Saga Collection '06 / Re: Best/Worst of the TSC line so far
« on: April 3, 2006, 10:34 PM »
Bib Fortuna doesn't look so bad; well, okay, the character is far from a favorite and he's pretty ugly, but the figure looks to be a pretty good representation of him. About the only thing I really see wrong with him that could've been done better is the "Arrrgh!" headsculpt, but that doesn't really ruin a charachter like this. Actually, if I found one cheap I'd pick it up; I just haven't cared enough to pay $6-$7 to have a buddy for my Jabba.

And it's a heck of a lot better than the days of the screaming headsculpt on main charachters like Mace Windu and Padme Amidala ;)

BrentS was very friendly and good to deal with, and sent the figure very quickly. Smooth, great purchase, thanks!

Modern Classifieds / Re: Darth Slothus' for sale list
« on: April 2, 2006, 10:21 PM »
PM sent about a ROTS C3PO and POTF2 Captain Piett... $3 is an awesome deal for the ROTS figures by the way :)

I hope no one else is out to get that Anakin evolutions set in the next week and a half, because sadly I can't take advantage of the opportunity and buy it (yet). But if it stays there long enough I'll hopefully buy it too <3

Saga Collection '06 / Re: Best/Worst of the TSC line so far

I'll probably change this later.

Best: Boussh Leia, Carbonite Han (his articulation is lame, but his sculpting is good enough to make him one of my favorite Hans to look at, and with a little creativity he is playable)

Worst: Barada. A background flunky with reused POTF parts and bland articulation, no thanks.

And yes, I know no one anywhere agrees about Han ;) But his headsculpt's just so good! The rest of the sculpting's pretty nice, at that...

Star Wars Action Figures / Re: Mara Jade custom?
« on: April 2, 2006, 05:01 PM »
Wow! That head does look quite good for Mara- the expression is great, the facial structure is pretty good (not unlike the person who's closest to being the "official" portrayal of Mara- the one who posed for the trading cards), and the eyes are green! The hair would work good as-is too, but if I ever get good at sculpting and painting I might get adventurous in that department. If I do indeed make a custom Mara, I should definately find one of those!

A question though- I've never owned any of the smaller GI Joes. Do they use POTF2-like neckposts, with the small post and the disc at the bottom, or something different?

I was thinking the same thing about the gloves/arms- I need to find one that has a good grip for holding a lightsaber or blaster, though. Fortunately there's plenty of photo archives to help me find something that will work.

I want to make sure I don't go over $17 though, considering that at that point I could've bought a Hasbro Mara Jade for the same. One of these Scarlett figures can be found as low as $5.75 on eBay, so that's not too bad of a start; droid factory Padme seems to be kind of randomly priced on eBay so I'm not sure what I'd wind up paying- there are two auctions starting at $2, a british one that equates to about $10, $30 buy-it-nows... and I think I could get a Leia Collection figure for about $3 if I'm lucky. that makes $8.75 plus an unknown total for the Padme figure, although I would be getting a bunch of leftover fodder out of the deal, I suppose, as well. Perhaps this would be good stuff to add to my Wants list...

At the moment I'm watching a Mara Jade auction ending tonight at a thus-far good price. I'm fully anticipating a $10 price raise by the end, but on the off-chance I get lucky, I might be able to buy it and then I can move on to making a Jedi outfit Mara.

On a totally different tangent, while it'd be quite a ways off (I should read the books first to see if I even want to make one), it strikes me that the Padme Arena Escape head might make an excellent Admiral Daala, if it didn't look too weird that she constantly had her head leaning a bit...

Also, while I hadn't looked into Luminara before, Aayla Secura does look good for some generic purposes if you're skilled with molding and painting. I'll keep both of these figures in mind in future customizing.

Anyway, thank you very much! I don't know a lot about some lines such as GI Joe, so this kind of suggestion helps quite a bit!

EDIT: Another day, another loose Mara going for $15.08 + $2.80 S&H. I shall indeed pursue this custom...

Awesome! I'm sorry to have to say it though, but I'm not sure how soon I can get back to you on those. Is it okay if I wait until next weekend? I'll understand completely if you sell the figures elsewhere first, of course.

Err- one other question- what does LMK stand for?

I should point out that the items that are underlined, I am more likely to be able to make exceptions to get in a hurry. That is to say, for example, if someone were selling a VOTC Chewy I could afford or cheap Lando heads or something, I would try to buy them ASAP and override more other stuff to do so, whereas things like a Saga TIE fighter pilot might have to wait a little longer.

Sorry if this is a hassle :( Like I said, there should be a bit less of this sort of thing after next week's trip.

Ahh, my old POTF2 figures. Also known as "the majority of my present collection." :(

I say the card type to specify era; these are all loose of course, some with joint and paintwear.

Orange Card:
"Buff" Luke "Shwartzineggar" Skywalker (He's missing his grappling hook gun)
Luke Skywalker in Snowsp- err, X-Wing gear (why are the gloves and boots white and the suit so thickly padded, hmm?)
Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker (still one of my favorites; I got one with the darker vest and black cloak. He has high heels though...)
R2-D2
"Karate-wielding Superman" Han Solo
Han Solo in Carbonite
"Steroid Victim" Darth Vader
"Kevin Sorbo in Wookie Disguise" Chewbacca
C3PO
"Hangin' at the Gym" Lando Calrissian
Boba Fett (poor Fett; I lost his cape/braids and his antenna broke off :( )
Obi Wan "Ben" Kenobi
"Monkeyface" Leia Organa (actually, she came on a green card because I couldn't find her for the longest time and got a reprint later in the run)
Stormtrooper (one came on a Green Card actually) X2
TIE Fighter Pilot (don't remember the cards) X2

Green Card:
Lando Calrissian in General Gear (for some reason I like him, but... obviously he's a bit flawed, eh?)
Lando Calrissian in Skiff Guard Disguise
Han Solo in Endor Trenchcoat (blue pants version)
Han Solo in Hoth Gear
Luke Skywalker in Hoth Gear (still a favorite)
Luke Skywalker in Dagobah Fatigues
Luke Skywalker in Stormtrooper disguise (what possessed me to make a kitbash from this figure?...)
"Escape the Death Star" game Luke in Stormtrooper Disguise
"Escape the Death Star" game Darth Vader (with removeable helmet part, turning right wrist, and swiveling right elbow)
Grand Moff Tarkin
Jawas x4 (that is to say, 2 cards' worth, since they were 2-packs)
R5-D4 (I loved him for being R5-D4, but I somehow forgot the scene where Luke was starting to take him home, only to have the droid split in two as a giant missile launched from his core...)
Admiral Ackbar
Nien Nunb
EV9D9
Tusken Raider X2 (this is the only POTF2 figure I still have one of MOC actually; though the card's far from mint)
Weequay (Skiff Guard)
Emporer Palpatine (still one of the best sculpts of the evil old geezer, IMO, and great for the parts when he was standing)

Cinema Scenes:
Jedi Spirits (Anakin, Obi Wan, Yoda)

Vehicles:
Electronic X-Wing (the first one, not the FX one)
Luke's Landspeeder
The Millenium Falcon (I saved allowance for a few months <3 The stickers never made it all on and many are peeling off now. Fitting Han and Chewie in the cockpit was... interesting, and didn't happen much. General Lando dreams of ever sort of fitting. Even now, the cockpit is empty...)
Boba Fett's Slave I
Leia's Speeder Bike (includes a Leia Endor Gear figure)
Bogus Scout Trooper on Speeder Bike with this revving mechanism thing

I pretty much have everything I had, except a few broken lightsabers and lost weapons and of course the paintwear on the orange figures. That is, until I decided to decapitate poor Stormtrooper Luke... he will be avenged! Or at least replaced...

I've bought a few POTF and EU figures in recent times, but they shouldn't really be mixed with this list. My newer old figures are:

Han Solo in Bespin Gear (always wanted one, but never could find him in stores)
Luke Skywalker in Ceremonial Gear
Flashback Luke Skywalker (with suave moisture farmin' gear- he goes great with the Landspeeder)
EU Grand Admiral Thrawn (a definate favorite)
EU Dark Empire Leia Organa Solo (she came loose and incomplete, so no cloak unfortunately)

And ripe for the kitbashing:

Commtech Han Solo
"All New Likeness" Leia Organa
EU Dark Jedi Luke Skywalker (actually, I plan to give him another Luke head after stealing the current one, and keeping him in my collection as a Dark Jedi Luke thereafter)
A second Buff Luke

Yep, that's my collection... sans a small group of Prequel figures (actually ROTS Vader is displayed with my original trilogy figures right now), my Evolutions Clones/Sandtroopers (the majority's "oh wow more armybuilders" is my major improvement of course; I had no clones before I bought these!) some TSC figures, and two POTJ figures.

"You'll find I'm full of surprises!" *falls backward to the ground and drops weapon within the next few seconds*
"Impressive... most impressive."
"Really?"
"NNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"

:)

30th Anniversary Collection / Re: How big is your army?
« on: April 1, 2006, 01:00 AM »
You know the term "Army of One"? I've got it beat! Bwahahahahahah, and a mighty army it is. Two Episode II Evolutions "Grand Army of the Republic" Clone Troopers and Two Episode III "Fall of the Republic" Evolutions Clone Commanders, and I make the sentance as long as possible to make it sound bigger than it is. I deem it my "Handful of Figures in Army Disguise - With Long Sentence Action!"

So yeah, if I put all my Stormtroopers and all my Sandtroopers and all my Clonetroopers and all my Tie Fighter Pilots together, and generously include my POTF2 headless (for now) Luke in Stormtrooper disguise, POTF2 Speeder Bike with made-on Scoutrooper (it's the kind that had the revving thing unfortunately; I'd much rather have had the one with the seperate figure) my "Bend-em's" Emporer's Royal Guard- Incidentally I don't think two Chewbacca figures counts as a "wookie army"- I have 13 soldiers in my "Imperial Army." Maybe Thrawn whipped out sone old Clone armor sitting around the Mount Tantiss storehouse for his clone army?

That makes for this list:

POTF2 Stormtrooper x2
POTF2 Luke Skywalker in Stormtrooper Disguise sans head x1
POTF2 Tie Fighter Pilot x2
Phony Balony POTF2 Scout Trooper stuck to Speeder Bike x1
Evolutions Sandtrooper x2
Evolutions Clonetrooper x2
Evolutions Clone Commander x2

And I don't think the Bend-em's dude really counts ;)

But yay, I get to rival BabyJawa!

Thank you! I very much appreciate it.

Not to discourage, but you probably don't need to hurry much- I'm going on an out-of-town shopping trip in about a week and I'm not entirely sure how much money I'll have to left to spend, unfortunately. Although on the other hand I might come back with a good $20, who knows :)

In the worst case scenario that I have no money after next week, I should definately have some on April 18th if no sooner. Hopefully I won't have to wait that long though ><

But I'm definately interested in hearing what you've got for sale at any time, and will try to get back to you on some of it as soon as I can!

In my collecting and fledgling kitbashing I pretty much aim to do a piece at a time, usually filling in the gap that's most noticeable at the time. When reading the Thrawn trilogy I just had to run out and get a Thrawn figure, and paid $11 for a mint loose one with accessories- not a good price certainly, but he beats what a lot of EU figures seem to be going for. But I'm pretty happy with him and he adds something special to my collection I think :)

But of course, once you've got Thrawn, you need Joruus C'Baoth, right? And so on...

For another example, Lando is a pretty weak spot in my collection- it's a sad state when your best Lando figure is the POTF2 General Gear version! So I aim to buy some better ones and moreover to make a "Dark Force Rising"-type smuggler gear Lando.

And then when I find a piece that's really outstanding, I make exceptions to try to get it, as with getting my Dark Jedi Luke figure (for the head really) and now I'm trying to get my hands on a VTSC Han. I reaaaally hope I don't miss the line altogether as I did with the VOTC...

Customizing Tips and Tricks / Re: Painting Facial Hair?
« on: March 31, 2006, 10:18 PM »
Hmm... I dunno if this helps or not, but I did stubble on a (non-Star Wars) custom with apple barrel acrylic paint once, by dabbing on little spots with a toothpick and then scratching them off to little specks carefully. I used a pin to do some of the scratching and to apply a few tiny dots here and there also.

Of course, an obvious effect of this is that if you handle the figure's head much the stubble will "reduce" because the rest of it chips off too, but the stubble's stayed on the figure I did it on a good 2 years now.

These other methods might work a little better though, especially depending on the size of your figure. The figure I did this on was 1:6 scale (12"), so...

Modern Classifieds / Re: selling LOTS of custom fodder
« on: March 31, 2006, 08:50 PM »
Hmm, if they last long enough and I have the money I might look into this. Especially if admist the stuff I'd really use for fodder, I could get a Boba Fett or one of those repainted Falcon Mechanic Chewies out of the deal... heck, there's a lot of figures I don't have and wouldn't mind getting loose, accessory-less copies of.

And Imperial Officer fodder with hats- mmm. Snowtroopers...

But I'll have to come up with a un-spoken for $20 first; a few at a time I could do, but I understand the need to not ship off tons of seperate figures, too.

We'll see, I suppose...

Star Wars Action Figures / Mara Jade custom?
« on: March 31, 2006, 04:48 PM »
Well, watching yet another, loose at that, Mara Jade auction inexplicably rise to $17 I find myself revisiting the idea of giving up on buying one and trying to make my own instead. The sculpting looks pretty good, but on the other hand she's still a POTF2 figure with the "basic" articulation that entails.

So, the question is what to make her from? Eventually I'd planned to make a "Jedi" gear Mara as well, but I really want one with a Thrawn-trilogy type outfit (or, if that fails, perhaps a "Mysteries of the Sith" outfit or something- just something that would make sense for a smuggling outfit and if it matched with an existing official design that'd be cooler, really) as well. I don't have any good parts to use to this effect, so I'm trying to figure out what I would buy (and if it would ultimately beat the $17-$25 "real deal").

Anyway, I'm kind of wondeirng if anyone had some suggestions in this area. The legs and torso from a Saga "Droid Factory Chase" Padme might be good? As for a head, I really don't know what would work best. POTF2/SOTE Boussh Disguise Leia looks nothing like Carrie Fisher and has the right expression (and might look good with standing next to a figure with a Dark Jedi Luke head) but I'm not sure about those giant lips she seems to have. A Saga "Arena Escape" Padme head might work; although I don't really know if I like the way the head seems to 'lean', the features are about right and she's got an angry look appropriate to Mara during the Thrawn Trilogy.

Maybe some weird figures I haven't thought of/don't know much about would work? Or maybe there's a good head from a non-Star Wars line figure I could use?

Also, if anyone has some experience making a Mara Jade custom themselves, I'd love to hear some details on it!

Sorry for the vague and wishy-washy post by the way :( Any help/suggestions at all would be greatly appreciated, though.

"Plug For WTB List in Offhand Remark Disguise": I am still interested, BTW, in buying a Mara Jade loose or a Mara Jade head even, if anyone has one...

This line is good news to me for one reason: it's another chance at the ROTS Chewie! I missed him the first time, and as far as I can tell he looks pretty good with his ball-jointed shoulders, elbows, turning wrist, and ball-joint knees, plus he has a nice bowcaster. Unless the action feature somehow ruins the articulation or something?...

Not that he's any replacement for a VOTC Chewie, but it'd be good to have an ROTS/ANH/ESB-passable version as well.

If I buy him and discover I've accidentally purchased the "Poodoo in Chewbacca Disguise" action figure, at least I got a nice bowcaster out of the deal.

When is this line coming out, though? Someone posted and said "after the Saga waves"?...

For my 2 round pieces of copper that probably don't have wheat on the backside, though, C3PO totally should've been reprinted in this line...

The Prequel Trilogy / Re: Top 25 Worst Sequels Ever Made
« on: March 28, 2006, 01:45 PM »
Well, The Phantom Menace is my least favorite of the six movies, but I don't think it was altogether bad certainly. Overall I think of it as a "good" movie in a "great" series, if that makes sense.

Qui-gon's charachter added a lot to the movie, and the movie also sported Ewan McGregor's first performance as Obi Wan, which has always been (to my thinking) very appropriate and well-done. Yoda, while looking a bit weird and inconsistant with other movies, was overall well done, as was Mace Windu's cryptic role.

Anakin is a mixed bag really. The kid seems overenthusiastic, but on the other hand he probably would be in these situations. I don't think the little actor was bad for the part at all, as he does pretty good with the bulk of what the part has him do and pretty well in his one threatening moment (his little "I'm a person" speech). However his lines were often a bit cheesy, with things like the reference, "let's try spinning, that's a good trick!" (although it gives me this great image in ANH of Vader sitting in his cockpit grumbling, "Let's not try spinning, that's a crappy trick")

Yes, JarJar is the real Menace of the movie, but there's good stuff to be had if you can look past him. Not that the other gungans really helped that much either, but still...

Palpatine was awesome in this movie, as well. Very slimy, but not overdone at all. I have to cringe a bit when he slaps Ani on the back and says "We'll watch your career with great interest" and a smirk on his face!

Padme wasn't bad either, and she comes off a good mixture of angry but not 100% confident of her abilities.

The politics were a bit stodgy and tended to make the entire plotline of Naboo vs. the Trade Federation a little more boring than it should've been, but the politics have their good moments too, especially where Palpatine is concerned. The more you know about him when you watch this movie, the more you shake your head as he subtlely uses everyone and everything at his disposal.

So it's not really a bad movie, just nothing to get as worked up about as the others to me. But it certainly has it's strengths to back up it's weaknesses.

The Prequel Trilogy / Re: ROTS Deleted Scenes
« on: March 28, 2006, 01:34 PM »
I totally agree on the Qui-Gon scene! They went so far as to include his voiceover in AOTC, then cut or didn't complete the sequence in ROTS... I'm not sure how much sense the storyline would've made, but there was definately a hole there in the movie.

I'd like to see Yoda land on Dagobah, but I can also agree about saving a surprise for the OT. Originally in ESB it's pretty much a surprise when this little green dude creeps up on Luke eating dinner, and only after acting all pious and saying he's looking for a "great warrior" does he- and the audience- realize that he's actually talking to Yoda. So in a roundabout way for new viewers who decided to take the I-VI route, there would at least be some surprise to it if they hadn't already seen Dagobah.

Personally, I was a little surprised Tarkin didn't have any lines given the actor they chose for the part (if you watched Farscape and know who that is, then I think you know what I mean)- he could've been a dead ringer I think. Was it always planned that he only had the one walk-on cameo?

Now that the DVD is out- I've tried to look it up but with no success, and don't yet own it- what deleted scenes are included on it?
