League is set-up!

So far...I just copied the same stats as last year. Open to debate
And I still say a big FU to Ichiro for a ******* HR on the last day of the year last year :-\
-
I dunno, I kind of like Ichiro :-*
I'm ok with last year's stats as they are. I don't remember much debate about them during the season so I take that as a good sign.
Your draft date/time sucks though. I'm running a five day meeting preceding the whole thing and won't have seen my house for the whole time. Any chance of bumping it to Friday or to just 9:00 CST so I can tuck my kid in without being in a huge rush? I know it's later for the east coasters but the half hour would be helpful to me.

The Shot Heard 'Round the JD World!
:)
-
Signing up now...
Just one problem - the 28th through the 1st I'll be in Florida for a wedding and won't be able to draft - any chance we could slip it a few days in either direction? I can be available any time except for March 28 through April 1st.
Sorry. :-\
-
It's fine. But it should be earlier rather than later as the season opener is on April 1st, Mets vs. Cardinals followed by a full slate April 2nd.
So we should do it March 26th or 27th then.
-
Nooo, absolutely not the 24th-28th. I am running a meeting at that time and will have precisely zero internet access.
I'm fine with earlier, but if it goes in that block between 24-28, I won't be there for the draft. :-X
-
Alright then, between Rob and Bug then we need to make it March 23rd or earlier to be fair to both of them.
We've got the regulars in with Scott, Rob, Bug, Kev, and I. But we still need at least 2-3 more teams.
I could always try to resurrect juanelopezrosario and malloc in a pinch.
-
Hey Rob does your girlfriend follow baseball too?

Hey Rob does your girlfriend follow baseball too?
Doesn't need to, I don't follow it. :P
-
Changed the date to Thursday the 22nd at 8:45PM Central
-
Hey Rob does your girlfriend follow baseball too?
She can't stand Baseball - she thinks it's the most boring game ever. (maybe second to Golf).
Scott, thanks for the time adjustment. 8)

That works much better for me, thank you very much :-*

If you guys need more players let me know? Not really familiar with baseball compared to football and basketball.

We really need to get Slothus up in this too.

We had what, 7 teams last year?
It'd be cool to have at least 8 - preferably 10 this year.
-
I'll ask chuckles.
Jay, I first played fantasy baseball two years ago, so it's not like it's that hard ::)

Silver Bullets are in.

We need at least 2 more teams. Any other ideas?

I just signed up to stake my claim on last place.

Well, I do tend to feel an obligation to have at least one Royal on my team. I'm sure that's part of my problem. I just wish I could use that excuse to explain my Fantasy Basketball woes. :P

-
I got JD's "malloc" to sign up for the league, that makes 8 teams and I guess we're good to go now.
I Am Sith wants in next season but doesn't have the time or computer access right now.
-
That's great - 8 is good. But if anyone wants in still, we can certainly go 9 or 10 too.
-
I Am Sith wants in next season but doesn't have the time or computer access right now.
Thanks again for the invite guys. I'm going to be moving in the next few months and won't have my computer at home for a good chunk of the season. I'm definitely in next season though as long as you have room.

Just a reminder that the draft is THIS THURSDAY at 8:45 PM Central (9:45 Eastern) Hopefully this occurs during American Idol

See you then.
But in the meantime, you need to eat my ass.

Is the draft clock correct, or am I making my semi-annual mistake in reading that thing? It says 2 days, 6 hours, 45 minutes to draft time. It's noon and whence last I checked, I was in the central time zone.
-

Huh. Wait a sec. The league page has the correct time of the draft, but on your team page it does seem that the countdown clock is 3 hours too soon.
I don't get it either.
-
Ok, so for a change I'm not just overlooking something obvious. yay me. The question is can we fix it/does it need fixing?
-
It may just spontaneously correct. I see the correct 9:45 PM EST time on the league page, and again on the team page right underneath the clock ticker. But the clock ticker itself is indeed 3 hours early.
Now if the clock ticker proves to be the start time, and not the time underneath it on the team page, or on the league page, our draft is gonna be ******.
I guess we'll just have to watch it closely. I have seen weird time stuff on Yahoo Fantasy sports spontaneously self correct.
-
I'd call it a case of DST2007 :-\
-
The countdown clock on the team page has been all over the place today. Currently it's about 12 hours slow.
However, the draft time of 9:45 EST has been consistent on both the league page and the team page. It's just the countdown clock that sucks.
Hopefully we'll show up at 9:15 EST and have no trouble getting in.
-
Worst case...we miss the allotted time and then move to the JD Chat Room and conduct the draft there
-
I'm just planning on showing up around 8:30 central and hopefully everything goes well. I'll be out until just about then...
-
My clock is back and properly aligned right now, about 3:50 from draft time, so hopefully it will work well. I do like Scott's alternate plan for the chat room too though, should there be a need. I also pre-ranked about 200 players, just in case.
-
If we go Chat-room route are we talking about trying to do it all tonight? Or over the next week or two like we usually do?
-
Tonight...it looks like everything is OKaleedokalee though and it should go off without a hitch
-
I'm down for that if for some reason the system fails us... but of course it would only work if all of us are here and posting...
-
Looks like all the clocks match now including the countdown clock. We're good to go I think.
-
Too bad we only play for pride...because I'm going to mop the floor with you suckas
-
Looking forward to Dressel's annual draft assessment.

No. You'll lose to somebody by 0.1 points. Not me though, not this time. Ewww.

I trust you're well under way at this point! 8)

I started analyzing things, and then I realized that I know I drafted a ridiculous team last year that I thought was going to be a slam dunk for the trophy. Half way through the year, I had only Felipe Lopez and Eric Chavez left standing that hadn't been injured for a significant stretch. It was an injury riddled disaster.
I guess it's kinda pointless to post predictions. Between all the injuries these days, and the constant pickups/drops, our teams are going to look vastly different by the end of the year.
Maybe I'll do it anyhow.
:)
-
Can we redo the draft. My Sports Illustrated baseball preview issue arrived today ::)
-
Does it say anything about Liriano? :-X
-
Does it say anything about Liriano? :-X
I heard just a couple weeks ago that Liriano had Tommy John surgery and would be out for the entire 2007 season. He should be back for 2008, but I've heard that it takes 2 years from the surgery to get back to the level you were at before the injury.
He could just turn out to be a 1/2 season flash in the pan.
But to quote the periodical that Bug refers to, on page 97 left colum it states "...Francisco Liriano, who's most likely out for the season after Tommy John surgery..."

I hope he comes back...but its almost exactly the story of Scott Erickson all over again.
Erickson was absolutely ripping apart the league as a rookie in '91, hurt his elbow and was never the same...get well Francisco

I'm actually a little bit more than disturbed at how little grief I've taken over that pick. I didn't have much time to do any research this year and I only checked a few things and one had him listed as possible this season ::) So it's a wasted 8th round pick. Not good for me, especially looking at who I could have snagged instead, but whaddya gonna do?
-
I'm not even a Twinkie fan, but as a baseball fan I just hate to see young "lights out" talent get hurt like that.
Assuming health, there's a certain upper tier of pitchers who have that kind of talent where they can just take over a game and put the opposition away. It's obviously open for debate, but I consider that group currently to be:
Johan Santana
Chris Carpenter +
Francisco Liriano +
Roy Oswalt
Carlos Zambrano
Roy Halladay +
Rich Harden +
Pedro Martinez +
Scott Kazmir +
Cole Hamels +
Ben Sheets +
Jake Peavy +
Mark Prior +
Kerry Wood +
Now everyone with the "+" either is hurt, or was significantly hurt in the past 2 seasons. Does the ability to straight up put a batter's lights out and K 200 batters a year put you at a higher likelihood to get hurt or for your arm to fall off?
Anyhow, I don't like seeing injuries at all, but when players on that list go down, it really puts a damper on things as a fan. As it is, Pedro's practically out for the year, Kerry Wood is already banged up, and Mark Prior is clinging to his status as a baseball player in the Cubs minor league affiliates.
With the season right around the corner, it's Dressel's pitching staff man crush time:

I did sneak in a one liner in the draft java window, but I have had mercy on you since the Hawaii trip NFL Canuckleheads downward spiral followed closely by the emergence of the fact that Gerald Wallace is leading me to another trophy (or a near miss). I didn't want to pile too much on in the emotional distress department.
But it is true that Matsuzaka, Harden, Kazmir, Sheets, Bonderman and Papelbon all went after the Liriano pick.
Since you're the defending champ, I'll stop there.
:)

Albert Pujols: 1/10.
Boo-yah.

Albert Pujols: 1/10.
Boo-yah.
Yep. I drafted first in my league and he was the #1 pick. I don't doubt he'll come around, I just hope it's not too long. Actually the whole Cardinals team looks like ****.
-
Okay, did I really draft this badly?! Or is my average team just off to a horrid start?
Ortiz, Tejada, Wright, Ichiro, Zambrano, Webb, Giambi and almost nothing to show for it.
Surely my team isn't this bad. :-\
-
Okay, did I really draft this badly?! Or is my average team just off to a horrid start?
Both.
I already chatted with you about this via PM, and I normally praise your squads that are typically very strong, but you had a bad draft. I think your only strength is starting pitching, and it's only as good as the best pitching teams in our league, not better.
I feel pretty confident that you're in the lower half of the league in the power numbers, and only average in speed and batting average. Your closers are pretty weak as well. Unless you make some trades or score a couple of free agent pickups that turn out to be top tier players, I don't think you can win this year.
-
Ouch - despite a mildly respectable 3rd place last year, this just goes to show that of the four major fantasy sports, Baseball is the one I know the least about as far as players and assembling a good team.
-
I've got one too many power hitting 1B's - anyone interested in Giambi or Delgado? Either could be had for a similar player at 2B, OF, or a solid closer.
-
There is no similar player at 2B.
BTW, nice Famine impression :-*
-
I mean similar value, not similar numbers. Sorry.
I was well aware of it at the time - and considering Giambi's numbers last season, I considered him an excellent value in the 12th round
-
Agreed,
Same with Kevin last year though. He was loaded with one baggers, but they weren't ever bad players.
But I still don't think there's anything of value at 2B outside of Utley, at least this early. I think Scott has Kendrick, which could be interesting. Beyond that I think you're better off looking for that OF/RP.
-
Thanks to everyone for passing on A-Rod :-*

Don't give me yet another reason to work day and night on the strategery that continues to keep you firmly affixed as my bride's maid...

If I had taken him, he'd have been in the toilet. Not really much choice there.

Ouchie.
This is why I will not take a pitcher before round 5. Fortunately for my strategery, that typically only eliminates Johan and Carpenter.
Hopefully for you, Carpenter will be back in May. It kinda sounds like they don't know what is wrong yet though. He might just as easily be down for the year.
-
It's reading a lot like Liriano's injury did for a while last year. It's also sounding strangely like David West's injury in basketball, though obviously it's even more serious for a pitcher.
I know better than to pick favorites, but Carpenter just woos me.
-
Anyone know if the Mariners are going to make up the series that was basically canceled? Not that it would help me too much, but I've only got 13 at-bats for Ichirio and a mere 1.0 IP for Putz...
-

I'm sure they'll make it up at some point. It's going to be a bitch though trying to coordinate schedules. And there's a high possibility that tomorrow's game between the Mariners and Sox (the last of the series so no chance of a doubleheader) is going to get rained/snowed/sleeted out.
-
Ichiro had been cold, so I started Matthews. Matthews' game was PPD so I tried to start Ichiro. But the game slot was already locked.
Then Ichiro goes 4/5 with 4 Runs, a HR, 2 RB, and a SB.
I know my team sucks, but I can't catch a break...
EDIT: Just saw that practically everyone on my team had their game postponed today.
Ortiz, Paul Lo Duca, David Wright, Matthews Jr., Tejada, Brian Roberts, and Tom Gordon all were supposed to play today and didn't.
Sheesh.
-
Want some worse news? I think those PPD games count towards your used games. I'm not sure, but my games remaining kept going down when the games in Cleveland were continually postponed with snow. But I think it only applies to the hitters and not pitchers. Still, I'm not really sure so hopefully I'm wrong.
But hey, if you want company that's miserable, I'm there for ya. Prior to today Pujols is hitting sub-.200 with only a single HR. A. Ramirez is out with an injury for a couple of days and Carpenter is on the DL. One of my relievers is having arm issues too. Aloha baby.
But I gotta ask: what's Ichiro doing on your bench in the first place?
-
Want some worse news? I think those PPD games count towards your used games. I'm not sure, but my games remaining kept going down when the games in Cleveland were continually postponed with snow.
Nah, they don't count. At some point the "games remaining" you speak of will be accurate. I'm sure.
But I gotta ask: what's Ichiro doing on your bench in the first place?
I believe the question should be "Why was he drafted in the first place?"
He's one of the most overrated players in fantasy. An outfielder who comes in way under the average in power numbers. Humph, try making that up with your infield.
-
I'd be happy with an overrated guy in my outfield at the moment. ;)
Glad to hear the games will re-adjust hopefully. It doesn't hurt average obviously, but totals it could.
-
Ichiro is very good for BA, R, and R. Or so he usually is. Last year he was real solid as far as fantasy value goes.
I tried to draft a few guys who could steal bases since I was weak in that last year, and I tried to get guys who could score runs and hit. Evidently I should have solely gone after .200 hitting sluggers. ::)
Either way, however bad my draft was, this goes beyond that. Guys who are usually solid are doing pretty much crap here in April. Zambrano has sucked, so has Webb. half my players have barely played. Giambi is hitting like a girl... so is Delgado and arguably Wright too (hit streak be damned).
If they don't get hot soon, I'm looking at a long long season at the bottom of the barrel.
-
I'm fast losing my patience with Zambrano... anyone want to trade for him? A big hitting OF maybe? Or another SP?
-
I love you Alex Rodriguez :-*

-
I'm fast losing my patience with Zambrano... anyone want to trade for him? A big hitting OF maybe? Or another SP?
You'll be hearing from me soon.
-
I'll be happy to talk trade - but no guarantee that I'll give up on him this early... between him and Webb being pretty bad and Mussina and Schmidt flat out sucking, I don't have any of the starting pitching that I thought I drafted.
-

I can't remember ever seeing 4 rotten consecutive starts from Zambrano since I've been conscious of his emergence of one of the best 15 pitchers in baseball.
I probably wouldn't even be able to offer you anything fair for him, I'm worried he might be trying to pitch through injury. If you want to make me an offer, I'll mull it over though.
-
****. Buehrle throws a no hitter (and almost a perfect game) with 8 Ks and I left him on the bench. Mothershitter.

Thanks for last year Alex ::)
On the bright side, Pujols average is approaching .200 now.

Are you talking about some other league? Buehrle's a free agent in the JD league.

Yes, Mikey is in a different league from us. He's ascared of us and won't play here :-*
(you mailed my stuff already, right Mikey?)
-
Yeah, I'm in a different league (for money) and figured this was just as good a spot to post my rants.
He's ascared of us and won't play here :-*
Yeah that's it (but I'm sure you know the real reason)
(you mailed my stuff already, right Mikey?)
Yeah, but I might track the package down and "misplace" it.
-
Yeah that's it (but I'm sure you know the real reason)
He's a big girly Red Sox fan anyhow. "Oh Dice-K! Dice-K!!" Or how about this one, "Cowboy Up!!"
:)
-
I'm sure you'd be singing the praise of DiceK if he bolstered your team's pathetic starting rotation (and I'm certain we'd never hear the end of it also. That is, until the Yankees lost in the playoffs).
Girly? Hardly, but then again I don't work out like you, Muscles.
And Cowboy Up was and still is ******* retarded.
-
Does yahoo allow you to set it up to completely separate RP and SP? As in, X number of slots for each, and X number of innings for each?
-
Oh good Rich Harden is starting in with his annual vaginal strain early this year. I was worried his gynecologist was getting bored.
-
Whoa brother that was one hell of a miserable night. Pettitte stunk, Thome left in the 1st after aggravating the rib injury, Oswalt coughed up his lead with 3 ER in the 7th ruining the W, Mariano gave up 4 ER and his ERA rose into the 12.00's :o , and the offense went 5/33 on top of the Thome injury.
All in all, not bad. For you guys, that is.
I'm having my doubts that Andy Pettitte belongs on my fantasy team with his defection to the AL from the NL. Always bad for the K's/9 and ERA. The Yanks have a nice little group of members in that club in recent years. Kevin Brown. The Small Unit. Jaret Wright. Carl Pavano.
-
Why aren't you following standard Pettitte advice? He always sucks in the first half of the season, doesn't he?
For your sake, my offense hasn't been stellar either of late. ;)
-
Why aren't you following standard Pettitte advice? He always sucks in the first half of the season, doesn't he?
Yeah but I figured with the Yankees he'd probably be getting some W's. Whoops. I think I only started him twice though. His worst 2 starts, first and last.
I think you're going to see him on the waiver wire tomorrow morning.
-
How's this for a stat line:
Valverde: 0.1 IP, 0 W, 0 S, 108.00 ERA, 12.00 WIP.
******* great.

Yahoo's advice sure is odd.
May 5 Carpenter will undergo arthroscopic surgery next week after an exam showed recurrent swelling, stiffness and loss of motion in his right elbow.
Advice: The team had hoped to have Carpenter back in the lineup this week, but that's obviously not going to happen. A 15-game winner last year, Carpenter has not pitched this season and will be out at least three months.
So if he hasn't pitched this season how is he 0-1 with a 7.50 era?
Yahoo's just wrong right?

Yup, Yahoo's wrong. He pitched opening night, I think, and lost. I really find Yahoo advice to be too little too late in most cases. I always get advice that guys are sitting out a game popping up mid-way through the 7th inning ::) We've just learned that Wells is sitting out with a touch of the flu... Jeez, I knew that 6.5 innings ago, thanks.

Oh yeah that's even worse in football. I love when they tell you to insert someone in your lineup and at kickoff you learn that they are on the bench.
At least in baseball if they sit out you have plenty of opportunities throughout the year to make the game up with someone from your bench when your starter has an off day.
-

I got one of those just today:
"May 8 KFFL has learned Cincinnati Reds OF Josh Hamilton is not in the lineup for the game Tuesday, May 8. Ryan Freel is starting in center field."
Thanks.
Of course, I don't have time to pull him, and then they use him as a pinch hitter in the 9th - so I use an entire game for a 0/1 effort.
Same thing happened with my catcher today - and he got a hit - which was part of one of my closers (Dempster) blowing a save, that not only cost me the save, but cost my SP Lily the win.
Just my luck.
-
Just my luck.
Yeah you're in pretty deep poo doo to start with. You don't need those kind of breaks.
-
No doubt.
I'll be happy with anything that isn't last place at this point. At least there was this encouraging tid bit today:
May 8 Zambrano's arm slot is lower than usual this season, and it could be partly responsible for his poor start, the Cubs' Web Site reports.
Recommendation: Zambrano's been working with pitching coach Larry Rothschild to correct the issue. As long as the glitch in his mechanics isn't injury related (and there's no indication that it is), we expect Zambrano to be fine going forward.
-
I just wanted to take a moment to state how uncategorically happy I am to have used the first overall pick to get the 237th ranked player to this point in the season. Loving that batting average too.

I'd like to request more DL spots be added please.
>:( ::) :-*
Sounds like a good idea for next season. 1 spot is a little rough. I think 2 or 3 would be nice for next season.
-
I think two would be suitable. But that is indeed for next year. And I don't think I'm the worst effected for this year, at least not so far. Just taking a bit of a hit in the pitching area this week is all.
I will say this: I can't believe I'm still that far up given how abysmal my hitting has been so far. Obviously the pitching has saved me, but I've barely been able to buy a win for about two weeks now. I expect to drop down to around fifth or so shortly, but I'm happier with my roster now than I was following the draft.
-
You definitely got crapped on with Carpenter going down and Pujols being not-so-super so far. Pujols will turn it around and finish with .320 + 35-40 HR and 120 RBI. You can write that down. As far as Carpenter goes, he'll be useless even if he does come back in September.
As for myself this is the point last year when I suffered about 12 injuries and permanently fell from first place. The worst part about most of them was the promise that many of the players were going to return swiftly. Never happened in most cases and kept me from dropping them and picking up studs from the waiver wire that I missed out on. Thus far I'm only dealing with a hammy tweak on Reyes, a pulled oblique on Thome, and Harden's still considerably swollen vagina. Not ideal, but barely considered a rain shower compared to the **** storm (hurricane) I suffered last year.
-
I'd be up for one more DL spot and maybe one more Bench spot. I've had to make some hard decisions regarding dropping people I don't really want to.
Big night last night as Peavy, Lincecum and Wolf all got W's. Lincecum is turning in to my new favorite player as my pitching really has turned around over the last week. 2 weeks ago I was almost last in W's, K's, ERA and WHIP.
-
I see Pearson is back to being his annual thorn in my ass again.
-
I see Pearson is back to being his annual thorn in my ass again.
All thanks to a resurgent staff. My pitching sucked for about a month there. For the last 3 weeks they have been absolutely lights out
-
Hope y'all don't mind me hovering around in third. Hitting is starting to come around and after a wee stretch with some woeful lack of wins, I picked up a few this weekend plus some saves 8)
Some dude named Pujols is even starting to hit the little white thingamabob. :-*

I'd be open to having one more bench spot, but I'd support arguments against it too. I think that's where a lot of the challenge comes from is those really hard decisions. Absolutely in favor of the one more DL spot though.
-
I'd be down with 1 or 2 more DL's, one more BN, and maybe a few less IP to avoid feeling the need to stock up on as many pitchers.
-

Someone ought to talk to Pujols then, next time he hits Scott he should hit him above the belt.
Hope y'all don't mind me hovering around in third.
Actually, I do. Do worse. Thanks.
As for me, my team hasn't hit, they haven't pitched, they haven't done **** for 2 weeks. I think I got maybe 1 or 2 wins my last 15 starts. Kazmir yesterday and 1 other sometime in the last 2 weeks.
EDIT: I looked, it was Oswalt who won a game Sat. May 12th. So actually it was more than 2 weeks :o
It'll change. I'm standing pat.
-
I'll trade a pitcher for some power. Someone make me an offer.
EDIT: I'll also take saves. :)

AP May 29, Oakland CA: Susan Slusser, of the San Francisco Chronicle, reports Oakland Athletics SP Rich Harden (
shoulder vaginal inflammation) received treatment for his shoulder vagina and made 40 throws from 90 feet Monday, May 28; Harden felt no pain in his shoulder vagina afterward. If Harden continues to progress, he could be throwing from the mound, or the front of a mound, later in the week.
-
I just wanted to give you all a heads up, that's not a glitch on your Yahoo Stat tracker, I actually did send a starting pitcher out to the mound today, and he left with a W. No need to email technical support.
-
Wow, the A's must miss Street more than me. Up 4-2 going into the 9th, give up two runs for a tie. Load the bases with none out and suddenly it's the top of the 10th. Oh, and Embree, who pitched the 9th is pitching in the 10th after giving up those two runs.
So if Street was healthy, this game is over and I get a win (Haren), a save (Street) and probably 10 K out of it with low ERA and WHIP. As it is I'll probably get the 9 K Haren pitched plus maintaining his low ERA and WHIP, but yet again, no win.
-
Oh Dressel likey that trade...
:-X

Look who's not in last place!!!!!!!!! 8)
Even if it only lasts a single day. :-[

Geez I think Lance Berkman should try to get ejected a few more times this week. WTF is wrong with him, he was just heating up...

The only person loving that ARod deal more than Snagglicious right now, is your's truly.
I could not have hoped for a better turn of events.

I tried to start up negotiations for A-Rod. I was offering up David Wright and more for A-Rod and someone else. I was open to counter offers, but never heard one.
Oh well.

I didn't even want to try to give up enough to get him. I just wanted him off of Scott's team, and wherever else he wound up was fine by me.
-
He's been in a slump for the last month...yeah this week he's been on fire but I'd rather take the huge upgrade at C and SP and play Lowell every day to me my team got better and so did John's it was a fair deal
-
If it's any consolation, I hate you both. You more though Scott, you never sent me an offer like that, always some BS assumption that the dumbass Canadian wasn't paying attention ;)

Even if I'm back in last by the end of the night - this brought a tear of joy to my eye.

Dressel, gimme back my Carpenter >:(
I thought you'd like that one.
-
Meh, my pitching isn't hurting me any, at least not right now. More than anything I'd like to have that pick in the draft back is all (well, that and Liriano ::)).
I'm feeling pretty comfortable right now with my roster. It's been a great season so far with lots and lots of movement. Moreso from 2-6, but even with 1 changing enough and not at all out of reach for many. I'd be in stellar shape if Pujols had had a better first two months. Well that and if I'd just settle on a 2B :-X
-
Meh, my pitching isn't hurting me any, at least not right now.
IMO Sabathia, Haren, Beckett and Maine are all producing much higher than expectations. If you told me that those 4 going into the season would outproduce my 4 of Oswalt, Kazmir, Harden and Hill, I'd have said, "Man you out yo damn mind?!" But that's baseball for you.
Having said that, considering Carpenter is making a fast return from the surgery and is expected to pitch the last 2 1/2 months of the season, I'm shocked he was still in the FA pool. I think that's got a good chance to prove a valuable pickup for me.
-
I know it won't last but damn this is nice to see:

Man the standings are really tight right now. 2 minutes ago I was in second place. 0.5 points out of first, then Scott Kazmir gave up 3 ER in the 2nd inning vs. Boston and I lost 4 points in the standings and dropped to 5th place.
All that in 2 minutes.
Why? 4 teams had an identical ERA of 3.80, and mine rose to a lofty 3.81 ::)
We have a virtual 5-way tie for first with 2 more teams in striking distance.
This is gonna be good :o
-
Talk about starting pitching and bad luck...last time I sent a starter out to the e-mound and he came away with the "W" in the decision was June 17th :o

Sure glad I scooped up Lincecum again, he's been on fire :)

Is it time for the annual lopsided trade between a last place Kevin and a contending Dressel already?!
A 6 win, Kazmir with decent K's and a crap ERA and WHIP...
a 1 Win, 5 Save Hennessey with a modest ERA and WHIP
And a very average Thome who can't even be plugged in at 1B...
For the second best fantasy 2B in the league and a 1B slugger who's outdone Thome in everything but BA?
Feel free to explain how this is a balanced trade...
-
Is it time for the annual lopsided trade between a last place Kevin and a contending Dressel already?!
You know Rob, I have to take great exception to that, that is not fair. Geez I even had to catch this static last year when I traded Manny Ramirez for Jake Peavy and Ben Sheets, and I got raked over the coals in that trade and finished 5th. Kev got the way better deal in our last one. Ramirez went .321 35 HR 102 RBI before getting hurt and sitting out the last 30 games, meanwhile Peavy and Sheets sucked.
You recall these as quote/unquote "lopsided trades", and in reality they have been basically even talent for talent, and fair. Check your facts, please.
And a very average Thome who can't even be plugged in at 1B...
Oh my God give me a break! Do you think you could be a little more one-sided Rob? Come on. When he wanted Thome, Kazmir and my SP/RP closer for that I was grappling over it but I but I feel like I need to take that risk at this point. Okay I know you admitted that baseball is the sport that you know the least about and that's fine, but Thome was DL'd for 25 games in April/May and that's why his numbers are "only" at 15 HR 45 RBI. I mean, do you check this stuff before you come in guns blazing? Howard missed a little time too, but AB for AB, Thome and Howard have power numbers that are roughly equivalent, but Thome is at .280 and Howard at .260, and that's with a Howard hit streak, 2 weeks ago when we first started talking trade he was at .245 or so. Kev said Damon and Lugo are being benched and dropped respectively with Ordonez being inserted in OF and Thome at DH.
A 6 win, Kazmir with decent K's and a crap ERA and WHIP...
Decent K's and a crap ERA? What?! Kazmir does not have "decent" K's he's 7th in the majors. As in, when you're looking for strikeouts, there are only 6 players in the sport that are better, none of which you were willing to trade him. And that's only if you take straight absolute K's, if you look at K's/9, he's tied with Peavy and Santana. And a 4.18 ERA ranks Kazmir 21st in the AL, not sparkling but not "crap". Kev needs a pitcher badly (or three!), Kazmir has as much upside as anyone in baseball. Look at his stats last year, I parted with Kazmir because of his inflated WHIP and Scott grabbed him and he was the best pitcher in baseball next to Johan Santana, Francisco Liriano and Brandon Webb for the next 4 months.
a 1 Win, 5 Save Hennessey with a modest ERA and WHIP
I'm putting Hennessey in there because I'm content with where I am in saves, another FYI Hennessey was installed as closer recently and that's why he has "only" five saves. With the coveted SP/RP tag to boot.
Kazmir and Thome are 2 superstars, and that's star talent for star talent despite what you say, and I'm only getting one back in Howard (who has not lived up to expectations so far I might add) and Brandon Phillips has a grand total of 1/2 of a year with star numbers under his belt and this could completely backfire on me. I'm actually taking more of a risk than Kev is, and this is clearly not one of those grossly disproportionate trades that the veto function was meant for. I would appreciate a little respect on this one.
The only thing "lopsided" here was your post and objections. The point is not to decide if you would like that trade for your team. The point is to evaluate the talent and upside based on past, present, and future performance and to see if the talent is close to being equal on the 2 sides of the trade. Clearly this trade is close.
-
I'm with Rob...that trade is absolute and utter ********
Thome is far from a superstar and Kazmir while decent is nowhere near the level of Brandon Phillips and then you have the balls to throw in Ryan Howard.
-
I'm with Rob...that trade is absolute and utter ********
Thome is far from a superstar and Kazmir while decent is nowhere near the level of Brandon Phillips and then you have the balls to throw in Ryan Howard.
Well, the numbers and analysis, and needs for both of our teams say that you're wrong. How can you refute what I wrote? Which part is wrong?
-
What is wrong is that Kevin hadn't played actively in this game since mid May...now all of a sudden when you are mired in 6th place and need offense (all but having given up on pitching) he miraculously comes in and gives you two of his best offensive players for a pitcher who has sucked ass all year, a DH and a marginal reliever who might not even keep his job. Why not edit his roster and put Brandon Phillipps in place of Dan Uggla and actively change his pitching? That would make his team better.
Come on Matt, do I need to go on? Because of **** like this there are several people here at this site that refuse to play fantasy sports any more. It has happened more than once and I don't think we even need to discuss it any further.
-
You still did nothing to show how it's not a fair trade. The stats show that it is.
Thome and Howard are equals this year at bat for at bat (Thome hitting 20 points higher, but just a tinge below Howard in per-at bat power numbers), and Kazmir's upside and high K's and a SP/RP closer for one of the two 2B's on his bench who was a FA pickup in May, certainly seems like close to a wash to me. Kazmir's got a ton of upside and Brandon Phillips has been putting up good numbers for a career total of 12 weeks. Which is why he went undrafted and then sat in free agency for a while. So let's not make him out to be the second coming of Willie Mays just yet, okay? It's a risk. Yeah I think I'm getting a slightly better deal or why would I do it? But according to Kev's needs he likes his end obviously too.
That is not a grossly disproportioned deal worthy of veto. If you think it is, you're not being fair.
I have not given up on pitching either. I will be back, I'm still in the hunt in many of the categories. Also, don't let the current standings fool you, I was in first place just 13 days ago.
And I really don't want to hear you trashing Kev's periods of attention and non-attention either Scott, Kevin beats you fairly frequently in these leagues.
-
Sorry Matt, I'm not trying to be unfair despite my first sentence jab, but I just don't think this is an even fantasy trade at all. I see another instance where Kevin's team takes a hit while yours trades 3 average players for two stellar ones.
I vote no, and it has nothing to do with you or Kevin. I'd vote against this trade if it were anyone.
Just look at the rankings alone (season, last month, last week):
Howard: 24, 49, 8
Phillips: 16, 12, 7
Thome: 170, 53, 25
Hennessey: 263, 317, 459
Kazmir: 747, 262, 64
That reeks of bull**** to me - even if that's a very generalized way of looking at it. Howard and Phillips are season long performers at the top of the league, Thome and Kazmir had nices week last week, but on the year haven't done much to merit an interest. Strikeouts for Kazmir notwithstanding, he's not a top tier guy this year, at all. Howard and Phillips both are. Two stellar players for 3 mediocre ones is what this is, and no amount of spin changes that, and it's not some anti-dressel conspiracy or anything like that.
That's just how I feel about it. I'm not lobbying anyone to agree with me, I'm withdrawing any accusations, but I'm also voting against it.
-
...Brandon Phillips has been putting up good numbers for a career total of 12 weeks. Which is why he went undrafted and then sat in free agency for a while. So let's not make him out to be the second coming of Willie Mays just yet, okay? It's a risk. ...
FWIW,
Philips was drafted in the 20th round of our draft. Very late but then I took Beckett in the 19th and Fielder in the 17th, I believe. So the point is he was drafted.
-
Talk about starting pitching and bad luck...last time I sent a starter out to the e-mound and he came away with the "W" in the decision was June 17th :o
Followed up by 5 W's in the past 4 days.
Pitching decisions are the trickiest thing in this game.
-
I had really turned my pitching around in the past 2 weeks (despite Scott's claim that I "gave up on it" LOL), earning about 12 wins :o and lowering my ERA 0.20, but I can't believe K-Rod came in today and just threw up all over the place. I haven't looked it up but that might have been the worst relief appearance of his career. On top of that I lost Chris Ray but happily picked up Bill Hall. He's a good plug and chug if someone has to sit out, he can cover any slot except C, 1B, 2B. And I think he hit about 15 HR in the last 2 months last year.
It's shaping up to be a good tight race down the stretch.
EDIT: Ohmigod that awful K-Rod relief appearance turned into a W thanks to a 9th inning Halo run after the blown save. 50 Wins. And 2 weeks ago I had a mere 37 and was declared dead by Scott.
-
You were about to trade away your best pitcher...how is that not giving up on pitching? As far as my pitching...my starters have been outstanding the last few weeks and have gotten **** on by their bullpens almost each and every time out >:(
-
You were about to trade away your best pitcher...how is that not giving up on pitching?
List of pitchers on my staff who have outperformed Kazmir:
Roy Oswalt
Rich Hill
Oliver Perez
Ted Lilly
Yovani Gallardo
I agree with you talent-wise though on Kazmir, as in pure ability, he has a ton of upside the last 2 months of the season, and I think we've seen that in his last 3 starts.
Anyhow, I'm in the hunt, and I still think I can pull off another trophy. It's gonna be tight like the NBA league.
As far as my pitching...my starters have been outstanding the last few weeks and have gotten **** on by their bullpens almost each and every time out >:(
Ew, just saw what happened with Hamels. Yup yup, he's no A-Rod, nobody can blow his save and decrease his production...
;)
-
Yeah... Gallardo... a guy I picked up, a guy who went back into a relief role, and a guy who's starting again. >:(
And my mistake of the year has got to be giving up on Roberts early on.
Dumb.

"Jul 29 Updating a previous item, the Associated Press reports Chicago Cubs SP Carlos Zambrano (right calf cramps) left the game Sunday, July 29, after 7 1/3 innings, on account of cramps."
I'll take 7.1 innings of shutout baseball with a 0.68 WHIP - but that statement is worded quite poorly.

He actually left because he was hungry. The trainers treated his condition promptly, with food.

Loving those Yahoo updates.
They were kind enough to tell me last night that Varitek was given the afternoon game off ::) But it gets better, apparently Beckett is pitching tonight, July 30th. That's really cool since the Sox aren't playing tonight, so I'm a little concerned about him wasting his arm in some beer league game somewhere >:(

**** the Texas Rangers.
Their infinite sucking has cost me again as they dump Gagne to a team that doesn't need a closer and the likely replacement is already snatched up.
Phenomenal.

I dunno, Otsuka is DL'ed and I think they're basically going with closer by committee. There's another couple places you could look for saves though.

Wanna trade, I might have a spare or two :-*

So the trade is more fair than the last one.
Tell me why I shouldn't veto the trade.
Is it any less fair of me to block the trade of the guy right behind me? I mean really, if Kevin had made an iota of effort through the season I'd probably have no justification or qualms at all. But three moves versus 48 for Scott and 52 for me? Even you've made 23 Dressel. I'll merrily concede your fewer moves mean you're smarter and draft better, but explain Kevin's lack of effort. It's not like there wasn't anything out on the waiver wire all year.
Hell, look at my hitters:
Iguchi
Braun
Byrnes
Markakis
Dye
Renteria
Victorino
Pence
All off the waiver wire.
Jeez, I grabbed Soria and Reyes off the wire as well.
So if Kevin was here for more than providing late season roster trade bait for you, tell me what it was. Hell, how about Kev comes in and explains a complete lack of effort, considering he can obviously play fantasy sports well enough to win.
-
So the trade is more fair than the last one.
Tell me why I shouldn't veto the trade.
Because it was totally fair.
That was a completely even trade talent wise, even using Rob's standard of "ranking for ranking". It totally fit each of our statistical category needs.
That was a total abuse of the system and there's no justification whatsoever for that veto. You had no right to do that.
-
Actually here's the problem: You're assuming I vetoed the trade, which I didn't. And I didn't veto the other trade you guys planned either, so in addition to the usual subjects, someone else other than me is not liking what's going on either. I asked first for justification, it died before my mind was made up.
-
Okay, well, I've made some internal roster changes instead, and I'm going to go to war with that. Given Pearson's lifetime of 2nd place finishes, the sheer probability of him winning this time around has to be close to 100%, but maybe there's something to his inability to seal the deal and win it all. I'll do my damndest to make sure he doesn't.
-
Had to get a chuckle out of Funston's comment regarding Pujols on the big board today:
Having A-Rod's '06 season -- solid #'s but less than expected
Yeah, thanks for that. Drafted #1 invokes the Elliott curse on said draftee. This is still better than the Hawaiian Curse which seems to have almost claimed Aramis Ramirez though he isn't going DL at least, but they don't know when he'll play again ::)
Thank goodness for fantasy golf.
-
Why the **** are all of Kevin's pitchers on his bench when they weren't two days ago? Oh...I see someone wants to try and at least take 3rd Place and needs to get ahead on Saves ::)
-
Geez, I'm just happy Kevin made some kind of move in the last month.
-
If this affects the outcome of 3rd place, there won't be any more leagues with both Dressel and Kevin in them at the same time.
Not here at least.
-
Why the **** are all of Kevin's pitchers on his bench when they weren't two days ago? Oh...I see someone wants to try and at least take 3rd Place and needs to get ahead on Saves ::)
LOL.
Why is it whenever Kevin makes a move, it's about me!?
Man that was funny. I actually burst out laughing when I read the 3 musketeers above thinking that was some kind of conspiracy to advance the fifth place team in the final 4 days. Actually, that was to lock Kev's WHIP in to 1.27 just to make sure you didn't get a point Scott, since you were at 1.28. Additionally, my relievers are in to try to get the ERA down past 3.92, under Scott's of 3.90. You see, in combo, that'd be a 2 point blow to Scott, who is in first.
I could give a **** about finishing in 3rd place you idiots. (Bug excluded) 3rd, 4th, 5th, it doesn't matter. Although I can see, coincidentally, in trying to deal a 2 point blow to Scott, I might pick one up in saves. But that was not the motive, rather an unintended consequence (that Scott just brought to my attention I might add).
But that was really funny at least. It's the conspiracy to alter the 3rd to 5th place portion of the standings!! :D
Furthermore guys, 2 owners having a discussion on how to deal a blow to the first place team is completely legal and we operated totally within the rules of the league. If more of you did it sooner, we wouldn't be looking at Pearson's first championship after, I dunno, 20 someodd tries.

Sorry Dressel...
http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/baseball/rules/brules-26.html
Collusion is wrong, you know it, I know it and everyone else here knows it
Well that's a very questionable move, and a gray area.
So, say we're playing basketball, and a player decides to freeze his FT% at a specific level, and by doing so the first or second place team floats above that level and loses a point, is that "collusion"?
And I have a problem with the first place team setting another player's roster how the first place team wants it, freezing it, and locking the team. That's very questionable as well.
Anyhow, congrats on the win.
-
Kevin has barely decided to do anything all year long and now he decides to freeze his WHIP to stop Scott, who's running away with the damn thing from getting another point?
Right.
Fact is that there is a documented history of questionable interactions between your teams and his. I'd like to go through an entire season of something other than Hockey without any of these little issues coming up, even if every last one of them is a coincidence and every last lopsided trade attempt is fair to you.
-
Kevin has barely decided to do anything all year long and now he decides to freeze his WHIP to stop Scott, who's running away with the damn thing from getting another point?
Right.
I never said it was his suggestion.
-

Right.
I never said it was his suggestion.
So just so we're all on the same page here, this is you insinuating that you suggested to Kevin, who's been all but absent from this league for around a month, that if he freeze his WHIP he can affect Scott's point total even though it is of no benefit whatsoever to Kevin's team?
-
Ha!
I also never said it wasn't.
And I'll leave it at that.
-
That's enough for me.
Book him Dano.

Thanks...I feel like the Boston Red Sox did a few years ago, the curse has been lifted. Now to complete the Tiger Sweep and take Football, Hockey and Hoops. :-*
