Title: Black Series 3.75" Titanium Series Figures
Post by: Jeff on February 9, 2017, 10:36 AM
From io9 (http://io9.gizmodo.com/an-exclusive-look-at-some-of-the-new-toys-celebrating-s-1792170393)

"The 3.75-inch figurines in the new Titanium series will retail for $15 each, and are all based on A New Hope. While they’re static figurines rather than poseable action figures, each of the six —Darth Vader, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Han Solo—also feature accessories like FX pieces for their weapons, as well as their own special backdrops. The backdrops include two different inserts, a backdrop from the movies, and also character art that can be connected to other Titanium series figure stands to complete the full scene."

I feel a philosophical collecting crisis coming on... I'm assuming these are metal and not plastic?  Non-posable, but scaled with the regular line we've been collecting for 20 years...

Would one buy these and mix them in with regular figures or treat them as something completely separate?

I cringed when I read the word "figurines" in that article.

Yes.  Titanium Series = die-cast.

Would one buy these and mix them in with regular figures or treat them as something completely separate?

Do whatever you did the last time they tried this (like Nick said, 12 years ago - 2005 (https://www.jedidefender.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=11536.0)). :P  Although the 2005-2007 version had a plastic case and these look like they won't.

I have no problem treating them as their own separate thing and passing on them.

I cringed when I read the word "figurines" in that article.

Well, these are non-posable so they really are more "figurine" than "action figure". ;)

The "figurine" term always gives me a bit of a flashback to Star Wars Celebration 2 or 3 when some security guy at the Indiana Convention Center was yelling out "Line up her for your exclusive FIGURINES!"  (Either the C2 exclusive George Lucas X-wing pilot or the Darth Vader with voice stand)

As for these?  Yeah, if they're a side line that's separate from the standard 3.75" figure line I may very likely pass on them.  Some of it is based on finances, and some of it's based on how good they look.  I was able to do the old Titanium figure line back in the day because my collecting budget was greater.  Now?  Not so much.

That's probably where I'll end up.  I think I want to see them in person first though.

Seems kinda lame.  For $15 I would be more interested in having 5POA figures with stands like these.  I wonder why they felt like unposeable metal figures was the way to go.

I remember when they did this.... 12 years ago.  :(

And there were piles upon piles of those figures sitting in the clearance aisle for 75% off in 2008, and they STILL didn't sell!

I doubt these will be any different.

Pretty much just die cast versions of the 2002 era extreme pose figures. Which I didn't mind. The Han is very reminiscent of the 25th anniversary Han. But these are not the figures I'm looking for. I can see nabbing one or two on clearance, but doubtful. I don't own a single figure from the previous Titanium line. Never appealed to me.

These are muff cabbage.  Easy pass.

I hope something decent comes out this year but yeah, these are an easy pass even if they were plastic.

...and there's your Cantina distillery, guys!  ::)

Is it bad that I'm more interested in these for the bases and backgrounds than the actual figures?

Shoulders are articulated.

There is some debate about whether those are actual articulation points or just assembly points.  Looks like a few might have shoulder joints, but they could just be assembly points with no movement.  Hard to tell in the pics.

Agreed.  If they wanna do something "special" they should pack these in with their regular 3.75" figures.

Always wondered even in 02 why Hasbro would spend one cent on articulation that is utterly useless like that shoulder joint.  Like...  really?  You're gonna give that a ball joint and not the actual "toy" figures which are basically as much a statue as these are?

Not really any interest from me either on these, although I do sort of like the bases/backdrops. I'm always tempted to get the Han and Chewie from each line, but that would be about it.

Better. Acid tips on secondary market.  Tho the base for the 6" figs is interesting but the figure is still muff cabbage.

On your mark, get set...terrible.  :(

All I think of when I see stuff like is how the money, development time and resources, etc could have been used in so many more interesting ways.

They should be playing to their strengths this year, instead of endlessly chasing the next new thing. Have ANY of those ideas panned out recently?

There is at least some minimal articulation. If you look at the two Vader shots, you can see that his right arm is in a more elevated position with the lightsaber blade effect attached. Also, the left hand/arm in that shot is turned "up" more (showing more of the palm).

These look an awful like the 25th anniversary figures just in die cast metal. Definite pass, shame they didn't put the resources used on these into proven sellers like their bread and butter...

Could've done the stand thing with SA 3 3/4" figures, most of which would be existing tooling.  But that wouldn't tap into the huge die cast figurine market. We already saw how Hasbro deftly entered the little plastic army men market and did so well they didn't even need to continue.

Someone on Reddit bought one or two of these and gave them a recommendation... for the stands. Apparently these come with a few pegs, which fit regular 3.75 inch figures (might have to trim the length of some since they'll stick out too far on some figures), and you can place them in various points on the base. So once these hit clearance they might be worth it for the bases, but otherwise the figures are a waste of money and resources, and are made even worse with the awful paint apps.

Ordered a set of these from Toys R Us.com using the Friends and Family 15% discount that was in effect last week. Got them in today.

Not great, but not horrible either. I don't regret adding them to my collection.

The display bases are nice and if these ever hit clearance around here, I'll probably grab a few just for the bases.

Pete - if you open these and get a chance can you take a picture of some of the bases?  I'm interested in they can connect in any way, and if there are any differences between the different figure bases, and if the backdrops are removeable/interchangeable.

I may have to grab some of these for the bases if they get deeply discounted.

I've picked up both Vader and Leia. Are they great? No. Do I wish Hasbro would have invested time and money into another line? Yes.

That being said, I like these two. I may end up with the rest.

The parts of the stands that the figures stand on are only connectable with their backdrops - you can't get rid of the backdrop piece and just connect the bases.

The backdrops could theoretically have the cardboard inserts they come with removed and replaced, not sure how good that will look though. You'd need to put the backdrop on a stiff material so there's no rippling of the backdrop, so maybe using double-sided tape to adhere your "replacement" backdrop onto the cardboard one provided might be the way to go.

There are no differences in the figure bases in fact the pegs/peg-hole feature is not really a feature, it's more of Hasbro's way of saving money. I didn't really enjoy the puzzle-like nature of trying to figure out which peg-hole combination fit the stance of the metal figure I was setting up and I'm definitely not happy with the two holes that seemed to match my Han Solo the best.

I agree with Pete on the stands. I had to force Leia to fit into two peg holes and Vader I just gave up on. He is only using one peg hole.

I finally saw these in a store (Target).  Wow do these suck.  The ones I saw didn't have great paint apps and left me with an even stronger WTF? feeling.

The packaging wasn't great as you couldn't really see the bases or backdrops, and the figures were really encased in a thick bunch of plastic on the sides.

I'm still interested in seeing one in person loose and maybe getting these for the stands, but it would have to be on a super steep discount (70%).

GameStop has marked these down to about $13 each AND they have a BOGO 50% off deal for them.  And I'm still not buying these.

Maybe if they turn up at 5 Below I would get them for the bases.  But the figures really don't interest me.  And that goes for wave 2 also, which was just revealed by FlyGuy in the past couple of days.

The completist in me picks up one each of these just so my MIB/MIP Black Series 3.75" collection is "complete". Lame reason, I know, I blame my OCD.
