So like does anyone own a copy of this famous Christmas Holiday Special. :o
-
I don't know anyone who has it. If you did have it would you actually tell people? ;)
-
I'd just tell them not to watch it.
-
I don't own a copy, wouldn't recommend anyone seek out a copy and waste your time watching said copy.
There a couple of places on-line where you can download this abomination...I won't say where though ;)
-
I've never actually seen it. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. :)
-
I was lucky enough to see it on TV when it aired. ;)
-
At least seeing it when it aired, you forget lot's.
I downloaded it & watched it.
All I can say is (http://adwoff.com/ubb/graemlins/bigbarf.gif)
My life has not been the same since. ;D
-
Why would someone choose to watch it. Didn't anyone you know warn you? ;D ;)
-
Yes. I was warned but I try to collect anything Star Wars related if if it is tacky. ;) ;D
-
Collecting it is one thing. Actually viewing it is another. ;)
-
At least you get a good look at Snaggletooth.

I got a copy over Xmas.
Like DSJ I have to have anything SW
I thought I remembered it from my childhood but I blocked out the painful parts. It was still neat to see again. Hey I was drinking. :P

I picked up a copy of this off of eBay a couple years back. For the $10-$15 that I paid for it, I'd say it was well worth it! This show is a nostalgic treasure of years past - true 70's in all it's glory. No Star Wars video library would be complete without one!
But, with that said, from a Star Wars standpoint, I must point out that this is a complete and total abomination. An atrocity of monumental proportions. It's like watching a train wreck, or the freak show at the circus. You never look at some of your favorite Trilogy characters the same again! From the very beginning, your jaw just drops open, as you sit and wonder how in the hell this show ever got produced and released on network TV. What was George thinking when he signed off on this?!? Absolutely unbelievable...
There are a couple of redeeming points to the Holiday Special though (kinda). There's the interesting Boba Fett cartoon, with his first ever appearance anywhere in the SW Saga. Then there's also the Cantina scene... Sure, it's more than frightening to see one of the Golden Girls filling in for Wuher behind the bar, and leading the entire Cantina alien gang in a wonderous song and dance number. But if you consider the fact that you barely got a glimpse of most of these aliens in ANH, you'll perhaps enjoy seeing them up close and personal, in much greater detail throughout this extended scene. Granted they're singing and dancing, but from a reference standpoint, this scene is a customizers dream!
The whole show is just freakishly bizarre. You'll never be the same after watching it, but it's so far out there that it's almost worth watching just for the pure shock value (similar to the recent Anna Nicole show).
If any of you do wind up getting a copy and watching it, listen to me when I tell you that no matter what, it will be even worse than you ever imagined - despite all the terrible things that you've already heard about it. It was the most difficult hour or two of my life watching this thing... But I'm glad that I did, 'cause at least I now know where my POTJ Zutton comes from!
-
I want to see it again.. I downloaded it once, but very bad quality... I sure want s to see it, and Carre fisher sings better then my sis so... ;D
-
For the love of Star wars. Noooooooooooooooooooo!
Star Wars Holiday Special TV Script (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3318463400&category=18840)
-
I actually saw this when I was kid. All I remember is a scene with chewys' family. I was starting to wonder if it was just a dream. I'm glad I finally know that it was for real.
But judging from he previous posts maybe it was a nightmare. ;D
-
My recommendation for those who might choose to watch this sometime in the future, is to KEEP YOUR EYES CLOSED at all times! And put some earplugs in too!
If you do just those two things, you'll probably enjoy the Holiday Special more, as well as keeping your lofty opinion of the original trilogy intact! 8)

Can someone hook a brother up with a DVD copy???

Can someone hook a brother up with a DVD copy???
Its not available on DVD. You can download a version of it of the net. Use Kazalite, WinMX or any other download program. Mine was in Zip form & the flick will be a little grainy. If you have a CD Burner, then you can burn it off & store it away for many, many years. ;D

I hate to sound dumb, but I still haven't been able to install Kazaalite properly.

Have you tried WinMX? WinMX Download (http://www.winmx.com/)
-
Nope. Does it have spyware, or any downsides???

Nope. Does it have spyware, or any downsides???
All those programs have spyware. They'll install other misc programs on your computer without you even knowing about it. I personally use Kazaa. If there's something I want I make a list of items. After the list hits 3 items I then install the program, download what I need, and then uninstall Kazaa. I know that program is spyware, but it also installs something called SaveNow. I don't have a clue what that program does, but it installs without my approval... which can't be good.
-
A majority of Nucleus file share programs have Spyware. SaveNow is an advertising Pop-Up that will drive you crazy as with others. These can be eliminated from your PC.
Ad-aware 6.0 can do the job but I DO NOT recommend it.
I use Spybot & highly recommend it. Please follow this links that I helped with over at GH. They were very happy with the results.
Help! I've picked up a nasty parasite! (http://www.galactichunter.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=TOR&Number=32543&page=1&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1)
New pop-ups? (http://www.galactichunter.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=TOR&Number=33231&Forum=All_Forums&Words=spybot&Match=Entire%20Phrase&Searchpage=0&Limit=25&Old=allposts&Main=33223&Search=true#Post33231)
Best of all, Spybot is free. ;)

Jared and I just picked up a cool DVD at the Wizard World L.A. convention with a whole slew of Star Wars stuff on it, including the Holiday Special (in great quality). Check out this sweet custom cover Jared's put together for our DVD, which is based on the original TV guide advertisement for the show:

-
As much as I hate the flick, that cover looks nice. You say the DVD is in great quality! 8) Now I wish I had a copy. :-\
-
I want one. The cover looks very good. I have the special on VHS and it sucks but I am still a completist with the shows, commericals, specials and all that
-
Say what? No matter how bad this was, I still would like a copy that is somewhat viewable. Out of the 5-6 boots I have had, not one has even decent quality. This has to be some kind of mistake or typho. Here is is though:
http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/sr=8-2/qid=1125403107/ref=sr_8_2/601-4848906-4244917?%5Fencoding=UTF8&asin=B00005JOIP
If this does turn out to be the real deal, then Lucas has been sucked up by all the commercialization in our money controlled world. I mean he has even talked trash about this crap.
-
I can't decide if this is funny or pathetic....
Check out Jeff's next post...

I wouldn't get your hopes up too high...
This was originally posted on Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00005JOIP/qid=1125071576/sr=8-9/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i3_xgl74/104-0850337-5395937?v=glance&s=dvd&n=507846) earlier this month.
It is just a polling gimmick that was inserted onto Amazon by a third party. This type of Amazon poll is used by Amazon to try to force studios to release things on DVD!
"Availability: NOT YET RELEASED: The studio is currently not producing this title on DVD, but to be notified when it is available, enter your e-mail address at right. You'll also be voting for this release; we'll let the studio know how many customers are waiting for this title."
The only reason it is on Target.com is because Amazon handles all of their Media (Books/Movies/DVD) since Target is an Amazon.com partner!

Did anyone else notice the blurb on Rebelscum:
Holiday Special DVD?
Jeremy: Several collecting websites are reporting that Target are taking pre-orders on a Star Wars Holiday Special DVD - click through for updated information.
And when you click Full Report:
Holiday Special DVD?
Posted by Jeremy on August 26, 2005:
The source of this news is Amazon.com whose own order page states:
Availability: NOT YET RELEASED: The studio is currently not producing this title on DVD, but to be notified when it is available, enter your e-mail address at right. You'll also be voting for this release; we'll let the studio know how many customers are waiting for this title.
This is simply a polling tactic to scope out the demand for a title, and is in no way indicative of a change in Lucasfilm's position on this masterpiece.
Way to get my hopes up, dummy. When you get updated information in a story that's potentially this big, you update the blurb TOO. ****. ::)
-
In the course of living in LA and working in the film industry, you tend to run into all kinds of people from the grates to the important unknowns. Last night, while at a Writers Guild function, I had the dubious honor of meeting the writer of the SW Holiday Special. :P
-
I hope this **** never washes across a kid's eyes ever again. :P
They would be tramitized like some kid's in the 70's. ;)
-
Just remember, that was the first look we got at Boba Fett. Granted, that probably doesn't make up for Carrie Fisher trying to sing, but hey, I'm trying to focus on the positive!
-
That was the only cool part. Lucas sould put that on the DVD, minus the Lumpy parts. Either that or do new animation for it & have the old voice work.
-
To me by far the worst part was Bea Arthur singing... or maybe Lumpy's visions of some disco lady. Both parts sucked utterly.
So did trying to mix Harvey Korman with Star Wars in any way other than making him some jackass of an imperial officer. If they did that, it might've worked, but they attempted no such intelligent satire.
As it is... Harrison Ford tries to not look like the fool he feels like... Mark Hamill was clearly on crack during most of his scenes (way too enthusiastic), and the makeup he has is terrible even if this was shortly post-car wreck... and Carrie Fisher looks embarassed to be a part of the whole thing, probably the catalyst for mostly quitting acting later on. Peter Mayhew and Anthony Daniels are glad to have jobs and glad no one sees their faces, and Kenny Baker might not've been involved- he isn't credited at any rate.
Then, we've got Chewie's family, who are all sappy and ridiculous. The costumes were surprisingly decent for a production of this kind, but they still weren't selling it with their cheesy plot and lack of any examples but visual ones. Chewie worked because he had a translator handy most of the time (Han or 3PO) to respond to him; 15 minutes of Wookies trying to get ideas across to a viewer by actions doesn't work.
Then there's this variety show crap mixed in that doesn't belong anywhere near Star Wars... Jefferson Starship's least impressive performance ever, Bea Arthur of Maude/the Golden Girls fame who should never ever try to sing, Harvey Korman of various movies- Blazing Saddles comes to mind- trying to make bad advertising jokes, and that middle-aged guy all the fans of the holiday special like who might've been okay if he didn't make more bad jokes and sales pitches.
Then there's the Empire who's so incompetent it's funny. Vader's one line is so general purpose one expects they got James Earl Jones to drop by and do one line long before they got anything written, the imperial officers all stand around making wry comments, faces, and not paying good attention, and the Stormtroopers fail at the simple art of wrestling/bear hugging skinny smugglers. No wonder Dak thought he could take the whole empire on himself- he could've if he'd attempted a couple years earlier.
Then there's the cartoon, which I wanted to like, but I have to say that's one of the ugliest art styles I've ever seen! I'm sorry. Also, Boba Fett is completely incompetent; if he hadn't halfway informed the rebels of his plan the moment they showed up and left clues everywhere for them to follow, he might've gotten away with it! The greatest bounty hunter ever; he fails to defeat a critical group of Rebels under Vader's payroll because he screws around, tells them most of his plan, and lets them figure the rest out- then turns and runs when they do rather than, y'know, shooting them- and then he finds the Falcon, tattles, loiters around Cloud City, runs away when the rebels come after him again, then when he actually has to fight, his gun gets cut in half and a jetpack malfunction launches him to his death/a few years trapped in the Sarlacc before he somehow escapes. Maybe they sent Luke/Leia/Han/Chewie/the droids any combination in after him and it enabled him to run away again.
Sorry :P I like Boba Fett, but you have to admit it is a little silly. Also, the cartoon is really pretty enjoyable, and definatly the best material in the Holiday Special by quite a bit.
Also, my negative dialogue on this subject is because I had a ball watching it (even if it was a terrible quality internet download- not that I expect DVDs to be loads better, but mine had a tiny resolution/filesize). It's like, MST3K-worthy.
-
Don't you mean to switch Mark & carrie around. Carrie REALLY looked like she was on dope or crack or something. ;)
-
They both were, probably, to escape the pain of actually shooting the production.
-
I wish this would actually get released, Regardless of how bad it is, it is still part of the history of Star Wars. The cartoon (the best part) deserves to be released. I still have a soft spot for the Wookie family, wishing we could get a box set of them. A release would help that along i think.
-
I agree with they should bring this out, heck they brought out the Phantom Menace, lol.

Surely you don't mean the bronze or copper Roman coin valued at 1/16 of a denarius? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/As_%28coin%29) ??? I can't imagine that would be satisfying.

But surely that makes it money well spent. ;)

I'm not sure my parents and grandparents will feel the same, but I appreciate the vote of confidence. :P

I just downloaded this small screen masterpiece to my iPod Classic. Thank God for Google Video. Now I can celebrate Life Day even while on the road!
-
How's the quality Reid? I'm tempted to do this even though I've never downloaded video to my iPod.
-
I have never seen the Holiday special. I'm really tempted to pick up a bootleg copy just to get a good laugh, or good cry in over it.
-
Okay, I clicked through google videos last night and started watching this. I couldn't decide if I was embarassed or what with watching it. I never made it through the whole thing. I watched the first 10 minutes and lost it. I would just fast forward and watch bits and pieces. Got to the cartoon and decided I would go back and watch it later. I still don't know what happened in what I was watching and I can't say I'm really sad for not having watched it.
-
I think making a Star wars fan sit through the entire special is some sort of right of passage....you just have to do it if you're a fan. ;)
-
How many ppl have seen the special? if you dont no what it is then im sorry. another question. how many ppl have it on tape. ;)
-
LOL...RS has their annual April Fool's Joke up and it's a cruel one. Holiday Special on Blu-Ray indeed!
Harumph...I would buy that in a heartbeat.
-
I think there is a Holiday Special on Blu-ray. It's just not offical. It seems to me it would just look even worst on blu-ray.
-
I kinda like the cartoon segment.
cb
-
After 30 plus years I finally sat down and watched this yesterday. It, for what it was supposed to be, is really not he on screen abortion that fan lore has made it out to be. There is a plot to the story, the singing is just what was in vogue at time. I would still watch this over an episode of He Haw any time.
If you compare it to the movie, it does not compare, but VS. Other tv from the time it is ok. I would like to see the special edition of this when it comes out. ;D
-
It's your basic comedy variety show that hasn't been seen since the Muppet Show went off the air. Bob Hope, Andy Williams and Bing Crosby use to have semi-annual shows just like it. Granted, it feels really dated but is actually quite good for the time. Personally, I would rather watch that kind of show than any Reality-tv show.
-
How many ppl have seen the special? if you dont no what it is then im sorry. another question. how many ppl have it on tape. ;)
I remember watch it with my dad in the den when it originally aired. It was the greatest thing ever! Star Wars on TV!
-
Be sure to watch Donny and Marie Osmond Star Wars bit, too. Chris Kristofferson is in it!
-
I remember that episode. It's burned into my mind.... It burns! It burns!
The best Star Wars tv appearances is on the Muppet Show. You can't beat Darth Nader and Angus McGonagle, the argyle gargoyle who gargles Gershwin.
-
A friend recently burned a copy for me and I can't agree...this is one of the worst offenses in the history of TV programming. It's screamingly hilarious bad.
Art Freakin' Carney? Jefferson Airplane/Starship/whatever?!?
Keep the cartoon and the Cantina bit with Ackmena...but the rest is pretty unwatchable, IMO. Like Geneva code violation bad.
Kinda makes me shudder at the prospect of going back and watching all those old DROIDS and EWOKS episodes...
-
That's why it's so fun to watch. Just knowing George Lucas would smash that copy with a hammer if he could.
-
Always liked the animation in the Droids cartoon.
-
I never really watched the Droids cartoon. I think it was up against the Bugs Bunny/Road Runner hour. Ewoks was alot more fun.
