of Thrones Figures!

I hadn't seen much of these myself and rarely stop by TRU anymore, but I saw them at a comic shop (All but a couple) and I gotta go with Nick on this...  I was a little disappointed.  The eyes and hair were sloppy (being generous) and the sculpts were  a bit softer than I thought they'd be.  I would still like a Jon Snow and Tyrion figure, but I'd happily cap it at those two and call it a day I think.

Now if they had wrist joints and ball jointed elbows, I'd probably be much more intrigued by it.

I took another look at these yesterday when I stopped by my local TRU.  A perfect example of how Funko dropped the ball is on the Night's King.  Take a look at the official product image:

But the production version was so far from this.  Take a look at the figure as it's shown in this review (https://youtu.be/o9hZfjGuCeM?t=4m18s), which is what I saw on the figure that was on the pegs at TRU.  And you're left wondering WTF?!?!  The clothing should very clearly be black, NOT light blue.  I get the whole frozen effect that you would want to add to any sort of White Walker.  But the Night's King is different.  Especially since the character was ***POSSIBLE SPOILER*** very likely once a member of the Night's Watch. ***POSSIBLE SPOILER*** This is one figure that they absolutely needed to get right, and instead this was a significant failure.

Wow.  I'd forgotten about the promo images, and I'd bought a Knight King a few days ago.  You're absolutely right that it's not even remotely close.  The actual figures are really pretty terrible looking overall - and it's not just this one.  For example, the Jon Snow I bought looks like it has two dots for eyes and a couple of lines for a mouth and facial hair... it doesn't look half as good as this:

Honestly looking at this has me wondering if I shouldn't sell the ones I bought before this goes any further.

Looking back at the promo photos, I feel like this was either a big bait and switch, or Funko just has horrendous QC on their production line.

Post by: McMetal on December 5, 2016, 04:57 PM
Yeah, my Night King definitely looks nothing like that, but my Jon Snow is actually pretty close. I think they really did poor renditions of Tormund and Ygritte though. Those were the worst of the lot IMO.

The Tyrion figure that came with the Wall playset was pretty good as well.

I don't think we'll see more of these.

The rosy cheeks on both Jon Snow and Sam were borderline embarrassing to look at.  And I say all of this because I WANTED to like this line.  But I will not buy just anything that's got Star Wars or Game of Thrones slapped on it.  All of these intellectual properties as well as the licensees need to have at least some basic level of respect for their fans.

Here's a side by side of the Snow I got vs. that promo image.  Honestly it's embarrassingly bad to the point where I'm thinking about emailing them and asking them to take these figures back.  So freaking off the mark... and it's not just the face.  The detail throughout the entire torso, cape, and body is terrible compared to what we were shown.

The first store where I saw these Funko GoT figures is going out of business.  They have all of their Funko stock on clearance for 75% off.  And even if these figures are now about $2.75 each (at that particular store), I just can't go in on this line.  All I had to do was look at that droopy faced Jon Snow and say "Yeah, I'm not doing this".

I seriously thought about it.  And I have seen the Wall playset with Tyrion.  That looks okay.  But all of the wildlings look kind of weak, and there's no getting past droopy faced Jon Snow.

And when I thought about the ongoing project of getting my collection room organized versus getting into this line?  The collection room seemed like more of a priority.

Yeah I got my best look at these at a comic store in the mall, which had most all of them but a handful of the most popular...  God, they were terrible.  I mean the heads would be good fodder, the bodies even have elements.  I'd have bought the guy with the skull mask if they had him because he'd be the only one I'd want regardless.  The others, they were just fodder to me, mostly their heads really.  :(

I wanted to like them a lot more than I was able to ultimately muster up.

Sorry, I was channeling my inner Jar Jar.

I know these are kind of ass to a lot of people, but considering they're all we have in the scale for GoT, I noticed that some of them are on sale (or clearance?) at TRU.com.  They're more a customizing want for me, but I'd been passing till now.  And the wall playset is only $20 and a Tyrion figure so that's cool.

I checked today to see if any if them qualified for their current 20% off clearance blast, but only The Wall was eligible. And oddly, only some of the figures were marked down to $6.98, others were still full price. Odd.

Yeah it's kind of all over the place but still it's something.  They don't have quite a few figures.  A shame about the line but I'm glad I got some for a much better price.  I didn't get Jon and he's really the only one I want at the moment that I wouldn't use for fodder, but maybe at some point.

It looks like McFarlane Toys is taking the plunge into the world of Ice and Fire!  Because I just got an email from BBTS that is offering McFarlane Game of Thrones figures (https://www.bigbadtoystore.com/Search?PageSize=50&SortOrder=New&Brand=2650&utm_source=retail_news&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=bigbadtoystore-retail&utm_content=).

They appear to be 6" action figures and will retail for $19.99 each.  The first wave is up for pre-order and set to ship in the Spring of 2019.  It includes:
-Jon Snow (deco looks like it's from the Battle of the Bastards)
-Night King
-Arya Stark

Great...I really needed a third line of GOT figures they will unceremoniously axe after one or two waves.  ::)

Funko couldn't sell these things when the show was at its peak popularity, this latest effort just seems like a halfassed attempt to cash in before people don't care anymore.

Tuesday Morning has the old 3.75" figures if anyone cares. I grabbed another White Walker for $5 yesterday. They also had the Wall playset for $15.

I saw the Wall playset at my local Tuesday morning store.  It was kind of tempting at $15, but I don't know if I can put it to good use for a Hoth diorama just now.

I really like my Wall Playset, but there are two knocks against it for using it as a Star Wars display:

1--The foot pegs are too large for modern SW figures. this wouldn't be as big of an issue if the ground had any kind of flat spots, but it is all smooth rolling mounds that entice unpegged figures to fall down. I didn't try any of the vintage Kenner figures, but they may fit the pegs. More importantly,

2--the playset is designed with the wooden platform at the top as an integral part. Without it you have a big weird hole in the top of the display. I have thought about coming up with something Hoth-ish to cover the hole, but the inspiration has never hit.

Tyrion is the only figure I own now, but I would like to go back and get some of the Crows and Free Folk to display on there. Pity the themed nature of the release and the paint-app issues killed the line after one wave.

That's Funko's MO sadly, half-assed unfinished lines.

I saw the new 6" McFarlane GoT figures at Target the other day. Was not terribly impressed. The final versions look pretty rough IMO.

Isn't that always the case?  We see these really impressive versions that are hand painted for shows like Toy Fair or SDCC or the retail solicitations, but the production versions look less than stellar.

These look pretty nice.  Can't tell what kind of articulation they have beyond the arms, but nice sculpting for the first round.  I'm not a big McFarlane fan because I feel like they're more statues than figures in many cases, but these would be tempting if they are on on par with Black Series figs.
