Hooray!  It's done!  8)

Great job on your self-portrait, Ripley.  It's creepy -- but cool!  The chestbursters always used to scare the heck out of me in the Alien movies, but your figure seems to be taking it very well, as people have been mentioning.  (In the 2nd photo down, she even seems a little melancholy...)  The blood spattering is a great touch and looks very convincing.  The hair you added to the Scarlett head worked out welll, too.

One question about this figure: what body and legs did you use?  It's not often that one comes across non-boot-wearing legs in the SW figure universe, but they are so useful for things like self-customs.

Obi-Wan in his mixed clone / Jedi gear looks very nice, too.  Which of the Obi-Wan heads did you use?  Whichever one it was, it was a good choice, as it bears a good resemblance to Ewan MacGregor.

Keep up the fine work.  We'll be watching this space!  :)

Customizing Tips and Tricks / Re: Fodder Alert!
« on: January 2, 2006, 01:32 PM »
I realize I'm coming very late to this topic, but it's always great hearing abt new fodder finds, and these Sahara figures look like just the thing: generic Human faces, plus a body that could come in handy for just about anything in the SW universe.  In my opinion, that already is a big advantage over the XD military figures fomr a customizing standpoint, for while those have superb Human heads, the bodies are so obviously Earth military that it doesn't look like it would be easy to make them into anything very SW-ish.  I'd sort of been avoiding those for that reason, despite their great heads.  But I certainly own't avoid these Sahara guys if I see them!  Guess I just have to remember to look in the Hot Wheels section next time I'm at a WalMart...

you mabey right Findswoman.

Well, I may be wrong, too... it won't be the first time!  :)  Lance, what sayest thou?

I forgot to mention it the first time, but I also agree with your and In Rem's suggestion that we ask Doc for more info on this thing she's invented.  And why exactly she needs pilots because of it -- that seems a little odd.

Anyone?

Another excellent update!  The wheels are really rolling, and the plot is thickening -- one can just feel the tension in the air.  :)  And I don't think dialogue scenes are boring at all.  On the contrary, they're where the story gets told. And, as we know, friend Quazar here tells one mean story!  8)

We can say a few more words abt the bounty hunter, but we should also respond to Doc's request for more details, "no matter how trivial" -- because there is more we can tell her.  Back at the scene where Deak finds that his uncle's quarters have been ransacked, Deak notices that a big locked box is missing.  (Compare these scenes with the first scenes in the apartment.  It's the one that had been next to the black chest, that looks like a small, grayish refrigerator.)  Indeed, that may not even be "trivial."

Here's another little detail from the very very first scene of the story: Uncle Lance asks you to join him because "his mechanic/co-pilot had dropped out at the last minute" to go on a "three-month scouting operation in the Outer Rim" for a big mining company. Mining what?  Something legal, ,ike gold, or something illegal, like spice?  Maybe that's just a red herring, but there could well be a good reason for that.  (For the Harry Potter fans out there, think of Regulus Black in Book 5: Voldemort asked him to do some unspecified task, but he backed out at the last minute, and therefore got in beeg doo-doo...)  Anyway, just a thought.

Now, ą propos the bounty hunter, in response to In Rem and Jedistyle:

Let's see... it sounds like they want to know more about Fett, and I can't see any harm in relating what we know (especially since we don't know that it's BOBA FRIGGIN' FETT we nearly brushed with).

Quote from: jedistyle
Fang: Boba Fett, it's Boba Fett.(Fang gives a cautious stare to Doc)

See, that's the thing... we don't know if it's Boba Fett.  It may not be.  If I remember correctly, Quazar has mentioned before that figures of mainstream SW characters are not necessarily meant to represent those characters in the context of the photonovel.  The example he mentioned was Deak's mother, who is "played" by a Mon Mothma figure,  but isn't Mon Mothma herself.  (Lance, am I remembering this right?)  So this may very well just be a totally ersatz no-name Mandalorian-armor-wearing hunter being "played" by a Boba Fett figure.   Of course, that doesn't mean we can't tell Lucen and Doc a little more about him, and only Quazar knows for sure... ;)

Keep up the great work, everyone -- I'm looking forward to more, both from Quazar and from all of us discussers!  8)

What fun!  This is defnitely really taking off now.  And the eyebrows are a very cool touch.  Great discussion, all -- I've been enjoying reading the replies.

I don't really have much new to add from what people have already suggested.  While I'm mostly a diplomatic and non-violent sort, I don't think that a little anger, frustration, & indignation would be misplaced -- as long as we keep our cool as we express it (which can be done).  After all, they now know more of your story than you do of theirs.   They have really barely told you anything about who they are and what they are doing.

So I don't mind giving them the info they want, but, as many have also suggested, I believe we should be firm and insist that they tell us more of their story, too.  "Quid pro quo, Clarice."

"Look, I'll tell you more, but if I'm to help you out, as Doc keeps saying, it's only fair for you to tell me more, too.  What are these plans you mentioned?  Who are your 'operatives'?  Why do you need to avoid the Empire?"

If ti's a ship & a pilot they need, we can do both (although I realize that piloting isn't Deak's main specialty, as Quazar points out), and can offer them our services.  But only if they tell us some more about them. "You want a ship?  I've got one, and I can fly it.  But you need to tell me more about your mission if you do.  It's only fair."

As for our blaster... I agree with Chewie that whipping it out right now wouldn't be such a good idea.  If we do, it might give Lucen the wrong idea altogether, as if we only came down there to shoot them & destroy their plans -- they have shown us a bunch of trust in agreeing to meet us, after all.  We should really "keep our cool" here -- as my husband puts it, "what would Clint Eastwood do?"

For the same reason, I'm going to have to disagree with the idea of the thermal detonator bluff put forth by jedistyle. Sorry, jedistyle;)

Another option is to disarm ourselves and lay the blaster down.  Even Lucen Fang wouldn't really shoot a man he could see was unarmed, would he?  While you're telling him to "stop sticking blasters in your face" or whatever, you can even say something like "I'll put mine down if you put yours down." I also agree with In Rem and Chewie when they suggested saying something like, "If you shoot me, we won't be able to help each other out," or some such, because it's absolutely true.

Just my $0.02.  I know whatever happens in the end will still be cool and exciting and will lead our hero on to some great adventures!  8)

Another really great update, Lance!  And great way to encourage us players to talk amongst ourselves and have some real discussions about what to say and what not.  This is going to be fun.  :)

Those shots of the shafts are just amazing -- very professional, and sceery, too.  Heck, all of your backgrounds are wonderful.  8)  Brenlid -- another Hutt / crime boss type, perhaps?  Hopefully neither him nor Tolar are people you'll have to deal with anytime soon...

One small thing: didn't we put our gun away?  I ask because the inventory list says that it's still drawn.  Just checking.  :)

Now, some analysis of the situation.  Yes, Lucen and Fardle are holding the guns, but Doc is clearly the one in charge here, and she clearly has enough influence over both of them to keep them from doing anything too rash.  Even Lucen lowers his weapon when she tells him to.  Also, both Doc and Lucen seem like they want to hear your story; even Lucen said, "if you've got somethin' to say, say it."

So I'm definitely for telling them our story, and for telling them (most of) the truth.  But I also think we should be cautious about it, and not tell everything on the first go.  For example, it might be prudent to avoid mentioning his name at the beginning (at least until they ask us; maybe the story will seem familar to them).  Begin with the bare-bones, nutshell version, perhaps something like this:

"Yes, I have an uncle whom I think might be in trouble with the Empire.  I was supposed to work for him this summer, but he's been missing for X many days, and yesterday (or whevener) his apartment was ransacked by Imperial stormtroopers -- I noticed them leaving the apartment as I was coming home one day." (Notice what's being omitted there.)

We don't have to tell them his occupation, or even why we are looking for him.  Let them ask questions about particulars if they want to know. Maybe they'll recognize him...

Here's another thing.  Doc keeps talking about "mutual benefit," "helping each other out."  Well, if we're to hold up our end of that, we need to know their story, too.  So, somewhere in this conversation, we might respectfully ask them for their story.  Even if it's just, "And what could I do to help you?"

Anyway, just throwing out some ideas.  Any other thoughts from anyone? Can't wait to see where this goes next!

The Sith are aggressive.  The Jedi calculate our decisons and do what is morally right.  But were't not a Sith nor a Jedi.

Lance, remember the PM's we discussed - I really think the idea we had discussed would be a winner.  Might not go with what everyone was thinking this time, but could be a fun twist to it.  I'd love it for sure.  In a way, I think it would make both sides happy... feel free to PM to discuss more.

 :P

Oh, Chewie, do you have an idea for a compromise between the aggressive and non-aggressive camps?  Sounds very promising indeed.  Why not let us know what it is?  :)

Yeah, this is all in fun. And "softie" is entirely benign no matter how you cut it. The comment about lacking backbone... well, *maybe* that could be construed as offensive, but in context, I'm really talking about the characteristics that are being projected onto Deak.

Let's not get too touchy about this. It's all in good fun. If there is ever an ambiguity as to what I may or may not mean by a comment, please assume the nicer interpretation. It's not in me to use message boards to hurt others. :)

To the extent you may have been offended, findswoman, please accept my apology.

I definitely accept, In Rem.  No worries at all.  And I should apologize for being so sensitive -- it was just a very rough & hectic day when I posted that, and I was a little on edge.

Of course, even if one is a softie, one can still be a softie with great dignity and confidence:)

Lance, I can't wait to see what you've got for us next, whatever the majority ends up deciding.  You're so good at incorporating everyone's suggestions anyway that I'm sure no one will be disappointed!   8)

I posted this elsewhere, but honestly, I hope some of these softies wake up and grow a backbone. I don't want this thing to end with Deak face-down in a sewer somewhere because he was overly concerned with being nice. :P

Whoa there.  You're entitled to your opinion, and you're welcome to defend it in a civil manner, but calling those who disagree with you names is simply not appropriate.

Besides, as Jedistyle points out, I don't think Lance would ever do that to our hero.  And there are certainly worse things than being face-down in a sewer...

Oh wow, fantastic update, Lance!  What you've done with the tunnel is really awesome, and the way you integrate it with the room where Blondie is is simply amazing.  (Yes, there's a pun in there!)  I had almost forgot we were dealing with action figures here, this looks so much like a "real" 1:1 sci-fi movie set. Absolutely A1.  8)

I agree with Chewie that it's definitely time to make ourselves known, and move the story along.  I like the idea of saying "hello" from the grate first thing, before actually entering, just so it doesn't look like an ambush; sneaking out and surprising them seems like an unwise course of action, what with Lucen and the Wookiee on high alert.  Once Blondie recognizes your voice (and there's no reason why she wouldn't), you can tell her "I'm in here."  At that point, if Lucen is aiming his gun your way, I'm guessing Blondie would probably tell him to put it down, and then it will be safest for you to pry your way out.  That whole exchange sould take less than four minutes, I should think.

Now, ą propos Uncle Lance's possible Imperial connection: It's definitely a big possibility.  What seems clear from the story so far is that the Empire is definitely interested in him; why, however, it's not clear, nor is it clear whether or not he's willing to help them.  The fact that they have brought in the bounty hunter -- which the Empire doesn't usually do except as a last resort -- seems to suggest the possibility of at least some antagonism between Lance and the Empire.

Of course this is all complete speculation, but it's always such fun making these speculations about the storyline, and I definitely think we all should make more of them.  Anyone else?

And now, going from the sublime to the ridiculous...  ;)  I think the reason Deak's belt is a clear twist-tie is because it's supposed to be a piece of optical cable found on the floor of Callie's office.  Yes, it's pretty funny-looking, but it is perfectly consistent with the totally impromptu, cobbled-together nature of Deak's disguise. :)

Congratulations, Quazar, on another excellent update!  It always makes my day, without fail.  :)

Chewie, the thing is, Lance has already established a few posts back that our character's name can't be Quazar, because (a) Lance Quazar is our mother's brother rather than our father's (assuming that the traditional patriarchical naming system applies), and (b) "Lance Quazar" is a pseudonym anyway.

Other than that, those are all fine-sounding first-name suggestions.

Lance, since the next installment is right around the corner, maybe the best thing would be for you to just make an executive decision at this point, based on what you've seen from our contributions and on what strikes your own fancy.  I don't think you'd choose something that would stink!  :)

« on: November 13, 2005, 05:59 PM »
Findswoman has suggested something in the line of Jace Veridian (or possibly Joss).  I want to avoid "Meridian", Finds, only because it's a real word.

Fair enough... though "Lance" and "Quasar" (with an S) are also real words!  ;)

I don't mind sticking with Deak as his real first name if that's what people would prefer.  As for the backwards idea, though... I know it's a time-honored SW tradition and all, but it's always seemed rather unimaginative, a bit of a cop-out.  (Chewie, this is not directed at you personally at all -- just at the tradition in general.)  The resulting names always seem rather contrived, somehow.  Witness, for example, "Coleman Trebor."

But if we still want to keep elements of the name reversal, the maybe we could go with something like "Raza" for our real last name, as jedistyle suggests. It's not hard to pronounce, and is nice and simple while at the same time being just cool and unusual enough for our purposes: Deak Raza, Jace Raza, etc.

As for what to tell Crate, however...  There still is the possibility, remote or otherwise, that he could eventually find his way to Callie and mention that he met a guy named Deak in a helmet.  In other words, there's the possibility of him giving us away, whether he means to or not (and he probably wouldn't).  That's one reason I think a name other than Deak might be a good idea at this point, whether it's our real name or otherwise.  In any case, this is something we should keep in mind as we decide on his name.

All right, back to square one with the last name.  What do you all think of something like Viridian?  Does Joss Meridian (or Jace Viridian, or the either one w/ Meridian) sound all right for the charcter?  I think they have a nice sci-fi ring to them, & can see them making a really nice pair with Lance Quazar for when we actually do meet up with our uncle.

Anyone?

Customs Community and Group Projects / Re: Life after customizing?
« on: November 9, 2005, 10:08 AM »
this is just reminding me that i am not a normal woman (whether that is a good thing or a bad thing)  :P

Ah, but just what is a normal woman anyway?  Or a normal man? I bet none of us here really fit either category!  :)  That said, I guess I'm just not a normal woman, either.  Our hobby is, perhaps, just not a normal hobby.

Fortunately, I haven't ever really gotten much real grief from loved ones about it.  Teasing, however, is another manner.  My husband is a very teasy man, and also a very thrifty one, managing all the money in the household.  He has been known to tease mercilessly whenever I'm abt to spend money on customizing, or when yet another Zuckuss arrives in the mail.  (I don't really have all that many of them!  :p )  Fortunately, tho', we make enough (read: he makes enough) that it's not a financial strain.  Once in a while he'll balk if I select more than about three figures to buy.

In the end, though, he's very supportive of this hobby of mine.  He's never asked when I'm going to stop, and I don't plan to for a long time!

Only thing is that I have to take frequent, extended hiatuses because of the school year, such as right now.  I haven't customized anything  since the summer.  School is currently taking up all my time because I'm studying for oral exams.  But I always come back to the hobby as a special treat for the vacation periods.

My mom sort of knows about the hobby; she doesn't have muuch to say, but is perfectly supportive and all.  I have a whole lot of relatives and friends, though, who don't even know that I do this, and there's one or two who know and think it's kind of odd & different, but don't really mention it much.  It's unfortunately not something I can talk about with most of my real life friends -- just one or two.  Sometimes that depresses me, since it's something that gives me such joy.  But one gets used to it, as I'm sure all of us have!

Sure, it costs money -- as Darth Ripley pointed out, all hobbies do.  But I am drawn to it because it is such a creative hobby, and I love that feeling of completing something creative of your very own.  (Especially when it's wearing soft goods.  :) )

On the issue of a name... Is our Uncle Lance Quazar on our mom's side or our dad's side?  Or is that determined yet?  If the latter, we can be a Quazar too.  I was thinking along the lines of Joss Quazar, or Jace Quazar.  Even if we're not a Quazar, I like the names Joss & Jace; Joss Eisley, anyone?  Perhaps we're even hyphenated: Antilles-Quazar, Iblis-Quazar, Eisley-Quazar, etc.

Whether or not we choose to include the name Quazar in our name could have definite consequences for the story.  If we do, and we happen to tell our (real) name to someone who knows of our Uncle Lance, they would immediately be able to guess that we're related to him, and that could work either for us or against us.  With a non-Quazar name, they wouldn't necessarily be able to tell, of course.  But it all hinges on our Quazar's decisions on our hero's family tree.

Anyway, those are just some thoughts.  Loooking forward to hearing what the rest of you folks have to say!
