Well, maybe not my backyard per se, but he is remaking War of the Worlds in my town - and about 10 blocks from my house. I'm gonna have to try and sneak on the set with my camera and take some spy shots...

Star Wars Action Figures / My latest custom project
« on: September 22, 2004, 06:09 PM »
A while back, I saw on FFURG FForums that Savrip had decopached his toilet seat, and thought it was a really neat idea. So it got me to thinking... what could I do along the same lines?

So, I came up with this idea:

Most of the pictures came from old calenders (one from 1978!!) and a few old extra issues of SW Insider. Let me know what you think.

Have you ever been doing something around the house and needed something, but didn't have exactly what you needed, so you end up substituting something else for that purpose?

Confused yet?  :D

Let me give you an example:

Today, I was putting up some new shelves in my living room, and I was putting one right above my television. The tv is pretty big and heavy (36") so I really didn't want to move it, but I didn't want it to get covered in debris from the wall I was drilling into for the anchors. So I needed a dropcloth. Only problem is, I don't have a dropcloth. So what's a guy to do?

I went over to the window, took down one of my curtains, and placed it over the television. Drilled my holes, cleaned up the dropcloth curtain, and put it back on the window.

Anybody else ever use household items in other "creative" ways??  ;D

The Prequel Trilogy / Would you?
« on: September 20, 2004, 07:33 PM »
A friend of mine just informed me that he went to see a charity screening of Episode 2 about a month and a half before it opened nationwide. Since it was a charity screening, the tickets were $150 each. If you had a chance to see Episode 3 six weeks before anyone else, but it would cost you $150, would you?

I've already told him that if he finds out about a charity event for Episode 3 he can count me in.

Collections / Collection Photography Help
« on: September 14, 2004, 09:44 PM »
What's the best way to take photographs of objects that are behind glass? I want to take some photos of my loose figure collection, but it is stored in some small CD cabinets with glass doors, and every picture I took has some major reflections from around the room   :-\

Same thing happened when I tried to take some photos of the few posters and prints that I have framed around my home. Reflections are so bad on most that you can't even see the poster or print inside the frame  :-\

So, has anybody susuccessfully taken any photos of your stuff - or of anything for that matter - that was behind glass? Any tips and tricks you might have, or suggest, would be much appreciated. Or even any links to some good photography websites and/or forums that I can visit to try and get some help would be appreciated as well.

The Prequel Trilogy / Episode 1 - Balance of the Force?
« on: September 11, 2004, 07:34 PM »
Today I found another of the so called "Phantom Edits" of Episode 1, this one called "Balance of the Force". This version, however, doesn't really edit the film, per se. The creator (who goes by the name MagnoliaFan) actually takes the aliens in the film (the Gungans and Neimodians mostly) and makes them speak an alien language. By doing this, he gives you - the viewer - subtitles in English, detailing what has been said. The film is actually much darker this way, as the Neimodian's are revealed to be slave traders.

From the file:

Quote
The editor (known only as MagnoliaFan) has, through the use of witty dialogue (via subtitles) and skillful editing, managed to weave a new tale in which a vast amount of character and plot have been drastically changed. The once-vague reason for the ‘blockade’ of Naboo is now brutally clear as the Trade Federation is now depicted as slave traders. Atrocities which were only slightly hinted at in the Phantom Menace are now thrown at you with a terrifyingly casual approach. In addition, a majority of the ‘deleted-scenes’ have been deftly reintegrated into the film and several scenes and bits of dialogue (that fans have deemed unnecessary or plain ridiculous) have been trimmed or cut to enhance the overall feel of the story. ‘Balance of the Force’ has become what some may see as a more mature and true beginning to the Star Wars Saga.

MagnoliaFan’s masterful yet frighteningly darker vision of ‘The Phantom Menace’ may be considered to be the DEFINITIVE version of STAR WARS: Episode One.

If you happen to find this version anywhere, I would recommend it.

Customizing Tips and Tricks / Periodicals and Magazines?
« on: September 10, 2004, 01:38 AM »
Does anybody know of any good magazines or other periodicals that could be of some use to us customizers? I know of three that I usually try to get on a regular basis (since not all of them are published monthly):

Amazing Figure Modeler: This magazine (like all the others listed here) is basically about model kit building and customizing, but a lot of the techniques that are discussed can easily be applied to our hobby. Mostly concentrates on figure kits in the sci-fi and horror genres, with most articles giving details on specific kits. But there are plenty of helpful little tips that I find usefull.

Modeler's Resource: This magazine kind of looks at both figure kits as well as diorama/vehicle kits, mostly concentrating on horror and sci-fi, with a minimum of military thrown in for good measure. This magazine often has how-to columns, that show all kinds of neat tips and tricks. I.E. this month, they have an article by a guy who is scratch building a figure of The Incredible Hulk. It shows how to build an armature, and apply clay in small layers to get a muscule rich body. Very good article for anyone interested in doing any kind of "real" sculpting.

Fine Scale Modeler: This magazine is almost exclusively military vehicles. Every now and then they will feature a different kind of vehicle, and sometimes something other than vehicles (but not very often). Great source of painting tips and techniques to all of you vehicle modders out there.

These are the only magazines that I currently know of. There used to be another one called "Kit Builders" but I haven't seen a new issue of that one in a while. Anyboy know of any others, or any websites that update on a consistent basis?

Watto's Junk Yard / what's up with all the spam?
« on: August 14, 2004, 04:37 PM »
okay, i know i'm not the only person who gets all these emails for mortgages, cialis, viagra, meet singles in my area, get new software cheap, etc. etc. - but my question is what's the real purpose of it all? do the people who send this stuff out really think that people are going to find out how to get viagra from these things? do they think i'm gonna buy a new copy of windows xp from them for $15? or that they've already approved my mortgage of $200,000 - when i didn't even apply for one?

so what's the point? just to clog up email boxes around the world?
