I wonder if they'll release one of their small mailbox banks or stamp holders in that deco?  They have regualr mailboxes that are about 1:6 scale all the time but they have some holiday ones as well.  I'd love to get a mailbox bank with R2 deco!

E, that's a good point...  Oh how I'd love to have the full size one be my mailbox to my house though.  That thing kicks ass, but it's such a target for vandals, haha.

Sadly...it's soooo tempting I can see it now.

Vandal arrested on federal charges (no less) of tampering with and stealing USPS Mail.  If convicted charges can bring up to a maximum of 10 years in federal prison  :-X.

I think that's why they are only going to be installed at Post Offices, not in neigherhoods and the like (or so I've read.

One of these was put out in Columbus yesterday. It's gone now but it doesn't appear to be by theft. It seems the USPS put it out and them promptly took it back down. There's some uproar about it too, a lot of people are asking why the USPS would pay to have these done and then raise stamp prices. The post office and Lucasfilm didn't have any comments on it.

I asked about it in Chillicothe, OH on Friday and no one knew a thing about it.  I also asked if they were making stamps.  I thought I read somewhere that they were but again, no one knew a thing about it.  They are really nice there and told me if I stop back in this week, they will let me know if they can find out if one will be close by (because we all know little Chillicothe will NOT be getting one).  ;)

I see that Star Wars.com (http://www.starwars.com/collecting/news/misc/news20070322.html) has an article up saying that the special commemmorative Star Wars stamp (stamp, not stamps) will be unveiled next Wednesday.  More details at the linky, but from the sounds of this article anyways, there will just be one stamp - instead of the sheet/set that we've seen with other releases like the Marvel and DC stamps.  I guess it should make picking one (or some) up a little bit easier.

It wouldn't suprise me if it's the first stamp in a series throughout the year.  Why should anything in this hobby be easy?  ::)

Yeah, that was my initial thinking as well.  You would think they'd milk us "Star Wars folk" for more than one stamp ;).

With the first stamp officially announced (http://www.starwars.com/collecting/news/misc/news20070327.html), it looks like there are more on the way later this year as well.  Nothing official yet, but this pic (a little blurry) (http://www.theforce.net/image_popup/image_popup_global.asp?image=http://www.collectinghq.com/im/0008977.jpg) shows at least 15 stamps - most OT-based.  They do look spiffy though, from what I can see.  Hopefully they aren't too difficult to pick up.

I ended up getting the stamps when they came out for the OT Special Editions, so I'm sure I'll be picking these up too...

The Official Site (http://www.starwars.com/collecting/news/misc/news20070328.html) now has news/pics of all of the stamps (15 in total).

The one in Columbus is going to be near the post office on East Broad Street if I remember correctly. It seems a long time for this stamp sheet to come out considering they announced it today. Then there's the express mailers that are only available online. I have all those silver foil stamp sheets, first day release and other various stamp sheets for OT that came out back in the late nineties. Did anyone else pick those up? I forget what the deal was with them but they weren't US stamps. I wonder what's going to happen to these mail boxes when this is over. I think the site said they were only going to be out for a few weeks. That seems stupid to me. They should just leave them out or at least they could auction them off to collectors. I only say that because I'll bet they just repaint them blue and put them out as regular boxes.
Title: Re: 2007 USPS Star Wars Collectibles
Post by: Brian on March 28, 2007, 04:10 PM
I thought that I had heard somewhere that the R2 boxes are basically regular boxes with "decals" put over them.  I'm not sure though, as I haven't gone to see one in person.  Maybe they'll just rip the decals off when they are done with them, who knows.

As far as these stamps, I'm kind of excited for them.  I haven't ever bought any kind of "special" stamps before, so does anyone know how to do it/how difficult it is?  I'm actually hoping to pick up these and the Marvel stamps this year, but I'm not sure how you go about doing it.  Hopefully they'll be available online or something, they do look pretty nice.

Yes, the silver foil ones are the ones I was refering to in my post.  They are definitely not US stamps and I recall a relative ordering them for me as a gift.

I haven't ever bought any kind of "special" stamps before, so does anyone know how to do it/how difficult it is?

I have a few limited edition release sheets of stamps (James Dean and Marilyn Monroe) that I picked up the day they were supposed to be released.  I just went to the local post office and bought them.  Nothing too fancy.  I also recall something about a pre-order for those, but that was a long time ago.  I'm not sure that the post office still does that.

These stamps are very appealing - they look good, they're inexpensive, and there's a finite number of them to complete the collection (15).  I definitely hope to get my hands on a set.

I went back and read about their release date - it sounds like these are to be released on May 25th, the same weekend as CIV (and obviously to coincide with the 30th anniversary).  So maybe I'll luck out and find a set when I'm in the US that weekend.  If not, I'll definitely take you up on that offer.  :)

Thanks for the link to the papercraft R2. Cute!
I've never done the "first day of issue" stamp thing, but I definitely want to get at least one of those for the SW stamps. I know they mail you a special card that cancels the stamp from the official city of issue.
Have you seen the express mail boxes?  There's three of them -- but of course you have to pre-pay the postage for the box. My husband's already fuming about that. Gotta have 'em, though.
I have a feeling Pensacola won't get one of the R2 mailboxes. If they did, someone would try to steal it or destroy it.
As for the cost of doing that -- the post office will easily make back that money by selling stamps and express mail boxes that will never be used.

Are you guys voting for your favorite stamps every day, or am I the only one dorky enough to do that?

Because you can vote once per day, you know.  It may seem a little silly, but I gotta do everything I can to help out my boy Luke (http://img63.imageshack.us/img63/525/55021820cj6.jpg), 'cause I think he may be in an uphill battle against his daddy (http://img235.imageshack.us/img235/3237/11xs0.jpg).

They may be the leading vote-getters, if the most-recent results page is any indication:

I've been totally slacking on voting lately, but after seeing the most-current results (http://app.uspsjedimaster.com/main/vote/view_results.html), it's clear that my boy Luke isn't even doing well enough to be considered the Ralph Nader of this election.  He's a lost cause, so I'm throwing my support over to Yoda.

01. Yoda
02. Darth Vader
03. Leia/Artoo
04. Luke
05. Han/Chewie
06. Anakin/Obi-Wan
07. Boba
08. Stormtroopers
09. Falcon
10. Ben
11. X-Wing
12. Maul
13. Amidala
14. Threepio
15. The Emperor

I gotta say, though, even though my favorite's not gonna win, I think the results are a good indication of what the better stamps are.  The best ones near the top, the worst ones near the bottom.  Who was it that thought that the ugly-ass Palpatine stamp was a good idea?

I hope you're able to get something. I asked at a different P.O. branch Friday, and the counter lady there said she'd reserved it for herself the first day. Her son or grandson had been picked to go on some school trip and she was going to give it to him to auction off for a fundraiser. Unfortunately, I asked where the auction was going to be held and she said he went to school in Colorado. Now, how they're getting this thing from Florida to Colorado in time to auction it off May 25 (which is what she told me), I have no idea. It's all highly suspect and blows huge holes in the "we have to tear it up" theory.

I was told by two PO's up here, one being staffed by a relative of my gf's, that they have to shred them as well...  I dont' think her brother-in-law would fib on it to me.  I think some will get snuck out, but I think tearing them up is the truth on what they were TOLD to do.  :(  I wanted some of the items myself but got a big negative in my attempts.

I have heard there's one outside the Staples center not sure where exactly.  There is one in Union Station through inside the Traxx Restuant near the westside of the station.

I got my 3 souvenir sheets first thing this morning.  I'm framing one for my son's room and putting the other 2 away for when the kids get older.  The Postal Clerk told me last week that they anticipated that they would sell out faster than the Elvis stamps.

I received the two sheets I preordered last month in the mail today.  These really are nice looking stamps, and I'm starting to think about ordering one of those "uncut" sheets from USPS.com to have framed.

Boy, I'm starting to feel jilted... I ordered mine at the same time and my order hasn't even been processed yet...  Looks like it's time to start sending e-mails to the post office!

I received my pre-ordered stamps and they look awesome.  I like how they are in plastic and packed with cardboard.

The wife keeps joking about using them for some of our thank you cards.  Looks like I might havt to hide them.   ;D

If anyone is interested, the Yoda stamp was released yesterday.  The USPS.com store has the stamps (and other "1st day" commemorative stuff) available online.

Yup, picked up my sheets at our local post office.  I have to order the first-day issue one so it can go with the one I picked up at C4.  As collectible stuff goes, I really like these.  My Dad liked collecting certain stamps so that might have something to do with it, but it's one of the very few things I will  always display.

Picked me up a set the other day too.

For those displaying them do you guys spray anything to prevent them from discoloring in the future?

I haven't treated any of my stamps (I have several sheets from years past via overseas)....no problems so far but they aren't in a "stamp book" like what my Dad had.  Mine are in between two pieces of glass.  I guess I never thought about it so now I am curious if I should "preserve" them....
