Post by: DSJ™ on February 27, 2003, 09:31 AM
Television's "Mister Rogers," the cultural icon and kindly neighbor to generations of American children, died Thursday at the age of 74.

I grew up watching his show "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood"

He will be missed.  :(

Please won't you be my neighbor?

Very sad indeed.  I know Mr. Rogers has been the butt of more than a few jokes over the years, but this was really a wonderful man who spent his life trying to help children.  I was certainly one of the many who would watch Mr. Rogers every day on TV when I was a little kid (along with Sesame Street, of course).

R.I.P. Mr. Rogers, I hope to be your neighbor again some day...   :)

Hats off to one of the best entertainers of all time.

Lat week I was in Cincinnati and ate at The Montgomery Inn home of the Rib King who was good friends with Bob while he was alive.  There are a ton of pictures of the two of them together in the resturaunt and I was thinking of what an American Icon he was.

However, he means absolutely nothing to my generation, just that he was old and he always went to entertain the troops...

RIP Bob, thanks indeed for the memories

Yeah I am 29 and remember the tv specials as a kid growing up.  He seemed to mean much more to my parents and grandparents.  I can certainly see why.  He seemed to be a great mann as well as an entertainer.  I doubt we'll ever see anything quite like him again.

Thanks for the memories indeed, Bob.  What a great entertainer and to an extent humanitarian.  Strange to see that both he and George Burns just barely seemed to hang on long enough until they hit that magic century mark, before finally letting go...

It's all good though.  He's just up in heaven now entertaining God, the angels, and all of our previously fallen troops!  I'm sure they've all been anxiously awaiting his arrival for quite some time now.   8)

Rest in peace, Bob.  You will be missed...

Title: Charles Bronson Dies at 81

By BOB THOMAS, Associated Press Writer

LOS ANGELES - Charles Bronson, the Pennsylvania coal miner who drifted into films as a villain and became a hard-faced action star, notably in the popular "Death Wish" vengeance movies, has died. He was 81.

Bronson died Saturday of pneumonia at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center with his wife at his bedside, publicist Lori Jonas said. He had been in the hospital for weeks, Jonas said.

During the height of his career, Bronson was hugely popular in Europe; the French knew him as "le sacre monstre" (the sacred monster), the Italians as "Il Brutto" (the ugly man). In 1971, he was presented a Golden Globe as "the most popular actor in the world."

Like Clint Eastwood, whose spaghetti westerns won him stardom, Bronson had to make European films to prove his worth as a star. He left a featured-role career in Hollywood to play leads in films made in France, Italy and Spain. His blunt manner, powerful build and air of danger made him the most popular actor in those countries.

At age 50, he returned to Hollywood a star.

In a 1971 interview, he theorized on why the journey had taken him so long:

"Maybe I'm too masculine. Casting directors cast in their own, or an idealized image. Maybe I don't look like anybody's ideal."

His early life gave no indication of his later fame. He was born Charles Buchinsky on Nov. 3, 1921 — not 1922, as studio biographies claimed — in Ehrenfeld, Pa. He was the 11th of 15 children of a coal miner and his wife, both Lithuanian immigrants.

Young Charles learned the art of survival in the tough district of Scooptown, "where you had nothing to lose because you lost it already." The Buchinskys lived crowded in a shack, the children wearing hand-me-downs from older siblings. At the age of 6, Charles was embarrassed to attend school in his sister's dress.

Charles' father died when he was 10, and at 16 Charles followed his brothers into the mines. He was paid $1 per ton of coal and volunteered for perilous jobs because the pay was better. Like other toughs in Scooptown, he raised some hell and landed in jail for assault and robbery.

He might have stayed in the mines for the rest of his life except for World War II.

Drafted in 1943, he served with the Air Force in the Pacific, reportedly as a tail gunner on a B29. Having seen the outside world, he vowed not to return to the squalor of Scooptown.

He was attracted to acting not, he claimed, because of any artistic urge; he was impressed by the money movie stars could earn. He joined the Philadelphia Play and Players Troupe, painting scenery and acting in a few minor roles.

At the Pasadena Playhouse school, Bronson improved his diction, supporting himself by selling Christmas cards and toys on street corners. Studio scouts saw him at the Playhouse and he was cast as a sailor in the 1951 service comedy "You're in the Navy Now" starring Gary Cooper (news).

As Charles Buchinsky or Buchinski, he played supporting roles in "Red Skies of Montana," "The Marrying Kind," "Pat and Mike" (in which he fell victim to Katharine Hepburn's judo), "The House of Wax," "Jubal" and other films. In 1954 he changed his last name, fearing reaction in the McCarthy era to Russian-sounding names.

Bronson's first starring role came in 1958 with "Machine-Gun Kelly," an exploitation film made in eight days. He also appeared in two brief TV series, "Man with a Camera" (1958) and "The Travels of Jamie McPheeters" (1963).

His status grew with impressive performances in "The Magnificent Seven," "The Great Escape," "The Battle of the Bulge," "The Sandpiper" and "The Dirty Dozen." But real stardom eluded him, his rough-hewn face and brusque manner not fitting the Hollywood tradition for leading men.

Alain Delon, like many French, had admired "Machine-Gun Kelly," and he invited Bronson to co-star with him in a British-French film, "Adieu, L'Ami" ("Farewell, Friend"). It made Bronson a European favorite.

Among his films abroad was a hit spaghetti western, "Once Upon a Time in the West." Finally Hollywood took notice.

Among his starring films: "The Valachi Papers," "Chato's Land," "The Mechanic," "Valdez," "The Stone Killer," "Mr. Majestyk," "Breakout," "Hard Times," "Breakout Pass," "White Buffalo," "Telefon," "Love and Bullets," "Death Hunt," "Assassination," "Messenger of Death."

The titles indicate the nature of the films: lots of action, shooting, dead bodies. They were made on medium-size budgets, but Bronson was earning $1 million a picture before it was fashionable.

His most controversial film came in 1974 with "Death Wish." As an affluent, liberal architect, Bronson's life is shattered when young thugs kill his wife and rape his daughter. He vows to rid the city of such vermin, and his executions brought cheers from crime-weary audiences.

The character's vigilantism brought widespread criticism, but "Death Wish" became one of the big moneymakers of the year. The controversy accelerated when Bernard Goetz shot youths he thought were threatening him in a New York subway.

Bronson made three more "Death Wish" films, and in 1987 he defended them:

"I think they provide satisfaction for people who are victimized by crime and look in vain for authorities to protect them. But I don't think people try to imitate that kind of thing."

Bronson could be as taciturn in interviews as he appeared on the screen. He remained aloof from the Hollywood scene, once observing, "I have lots of friends and yet I don't have any."

His first marriage was to Harriet Tendler, whom he met when both were fledgling actors in Philadelphia. They had two children before divorcing.

In 1966, Bronson fell in love with the lovely blonde British actress Jill Ireland, who happened to be married to British actor David McCallum (news). Bronson reportedly told McCallum bluntly: "I'm going to marry your wife."

The McCallums divorced in 1967, and Bronson and Ireland married the following year. She costarred in several of his films.

The Bronsons lived in a grand Bel Air mansion with seven children: two by his previous marriage, three by hers and two of their own. They also spent time in a colonial farmhouse on 260 acres in West Windsor, Vt.

Ireland lost a breast to cancer in 1984. She became a spokesperson for the American Cancer Society (news - web sites) and wrote a best-selling book, "Life Wish." She followed with "Life Lines," in which she told of her struggle to rescue her 27-year-old son, Jason McCallum Bronson, from drug addiction. He died of an overdose in 1989, and she died of cancer a year later.

Bronson is survived by his wife, Kim, six children and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be private.

Title: RIP Johnny Cash and John Ritter...
Post by: JediMAC on September 12, 2003, 06:39 AM
God almighty this has been a tough year on celebrities and entertainers!  Add two more to the 2003 RIP list, as we've just lost country music legend Johnny Cash (at 71), and comedy/acting star John Ritter (unexpectedly, at only 54)...   :'(

Can't say I followed Johnny Cash's career or music too closely, not being much of a country music fan myself, but I know that he is one of the greatest legends in the music industry and loved by many, many people.  He was recently honored at this years VMA's (on MTV) just several weeks ago, but unfortunately had to cancel his personal appearance at that awards show at the very last minute due to health problems.  Very, very sad indeed.

Losing John Ritter, a.k.a. Jack Tripper from Three's Company, hit a lot closer to home for me though, as that was one of my all-time favorite shows, and one that I watched religiously growing up.  He was SO damned funny!  And to lose him so unexpectedly, at such a relatively young age, is very saddening and shocking.  This is what CNN mentioned happened in regards to his passing:

Quote
(CNN) -- Actor and comedian John Ritter has died unexpectedly after he was rushed to the hospital for a "dissection of the aorta,"...

He's also been starring in the recent ABC series "8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter."  Truly heartbreaking...

RIP Johnny and John.  Thank you for the many wonderful years of music and laughs you provided us all with.  You will both be missed dearly...

Cash: classy, talented and genuine.  One of the true pioneers and greats of country music.  (CC will not be happy)

Very sorry and surprised to hear of Mr. Palmer's passing this morning.  Died of a heart attack in Paris, BTW...

He gave us some true classics, especially in respect to the video genre.  I agree with Jimmy, that there were some great songs there, dating all the way back to his Power Station days:  Some Like it Hot & Get it On (Bang a Gong), plus Bad Case of Loving You (Doctor, Doctor) from his earlier solo days...

Literally.

I know where the church he attended is, and all that stuff...  He lived in Squirrel Hill, which really is in the heart of Pittsburgh.  A nice community, and I'm sure he made it all the more great when he was alive.

Can't say I watched Cap'n Kangaroo...  Bit out of my age range (Sorry Scott), but I know my brother Sean watched it often.

No prob...I must have been around the last agegroup though to see the Captain, he went off the mainstream air probably right before I started school (1981?) I was just reading that the show was on until the 90's must not have been on everywhere though and not at regular hours.

Sesame Street and Mister Rogers were a bigger part of boyhood for me, Captain Kangaroo was right there though too

Tony Randall was fantastic in The Odd Couple as Felix Unger.

The Odd Couple Theme (http://www.televisionheaven.co.uk/odd.wav)

Though a few may not remember or even have seen his performance in the fantasy movie "7 Faces of Dr. Lao". A very good flick IMO.  8)

Title: Richard Biggs-Dr Franklin Babylon 5 Passes Away
Post by: DSJ™ on May 25, 2004, 10:35 AM
Richard Biggs passes away.   :'(

From B5TV.com (http://www.b5tv.com/greatmaker/news/288/)

B5's Doctor Franklin dies suddenly, aged 43.
Posted By: AntonyF on 2004-05-23

It's our very sad duty to report on the death of Stephen Biggs, who played Doctor Franklin in Babylon 5. He was 43.

It's an odd twist of fate, as it's only two months ago that Richard's on-screen father in B5, Paul Winfield , passed away. (http://www.b5tv.com/greatmaker/news/284/)

J. Michael Straczynski broke the news of Richard's death in a post to the moderated B5 newsgroup:

"I was awakened today with several phone calls from cast members and Doug [Netter] to pass along the terrible news that this morning, Richard Biggs passed away.

"We're still gathering information, so take none of this as firm word, but what seems to have happened, happened quickly. He woke up, got up out of bed...and went down. The paramedics who showed up suggested it was either an aneurysm or a massive stroke.

"His family members have been informed, and all of the the cast have, as far as we can determine, also been informed.

"This is a terrible loss for all of us. Richard was a consummate professional but more than that he was an honorable, stand-up guy. If he gave you his word on something, you never had to wonder about it afterward. He was always helpful and supportive of all the cast, even those who only came in for one episode, always with a ready smile and determined to do whatever it took to make the scene work. He was, quite simply, a terrific guy, and everyone here is just devastated at the news.

"More word as this develops. We may try to have some kind of fund raiser to help give whatever assistance may be helpful for his kids.

"We all miss him terribly."

Biggs brought Franklin to our screens from the first regular episode of B5 "Midnight on the Firing Line", to the very last episode "Sleeping in Light". He appeared in two out of the three TNT-produced TV movies, "In the Beginning" and "Thirdspace", and reprising his character of Franklin was the only major B5 actor to appear in short-lived spin-off Crusade.

Away from B5 his TV appearances included Days of Our Lives, Tremors, J.A.G., NYPD Blue and Touched by an Angel.

Yeah, you bastard.  ;)

Me, not being an entirely sympathetic person or especially emotional when death is involved, really can only offer this observation – sometimes loses are greater than the individual person themselves.

Reagan, in my opinion, played one of the most critical roles in the 20th century in shaping our current lives - from economy, world political outlook, and attitude towards national identity - regardless of how you feel about the results. When someone with that much impact on the world leaves it, it can often be wondered if the inspiration for those impacts has left as well.

It’s sort of a passing of an age as well as a person.

People come, people go, and they most certainly all die. Some get hit by buses, some kill themselves, some get killed by others, some grow old and fade away. Few make us better people before it happens, and that’s what I think applies to President Reagan.

:)

Reagan's Presidency was full of shining moments: Space Program, Job Recovery and Economic Growth, planting the seeds for the end of the Cold War, and some pretty big failures: Iran-Contra, start of the early 90's recession, Deficit Spending, Arms Build Ups...I think the diefication of his legacy is a little bit overstated.  He wasn't necessarily the brightest guy and some of his policies and initiatives were way out there (Star Wars...the idea of which he received when making a movie in the 50's)

I give him mucho credit for pulling the US out of the 70's post-Nixon, Post-Energy Crisis, Post-Vietnam and making us all feel it is good to be an American and we should all be proud of our country.  He was one of the best communicators of all time, his convictions and beliefs were rock solid and his love for Nancy is something that should be an inspiration for all people in love.

He was one of the best Presidents of the last 50 years, for sure top 10, not so sure about top 5.

Alzheimer's truly is one of the worst diseases on the planet, not so much for the people afflicted but on the loved ones of the person who has the disease.  Glad to see all of their suffering is finally over

Cool with me.  Hamilton was never all that exciting in the first place...  Of course, when I mentioned the idea to my wife, she retorted that Hamilton is the one who set up the whole United States Treasury in the first place, and therefore deserves to stay on there.

History teachers...   ::)

Speaking of which, it's been pretty crazy around here this past week, with all the motorcade processions and viewings right nearby.  Took me forever to get to work this morning, when they were transporting Reagan to Air Force One.  One of the schools my wife teaches at (Moorpark JC), has been closed this week, to allow everyone to park at their campus and then take shuttles up to Reagan's Library for the viewing.

Sad seeing his wife Nancy hug his coffin too...   :'(

The 80's will forever be my all-time favorite decade, and I'm sure I owe at least partial thanks to "The Gipper" for that...  RIP.  You served your country well, Mr. President.

As for placing him on currency....no thanks.  I can't justify taking Hamilton, Jefferson or Roosevelt off of a piece of currency to make room for Reagan.  Especially since Reagan wasn't exactly our best fiscal president.  We had a big recession under him, then rampant inflation, staggering deficits, and a major stock market crash.  Too much bad economics bad karma going on there to even THINK of putting him on our money.

I will certainly offer the following:  he seemed to be a very genuine person who believed what he said.  Also, I hope his illness can bring a greater deal of awareness to the plight of those suffering from Alzheimer's disease.  Every case of a person who suffers from Alzheimer's and loses their mental faculties is a tragedy unto itself.

Amen...

Let it end...  I'm trying to watch the news, and it's this stuff...

Anyone dying is tragic, even if you don't agree with the political views of the individual who died.  There's no need for this.

And personally, call me crazy, but I find going to see him "tacky".  In my little world you don't go to funerals/viewings unless you can say you knew the person.  Public figure and all aside, it still strikes me as a bit much.

It's sad, but lay off and let life go on like he would have wanted, and like the world does naturally when anyone else passes.

And let me have my TV back because I'd actually like to see a weather report for the weekend instead of a black hearse and some motorcycle cops moving at 2 mph down a highway.

No disrespect of course, as he seems like he was a very polite man in his "normal" life, and that speaks miles about him as a person no matter what way you view him politically.

Looks like the pomp is almost done...

I think the week has been a little overblown but I was talking to my mom about it last night and she said the attention and "hype" was 1000x times more during the week Kennedy died and was buried.  Its sort of a Catch...Catch-22 that you want to honor the guy but you also don't need to go all out...and yet if your rival media outlet does it, you're almost forced into doing the same thing

My opinions on his Presidency changed a great deal after I read his official biography Dutch.  Morris (who also wrote 2 excellent books on T Roosevelt) came to the conclusions that he was a man of almost supernatural conviction who generally was one of the most likeable men he had ever met.  But there also was not much depth to him, he was not an intellectual, he had some really goofy ideas.  But he pulled our country out of some pretty devisive times, steered the way to the end of the Cold War and was generally a great compromiser and much more liberal in a lot of ways that Conservatives like to paint him as.  As I said earlier, his communication ability, sense of humor and congeniality went a long way to making him very likeable.  And I think that appeal is what touched a lot of people.  And that's why we're hearing and seeing so much about him.

As far as all the Repubs who have jumped the bandwagon regarding tribute to Reagan (who I have a great deal of respect for, I just don't respect the ideas I have heard).

Renaming the Pentagon for Reagan - CRAP IDEA
Reagan's face on Mt. Rushmore - CRAP IDEA. I used to live in the shadow of Rushmore. There isn't any viable rock left on the mountain and the idea just sucks.
Reagan on money - CRAP IDEA - sorta.  I don't think he needs to be on a bill, but consider the following...

anyone here remember the Franklin half dollar??
Probably not, I am one of the older members of the SW society in here.  The Franklin turned into the Eisenhower half dollar.  Eisenhower turned into the Kennedy.  So, here we have a coin that has already shown itself as the most changable in the past 40 years.  I say a Reagan half dollar is the most viable option regards money.

Besides, California hasn't submitted their quarter design yet....why don't they go for it as well???

I didn't agree with this man's politics again, but Pappy Bush skydiving at 80's not too shabby.  Good for him.

Bush's plane was shot down in WW2, and they have footage of him being rescued in the Pacific.  He's no stranger to harrowing dives from the sky (controlled or otherwise).

There was some rumble (wishful thinking perhaps) they would make a 1:18 scale plane of his with a figure of him as a young man.  Even as a Democrat I'd pick that set up!

"As you may know Bush had to bail out of his Jet in World War 2."  ::)

If I remember right his plane was a Dive Bomber or Toperdo Plane and he was shot down in a 1943 Battle which makes him having a jet historical since that would mean the Americans first used a jet bomber rather then the Germans.

Rest in Peace Marlon, you've earned it

Title: RIP Girl Who Lived Behind My House
Post by: Scott on August 2, 2004, 12:35 AM
I was out at the BBQ last night cooking some chicken and steak for my family when I started hearing sirens coming from all over the place.  There are townhomes located right behind our house and there's always kids out there running around, now, sadly, there is one less of them.  I saw the ambulance leave and I had though someone either had a heart attack or was shot, this is much worse than that

RIP Jennifer Haffely.

Maplewood girl dies after playground accident
August 2, 2004 GIRL0802
A 4-year-old girl who was injured after becoming entangled in a playground rope ladder near her Maplewood home died Sunday.

Jennifer Haffely stopped breathing after her neck got caught in the rope ladder at about 5 p.m. Saturday.

She died about 4 p.m. Sunday after being taken off life support at Children's Hospital in St. Paul, according to hospital spokesman James Lockwood.

Her family declined to comment.

A memorial service has been scheduled for 9 p.m. today at the playground on Mesabi Avenue. A memorial fund in her name has been established at Lake Area Banks, 1535A Beam Av., Maplewood, 55109.

One of my all-time faves. His performance in Natural Born Killers will forever be as creepy as it has always been underrated. Even when he was cast in awful movies, he was still funny. And he smoked weed every day and lived to be 82 years old.

Quote
I haven't spoken to my wife in years. I didn't want to interrupt her.

A girl phoned me the other day and said "Come on over, there's nobody home." I went over. Nobody was home.

I told my psychiatrist that everyone hates me. He said I was being ridiculous - everyone hasn't met me yet.

My wife and I were happy for twenty years. Then we met.

My wife is always trying to get rid of me. The other day she told me to put the garbage out. I said to her I already did. She told me to go and keep an eye on it.

My wife's jealousy is getting ridiculous. The other day she looked at my calendar and wanted to know who May was.

When I was a kid my parents moved a lot, but I always found them. [/quote

'Superman' star Christopher Reeve dead at 52 (http://edition.cnn.com/2004/SHOWBIZ/Movies/10/11/obit.reeve.ap/)

When I saw Superman back in the theater in 1978, when he caught Lois lane & the helicopter, I will always remember this line:

I can remember soon after we moved to our new house when I was around 4 my Aunt called my Mom and asked her if I would go see Superman with her.  It was one of the last naps I can remember my mom making me take and I can still remember standing in line outside the theater with my Aunt and the awe I had in the movie.  He was Superman for our generation...

How ironic is it that he didn't die soon after his accident and he was able to live the last 9 years fighting for Stem Cell and Paralysis research?  How much money did he raise to fight that battle?  Thanks for the memories Christopher, you will be missed :'(

Christopher Reeve was a childhood idol of mine since I laid eyes on the first Superman movie. After the tradgic horse back riding accident in 1995, Christopher Reeve became a real inspiration to everyone, by eventually gaining 70% of feeling in his body, and staying physicaly fit with the help of his wife, doctors, and electrodes to stimulate his muscles. In 1997 Chris Reeve won several awards for his film about paralysis. Christopher Reeve worked so hard, and stayed true to his values. He truely was Superman.

Rest in peace, Superman. You will be missed.  :'(

Title: RIP Sergei Zholtok
Post by: Jeff on November 3, 2004, 11:38 PM
Center collapses after excusing himself from game
Associated Press

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Nashville Predators center Sergei Zholtok died Wednesday of an apparent heart ailment. He was 31.

The Predators announced that Zholtok died in Latvia, where he was playing for Riga 2000 during the NHL lockout.

"We are all saddened and shocked to hear of Sergei's sudden passing," Predators general manager David Poile said in a statement. "He was a hardworking player who was well-liked by his teammates and coaches. We extend our deepest sympathies to the Zholtok family."

TSN.ca reported Wednesday night that Zholtok excused himself from a game and collapsed and died on the way to the locker room.

Zholtok left a game in January 2003 because of dizziness and fatigue and was taken to the hospital for tests, causing concern for Wild coach Jacques Lemaire.

"I don't think he's OK," he said at the time.

Zholtok was also a late scratch two nights later against Buffalo when he skated during warmups but didn't feel well enough to play.

The forward then sat out early last season when the problems returned. Zholtok again left in the second period because of fainting spells. He returned to the hospital and was diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat and flulike symptoms.

After missing seven games, Zholtok was cleared by a doctor to return to the lineup.

"It's a very sad thing," former Wild teammate Filip Kuba told The Associated Press. "He was a very close friend of mine. He was a very good person. ... It's hard right now to talk about it."

Zholtok appeared in 588 NHL games from 1992 to 2004 with Boston, Ottawa, Montreal, Edmonton, Minnesota and Nashville. He joined the Predators on March 5 in a trade with Minnesota.

In 70 games last season with the Wild and Predators, Zholtok had 14 goals and 17 assists. For his career, Zholtok had 111 goals and 147 assists.

"Sergei was a great competitor and a valuable member of our organization for almost three years and will be greatly missed by his teammates and his fans in the hockey world," Wild general manager Doug Risebrough said.

Nashville declined to make a qualifying offer to Zholtok after the end of the season, which ended in a playoff loss to Detroit.

In recent years, Zholtok hooked up with fellow countryman and former Carolina Hurricanes goalie Arturs Irbe to organize an online auction of hockey memorabilia to benefit abused children in Latvia. They collected pucks, sticks and equipment autographed by more than 115 NHL players from 18 teams, including the Wild's Marian Gaborik, for sale to the highest bidder.

"Sergei was the consummate team player," Senators president Roy Mlakar said. "He will be remembered in Ottawa for his sincere involvement in our community. Moreover, he was a class human being and family man, who will be remembered as such by the Senators family."

Zholtok is survived by his wife Anna, and two sons.

He was one of my favorite players when he was with the Wild... Guess I'll have to break out the Zholtok jersey to wear to work tomorrow in memorial.  :(

My personal favorite ODB moment (aside from the food stamp trip, which was hysterical, made moreso by the fact that it was true) was when he was on some MTV call-in show with a couple of other people he'd done a song with.  I think this was when he "officially" changed his name to "Big Baby Jesus" by the way.

So, a woman called in and asked the others what they were giving back to the African American community now that they were all successful.  She asked ODB/BBJ what he was doing for the African American community, and ODB just kind of looked surprised, pointed to his chest, and calmly said:

"Nothin!" ;D

Everyone on the set cracked up laughing, as did I sitting at home.  He will truly be missed. :'(

I was reading the other day on CNN that Johhny was Letterman's secret writer (http://edition.cnn.com/2005/SHOWBIZ/TV/01/19/television.carson.reut/index.html).

Many people got there start on the Tonight Show, the man made me laugh. Never missed a show, my best was Carnac The Magnificent!

Carnac: Sis Boom Bah.
Envelope: What sound does an exploding sheep make?   ;D

This is Johnny Carson's final 'Tonight Show' monologue (http://edition.cnn.com/2005/SHOWBIZ/TV/01/23/carson.monolgue/index.html).

I heard on the radio on the way home from work this morning that Jay Leno will have a tribute to Johnny tonight. My VCR is set.  :)

Thanks for the laughs Johnny, you are the King of Late Night talk!  :'(

I have such fond memories of staying up late to watch the Tonight Show during the summers of the late 70s and early 80s. Being a kid at the time, I don't think I actually understood all of the humor, but his delivery was everything and pretty much always had me chuckling, if not laughing out loud. Since his retirement, I've probably seen the Tonight show only a handful of times; not because Leno is there, but because Johnny isn't.

Title: RIP Arthur Miller
Post by: Deanpaul on February 11, 2005, 02:10 PM
Playwright Arthur Miller Dies at 89. (http://apnews.excite.com/article/20050211/D886FP200.html)

I studied theater in Chicago and always connected with the work of Arthur Miller, especially "Death of a Salesman". RIP, Mr. Miller.

"A lot of my work goes to the center of where we belong - if there is any root to life - because nowadays the family is broken up, and people don't live in the same place for very long," Miller said in a 1988 interview.

"Dislocation, maybe, is part of our uneasiness. It implants the feeling that nothing is really permanent."

Playwright Edward Albee said Miller had paid him a compliment, saying "that my plays were 'necessary.' I will go one step further and say that Arthur's plays are 'essential.'"

Miller's career was marked by early success. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for "Death of a Salesman" in 1949, when he was just 33 years old.

His marriage to Marilyn Monroe in 1956 further catapulted the playwright to fame, though that was publicity he said he never pursued.

In a 1992 interview with a French newspaper, he called her "highly self-destructive" and said that during their marriage, "all my energy and attention were devoted to trying to help her solve her problems. Unfortunately, I didn't have much success."

Death of a Salesman was really affecting when I read it in high school, as was the Crucible. There's a version of Death of a Salesman with Dustin Hoffman which is just devastating in the depiction of Willy Loman.

Interesting relationship with Marilyn too.

My God, let's hope the end isn't near.  It scares the heck out of me thinking about that... I have too much I want to live for - and not all is Star Wars related.   ;)

My wife, parents, family, friends, pets, etc...

As for your friend Jediknight, I am so sorry.  My best friend committed suicied on Oct. 6, 2001.  He was also a huge Star Wars collector.  We had been friends for 16 years.  It's still hard, especially on nights like tonight, where he would have been right there with me huntig for toys.  As a matter of fact, his mother is in town tonight, and my family is taking her out to dinner.

God Bless...

I'm watching the service on Fox news. It's nice that they are airing it with some respect, and not speaking too much over it. They were reading emails from Jewish people, and people of other faiths, expressing their feelings.

JK and Chewie I'm really sorry to hear about your friends. I do';t know how it s for anyone that close to die but within the last 3 kids that went to my HS have died, one in my graduating class comitted suicide, another had a brain anayrism in his sleep, and another died in a car crash on the way to a school event.

Too bad about the pope, I'm not catholic and I'm not really a church going kind of guy, but still it's too bad. It was bound to happen soon though. Every other pope has died, he wasn't going to live forever like many almost believed, I did sense that in several Catholics that I know. Well he's headed to a better place anyways.

I'm not a catholic by any means but I had a chance to go to a Wednesday morning Mass three years ago in Rome - I'm glad that I did.  As far as Pope's go - he was among the best.

I'm worried that they'll fill his shoes with someone far more conservative though...

Very sad indeed.  I'm not Catholic (actually Protestant), but he's obviously such an important and beloved man the world over, that it's a sad passing for all people, regardless of faith.  May he rest in peace, and may the various Cardinals find a worthy successor to him...
