Title: Ryan's Customs - Updated 3/15/08... Seriously.
Post by: Ryan on April 17, 2005, 06:31 PM
It's been so long since I've posted anything I felt I should :P ::)

It isn't much but this is an insert I'm working on for my SG-1 customs. I have quite a few more but I'll only post this one.

Comments and critiques are welcome. :)

Nice.  Are these designs going to be similar to the OTC type packaging?

Yeah I plan on using either SAGA or OTC bubbles. pbarny over at FFURG pointed out I forgot the name on the UPC. I thought I had put it there but I guess I forgot. ::) ;)

I'm not a Stargate SG-1 fan, but I really like this custom insert...especially all the little detail in the indicia.  ;)

Great job, SLC!

Title: Sith Lord Chaos's Customs - Updated 9/06/05, For Real
Post by: Ryan on April 27, 2005, 04:15 AM
Everyone has been posting so much here lately I wanted to join the crowd, I felt like such a tool for never posting anything. :P Unfortunatley it's nothing new, I posted this at that other site about a month and a half ago.

This is something I've really wanted to make for awhile now. I'm as big of an SG-1 as I am of Star Wars. The modular design was in part inspired by Muftak's Cloud City and Death Star, and in part by practicality, because of it's sheer size. It is in scale with the 3 3/4" figures. Since they don't make SG-1 figures, I've got to make all of them myself. The Gateroom itself is 40" deep x 27" wide x 29" tall. I've got most of the basic prefab in the Gateroom done. It is almost all ready for texture and paint then all of the details. I think the biggest challenge for this whole project is going to be building the Stargate itself. Ideally I want it to be able to spin and light up. I have a feeling this is going to take me a long time to complete, but it has been really fun so far. I'll update this thread as I go.

I should also mention that this is my first diorama that I've made. Well you know what they say, Go big or go home.  :-*

Here are some pictures of the prefab for the Gateroom. I threw Madine in ther for a better idea of the actual size. He is chillin' about 6 inches from the back wall.

I can't wait to work on it again, I've only got two weeks of school left then I'm headed home for summer break I can start working on it. I got some advice froom NiubNiub and theWOOK at C3 so hopefully I can make some progress. The gateroom itself will have a removable roof and back wall so I can access the room, both doors work. It is going to be really complicated, I plan on giving it lots of elctronics, hopefully all the lights will actually work and I plan on lighting up the computer screesn and alarms as well. And I need to put a removable light behing the gate to cast so blue light on the room. If it goes as planned this thing should be really cool, I don't want to toot my own horn, but hopefully it'll be one of the coolest out there. I doubt that for some reason though :P It is also going to have a working elevator, probably not electronic, but it should work. And from what I've seen it'll be one of a kind, I've seen a LEGO version, it was cool but not very accurate. In addtion to the Gateroom I'm going to build several more rooms.

As of right now I plan on making

And I'll probably make these as well

So yeah I got a lot of work ahead of me, hopefully you guys will stick around on these boards well after ROTS so I can share these, I don't plan on leave here until I'm the last one left :) Oh and on top of that I have to make quite a few figures to stick in this whole thing. So I've got to do that too. Eventually I hope to turn out an SG-1 photonovel as well, maybe using SG-1 but I'll probably use a different SG team so I can explore them a bit more. Meaning I'll have to make a second gate as well to stick in some offworld dioramas.  I'm never going to finish this ;) ::)

I'll update here when I make some progress, next up is to support the walls (boring) and the attach the back wall with a hinge and the top with a clamp or something similar, then texturise the room. Once it is textured I can paint and add the plexiglass windows and fix them up.

Looking forward to the custom figs, though!

You should check out some more episodes it is really a great show. You do kind of have to see it in order though or it won't make sense.

Post by: Ryan on May 6, 2005, 10:50 PM
Well after my most recent computer problems were fixed, I decided to finally redo the actual card for my upcoming SG-1 customs. I think it turned out much better than the first one I did.  :) The SG-1 logo in the upper right is going to be like the Rebel/Imperial logos on the OTC cards, depending on who is on the card that will be different, like for Col. Dave Dixon (Commander of SG-13 from the episode "Heroes") it would have an SG-13 logo, for General Hammond it will have the SGC Logo, and for Jaffa it'll have the logo for whatever Goa'uld they serve, and so on. I may change the blue/green border's color but as of Right now I kinda like it. Let me know what you think, the cardback will be done sometime. :)

Title: Sith Lord Chaos's Customs - Updated 9/06/05, For Real
Post by: Ryan on May 16, 2005, 08:10 PM
Now that I'm home for the summer ;D I have access to a camera again, almost all of these were made several weeks to a month ago and I am just now posting them. Instead of giving all of these guys their own threads, I figured I'd start my own thread for my customs, besides all the cool kids are doing it. ;) :P

Sorry, almost all of these are boring clone and Wookiee repaints, I have some reall customs in the works but they aren't done yet.

First up: Commander Gree WIP
I made him awhile ago with a bad refrence shot, i need to fix the helmet's colors and give him his holster, I couldn't find anything good.

Commander Bly
Fairly self explanitory.

One of Commander Bly's troops
This actually a fan-fic idea that is really just an AOTC clone w/ Bly's colors

(http://img126.echo.cx/img126/7015/commanderblystrooperbig4ox.jpg) (http://img126.echo.cx/img126/4679/commanderblyandtrooperbig6le.jpg)

Dirty Clone Captain
This was just my first attempt at a wash, and I needed a dirty clone so I made this.

Dead Clone
I needed a dead clone that had been killed by a lightsbaer, so here he is.

WIP Wookiees
They still need a few highlights and some accessories

Commander Rhet
Boring red Clone Commander Custom.

Clone Medic
I'm actually embarrassed to call this a custom :-[, it literally took 2 minutes. All it is is some tape and sharpie so I can still have my tank gunner. He is just a temporary fig until I make a real one, I wanted to give him an ugnaught bag but I didn't have one, so I'll have to find something else.

(http://img126.echo.cx/img126/300/clonemedicbig0br.jpg)  (http://img126.echo.cx/img126/5039/clonemedic2big6dr.jpg)

Saviorn
This is the only real custom out of the bunch, and it is actully 2 years old. ::) This was my third custom ever and it is still my favorite to this day, I thought'd I'd try and improve him a bit by giving him some CHEWIE style drybrushing. I like him a lot better now, though CHEWIE would have done a better job. :)

95% of these guys are in my first photonovel that I started work on yesterday, I got some of the principal photography done and I can get a preview shot or two if anyone is interested.

Comments and critiques (especially critiques, I would like to get better at this whole customizing thing :P) are more than welcome. :)

Post by: Darth Delicious on May 16, 2005, 08:26 PM
Wow! Very cool to see you with your own thread, SLC. Let me see, where to begin...

COMMANDER GREE

Love it. I know it's not finished yet, but what you have so far is awesome. The paint job looks spot-on, and the bandoliers are great! May I ask where they came from?

COMMANDER BLY

Lookin' good. The two shades of yellow came out great.

COMMANDER BLY TROOP

I'm a little underwhelmed by this one. The paint job is good, don't get me wrong...I just don't really like the "Army Builders" Hasbro made...they're way too skinny, especially next to the Ep. III clones.

RED TROOPER

He looks like he's been through hel! Another nice job, but I have the same reservatyions about Hasbro's product as the one above.

DEAD CLONE

Heh heh. Looks like Grievous got to this guy. Good, but I'd detail that stump a little more. You can see the white in the peg hole and it ruins the illusion.

WIP WOOKIEES

Great start, can't wait to see them finished. I like the White Wook the best so far; we'll see if he maintains that honor in his finished stage.

COMMANDER RHETT

I don't think he's boring at all, I like the pattern you gave him. My only criticism is that his paint looks a little too shiny, I'd dull it down a bit.

CLONE MEDIC

I like this a lot, an easy and fun custom. Who DOES patch the clones back up when they get torn up?  ???

SAVIORN

Great job. I swear I've seen this one before (Maybe on Custom Alliance) but I dig the new CHEWIE style weathering. No doubt, he's the drybrushing master. I'd cut off that wimpy ponytail, though, and give him Aurra Sing's topknot. It's bigger and I think would make him that much cooler.

All in all, a great group of customs, SLC! Keep 'em comin', and I can't wait to see that photonovel!

-DD

Excellent job man!  ;D
I really like that medic, very clever and I haven't seen anybody else do one, so kudos to you!  You should give him a medic bag (repainted Yarua's pouch maybe?)
The Commander Rhet looks really good as well.  I like "clean" clones so I think he turned out great.
The white wookie is stunning!  I never would have thought to make a wookie with a white paint sheme.  The silver highlights are pretty cool too.
Good drybrushing on that jedi too   :)

There's several new threads tonight that I'd love to chat it, but I am exhausted and the rest will need to wait until morning.  But I'll throw in my 2 cents on these for now -

COMMANDER GREE -

Great job.  I really want to see these guys in action, and an official figure from Hasbro.  I just don't think I can paint Clones as good as you guys do.

COMMANDER BLY -

A truly beautiful custom - great job and you really would think this was a Hasbro figure.  Wonderful job on the dirty up on him.

BLY TROOP -

Hasbro's fault for making them so skinny... otherwise, you did a good job on him.

DIRTY CAPTAIN -

Just another example of how Hasbro made this mold too skinny.  You did a great job on him though!

DEAD CLONE -

I do like it a lot.  I would add a bit of blood, and hell why not, maybe even a couple of blaster shots on him.

WOOKIEES -

The first EP3 customizing craze lives on!

COMMANDER RHET -

Is that his real name?  Rhet?  Good job on this one - he looks mean.  Really looks like something you'd see on Coruscant.

CLONE MEDIC -

Can't believe you thought of this - duh!  What a great idea!!!  I would suggest something other than a Red Cross symbol maybe... can you create your own design that is unique to Star Wars?

SAVIORN -

Awesome... I know I saw this from you earlier somewhere.  The dry brushing helps bring out the detail, and makes his robe look like an all new sculpt.  I like DD's idea of switching out the pony tail - I did that on a custom Falleen once -

Title: Re: Sith Lord Chaos's Customs - Update 5/16
Post by: Ryan on May 17, 2005, 04:26 AM
Thanks alot guys that really means a lot coming from you guys! :) ;D

COMMANDER GREE -

The straps are actually OTC Dagobah Luke's backpack strap, I cut the front stomach strap and moved that buckle to the back and glued it back there and painted it. CHEWIE I'm sure you could pull this one off, there is very little line painting and your drybrushing skill could make that camo look excellent.

COMMANDER BLY -

I just noticed that Bly has 2 stripes on the forearm guantlets so I'll have to add the other one sometime.

BLY TROOP & DIRTY CAPTAIN -

I don't like these either but I had some extras and I figured I might as well use them for something.

DEAD CLONE -

I tried to make the severed arm look like it had bone in it but I think it needs more work to make it look more realistic. The other are is just missing a strip of paint on the hand because I got some extra glue on it and when I cut the glue off with my exacto it took some of the paint off with it. It is hard to see from the picture but I dremmeled a hole in the chest and on the back that is supposed to be a saber hole, there is tons of caked blood on the back where it pooled out and dried. And on the right leg I dremmeled out a huge saber slash mark that has some blood around it. DD you are dead on, Grievous does get him :)

COMMANDER RHET -

He's shiney cause I couldn't find my dullcote. I gotta put stuff in the same place. ::) ;) Rhet: I came up with this in like 10 seconds when I was saving the file, anyone have any other name suggestions?

CLONE MEDIC -

He really is just a temporary custom until I get another tank Gunner and can make a real custom. Chewie I really like that idea, I was kind of thinking that but I went with the cross cause it was quicker. I'll try and come up with a new logo but keep it red for familiarity. And Give him some kind of kit, I was thinking an Ugnaught kit buit i didn't have one so I left him like that. Yaura's pouch... not a bad idea, and I have an extra, always a plus :)

SAVIORN -

I may swich out the pony tail, I don't have an extra one, I'll have to pick one up sometime. And CHEWIE that is still one of my favorite Falleen customs, that body is so good for smuggler/mercanary types. :)

I might try to make a GREE custom sometime.

Beautiful job on the Rhet, Bly, and Gree.  I'm working on a Gree right now, and your camo for him is truly inspirational.  Rhet looks like he could be a Shock Trooper Commander, very nice.  Bly is good and dirty like he should be, and his lines are straight.

Noice!

Maybe for your Clone Medi Custom you should make give him a snow trooper backpack(or something like it) I think it would be cooler than if he was carrying a bag.  Now can we see some of your SG-1 figures? I don't care how bad you think that are, I still want to see them, they sound awesome ;D

Thanks again for the nice words guys. :) I've got one figure to add for now but I should have more later tonight, including some WIP of my ****** SG-1 figures ::)

Zabrak Spacer/Merc/Pirate/Pilot/Bounty Hunter
Not really sure what he is other than a Zabrak. ;) I had an extra Agen Kolar head lying around and I had bought an extra Djas Puhr awhile back because I love that body, it is great for bounty hunter types. The hands are from an EP1 Sneak Preview Mace, I was using the Mace head for my SA Mace custom and I had got it all ready to fit on the new body, then I lost the damn head >:( The boots are from a POTF2 Stormie, and the rest is just a modified Djas Puhr. After CHEWIE posted his the other day I decided to make one too. :)

When I saw the moive I noticed he has a different backpack and his thight/and forearm camo is a bit lighter. I may add a removeable helmet too. but the helhet is fixed.

Dat Fisto
My brother's friend is obsessed with Kit Fisto, and he almost cried when he died so fast in ROTS ;) :P He made up this guy as his brother. He is supposed to be a Jedi as well, and the red saber is from a dark Jedi he killed. He wanted to make him, but then he changed his mind and said he wanted me to do it for him, instead and he just told me how he wanted it to look.

Yippeeee - huge update!

GREE - well done, there's a few of these floating around and yours is definitely one of the better ones - what did you use for the straps?

DAT FISTO - really looks cool with the red skin tone - funny, I was going to make a red or an orange version of him too (non-Jedi of his species).

SITH LORD - he does look pretty "Sithy."  Very good color selection... definitely a cool, unique custom that I haven't seen anything similar to.

STRIPPER - my favorite of the bunch, and I elaborated more in the challenge thread.

SBD - I need to paint mine; I can't believe I still haven't done that.  You did a great job on these, they look right out of the movie and a lot tougher than the blue paint job Hasbro gave them.

Ah, an update! Well, let's get right down to it!

COMMANDER GREE

Very nice! I have made adjustments to my Gree since the film as well; this looks very good though! Keep up informed with new pics as you update and tinker with his look.

DAT FISTO

I'm not in love with the big red head, but I like the drybrushing on the costume a lot. Maybe the red will grow on me; I guess if frogs can come in all colors, why can't other amphibious life?  :D

LYNZAIR

See, THIS is why young Sith Apprentices shouldn't play with rubber bands in Sith school. I like the scar; very dramatic. It's also good to see a SAGA Ki-Adi Mundi  figure made useful, as they're pretty lame for fodder most of the time. I like the body a lot; great paint scheme, but I would have suggested swapping the head onto another body, just so it doesn't look so much LIKE Mundi. And have we ever seen a custom of his master? I'd like to.

TOGRUTA STRIPPER

Daddy likes! Very good use of parts, and a great color combo. Nice drybrush technique. Something tells me you took EXTRA time on this one.  :P

SUPER BATTLE DROID

Mush more authentic than the Hasbro version. Thumbs up.

Can't wait to see more!

The super battle droids look much better, I might have to try that on some of mine.
Oh yeah, gotta love strippers ;) :o

Post by: Ryan on May 30, 2005, 03:17 AM
Thanks, a lot guys!  :)

DAT FISTO

When My friends little brother said he wanted him red, I thought the same thing DD, I asked him if he was sure and he said that's what he wanted. I made it right after I finished the stripper so the more I worked on it the more the skin tone grew on me. I kinda like the idea now, we come in different colors, so do Twi-Leks and Bothans and Wookiees, so why can't they? ;)

LYNZAIR

It actually isn't just a repaint but I do see why you would think so, The legs and torso (minus the skirt of course) are from a EP1 Tatooine Darth Maul. I didn't have many other parts (I usually have very little fodder :-\ :'() And I didn't want him looking like a Mundi head on a Darth Maul body, so I chose the Mundi skirt, and I gave him the scar to try and vary him a bit more. And I tried Hemble's painting technique, from his 12" Mundi, only mine is 3 3/4" of course. I wanted him to look like the dark side had drained him like it changes the guys in KOTOR, he is kinda from the KOTOR era and if I ever get to it will be in a photonovel from then. I definitely plan on makin his master (me :P), but I have to find a head that resembles me pretty good and I want to make it SA and look unique, so I have to get better at sculpting and customizing on the whole before I attempt him.

TOGRUTA STRIPPER

This was a fun one to make. I had the parts lying around forever and had no idea what to do with them, especially the Leia. When I tried to crack the torso a while back I hac completely shattered the back. I had the very top left over and the lower half was broken all the way don to the peg that holds the crotch on, so short of dremmeling it off I couldn't seperate it more if I wanted to. And when I saw that the monthly challenge was a hottie I wanted to participate but I didn't know what to do, so I looked trough My fodder and saw the pieces and though they'd be perfect. I didn't want it looking like slave Leia, or Shaak Ti in a bikini so that's why I chose the Luke arm and the color. I had to shave the Luke arm down quite a bit so it wasn't buff and it look like a girl's. And using plumber's putty I had to sculpt the middle and some of the upper part of her back. So she has no articuplation above the waist  :-\ Too much plastic surgery I guess ;) :D :-* (pun intended ;))

And speaking of Shaak Ti in a bikini.....

COMMANDER GREE

Ugghhh. I like gree but I am getting sick of fixing him. He never seems to look the same.  ;) When I saw ROTS for the 6th time tonight I looked at him closely gain and noticed the green stripe goes all the way up the helmet. It doesn't if the refrence picture I used earlier, which must have been a concept drawing. And the forearm, elbow, hand, knee, and thigh armor is definitely lighter so I'll be going back to fix that, and maybe lighten the straps too, but I kind of like the straps how they are. Oh CHEWIE btw, I think I metioned this somewhere before but the straps are a modified OTC Luke's back pack straps. So now I have to fix the camo color, fix the Helmet, add a holster, and fix the backpack. I may also give him a removeable helmet as well, I am going to learn to cast sometime this summer, as soon as I buy the stuff.

Here's the concept picture of him:

Post by: Ryan on May 30, 2005, 04:41 AM
Sorry for the double post, I figured I respond to you guys in one and then it got so long I figured I'd update in a new post.

I figured I post some WIP pictures of my SG-1 figures, because CaC, Hemble, and a few others have both been asking about them. Be nice they need sooooo much work. :-[ ;) I may just start over and just modify BBi figures, becuase my sculpts are bad, and I also want more articulation. Sorry for the crappy pictures, I've got one with the flash, the other without.

And here are the descriptions of each thing from left to right:

On the left I have 2 Zat guns, the one on the holster got squished, so I have to fix it or redo it. The other one may need a bit of work but I think it is almost good, I have to make sure it'll fit in a hand though.

Then I have a custom staff weapon that still needs some work. I have to clean up it's head a bit and I think I'm going to lengthen it a some.

Next is my O'Neill:

His head is a Potf2 Hanhead, with resculpted hair. I am looking for something that is a closer likeness to RDA but I haven't found anything yet. If I end up using thisone I'll have to sculpt the ears back on. ::)

The torso is a Potf2 Han Carbo base but then it is completely resculpted. I don't reallly like it because it looks too POTF2-ish. I am really considering using a BBi figure and resculpting the vest. My vest on that one still needs work too, it isn't very realistic looking and has a couple inaccuracies.

The arms are also a Potf2 Han Carbo. The lower half are sculpted and there are fingerless gloves and a watch sculpted on. As well as a pocket on one arm. I don't mind these too much but I think they are a tad buff as well, they could use more fabric creases, but I like the sculpting on the bottom half. But they will probably be replace for something with more articulation or I will end up giving articulation to these ones.

The legs and crotch are an OTC Dagobah Luke. One leg has an ass pocket sculpted on and I sculpted the belt. The boots obviously need to be replaced and if I do switch to a BBi upper body I may switch these out entirely as well, but I wanted somewhat of a Hasbro SW look to these customs, so they may just be modified more and kept.

Next is Teal'c torso, it is bigger than O'Neill's and has the vest open. Again I have the same complaints about it as I do with O'Neill so I'll probably redo it as well.

And Below that is the very beginings of Carter's torso. BBi doesn't make any females that I'm aware of so I may be using this one, I need to get it looking good though. I plan on using a GiJoe Bombstrike as the head.

Once I learn to cast this summer I'm going be casting all of this so I can make Multiple versions of each, as well as other SG team members. I want to try and give them all ball jointed heads as well, and as much articulation as I can with out sacrificing the sculpt. If they turn out good enough I'll make an extra set to card and maybe more to trade (big maybe). And as for the others I plan on making I may have to almost sculpt them entirely as well. I think I'm going to ask for a wax pen for Christmas, if I can get halfway decent at this :).  Because I'm not really a fan of sculpey when it comes to using this much. Well let me know what you think :)

Geez I've gone a long time without an update. :-\ And I'm afraid I don't have too much to show this time either. I am almost out of fodder I really need to get some more. I have been working on my Stargate SG-1 Playset/Diorama thing and had to fix some damage to it. I did manage to get a few blast doors done, They are kind of a pain to make, the are very tedious and take a whole lotta paint. Anyways here's my little update:

Dewback Repaint:
Pretty straight forward dewback repaint. I lost the sandtrooper for one of my 3 Dewbacks so I decided to repaint one. I am going to make a custom rider for this guy, he will be a desert scavenger type fellow, and I'll probably make some kind of hover sled for him to pull but for now all he is, is a repaint.

Nikto Smuggler
He's my entry for the monthly customizing challenge, and I commented on him more over there.

As always comments and critiques are more than welcome.    :P

Nice job on that Dewback 8)
Are you going to give him pupils?  If a scavenger guy is the owner, maybe you can add a little "battle-damage" type details to him (scars, blaster wounds, etc).  I think having 2 bad-ass Jawas on top of the dewback would be cool (they could pick on those pansy Ronto-riding Jawas :P)
Title: Re: Sith Lord Chaos's Customs - Updated 6/29/05
Post by: Ryan on June 29, 2005, 06:05 PM
Thanks Greg, I wasn't planning on giving him any pupils because the Hasbro one didn't have any and I haven't seen any dewbacks with pupils, so until I do I was just going to keep it like this.

Post by: Gregorbian on June 29, 2005, 10:46 PM
Oh ok, I wasn't sure if they had pupils or not.  Now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure you're right; no pupils for dewbacks. ;)

Unfortunately no. :-\ I have been fairly busy this last month, and being broke kind of puts a damper on things. I am going to try and texture the walls of my playset today and get some pictures up sometime this week, I didn't realize how long something this big takes, I guess it doest help that I get distracted by the littlest.... wait what was I talking about?

I have a little update, no real customs I've just been working on some paintshop effects in the event I  ever do a photonovel, which is a destinct possiblity.  ;) I hope to have a real update tomarrow, or sometime early this week. :)

Sith Lord Lynzair

Jedi Knight Saviorn

Dat Fisto

My entry for the Custom Challenge is a former War droid, turned Salvage droid.

He is a former war droid turned salvage droid. Instead of scraping it this obsolete war, the droid's owner converted him into a salvage droid. His right arm was replaced with with a rusty old plasma cutter and his legs were chopped of at the knees and he was given legs with large electro-magnetic feet so he could grip the hulls of destroyed starships and other space junk, though the droid is usaully stationed on planet because his owner was too cheap to fit him with any type of space propulsion device.

I hope to have a real update soon.

Thanks guys I'm glad you liked the effects. I'm still not 100% satisfied but practice makes perfect. :)

And now the real update I promised:

First up

SA Mace Windu:

Every Mace since Episode 1 has sucked, everyone knows that, I gave up waiting on Hasblow to amke a good one and decided to make my own. The body is a ROTS Agen Kolar, which other than Red leader Obi-Wan is as close to an SA Jedi as we have. The torso was resculpted so that the robes match Mace's since Agen's and Mace's are slighty different. The head is a POTF2 SP Mace, the mail away one. I think it is one of the better Mace heads and I also happened to have it handy. The neck post was majorly modified so that the head retains articulation. Then it was repainted to match Mace's robe color and neckline. Enough talk here he is:

Next up we have...

SA Obi-Wan Kenobi in Clone Armor

I've been wanting one of these since I first saw the cartoon. The battle pack version was Ok for what it was. It was kind of cool to have a plain Obi-Wan and an Obi-Wan in Clone Armor, but the armor always falls off and it isn't accurate enough. This is a ROTS SA Clone body and belt with the Battle pack neck, head, cape, and helmet. The armor was cut out of the cape, I cut both the chestplate and the belt off so that the better looking armor would show through. The belt was cut off and the inside was shaved out. It was then flipped and (unfortunately) glued into place. I gave it some Drybrushing on the cape and a little weathering on the armor. The right hand is from a #6 Quickdraw clone so he can do all the pointing and ordering a General needs to do. (Thanks for the idea Kevin  :))

It feels good to finally have a real update again let me know what you guys think.

They both look fantastic.  I wouldn't change anything about the Obi-Wan, but through no fault of your own, the shoulders on the Mace look a little "coat hangar-ish", maybe not as muscular as he should be.  Still and all, if put on a card, that'd be the best Mace we ever got.  Nice job.

Yeah I noticed the same thing on Mace I would have used the Red Leader Obi-Wan but I started this custom on 5/17 (I only remember that because it was the night before ROTS :P) I lost the head and wasn't able to finish it until today, now that I finally found it. ::)

I can see the pics just fine right now.  Hope you can see them soon Greg because these are awesome.

Mace Windu - My version is pretty similar, but yours looks better to me SLC.  I love how the Agen Kolar body seems to be such a great fit for Windu.  And the head selection is good, it gives him a neutral expression.  Well done - you get an A+ on this one, along with some extra credit.

Obi Wan - You nailed it on the head on this one too.  Great job cutting out the armor from the robes, it looks so natural.  And excellent weathering too!

Nice seeing an update from you too!  You made my day.   :)

OK, I can see them now  ;D
Great Mace Windu!  I should really try that out.  At first, I didn't really mind the gorilla-armed ROTS Mace (especially after I put a SG cloak on him), but after putting him next to a ROTS Pilot Obi-Wan, man, he looked like crap.  Now I need to find Agen Kolar (he was pegwarming forever, but now that I need him, I bet you he's not on the pegs anymore  ::))

If you didn't say that you had sculpted Mace's shirt, I would never have known.  Great job on that!  it looks perfect!

I like your Obi-Wan as well, my only complaint is with the cloak.  Hasbro made it too bulky, It think a softgoods cloak would look more in scale.  Still, the drybrushing you did on the cloak makes it look a million times better than hasbro's version.  8)

Thanks a lot guys!!

I made sure to buy a few extra Agen Kolar's Pilot Obi-an is pegwarming near me so I have a good source of Jedi Fodder for now. I have never worked with Soft goods so I went with this cape. I think if I glued it down to the shoulders it would look less bulky, but I'd have to trip some off the bottom and my x-acto was getting dull and have trouble cutting the rubbery cape towards the end. I'll probably keep it as is, but thanks for the suggestion.

Just for kicks here's a comparison shot of Agen Kolar's Robes, it is basically the same I just flipped it around.

CHEWIE, I'm really glad that you like them.  :)

I commented on this somewhere else, but I'll say it again.

I LOVE the droid.  It's fantastic.  The Sith and Jedi are great, too.

I like the Mace, but I don't love it.  The shoulders look just a tad goofy, but that's probably just the source material.

Anyway, great work all around!

The Agen Kolar is the Hasbro version... ;) I just put it up for comparrison to the chest on my Mace.

Thanks Lance, I do tend to agree on the Mace. I think he looks fine with the Obi-Wan Red leader cloak on, it makes the cloak look more scale but the shoulders are a bit goofy, If I had started this later, when Red leader Obi-Wan was out, I'd have used that body.

And Jeff thankl for grouping these together. :)

None yet but I have made some progress of my Teal'c headsculpt and I've got a WIP grenade damage guy. I still have yet to finish any yet. :-X Stupid ADD.

I am without a camera for awhile so please forgive the crappy scans. But After seeing Talon, CHEWIE, and Dave's recent CW Obi-Wans I decided to get on the bandwagon.  :)

Well the belt is actually sculpted, so I guess it wasn't too easy with my sub-par sculpting skills. The robe is Agen Kolar's, very heavily modified of course. The neck chain is a piece of the zip-line from the Clone Commander, then I added a bit of a drybrush to it.

What the hell, I'll throw up two more tonight. :) I was going to save these for a few days so it would actually look like I was updating more regularly, But I decided to throw them up now. I actually made these a week or two ago but I kept forgeting to post them. I think these guys look better in person, but anyways, these guys are supposed to be some kind of Local militia/terrorist type. I'm not really sure which, but they supposed to be from a really arid desert type planet, hence the orange. The Luke head might just be a temporary head until I find something better, the hair is supposed to be black with that "iced" look.

I was going to use a different BBi head, but I think it is the same one you used on Briss, and I wanted to cast it first, since it is a good basic army building head. I think I'll definitely have to replace it with something better soon.

Great job on the Obi-Wan (he definitely looks beat up).  Everybody has been making such great versions of this character, I might have to try it too!  I like the way that you trimmed the cloak - it looks very natural.  The only thing that I would do is add piece of cheap chain connecting both sides of the cloak (I bought a cheap chain from a 25 cent machine and it lasts for a while).

The terrorists turned out well too.  Nice use of the Navy Seal Breacher head.   Is that a Ki-Adi-Mundi body?  It works well, they definitely look like covert-ops or guerilla fighters.

Thanks Greg. Those are indeed Ki-Adi's body. I really think that body is great for non Jedi customs as well, the robes are basic enough that they really could be anything. About Obi-Wan's chain, if I had thought ahead I probably would have done that, but I actually like it the way it is. The scanner squished the cape and the color didn't come out right on the softgood necktie thing I have on there. I think it looks better in person.

And now for another update, here's my entry for the Blue Harvest CCC. I explained a little more about him in that thread.

I already replied in that thread, but thought I should reply here too.   ;)

This a great and unique custom figure.  He looks very evil and has a Middle Ages look to him, and fits in well with the Blue Harverst theme.  I'd say this is one of your better customs.  The little accessory pack on his belt is a nice touch, and the dry brushing on him is perfectly done.  Great idea, and an excellent use for the Nemoidian body.  I might need to pick up a few more of them when they go on clearance.

Great job SLC!

Love the new custom!  TERRIFIC paint scheme.  Man, I gotta track down some of these dollar store figures.  I've never seen these, but they look like great custom fodder.

I like the militia guys, too.  My only complaint is the Luke head and, no, it's not the hair, but it's the young, goofy expression that he has.  Doesn't feel right for a military/mercenary guy, especially when compared with his black-clad partner.

Other than that, great job!  Would you consider adding some kind of insignia, though, to the milita guys to give them a more uniform-like appearance?

Hi Ryan

Great looking custom's mate very impressed with Obi-Wan in clone armour he has that battle weary look about him, I'm in the process of doing one has well hopefully I'll have pics up on the weekend.

And I really like your Death Knight figure looks very scary indeed and I like the use of the different helmet and armour and the weathering is spot on.

Well I got 4 done for this month's CCC. A new record for me. :) I was hoping to get a fifth done but I ran out of time.

First up: Niemoidian Rebel X-Wing Pilot, Devir Floto

He is just a simple headswap really with a repainted head and helmet.

And next I've got a yet un-named Sakian Rebel General:

Really easy 15 minute custom, I had an extra Djas head and hands that I'd been wanting to use for while, as well as a Madine body, so I just threw this together. He maintains full articulation, all of the customs this update do actually. :)

And next an un-named Endor Rebel Communications Officer:

A rather boring figure. I just cobbled himtogether quickly cause I couldn't find a real head, and wanted to get this stupid Obi-Wan head out of my fodder bin, so he became a comm officer.

And last but not least, and my personal favorite of the group a Rebel Sandtrooper:

He's got full articulation still, including the neck. The Bbi head I used had a short neckpeg and no neck whatsoever, so I stuck a soft plastic ring thing in the neck socket  to act as a neck, and drilled a hole through it, the head now fits snugly in there and still moves. The goggles are POTF2 Gardinian goggles dremmeled off and attached to the hat, with little bits of cardboard type stuff as the straps. The Holster is a leftover Djas Puhr holster cut, modified, and flipped. The strap there is sculpey. I added an extra canteen to his backpack so he can stay hydrated. He is supposed to be wearing a thermal bodygolve under the clothing, like Imperial Sandtroopers wear, hence the face mask. I gave him the goggles and the face mask to protect him during sandstorms. And attempeted to give him some SW style desert camoflague.

Well let me know what you guys think! :)

-the sakian general is great, i actually have that head and figure ;aying around and may just steal that idea, if you don't mind!

- that potf rebel torso really went well with the saga rebel legs, nice parts swap!

-the rebel sand trooper is just awsome. the camoflage is great and the work you did with the head and neck pices really woked well, it looks very natural, like 1 piece. the leg holster looks a bit bulky when the weapon is in it, it may have looked better on the thigh, but is still awsome. i really like this figure, he alomost looks too bad-a$$ to work for the alliance, mabey he should strike out on his own freelance!

great update with some great figures!

Great update Ryan!  I like that Sakian rebel general, he would look perfect next to Madine.
My favorite is probably the Neimoidian Rebel Pilot - it's such a cool idea that Neimoidians would turn into rebels once the Empire cements its rule over the galaxy.  Did you repaint the head?  What is that helmet?

The Endor Communications Rebel looks cool, nice drybrushing!
That Rebel Sandtrooper is very well done and a great concept!  It's definitely one of those "Why didn't I think of that!?!" concepts  ;)  The Garindan goggles are a great touch as well.  Clever.

Great Work!

I really love the Rebel Sandy Concept.

The Color Palet you chose is perfect for a Desert Warrior.

The Goggles meld very well w/ the Helmet. It must have been a pain to seperate them from Garidans head.

You've inspired me to give this Concept a Try for myself.

Great work I can't wait to see more,

2 1/2 months since an update? I've got to start finishing things I start on instead of starting them, getting halway done, and then starting on something else. I have 12-15 WIPs over the last 2 months and only 1 new figure that I finished about a week ago.

thanks for the nice words on the last update BTW. I think I'm going to make another Sandtrooper figure, it was a pain to seperate those goggles but it was a really fun figure to make.

Gran Crime Boss/Thug/Gangster type

Not much to look at, he is just kind of a background filler type. He also is nameless at the moment.

Body: TSC Bib Fortuna
Arms, Feet, Neck, and Head: ROTS Ask Aak

Thanks a lot guys. I'd been looking for something to do with the extra Bib bodies I had. I found a few Ask Aaks in those TRU two-packs and it seemed like a natural fit. Smarty thanks for the comparison to CHEWIE and hemble, I certainly don't classify myself up with them, but I've been trying out some teniques they use and they see to be working pretty good. I've got a lot of work to do before I'll ever consider myself even half as good as either of them.

I finally finished 2 of the WIPs that have been sitting in the fodder drawer for about 3 months now. They really were pretty basic, just headswaps really. Sorry for the ****** picture I was in a rush.

Lieutenant Vash Rey’tal and Tael’ros Sygti

On the left is Lieutenant Vash Rey’tal a Twi'lek X-Wing pilot and on the right is Tael’ros Sygti a Kel Dors X-Wing pilot. Rey'tal is just a modified TSC Bib Fortuna head, I cut off some of the fat parts, an extra chin, and some lumps on his forehead. Then it was repainted. Sygti is a SAGA Plo Koon head and hands. The mask has been repainted black, white, and orange.

Hopefully I'll have a few more in the next couple of days. In the mean time comments and critiques are always welcome. :)

I really like what you did with Vash. He doesn't look like Bib Fortuna at all. He doesn't even look evil anymore. :)

The Kel Dor, though, is my favorite! Major props on the hands. At first glance I thought you had used humanoid hands and I was a little put off, then I realized they WERE Plo hands :P. A very, very nice job here. I like how you incorporated the mask with the flightsuit, too. It's a nice touch that distinguishes him from Plo. Did you shorten the spikes coming off the mask? They're just the right length here, but for some reason I remember them being longer on the stock head...

Congrats on a fine update!

Thanks guys. The pilots really weren't that difficult, but I do kind of like them myself.

I still have around 15-20 WIPS that are lying around on my desk, and are anywhere from 10% to 90% finished. I did finish one fairly simple custom last night though. I normally avoid clone Customs I think I've done maybe 3 and those were back in April of last year, but after Hasbro's half-assed attempt at Cody, I had to tweak it a bit.

I'm alright without ball jointed shoulders for now. The way his shoulder pads are it would be difficult for them to even work right without looking too bulky. All he is is the TSC Cody Body, Arms, head, helmet, and upper left leg. The right leg and lower part of the left leg are from an Utapau clone. I corrected the paint on the helmet so the little antennae are black and the little amera ball has color on it now.

I've got finals this week so I boubt I'll have much more finished for at least another week, but hopefully I can finish some of those WIPs off soon.

Excellent job, Ryan.

It is so frustrating when Hasbro is so close to a perfect figure, then mucks it up with corner-cutting.  WHY doesn't Cody have #41 legs??!!?

And I like the Gran from the previous page quite a bit!

Well done, as always!

Hey Ryan,

Nice updates man, way to go...  The two alien rebel pilots are nice parts reworking, and I especially liked the way you mixed up the Keldor's mask so it's not identical to Plo's...  That seems changed up anyway in some way to me.  The little things like that are the best way to make characters like that fit in better without being too obviously Plo's head...  The Twi'Lek has good painting on it too, very smooth and it really showed the head of Bib isn't as bad as Hasbro made it out to be, they just paint like ****.

Cody's just a great update man...  Nice paint detailing...  It seems you got all the little details Hasbro missed.  I'm sorta planning on an ankle transplant more than legs overall being replaced.  I don't really feel like repainting kneepads and things is my bitch on it...  I'm probably going to stick with ankle articulating my extra when he gets here.  I'm still looking at my current Cody waiting for a review...  Ugh.   ::)

Ryan, great job tweaking Cody.  His legs were one of my major gripes with Hasbro's figure and you did a great job correcting them.

Your pilots look great too. I really like how the Bib Fortuna head looks on that body.  The removal of some of the detail off of the head really help to seperate this figure and make it so much more than just Bib Fortuna in a x-wing uniform.

Those Rebel Pilots are cool, I like the use of the Plo Koon hands painted black for the gloves.  I probably would have forgotten about that.  Nice touch.

I finally got off my ass and updated again, I'm getting tired so I'll just post these two new ones for now. I took a lot of photo reshoots of some older figures so I'll post them at some point.

First up is Sergeant Rax Chan, a Rebel X-Wing Mechanic. He is more than a little inspired by Chief Tyrel form Battlestar Galactica. That is supposed to be a welding mask he has on.

The mechanic is perfect, at first when I saw him I thought "wait hte naboo flight crewman isn't out yet" that color matches soo good. What figure did you use. And if its ok with you I think I'll borrow this design.

The Comander is a great neutral standing Background guy. I could see him on Home One during the briefing on the attack of DS2. :D

The commander is also very well done.  These guys would look great in a diorama.

The commander looks good as well.

It's hard to pick a favorite out of the group shot. Though I seem to remember seeing the Nemiodian before. Have you posted him elsewhere?

Thanks a lot Ennis. The Neimoidian, as well as the Sakian General were both two for my entries for the December Customizing Challenge. I've still got about a dozen more pilots that are all WIPs, I'm glad someone wants to see them. :)

Thanks a lot Brent. I actually do like the head, it seems to be one of the better XD heads since it is a bit more neutral.

And as for the diorama, I'm, getting there. Lots of my own projects are going to have to be put on hold for the UGP. So it may be a ways off yet.

Smarty, the figure is an Operation Market Garden 101st Airborne Trooper, with some Commander Bacara boots, it was all I had handy at the time. I just filled in all the little holes with sculpey and repainted it. The helmet is a Saga Captain Typho helmet.

Great stuff Ryan! I love the detail you put into your work like the ankle holster on the rebel soldier. Also can't wait to see some more of the Stargate stuff.

Glad you liked them Anton. And truth be told I'd like to see more Stargate stuff myself. I've hardlt worked on it recently because it is so big it is a pain to move, and I still am trying to find the right fodder for some of the figures. You have inspired me to at least start work on the diorama again, I'll try and get it painted here in the next few days.

Legs: 21st Century Operation Market Garden 101st Aitborne Trooper
Arms: 21st Century Operation Market Garden 101st Aitborne Trooper (It might not have been from the same figure as the rest though, I had to find arms without a bunch of pockets)

Holy ****. This thread sure was dead and buried... all the way back on Page 9. It has been almost two years since I have posted anything hew here. :-X

I don't have any figure updates at the moment but I do have a new shelf display that I just finished. I desgined it primarily for my Stargate figures, but it is generic enough that it works for Star Wars too.

I have to clean up the sides (not pictured) but other than that I'm done with it. Originally I was just going to make a plain old white foamcore display to raise up my figures. Realizing that was boring, I decided to do something in the same vein as Muftak's shelf displays (http://www.jedidefender.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=16761.0). I'd be lying if I said I didn't take a lot of inspiration from Bobb's work. I really tried to combine form and function on this display. I wanted this to primarily be a shelf, but have elements of nature mixed in. I built in a removable Stargate on the top shelf there. I wanted to have in partially in the ground like most gates are. In the event I want to use this for Star Wars figures I can just take the Gate off and it becomes a generic display. The DHD, and the lichen bushes are also removable.

The base is made from several layers of pink insulation foam that I sculpted with some hobby knives. It was then plastered with plaster of paris mixed with a bit of kitty liter (I'm going to try something else besides kitty litter next time, it was a pain to work with). I painted it first with a dark grey base coat, then with a black wash, a brown wash, and then finished off with some drybrushing. For the greenery I just used some Woodlands Scenics model railroad supplies. I really wish I would have used this method when making the terrain for the UGP, it would have turned out a lot better I think. The grass mats are nice and quick I suppose but tthis looks a lot more realistic. It is easier to give the ground subtleelevation changes and it is really easy to layer several types of material for more natural ground cover. It looks really cool in places when some of the rocks poke throught the grass.

I had so much fun making this that I really want to make a few more. I've been brainstorming trying to come up with something that would work for my Galactica figures, and then Star Wars as well. I think these kind of displays really work nicely and don't really take up a whole lot of room. Enough of my blathering here it is: (click the thumbnails)

The pictures are kind of crappy and the flashed washed out some of the detail. I should have taken shot shots at an angle to show the depth of the thing... oh well. I'll try to update with those at some point. Let me know what you guys think.  :)

Wow, it's great to see you back in the customizing mix Ryan.  And very refreshing too.  Without a doubt you've always been one of my favorite customizers on any board, and your talents in this hobby seem to come completely natural to you.  I'll never forget how much work you did on the UGP, and the precarious position we would have been in if not for your incredible work and dedication to making the landscape.  Looks like you've mastered the pink insulation foam too... great stuff isn't it?  I wish I had known about that stuff earlier, I've been toying with it some and it's by far my favorite material now to work with.

It's The Return of Sith Lord Chaos!

Also, I'm sending you a PM...

Looks great, Ryan.

I am glad I could be an inspiration. Your method of making the natural rocks worked incredible! Good job.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the comments. I'd like to get back to doing this kind of thing more regularly, it really is a lot of fun.

It currently is residing in my parent's basement in the inside of a very large diorama that has been a WIP for years now. I need a good spot to display it in my room, and it is currently too full. Hopefully this summer I'll have time to reorganize the room a bit and make some space for it.
