Title: Best vintage deals you've gotten
Post by: CorranHorn on September 24, 2003, 09:22 PM
I couldn't find a thread talkin about this so I thought I would bring it up. What are some of the greatest vintage deals you've gotten over the years, something to give us hope for the future. There was a time when I could get a great deal on something on ebay almost everyday, now i find it quite hard, but letsee what you've gotten that could be deemed a "greal deal!"

Here's some for me...

1.) Loose, mint, and complete (LMC) blue saber Jedi Luke for $15 at a time when this guy was going for $50 easy in that condition
2.) Loose, near-mint and complete w/ box Death Star Space Station at of all things a baseball card convention. EDIT: hehe oops forgot to mention I got the set for $50.
3.) All 3 POTF mini-rigs, LMC for $30 in 2 seperate deals on ebay
4.) 12 LMC figs for $70 that equated in getting me a great EV-9D9 and Green snake Yoda for less than $6 a piece!

$3.50 each for the following loose figures:
Blue Snaggletooth
Anakin Skywalker

Snag was missing his blaster and was in a bit of a rough shape. Anakin was as mint as the day he came off the card (or out of the bag, whatever).
I found them at an antigue store around 1994 when my parents were looking for door hinges. Strangest find I've ever had.

Hello fellas.  I have not posted in a while, but though I'd give an update.  21 figures to go to complete my vintage collection.  I just got these today.

Biker Scout (complete)
C-3PO (removable limbs) (complete)
Chief Chirpa (complete)
Cloud Car Pilot (complete)
EV-9D9 (complete)
Han Solo (small head)(complete)
Imperial Dignitary (complete)
Luke Skywalker (Jedi)(complete))
Princess Leia (complete)
Princess Leia (Bespin)(complete)
Princess Leia (Hoth)(missing weapon)
R2-D2 (complete)
R2-D2 (sensorscope) (complete)
Tusken Raider (complete)
Yoda (complete)

I bought them off a board where the seller had no feedback, and was concerned because I had to send a money order.  For the price, I decided to take the risk to try to get closer to completing my collection.  The leia gun's, cc communicator, and other weapons...all vintage!  Figures in A+ condition.

All were in excellent condition.  The deal was $3 each figure + shipping!!!

This one worked out big time!

Dang!! You got an Imperial Dignitary for $3????

Did the guy not know what he had?

how was the condition on them.  It would be great to see some pics of these.

Just tried it & got the same thing! Since you are the owner of the album, you can access it but I cannot.
Maybe try posting the URL for the picture instead of the album.  :-\

Just right click on the picture & go to properties & you will see the URL addy, unless webshots has the link for the picture on the page it is on!

Dale,

I just intend to go after the more known variations, snap cape Jedi Luke, White teeth Lando, Hair variations.

I'll leave the other variants to the others at this time!

I'd love to see pic's of your collections sometime.

I got home to a few surprises...
Minty Mint Amanaman and Han in Carbonite for $115
Yak Face for about $100 worth of stuff in trade

7 to go to complete my loose vintage collection of "100."

Not particularly great deals, but three figures I have been hoping to nab for quite some time.

From what I've seen lately, the three most expensive of the bunch :o  I've been watching a lot of last 17 auctions of late.  I missed a few great deals about 2 weeks ago (again with the family, all the right thing to do, but damn, why are the auctions I watch always $15 higher per item than the ones I watch) but this week things have been steep.  I did pick up a dignitary this week for $32 shipped, so that was pretty nice.  My lot with both Anakin and Luke Stormtrooper was a treat: lots of weapons, upgrades and a ship I may turn around and sell.

Amanaman complete has been averaging well over $75 of late.  Han has been fairly goofy as well, $55+ so a very nice deal for you, especially considering the condition (were the coins included?).  Yak is easy over $100 with no problem.

This week I'm watching for the A-wing pilot, Imperial gunner but Luke Poncho is pretty sparse this week, going for well over $40 last week - too steep for me.

Brent,

The "Last 17" have definetely gone up in value this week.  For example a Yak loose for $147.50:

POTF Yak Face C9.5++ MINT Complete!  (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?MfcISAPICommand=ViewItem&item=3193471381)

I wonder if the OTC Figures are sparking peoples interest or the DVD release, probably both.

I am stoked!  I bet that darn R2 will be a toughy for me in collector condition.

Good luck on the auctions Brent!

best deal i got on vintage stuff was back around 97 - 98, when i first discoverd the magical place that was ebay. for about $80 - including shipping - i got just about every vintage figure (minus the last 17) - i think it was about 65 - plus i got a dewback, tie fighter, x-wing, death star playset, star destroyer playset, darth vader tie fighter, tauntaun, landspeeder, and a bunch of other stuff. sure, the figures had no weapons, and some of them were in played with condition, and some of the ships and playsets were incomplete - but it got me started (and almost finished) with my vintage collectoin  :D

Gah! :o  Don't say this.  I'm down to needing 26 figures.  Some easy but some annoying, the last thing I need is people getting excited.

I didn't contemplate the re-release of the DVD's when I started into this.  I was hoping the summer would be pretty slow and values would stay low.  That may not be the case though, either with vintage or modern stuff.  I know for sure I watch values fall for modern stuff pretty much from 3 months post Episode II.

I've got prices in mind for most of the figs, just not quite winning everything I want to right now :-\  Had my first experience of losing to e-snipe today.  Tragic.

almost forgot, about 3 years ago one of my employees told me he had a box of star wars figures in his basement from when he was a kid, and asked me if i wanted them. i said, sure, why not? probably nothing spectacular, but i'll trade them off, use them for customs, or whatever. he came in the next day with a bag full of about 20 figures. i took a quick glance in the bag, and saw random, common figures - luke bespin, han hoth, chewbacca, vader, etc. etc. i asked him how much he wanted for them, and he told me nothing. i bought him lunch that day anyway, and we called it even.

when i got home that night, i dumped the bag out and started going through the figures. nothing spectacular, until my eyes see a blue snaggletooth and a death star gunner  :o

both were incomplete and in slightly played with condition, but for about $10 i couldn't complain.

Ask Bertie,
Welcome.

jokabofe,
Nice story, thanks for sharing.  Do you have a complete set of loose figures or do you just dabble in the vintage line?  If my memory serves me correctly I believe your primary focus is the modern line.

Back in the old days... probably '90/'91, from a toy dealer in town… funny thing is- when he approached me with it he seemed to think I wouldn't want it and really talked up a pitch to move it. Also snatched a C-10 carded Yak from him (his last one out of a case from Australia) for $140, but me thinks the R2 was the sweeter prize.

Here's a recent one:
4th of July weeekend-hit the local flea market at the cottage and found a $10 loose vintage 12" 3PO excellent condition.  Also, grabbed a carded NM ROTJ Nien Nunb for $20-great thing was it had the japanese sticker on the back of the card (65back).

2 vintage loose in M/NM condition for $2ea.

Not too shabby.

Back in in 1997 I found a c8.5 Barada at a flea market, I bought it for half-a-dollar. It was missing the weapon but still cheap, later got his weapon. Traded it for a Han Solo (Carbonite).

This meens I actually got a vintage Han Carbonite for half-a-dollar.

Well what a crap deal this was. Seller said he sent the book out & I never received it. Exchanged a few emails with him & he said he sent another book out. Well 3 months have gone by & nothing!   (http://www.cheesebuerger.de/smilies/boese/7.gif)

He gave me a positive feedback a few days after I won & now I have had no choice but to leave him a negative. ******* ******* stole my $48.  (http://www.cheesebuerger.de/smilies/boese/1.gif)  (http://www.cheesebuerger.de/smilies/boese/31.gif)

I got a great deal a few weeks ago. My aunt dropped off some figures at my new apartment one day. They were:

Blue Snaggletooth, my 2nd one
Biker Scout, which I didn't have yet
And a couple Galoob ST:TNG figures, Riker and Tasha Yar

The best part? They were FREE. I **** you not, FREE!!

My 1st Blue Snaggletooth I got for $3.50. The next was free. Can't beat that in this day and age.

Very nice scores. Yeah, that hatch gun is going to be tough, keep an eye out though, ya never know.

Does the wind up R2 still work? Looks to be in great shape.  8)

Yes sir, perfectly ;D!

The guy also had a bagged one for $95.00 USD, the only problem was that both legs were yellow, and that would bother me.

Super, just missing the front stickers but hey, not bad at all. Its sure lots of fun watching him walk.   ;D

This R2 was missing both the front & back stickers & it went for more than what you paid.

$60 is a very good price.  A local guy sold one much more yellow with no stickers locally about the same time I picked mine up.  His sold around $70, so nice deal.   :)

Brent and Dale,

Thanks for the reassurance.

The Takara R2 is a keeper, I am going to sell the other two pieces as I got home and can't find a proper place to display them :(.

$20 USD, this is the light brown version, I could not find any completed auctions at the time, what does this usually run?  Which version is harder, this or the dark brown hair version?

$20 is good.  Paint looks nice.  I paid around the same for mine.  No idea about light or brown hair, not going to care :-X  The range for brown haired Luke farmboy is from $15-40 from what I've seen.

Brent,

Thanks, so where are you at with your vintage collection?  Do you still need figure / accessories?  Are you going after variations?

Very nice Luke Matt. I'm not sure which is version is harder to get. According to the RS archive, the light hair is a Europe release.

Hi Matt,
sorry for not responding sooner, shortly after you posting that question we lost the internet connection at home for about 4 days, so I kind of forgot to answer this question.  I was just looking at your collection pics and was reminded about it.

I think I'm done except for a vinyl cape Jawa and some accessories.  A weapon or two here and there.  To be honest, I've really lapsed in paying attention to vintage since I got my Warok and blue snag.

As far as variations go, what I think I need right now (from memory, not doing this post at home, so not positive) is a blue smock Ugnaught, small head Han Solo and that might be about it.  I've picked up both grey and white hair ben, brown haired Luke (farmboy and Bespin), collar/no collar Bespin Leia and a few others.  I'm sure Dale will poke his nose in and list about 75 other variations I could own, like different biker scout helmets or some other nonsense :P

For weapons I need a few standard Han blasters, probably one more Leia blaster, axe for a stoopid Ewok and that's about it.  Just haven't been really paying attention for a while.

All my figures are in pretty nice shape.  I wouldn't mind improving a few but it's hard to do without avoiding the risk of a poor grading on ebay.  If I'm going to pay the bucks for an upgrade, I really, really want it to be an improvement.  Probably my worst figure is Chewbacca - it seems everyone had one and everyone really liked playing with it.  Strange, I never thought he would give me difficulty.  I do have the green limbs version as well and would like to pick up a green bowcaster as well.

I'll have to go through the collection around Christmas to check on what's missing and what needs upgrading.  I know the last 17 are all very nice, save for that accursed arm on EV-9D9.  It stays on fine, but knowing it comes off bugs me.  Most of the rest are nice from memory but I know once I look really closely, some will need to be upgraded.  Would love to find some thrashed cards for relatively cheap to replace them.

Biggest pain is running out of room to display stuff.  I'm still very big into modern stuff so way too much in storage :-\  Not sure what I want to do with future stuff in the vinty line.  I was thinking trilogo, but think I've talked myself out of it for the most part, largely due to those really expensive pieces that will prevent a complete collection.  Always contemplate a full 12 back collection on somewhat downgraded cards but even that would be quite pricey.

Unlike most people I don't have a really strong, driving attachment with nostalgia associated with the vintage line.  I appreciate the origins of the toys and now that I own them, I am extremely pleased with them.  But I just don't generate any childhood memories from them - I was just on the wrong side of 13 for the toys to be meaningful to me.  So finding packaging, carded, vehicles etc is cool, but not that important.  Blasphemy, I know.

BTW, I have a spare Warok, I think I read in your collection thread you need one?  If so, drop me a PM.  I don't remember how complete it is, so you might end up chasing something on it but I know it has the cowl and I believe the bow as well.  It might be missing the satchel thingy off his (her?) hip but I'll have to check.  I'm away on holidays starting this Friday, so nothing will happen quick, but if you're interested, LMK.

Yeah, best to go to the Vinyl Jawa at those prices. I know I got my Hollow Tusken from England & the seller had a few loose regular Tuskens, I just spotted the hollow tubes & took the chance that it would be the one he would send me, that chance paid off.    8)

Exactly what I'm hoping.  Spot one in a lot and go from there.  So long as the figure is fine, I can find another cape and weapon down the road and save some money in the long run.  Patience.  Just like I need to exercise for the Droids droids.  Geez, my curse continues as prices shoot up ::)

You know i have a bunch of Tusken Raiders packed up with all my figures and I have no idea which versiuon sI have. I should really look because I have all the variant sthat I think I want but if I dont have this one, I think I may actually go after it. I kind of hope that I dont have it because then I can have a vintage item that I can go after. I have not bought a vintage figure in so long :(

I got a nicely boxed B-Wing for $40 one year at the local Toy Show...  A woman was selling boxed Vinty Star Wars for very cheap.  Had I had more $ at the time I'd have walked out with at least a dozen vintage ships in mint boxes for well under their usual costs...  :(

Sucks to be poor sometimes.  The B-Wing was very appreciated though to me.  There was a Y-Wing I wish I could've afforded though too, for the same price.  Mintest boxes in history too, with all inserts and no stickers applied.  Actually I think the tape just faded off them over the years.

I never got the story why she was selling it all...  I dunno why she'd have had all that mint stuff for so cheap.  Oh well.

To this point I got an imperial gunner for $20 w/o gun from a collectors shop and I think I got a decent deal on (all loose) a Yak Face, Imperial Dignatary, A-wing pilot, Imperial Gunner, pristine Y-wing, Falcon, Snow Speeder, Ewok Glider, Ewok catapult, Imperial Troop Trasport, 2 Endor Forest Ranger mini-rigs, desert skimmer and about 15 misc non POTF figures with accessories for $300.

Last year, I got several pretty good deals on figures.

I picked up on eBay an EV9D9 and Barada w/ weapon for $30.  I don't remember if the auction was mislisted or something, but I just got lucky.

I managed to win Amanaman in two auctions in the same night, each I won for $40.  I ended up trading one for an A wing pilot.

I also picked up an ESB 41 back Bespin Han in probably C7 shape for $30.

I also got a number of deals on several Ep I figures near the end of the year.

I wish. :P I still need Ev9d9 and Luke Stormie. A good friend of mine is going to give me a Luke Stormie whenever he finds it on one of his trips home, and the Ev9d9 I might pick up at Comi-com this year. After that, I think I have to find the proper blasters for a POTF figure or two.

In reality, the best deal I ever got was the a near complete set of figures, save for POTF and a few from the previous wave, most of the ships and playsets, save for the vintage At-At, shuttle and anything from ROTJ, all for free. In other words, my childhood collection. ;D

the best deal i would say i have gotten was palitoy rotj farmboy luke, tri vader, tri chewy and tri r2 with scope  all for $37.  they all had smashed bubbles and r2 has a big chunk of the pic torn off, but you can't beat the price for 4 major characters carded.

Update: Okay, I looked it(the falcon) over tonite what it came with was the 2 pieces that hold up the entry hatch, the secret smuggler's hatch piece, a dejarik table, an upper gun turret(both pieces), some piece shaped like t that I don't know what goes to, some kinda cargo box-looks like a scanning crew box-that I dunno where it goes, and it looks like some one took a black "disco" bead and tied it to a string to make a training remote. The cockpit includes the clear plastic insert piece. all the landing gear are there, and the antenna assembly(both pieces).
Aside from the fact that it is an off-white color it seems to be in good shape, stickers and all.

*anyone know if it's missing anything?*

I think the cargo box you refer to is actually the "power supply" to the Tri-pod Laser Cannon used by the snowtroopers.

The piece that is shaped like a "t" might go on top of the Rebel Transport, but without further description,i might be off on that.

A lot with 16 vintage figs including a ROTJ carded fett, POTF han carbonite, imperial dignitary, POTF jawa, ESB chewbacca and a bunch of others all for about $30 per figure

Also got a carded ESB fett for $80 about 7-8 years ago.

Bought a few local peoples collections and got things like some ESB carded figs, blue snaggletooth, almost all of the last 17

No, it's grey/not black, 1/3 the size of the snowtroopers tripod cannon

I do have the rebel transports' T-shaped gun/Ion cannon? So I know it's not that, no-this piece is flat and resembles 2 footpedals and is grey, not black like the rebel transport's piece. However, it doesn't seem to fit to the gun turret chair....Huh...?

Surprisingly the 'disco ball' I thought someone added actually looks like the one in DSJ's reference link so it's looks like I'm only short the support arm for luke's traing ball and it would be a complete set.

Sounds like you have a piece of the Scout Walker, the breastplate. This piece would go under the main body of the walker. I tried to find a decent pic, I could only find the one below on short notice. The piece I'm referring to is the darker grey piece.
