We just put up a new poll on our main page asking our JD members where they think ROTS ranks now that they've (hopefully) seen the movie... So after you get the chance to scope out the latest and final SW flick, go tell us what you think of it in our JD poll! 8)
-
I voted:
#5: Not thrilled with it, but still better than TPM.
That pretty much sums up my feelings.
-
My choice was "Excellent, but there's still one better." - IMHO it still does not beat ESB - that movie was great. I definitely think it's better than ANH and ROTJ though. Would have been my #1 if they hadn't cut some things.
-
#4 for now, perhaps 3 behind ANH & ESB after a 2nd viewing.
-
Number 3 for me.
-
Option #4 , best prequel but still not as good as the originals.
-
TESB
ANH
ROTS
AOTC/ROTJ
TPM
That's my ranking. I really thought ROTS was awesome. The only thing I didn't like was the way they described Padme's death. It should have due t some complications from Anakin's force choking her. That would have made it more powerful and made a little more sense.
-
1 - TESB
2 - ANH
3 - ROTJ
4 - AOTC
5 - TPM
6 - ROTS
As movie on it's own, it could rank higher, but given it's place in the saga, it is bitterly disappointing.

4 - AOTC
5 - TPM
6 - ROTS

Everyone is certainly entitled to their own opinions, but ranking ROTS dead last out of the six is absolutely insane from where I stand. Granted I've only seen it once so far, but I'm FAR from disappointed in how it plays into the Saga.
1. ESB
2. ANH
3. ROTS
4. ROTJ
5. AOTC
6. TPM
-
1. The Revenge of the Sith
2. The Empire Strikes Back
3. Return of the Jedi
4. Attack of the Clones
5. A New Hope
6. The Phantom Menace
-
I put it this way:
TESB
ANH
ROTJ
ROTS
AOTC
TPM
-
1. ANH
2. ESB
3. ROTJ
4. AOTC/ROTS
5. TPM
-
I need to get a couple of more viewings under the belt, I believe pre Sith my ranking would have been thus:
ESB
AOTC
ROTJ
ANH
TPM
Clones might be behind ROTJ but I don't know. I know ROTS is better than AOTC to me so it comes down to taking out ESB and right now, I think it does. We'll see though...
-
I know ROTS is better than AOTC to me so it comes down to taking out ESB and right now, I think it does.
ROTS better than ESB??
Blasphemy!!
Any movie in this series taking out ESB in the #1 spot would be considered Blasphemy.
-
At present, for me...
-ANH/ESB/ROTJ are almost all 3 tied... I can't say I like one of those films more than the other, as I like all 3 for different things... Either for being the "first", or being a more in-depth story, or for having the most intense action... That's all my #1, a 3-way tie.
-ROTS... Easily the #2 slot then since I condensed #1. :) ROTS was good I think, but I agree with Dave that I don't think I'd replace any classic film with it. Call me crazy but I like Ewoks, I think the Sarlac SE battle's as good as it was pre-SE, and the space battle in ROTJ still is bigger and more "wow" to me than the one in ROTS...
-AOTC is next, and it's a good solid film IMO. I can stomach the few love dialogue moments I dislike, for the action.
-TPM is last and has the most flaws. A bad child actor, and a CGI character that should've spoken with subtitles and 3PO translating... And had his time cut down.
-
I have only seen ROTS once so far. But this is my general ranking.
1) ESB - This is still my favorite movie of all time and doubt it will ever change. The Hoth battle, Yoda training Luke on Dagobah, Han Frozen in Carbonite, Vader at his most menacing, Luke vs Vader, and then one of the best moments in movie history - Vader's parental revelation. It just does not get much better than all of that. Plus we get Lando and Boba Fett.
2) ANH - Really it should probably be #1. It's all but tied with my favorite ESB. I just put in the number 2 slot. Alec is totally convincing as Kenobi and talking about the Force. The Cantina scene is great. Han and Chewy and introducing the Millenium Falcon. The droids are fantastic (R2-D2 & C-3PO). The Death Star confrontation between Kenobi and Vader. And of course probably THE most exciting scenes in movie history - the attack on the Death Star and the explosion. You just can't really top this movie IMO. I feel kind of dirty putting it at #2.
3) ROTJ - I love the movie but there are some things that knock it down compared to the other 2. Not much though. The Ewoks I both liked and disliked at the same time. There is kind of a long dull moment in the middle of this film unlike the other 2. At least that's how I perceive the film. It might just be me? I love the Jabba scenes and the space battle above Endor. The speederbike chase is classic. Of course the confrontation between Vader and Luke and the Emperor's attempted seduction of Luke. I did enjoy the final spirits of the Jedi - Kenobi, Yoda, and Sebastian Shaw as Vader's spirit.
4) ROTS - I really enjoyed this movie last night. It's just hard for me to place it higher than any of the originals. I just love those other 3 too much. I love the FEAL of the originals. Plus, I don't think this film beats any of them regardless. Maybe it beats ROTJ? Nah! There is lots of great stuff in ROTS. I like it for what it is. That is it puts us right into ANH very well IMO. Yeah, I thought it was the best of the PT by quite a bit. I really enjoyed Palpatine's talk with Anakin at the opera. I thought that was one of the best moments of the film for me. At least last night it was. Of course we get the duel between Anakin and Kenobi which just beats everything else in the PT. Gotta like Yoda and Sidious battling it out as well. Fun stuff.
5) AOTC - I really like AOTC to be honest. So, even though it is down there in my ranking I want it clear that I like it. But there are moments that are just very cringeful. Such as the fireside chats with Anakin and Padme. Love Natalie in that black leather dress get up but man that is just some really poor dialogue. I can't believe they did not cut out that scene with Anakin riding that pot-bellied pig thing. The CGI is just terrible there. Unfortunately there is a lot of wooden acting to bring the film down. Still though I really enjoyed the beasts, battle arena, Clones fighting the Seperatists, and of course CGI Yoda busting out the lightsaber on Dooku. I actually liked the Jango Fett versus Kenobi scene on Kamino. Little Boba Fett came off poorly. But for the most part I like AOTC.
6 TPM - No big surprise here. I do like this movie more than others that rip on it. This one has the most problems however IMO. I don't care for Jake Lloyd (nothing against him personally). I just thought of all the "thousands" of kids that went out for this part they could have gotten about 500 better than him. I thought the transition from little Ani leaving his mom to all of a sudden Jinn fighting Maul in the dessert was horrible. That fight itself is way too short. Jar-Jar is just in the movie way too much. I did mind the character but good gracious he is in the movie way too much doing to many stupid things. I did not care for Nute Gunray's voice or the Neimodians voices either. It was enough for me to cringe. The Midi-chlorians thing is a joke. Boss Nass as the leader of the Gungans is odd as well.
However, I loved Darth Maul. I wish he did not get sliced in half altough it's good for Kenobi's character I suppose. I would have liked to have seen Maul take Dooku's place I suppose. But Dooku is a cool character so it's all good. The Podrace itself is nifty except for the cartoon looking Podracers themselves although Sebulba is ok. The "yippee" yells from Anakin are horrid. The best part of the movie is of course the three-way duel between Jinn, Kenobi, and Maul. I loved the "Duel of the Fates" music as well.
Overall I am pleased with the entire saga really.

I was quite curious to see everyone's feelings and rankings, now that we can "officially" rank the whole Saga, and not just part of it. After seeing ROTS yesterday, I can say it is without a doubt, far and away the best of the prequel movies, and to me fits in more with the feel of the OT than anything else we've seen thus far. As much as I liked it, for some reason...be it the characters/story or just nostalgia in general....I'm not sure I can place it ahead of the OT movies either. I liked it about as much I think, and they would all be ranked pretty close for me, but there's something about the OT that just holds a little higher with me personally. I'd probably rank them this way:
1. Empire Strikes Back - My favorite, by far.
2 (tie). A New Hope - The one that started it all, and really a nice "stand alone" movie, which it could have been at first.
2 (tie). Return of the Jedi - I know many people dislike this the most of the OT because of Ewoks, etc., but maybe it is because this is the first Star Wars movie I saw in the theatres...back when I was 6...but I've always had a special place for this one. The Jabba's Palace/Sarlacc scenes are cool, as is the final Death Star Assault and Saber battle.
3. Revenge of the Sith - Very close to ANH/ROTJ right now, and BY FAR the best of the prequels to me. I really, really enjoyed this movie. It tied up a number of things quite well, answered a lot of questions, and had all sorts of action. This 2 1/2 hour movie seemed like it was a half hour to me yesterday, just because of the non stop action and not wanting it to end. Quite a way to go out, IMO.
4. Attack of the Clones - I really, really liked this movie when I first saw it when it came out, and thought it rivaled my favorites of all time. Some of that might have been the newness, but I have cooled on it a bit since then. I still like the movie, but there are parts I almost become bored with. The clones, Arena, and saber battles are all quite well done. For some reason, I have noticed this movie getting the lowest rankings/getting ragged on the most with all the Star Wars talk lately (with fans and critics both).
5. The Phantom Menace - I don't dislike this movie as much as others have. And actually, after watching it this past weekend on Fox (first time I had seen it in a long time), I kind of have a new appreciation for it. Sure, it drags in some parts, and there is too much Jar Jar, but overall the film is pretty good, and that final Saber battle is awesome.
-
1)ESB ;)
2)ROTS ;D
3)ROTJ
4)ANH
5)AOTC
6)TPM :-\
-
I really think the emotional aspect of this is what carries ROTS for me...I really think ESB is getting to the point of almost Epic comparisons for reasons I get but I also don't think it is untouchable.
-
#1 - ANH
#2 - ESB
#3 - ROTS
#4 - ROTJ
#5 - AOTC
#6 - TPM
:P
-
1. ROTS/ ESB(it's a tie I really like both)
2. ANH
3. AOTC
4. ROTJ
5. TPM
;D
-
1. ESB
2. ANH
3. ROTJ
4. ROTS
5. AOTC
6. TPM
I would say ROTJ and ROTS are nearly a tie. I prefer ROTJ just a wee bit more.
-
Here's how my list looks now.
1. ROTJ
2. SW
3. ESB
4. ROTS
5. AOTC
6. TPM
-
#1 ANH -- the original's still my favorite
#2 ESB -- these two are tied for second, they're
ROS both dark and important to the story arc
#3 AOC -- better dialogue would've ranked this
one a little higher
#4 ROJ -- tied for fourth due to cutesy, comic
TPM characters
I was very pleased with Revenge of the Sith. My husband, however, was disappointed with it. Some of the character motivations, which seem obvious to me, could have actually been spelled out for the audience with just a line or two of dialogue. And it still left a lot of unanswered questions.
I'm looking forward to seeing it again.
-
1) Empire (Duh! ;))
1 A) ANH-the first, the original, it changed our lives; come on, what else is there to say? :)
3) Jedi- Especially after watching it a few weeks ago, the end sequence is so much more powerful after seeing Vader's fall to the Dark Side.
4) Episode III -Really, this film is in a class all by itself. Finally a prequel truly worthy of the name Star Wars! More drama, intensity, and epic feel than I ever dreamed a Star Wars film could provide. Check out my review if you get a chance:
http://blogs.starwars.com/Jedidz23StarWarsBlog/5
5) Episode II-All of the reasons Darth Broem gave work for me as well, except I wasn't all that impressed with the big arena scene at the end. The beasts were a bit lame to me, and I thought the Boga looked poor, plus I was waiting for years for a giant Jedi duel, and all they did was take batting practice with some laser bolts. Kind of lame, but we did get Aayla to look at. :P Also, Count Dooku is a great character; how can you not love Christopher Lee?!
6) Episode I-The Phantom Casting Director, I mean Menace. Again, I have to give the nod to Brian for my reasons as well. I always hated that Anakin wasn't more sad for leaving his mother. That was a collosal waste of a dramatic moment. However, Qui-Gon is one of the best characters in any of the six films, and of course, the final lightsaber duel. I did like Episodes I and II very much, but they do pale in comparison to the other four.
-
Yeah, I have to agree with Dan. There is a top 4 in the Star Wars series now and then you have the bottom 2. At least for me. It's like the OT and ROTS are in that area where it's kind of hard to pick a favorite between the four. You can, but it gets a bit tougher. With the other 2 it's easier to put them near the bottom.
-
" I say patience."
i voted it as my fav in the poll, but before i rant on the wonders of ROTS or horrors of TPM, blah, etc. I'll give it a little more time....spend some time away from the theater ( about a week) then probably wait for the dvd to be out before i declare a favorite.

Sometime between 1983 and 1999 George Lucas decided he was a comedian. It is unfortunate, because every attempt at humor fails miserably in the prequels, even in ROTS.
It is actually quite remarkable; I have seen some really bad movies that were able to make at least one joke work.
As much as I hate TPM and AOTC, I think they would have been a lot more digestable if they didn't try to be funny at all. Just stick to the characters and the story.
That being said, I liked Sith, especially the 2nd half of the film when there were moments that actually approached the OT's greatness.

1. Empire Strikes Back
2. A New Hope
3. Return of the Jedi
4. Revenge of the Sith
5. Attack of the Clones

1 ESB - a masterpiece dispite the new line changes
2 ANH - Excellent. nearly as good as ESB, just lacks a little polishing.
3 tie. ROTJ and TPM - ROTJ is a little too kid friendly with the Ewoks as is TPM with young Anakin. Jar Jar kills PTM, but that is the weakest part of an otherwise solid, but weak, story.
4 AOTC - Not bad, but in my opinion, a lot of minior story and pacing issues and a couple of missed editorial opritunities that make me cringe every time I watch it. Also a weak story, but not as solid.
5 ROTS - by far the most sloppy technically and artistically. This had a very strong, compelling story, but what was on screen only scratched the surface of it's potential. This should have been the swan song of the saga, but instead it was the most dissapointing for me.
-
1. Empire Strikes Back
1.5 Revenge of the Sith
2. AOTC
3. ANH
4. ROTJ
5. TPM
-
1. ESB
2. ROTS
3. ANH
4. ROTJ
5. AOTC
6. TPM
I could change the last two because I did like them, but AOTC has a bit more of a story developing than TPM. I also thought about moving down ROTJ because for whatever reason, the ******* ewoks get on my nerves.
-
1. ESB
2. ANH
3. ROTS / ROTJ
4. TPM
5. AOTC
I keep telling the people that it's actually AOTC that contains the worst crimes against acting, dialogue and use of CG, but no one will listen ;D
TPM wasn't that bad....no...really!
-
AOTC cleary has some terrible acting I agree. TPM just has too much foolishness in it for me with Jar-Jar, Jake Lloyd, the Naboo Pilots chatter, etc., etc.
-
I keep telling the people that it's actually AOTC that contains the worst crimes against acting, dialogue and use of CG, but no one will listen ;D

I agree 100%, but ROTS contains the worst crimes against storytelling :P ;D
-
1. ROTS
2. ROTJ
3. ESB
4. AOTC
5. TPM
6. ANH
I like them all a lot though. So its not like I hate A New Hope at all.

1. Star Wars
2. Empire
3. Jedi

6. Sith
Too much CGI in the last two.

Well, it has been a couple of months since the release of ROTS now, and Star Wars on the big screen as we know it (at least new movies) should be done with now. With the "newness" wearing off, and looking at the Saga as a whole, have your rankings changed at all? I also seem to hold the OT movies in higher regard than the prequels. Not that I dislike the prequel movies, I like each of them to some extent (TPM probably the least, but its still a nice movie)...but whether it is the nostalgia, the characters, the humor, or whatever...the OT still is the tops for me. Anyways, if I had to rank them, I suppose it would look like this (with some ties):
1. Empire Strikes Back - Has always just been my favorite to watch.
2. Return of the Jedi - Not always a favorite, but the first one I saw in the theatre..holds some nostalgia. Probably on par with A New Hope to be honest though.
3. (tie) A New Hope - I put it above ROTS just because of the love of the OT, and nostalgia. I really like this movie.
3. (tie) Revenge of the Sith - By far my favorite of the prequels, and maybe one of my favorite movies of the Saga overall. I think the characters and everything involved in the OT just appeal to me more, but this is really a favorite of mine.
4. Attack of the Clones - I'm up and down on this movie. When it first came out, I really liked it (aside from the "Sound of Music" meadow sequences). I've dulled on it more lately. I still like it, but if/when I pop in the DVD I'm likely to skip through this movie a few times.
5. The Phantom Menace - The duel at the end is one of the best of the Saga, if not the best. I also think that Darth Maul, despite his over-hype, is one of the best character concepts to come out of the PT. Although I do see some of the point of the political part of things, and seeing Anakin younger, it does get a little boring to me. As many have mentioned before, I think they could have started out with Anakin being a little bit older, maybe past the "Yippee" stage. I don't necessarily hate this movie like many others do though, its still Star Wars, but easily my least favorite of the Saga.
-
I'm still with my first list.
the rankings are pretty close in 3-5 spots though,
1. Empire
2. Star Wars
3. Sith
4. Jedi
5. Clones
6. Phantom
I think the dialogue in teh OT is much better too.
-
After a few months mine remains the same as well.
1) Empire
2) ANH
3) ROTj
4) ROTS
5) AOTC
6) TPM
Basically I have 1 and 2 vitrually the same. Then ROTJ is a bit farther down for #3. I put ROTS right behind ROTJ at almost a tie but Jedi gets my vote as a better film. Then AOTC is a bit farther down than ROTS. I bump TPM even farther down.
However, that does not mean I hate TPM. I actually like it for Darth Maul and the duel at the end and some other things along the way. AOTC I like for the most part except Anakin and Padme's scene together. I really love Yoda busting out the lightsaber at the end.
ROTS I like a lot for from the last half of the movie onward as a whole. There are some things that bug me like the Wookies not having enough screen time and the Masters going out so quickly. Other than that for the most part I like everything else especially the last 10 minutes of the film. It really tied into ANH well.
Then there are the OT that are just superior stories to the PT IMO.

Okay, I'll bite...
1. ESB
2. ANH
3. ROTS
4. ROTJ
5. AOTC
6. TPM
-
1. ESB -- was, is and will always be my favorite
2. ANH -- a very close second, will always hold a special place for me
3. ROTJ -- further down -- hate, hate, hate the Ewoks -- also felt too much time was spent messing with Jabba -- there were far more important things going on..... The best parts for me are the scenes between Luke and Vader.
4. ROTS -- a VERY close 4th behind Jedi -- in fact they are interchangable for me. Liked the 2nd half much better.
5. AOTC -- not as bad as it seemed at first -- though there were some missed opportunities. Felt like Anakin should've been a little older when he started his journey down the dark side.......
6. TPM -- Way back - wish Anakin was a little older and that there was less goofing off and more substance to the backstory.
-
1 ANH
2 ESB
3 ROTS
4 AOTC
5 ROTJ
6 TPM
Not much new to add here, except to bitch about how much I hate Jedi. It's the only movie that continues to get worse, even after two decades, with each viewing. The emphasis on childish theatrics over the personal, brooding story that ESB worked so hard to set up is utterly inexcusable. The movie's banal execution is like pure horse **** injected by a lead pipe into my brain.
I've slid AOTC up a notch just because, as bad as it can be, it benefits from the lack of any emotional attachment with the characters. It's impossible to get upset about events in a movie when you don't care about the outcome of its characters in the first place. That's a lesser offense than doing the same with ones that you do care about, like in ROTJ.
Suck it, Return of the Jedi!
-
lol, and after that bashing of ROTJ, Menace still ranks lower on your list. You have to write your take on TPM for the record.
:D
-
1 - ESB : one of the best movies ever, dark as hell and the best surprise in the whole saga
2 - ANH : 1st SW movie can't forget that new feeling
3 - ROTS : this movie is by far the best of the PT (not really a challenge though) and it's almost ex aequo with ANH; + ewan mcgregor is obi-wan kenobi
5 - ROTJ : great space battle and jedi fights, but weak on the story side (come on another death star) and ewoks should have been wookiees !
4 - AOTC : man i love the yoda duel and all the clones but what the hell happened with anakin
6 - TPM : hmm two main grudges : jarjar and anakin
-
I was just reading through some of the reviews from back when ROTS first came out, and overall how positive they were - even many people naming it their favorite. I was curious, after a couple of years, how people rank the entire Saga now? I know I'm sometimes guilty of being "hyped at the moment". That particularly happened to me when I first saw AOTC. I thought it was so great, but then less than a year after it was released, I hardly ever watched it on DVD after I first got it. Not that I dislike it, I just end up watching something else instead. Looking at it now, I still prefer the OT overall more, but I'm appreciating the PT more and more - with ROTS being my favorite of those three pretty easily. I'm not sure whether I like AOTC or TPM more. I like parts of them, but there's parts I don't like too. I have a problem seperating ROTJ and ANH as well, since I have a soft spot for ROTJ as it was the first movie (and Star Wars movie obviously) I saw in a theater. Anyways, what do you rankings look like now that we've had a bit of a "break" since the last movie?
1. The Empire Strikes Back
2 (tie). Return of the Jedi
2 (tie). A New Hope
4. Revenge of the Sith
5. Attack of the Clones
6. The Phantom Menace
-
Did I ever respond to this? Wow, maybe not.
1. ESB
2. ANH
3. ROTJ
4. ROTS
5. AOTC
6. TPM
ROTJ AND ROTS are almost interchangeable for me, I hate Ewoks that much. Really. I think I prefer the basic premise of the OT more anyway so ROTJ stays at #3 but looking back I didn't mind and actually quite enjoyed ROTS. There are some really wooden moments in it, but it's vastly superior to AOTC/TPM.
For the latter two, I recall enjoying both in the theater quite a bit. Naturally the nit-picking followed shortly thereafter, but I remember feeling the following immediately upon seeing them:
AOTC - too much angst in the romance that ate up way, way, WAY too much of the film. Editing 80% of that out of the film would make it much more watchable. I can't help but compare the development of romance between Han/Leia and Anakin/Padme. C'mon, we know it's ill fated, you don't have to bludgeon the fact home.
TPM - I liked it, but between Jake Lloyd and Jar Jar, what can you expect. I guess Lloyd wasn't a great actor at the time and there were better options, but the dialogue was painful even the first time in the theater and still is. Jar Jar is unforgiveable but it's what you Ewok lovers brought upon us, so I blame you.
There are a lot of redeeming factors in the first two prequel flicks, but they suffer from unforgiveable sins.
-
Here's my list (doesn't look like I updated two years ago)
1. ESB
2. ROTS
3. ANH
4. AOTC
5. ROTJ
6. TPM
ANH has started to come back up the list for me, namely especially with the Super Special Editions. I can't get over how awesome the Death Star Battle really is now, its almost perfect.
I also watched Sith again last week and its still a great movie IMO. The acting between Padme and Anakin is not too great and to me...that's the only downfall to me. The last 30-40 minutes is soooo awesome with all of the crap going on and the final duel between Obi and Anakin is a thing of absolute beauty.
Jedi has never been my favorite movie. Even as a kid I didn't really care for it. Mainly because I think the pacing sucks ass. Huge battle at the beginning and then a huge battle at the end with a whole lot of fluff in the middle with no real danger or peril at all for the heroes. ESB is so great because you can see all of the heroes walking in to this huge trap. Same goes for ROTS...the strings are being pulled in a way that you can't look away. ROTJ has none of that...especially after Han is rescued at the beginning act. He has no real purpose for the rest of the movie other than to crack smart ass remarks.
-
I do it like this, mainly because they fluctuate from time-to-time, and I'm wishy-washy and can't make up my mind on things:
Best two: Star Wars and Empire
Middle two: Jedi and Sith
Worst two: Clones and Menace
But if hard-pressed to rank them, I'd probably put Star Wars before Empire, Jedi before Sith, and Clones before Menace.
-
My rankings now...
1. ROTJ
2. ANH
3. ESB
4. ROTS
5. TPM
6. AOTC
-
the originals are a class unto themselves way better than the new ones. I mean they only link in charactres. if the new ones had different names for the charactres it will be hard to think of this as a ongoing saga. i don't know if it was to much time between the movies or just bad writing. the bigest waste of time was TPM with very little to show and hardly any new people to care about.
